Karissa Bodnar once got advice from a peer – she needed real friends, not just “deal” friends. It wasn't a dig. Entrepreneurship is lonely. And if Karissa was going to make it as a founder, she'd need friends who cared about her and not the number of zeros in her bank account. Karissa sits down with us to share how she found those kinds of friends, the time she got ghosted out of a big investment, and what she really thinks about those beauty influencer trips.  In this episode of 9 to 5ish, Karissa also shares:    Why she affectionately refers to herself a “dirt road diva”  How growing up in a small Washington town shaped her entrepreneurship How the passing of her friend, Kristy, inspired her to start Thrive Causemetics  The lesson she learned from being ghosted by a potential investor  Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Dear Cancer, I'm Beautiful, we're talking about beauty, confidence, and self-care with Karissa Bodnar, CEO and Founder of Thrive Causemetics and Bigger Than Beauty Skincare. Her mission goes way beyond makeup—Karissa has created a brand that champions clean beauty, uplifts those affected by cancer, and helps women feel like themselves again. As a breast cancer survivor, I know how powerful beauty and self-care can be during and after treatment. Karissa opens up about the deeply personal reason she started Thrive Causemetics: her friend Kristy, while undergoing cancer treatment, was advised by her oncologist to avoid wearing makeup.   That moment sparked the creation of the now-iconic Kristy Faux lashes— perfect for women who've lost their lashes and want to regain a sense of confidence and normalcy. We'll celebrate the 10-year anniversary of those lashes, talk about why clean beauty matters (especially for those of us going through treatment), how to spot harmful ingredients, and the incredible ways that Thrive Causemetics is giving back to the cancer community—including naming products after survivors. Ten years ago, Suzy traveled to Seattle to film a Today Show segment about a young make-up entrepreneur who was doing business differently. For every pair of false eyelashes she sold, she gave away a set to a chemotherapy patient who was losing her hair. At the time, Thrive Causemetics was based in Karissa Bodnar's kitchen. The company has been so successful Karissa gave away – HELLO, GAVE AWAY – $150 million dollars to cancer patients and causes. And yet, Karissa would tell you that she's failed along the way so many times she even has a playlist of “failure songs.” We share some of those tunes, plus so much more, in this interview that happened when Karissa stopped by Suzy's house to reminisce, compare notes, challenge each other, and, as usual, talk about the ageless question of how to know your values – and live by them. Also in the pod, we answer: Can your boss be your friend? And, importantly, can gray hair be cured?

What are your goals for 2024? What do you truly want to change in your life to experience the life of your effing dreams? Asking myself these very questions inspired me to go back and listen to some of our favorite stories from Food Heals. I put together a collection of incredible stories to inspire you to create the life you want and reach your goals in 2024. So, introducing the New Year Series where we are chatting about how to reach your goals with grace and ease in 2024 and beyond. My personal formula for this is Appreciate, Believe, Take Action, Receive. Appreciate: First, we have to get into the appreciation of what we do have. Appreciating the abundance around us sets the foundation for welcoming more things into our lives to appreciate. Believe: Belief is the building block of creating the life we crave. We have to believe that we can have more, that we can have what it is we desire, that we deserve what it is we desire, and we have to dissolve the blocks that hold us back from believing. Take Action: Then, we have to take action steps towards our goals. Dreams thrive on action. Taking tangible steps toward our goals is vital—it's the bridge that connects our dreams to reality. Receive: Finally, we can relax with an inner knowing that we will now receive. We can be open and willing to receive without attachment to the outcome and with the thought of, "This or something better for the highest good of all concerned." This paves the way for unexpected blessings and blocks anything that's not meant for us from coming in. Let me know if that resonates with you; I'd love to hear from you! In today's episode you'll hear from some of our favorite guests and some of their magical manifestation stories: "How to Think and Grow Rich" with James Whittaker "How to Manifest Your Dream Home" with JJ Flizanes "How to Create Your Future with Vision Boards" with Sarah Centrella "The Divine Prayer You Can Use to Call in True Love" with Josh Trent "How to Build an Abundant Business" with Lynne Taggart Thank You to Our Sponsors! Karissa Bodnar was in her early twenties and working her way up the cosmetic ladder, from a make-up artist at Sephora to Clarisonic and then to L'Oréal. But when she hit a brick wall after losing a close friend to cancer at 24, she came to the realization that she had to stop waiting around and build the beauty company of her dreams. She started her own company from her one-bedroom apartment, taking orders herself and making product formulas on her kitchen counter. That company, Thrive Causemetics, is now a multimillion-dollar business, selling “clean” cosmetics that can be worn by everyone. In this episode, Karissa shares the details of the stages of her entrepreneurial journey and how she was able to get her company from the kitchen counter to where it is today.   Karissa Bodnar is a makeup artist, beauty product designer (cosmetic chemist), formulator, and entrepreneur. “I wish there was a beauty brand I could go work for that was rooted in philanthropy.” It's the desire that led Karissa Bodnar to found Thrive Causemetics, the leading direct-to-consumer luxury beauty brand. As a child growing up on her family's farm in rural Washington, she mixed her own beauty products and would go on to travel the world working for L'Oreal's luxury division. Following a friend's death from cancer, Karissa was inspired to create a line of clean products which people with health concerns can feel safe using. Since its founding in 2015, the company has donated an astounding $135 million in funds and products to 500 giving partners in order to help deserving communities thrive. With empathetic leadership and a dedication to social action, Karissa is on a mission to change the way we think about the power and potential of beauty. Key takeaways:Ignorance is bliss when you're starting a business Don't raise money if you don't need toStart slowly - especially if you're low on capitalRely on and trust your community to guide you in making pivotal decisionsAsk for help, you can't do it aloneFind friends outside the businessQuotes:“I often say that ignorance is bliss when you're starting a business, because if I had known how hard it was, I wouldn't have done it.”(11:47 | Karissa)“I had to work on it for many, many years, much longer than your traditional product development cycle. That spirit of creating products that are truly solving problems still rings true in all of the products that we're creating. Meet Dr. Marty Goldstein, a seasoned veterinarian who's seen a dramatic shift in pet health over the last 25 years. In the past, cancer mainly struck older pets, but now even puppies aren't spared. Dr. Goldstein blames this change on generations of pets raised on lousy diets (yes, kibble, we're looking at you) and constant exposure to chemicals like flea repellents. The real kicker? Sixty percent of Dr. Goldstein's animal patients come to him with acute illnesses, often after being given up on by other vets who recommend extreme treatments or even euthanasia. But here's the good news: Dr. Goldstein's unique approach to pet health is changing the game. He can significantly improve the quality of life for 50% of cancer patients and 80% of those with degenerative diseases. How? By going beyond traditional methods and using a blend of herbs, vitamins, supplements, acupuncture, and more. His integrative approach can extend a cancer patient's life by 50% to 60% compared to standard treatments. You can see Dr. Goldstein's work in action in the documentary "The Dog Doc" and learn more in his books, "The Nature of Animal Healing" and "The Spirit of Animal Healing." He's even sharing his wisdom with the prestigious Cornell University. Forbes Magazine dubbed him the "Miracle Worker" for his game-changing contributions to veterinary medicine. He's been a guest on national TV shows like The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Martha Stewart Show, and Good Morning America. Dr. Marty Goldstein is a pioneer, showing us that sometimes the best way to care for our furry friends is by thinking outside the kibble box. Thank You to Our Sponsors! 438: Empowerment Over Fear: Taking Control of Your Health

"Fascist, out of touch, crass, privileged, dumb" – just some of the names I was called online yesterday when a very prominent newspaper posted an extremely fear-mongering article about a COVID comeback, basically insinuating we should stay inside over Labor Day weekend. As you well know, being outside is one of the best things you can do for your mental, emotional, and physical health. So, I posted that maybe, just maybe, we could take into consideration the health benefits of vitamins, vegetables, exercise, and sunshine. The comment section went berserk. My little comment set the internet ablaze. I literally wrote that comment and didn't think twice about it. I went about my day and forgot about it. So, I'm at the gym this morning, doing the leg machine, listening to a podcast, and the podcast mentioned how the news was starting to fear-monger about staying inside again. I thought, 'Oh yeah, I wonder if anyone responded to my comment.' That's when I saw it. People were going nuts, fighting each other in the comment section under my comment. Some supported what I said, while others attacked me and each other, calling names left and right. My question is, when the heck did being healthy become so polarizing, and why does it trigger so many people? When did it become normal for the news to act as a medium of fear-mongering rather than as a medium of truth and facts? Now, I choose not to live in fear. I choose to live in empowerment. I know the body is designed to heal itself when given the tools it needs to do so. Don't let your government, your politicians, or your doctors tell you otherwise. Don't buy into the fear. Don't buy into the politicization of health. Politics today just want to define us and divide us. My goal is to live a long, strong, healthy, joyful life free from chronic degenerative disease. So many people are living in fear and in the expectation that they are going to get sick, that being in a chronic disease state is inevitable or genetic. No, it's not. Nothing is inevitable. You are in control. You have the power to choose health every day. I have never had COVID. I rarely ever get sick. I've talked to some other people like me who have avoided getting sick this whole time, and I wondered if I knew what my healing protocol is. I have shared it on this show before. I know what works for me, but I was curious – what are the commonalities between me and others who have not gotten sick? So, I wanted to share those with you today. Tune in to find out my favorite healing must-haves! Thank You to Our Sponsors! CURED Nutrition You deserve to take control of your mental and physical health. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease of the large intestine, wherein the lining of the colon becomes inflamed and develops small open sores, known as ulcers. The symptoms associated with this condition can be painful and debilitating, as our guests will vividly share today. Currently, Western medicine focuses on managing symptoms through medication. However, did you know that many individuals are successfully healing themselves of this chronic condition through dietary changes? It's true. And today, I have the pleasure of introducing three guests who have achieved exactly that - they have healed themselves through the power of plants. First up, we have Vince Lia. Vince was told by two different doctors that his ulcerative colitis would never truly disappear, even with medication. To add to the confusion, they also advised him not to consume vegetables. Does that make any sense? Vince didn't think so either. You won't believe what he did next! Next, we have Nicole Davidsohn. When Nicole was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, she believed things couldn't get any worse. However, she then experienced a traumatic brain injury, leading to months of pain, medication, and fatigue. Nicole was on the brink of giving up... until she discovered a plant-based food that miraculously helped her heal both her colitis and her brain injury simultaneously! Then she even used it to heal her pup! This is one story you don't want to miss! And finally, we have Lean Green Dad, Cory Warren. Cory's wife was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis just six months before their wedding. They made the bold decision to completely change their lifestyle and adopt a plant-based diet to heal her condition, resulting in incredible outcomes for the entire family. You need to hear their inspiring story! These stories and more are featured on this episode of Food Heals. Stay tuned as we explore the profound impact of plant-based nutrition on the lives of our guests and discover the transformative power of food in healing and reversing chronic disease. In today's episode of Food Heals, you'll hear from two incredible undercover investigators from Mercy For Animals who endured witnessing animal cruelty to shed a light on animal abuse and change the laws around factory farming.  In our first clip we hear from Mercy For Animals Undercover Investigator, Cody Carlson. Cody heard about Mercy For Animals when he was a private investigator for a business intelligence firm. Moved by their work, he reached out to the founder, Milo (Nathan) Runkle. Before he knew it, Cody had quit his job, grown a goatee and become an undercover animal rights investigator. It was a wild ride. Working undercover as a farm hand is exhausting physical work and emotionally intense. He witnessed how over 4,000 cows were kept constantly pregnant, saw newborn calves torn from their mothers and left to die, or sold for slaughter. He saw how much the animals wanted to play, to be loved. His footage of workers' cruelty and the atrocities committed in the farm was broadcast by the media and resulted in legislation that changed how these animals are treated. And that was it. He was hooked. He went to law school and is now one of Mercy for Animal's attorneys. In our second clip, we hear from the Founder of Mercy For Animals, Milo Runkle. Milo grew up on a farm in a small town. At 15 years old, after witnessing the brutal murder of a piglet, he founded Mercy for Animals. He started by carrying out open rescues: going into farms' undercover and rescuing injured animals. Trawling through manure pits, witnessing first-hand the cruel conditions, and investigating the horror of slaughterhouses made him even more determined to give animals a voice and drive positive change in the world. No topic is left unturned on this episode live from Miami where Alli catches up with Ella Magers and Ashley Fillingim. Tune in to hear the crazy stories about how they all met, their retreat to Italy, what they ate at Planta, and a candid discussion about Ayahuasca vs. Antidepressants. Still suffering from the holiday blues? Is anxiety and depression holding you back from living the life of your dreams?  What if a simple age-old practice could change everything? That's right, we're talking about meditation. Specifically, The Women's Meditation Network and how Katie Krimitsos created a meditation empire that can help you heal - emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Anxiety and depression are two of the most widespread mental health issues faced by people today. They can be overwhelming and make it difficult to live a happy and fulfilling life. Fortunately, meditation is an ancient practice that can help you overcome these challenges and promote overall health and wellbeing. The history of meditation dates back thousands of years, with its roots in ancient India. Over time, it has been adopted by different cultures and religions, each adapting it in their own unique way. Today, meditation is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, and there are numerous forms of meditation available, including mindfulness meditation, loving-kindness meditation, and body scan meditation. Meditation has been scientifically proven to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. By slowing down the activity of the mind and body, meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety, while also increasing feelings of happiness and wellbeing. These positive effects can counteract the negative effects of depression and lead to improved mental health. In addition to its mental health benefits, meditation has also been shown to have positive effects on physical health. It can help reduce pain, lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and enhance sleep. By promoting physical and mental wellness, meditation can help individuals live healthier lives. Katie Krimitsos is a leading advocate for meditation and its many benefits. Through her podcasts, Katie provides women with resources and guidance to help them incorporate meditation into their daily routines. Katie encourages people to "act as if" they already have what they want to manifest in their lives, and helps them not just survive, but thrive in all areas of their lives. Thank You to Our Sponsors! What do you do when you go to your doctor for help with a chronic condition and he says microwaving your body is your own option to feel better? In my opinion you get the f**k out. That's exactly what today's guest Juli Kramer did and luckily - lived to tell about it! During her early 40s, Juli Kramer experienced severe gynecological problems with debilitating physical symptoms. Her doctor's solution was microwave treatment. Juli asked, “But aren't my symptoms telling me something?” Her doctor's reply shocked her. Juli was told her symptoms didn't matter, and that the microwave treatment would eliminate them. This made no sense to her. (This is a girl who doesn't even microwave her food, much less her body!) Juli realized that her body was desperately trying to tell her that something was seriously wrong. But, all her doctor cared about was treating the symptoms instead of getting to the root cause of the problem and resolving that. She knew there must be a better way and she set out to find it. Little did she know, the answers would be found in the ancient secrets of chinese medicine. Today, Dr. Juli Kramer is a certified qi gong, meditation, and TCM beauty secrets instructor. She holds a diploma in Chinese Medicine Nutritional Therapy and multiple certificates in Chinese medicine. Juli also has a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Counseling Psychology. Her goal is to help you feel happier, look better and live longer by sharing with you the health benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Thank You to Our Sponsors! Let's be honest - it makes sense! This time of year is full of fall celebrations, family get-togethers, gift giving, and a two month food fest - one that often ends in weight gain and feeling worse on January 1st than you did just two months ago.   The problem is that weight gained during the holiday season usually takes months to lose according to the New England Journal of Medicine. And many of us never lose the weight, packing on extra pounds that stay on and accumulate, year after year. In fact, researchers found that it took much longer to lose the weight than to gain the weight.    So I don't know about you but our goal at Food Heals over the holiday months is to have fun, and enjoy the holidays, but not become a statistic!   That's why on today's episode we'll go over four steps to completely transform your health with functional medicine, peptide therapy, daily habits, and emotional healing.   Today's show was created to inspire you that you can absolutely reach your health, wellness, and weight loss goals - now matter what time of year it is! For many of us, our hair is an integral part of our identity. Imagine a drummer who was a member of hair bands in his youth facing rapid hair loss in his early 50's. That was Solopreneur Hour Host's Michael O'Neals' story before he flew all the way to Turkey to have a hair transplant.   While pharmaceutical solutions for hair loss do exist, they can have debilitating side effects such as erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, swelling in face, arms, hands, legs, or feet, dizziness, headaches, skin rashes, hives, and even male breast cancer   Hair transplantation on the other hand uses your own hair follicles to regrow hair on your scalp in combination with techniques like PRP (platelet-rich plasma) which uses your bodys' own own healing system to repair itself.   In today's episode of Food heald we will hear the riveting story of Michael's trip to Istanbul and a natural way to regrow hair using your own hair follicles - without drugs without harsh side effects and how you can go from balding to a beautiful head of new hair too!   Dr. Emrah Cinik: EmrahCinik.com Watch the Youtube video of Michael's experience. When you first read the name, Thrive Causemetics, you know that this is a different sort of beauty company. A former makeup artist, founder and CEO Karissa Bodnar launched her company with dual purposes: to create quality, vegan, skin-loving makeup and skincare and to support organizations that help women. Both missions have equal importance—for every product sold, another is donated. The inspiration for this makeup/ movement is a poignant personal story of love, loss and resilience.#wherebrainsmeetbeauty@wherebrainsmeetbeautypodcast wherebrainsmeetbeauty.com

I'm in love with this brand and this entrepreneur's story and you're about to be too! If you're thinking of starting something to have a massive reach and impact, you're going to want to take notes because we have Karissa Bodnar, owner of Thrive Causemetics giving away all the inside scoop into how she grew her business from zero to what it is today. She seriously held nothing back and we go into everything! “I believe that when we are confident, we are unstoppable.” Karissa and Thrive Causemetics has received accolades like the “Fastest-growing vegan beauty company”, “Forbes 30 under 30 for 2019” and INC magazine's “Badass Female Founders”, but before all that Karissa grew up on a farm in Washington State. She loved creating makeup from roses from her mom's garden and crayons. Since then she has been deep into all things makeup: working as a makeup artist at Sephora during college, working at Clarisonic after college and in L'oreal's luxury division after they acquired Clarisonic. But when she hit a brick wall after losing her friend to cancer at 24, she came to the realization that she had to stop waiting and finally build the beauty company of her dreams. She was passionate about doing more than just selling beauty products but empowering women as well. And a month later she started Thrive Causemetics on her kitchen counter.  “If our product wasn't great, people would not buy it.” She funded it all herself, making product formulas on her kitchen counter and fulfilling all the orders out of her 1-bedroom apartment. As she grew, she reached out to people for help, and along the way she captured the hearts of her amazing customers and their word of mouth on social media moved the needle for her. She went from making a thousand dollars a day in sales to hundreds of thousands of dollars a day in sales, in just a few days, and kept growing from there. A part of why it's called ‘causemetics' is because she donates her profits to a lot of charities who help women re-enter the workforce, deal with abuse, recover from cancer and even more - they keep adding more and more women groups in need. You're going to learn in-depth the different stages of her journey and how she was able to get through each stage to where her company is today. Enjoy! “When you realize that the worst that can happen really isn't that bad, you're unstoppable.”  Check out the show notes Join the Zero to Influence Bootcamp waitlist Download your FREE guide: 6 Tools YouTubers Use to Get Thousands of Video Views Don't forget to join the Beauty and the Vlog Facebook group for collaborations, YouTube advice, support and more!
