MK Gilad Kariv of the Labor party says that the government has become more violent in its efforts to push through the judicial reform and that social protests were more than legitimate to stop it and its blow to Israel's democracy. Speaking to reporter Arieh O'Sullivan, Kariv said he feared that the “extreme ultra-nationalist government” will use the police to violently crack down on the demonstrations. In this episode, we focus on ‘decision theory' and discuss with Shachar its connection to Game Theory. Shachar shares the three key trade-offs relevant for taking a decision. We also discuss the ‘dictator game' and how Shachar applied a modified version of the dictator game to study preferences of decision makers in real life. Shachar Kariv is Benjamin N. Ward Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. His current research interests are focused on economic/decision theory and on social networks, social learning, personal and social preferences.

H@H: Ep 72 – On this episode of Here@Haas, Ray talks with Shachar Kariv, Tel Aviv-native and former Department Chair of Economics at UC Berkeley. We delve into Shachar's research on social preferences, including the 3 fundamental tradeoffs of decision-making and why Yale law students have such a disproportionate impact on society. Shachar then talks about how his virtual teaching experience and his expectations for the fall. Finally, we wrap with Shachar's contributions towards X-Lab, a Berkeley social science laboratory, and Capital Enterprises, his own financial services startup.Episode Quotes:I would actually argue that all decisions in life, large and small, financial or not financial, are basically governed by three trade offs: “Risk vs. return, today vs. tomorrow, self vs. others”"There is more heterogeneity in altruism within socio-demographics than across socio-demographics."“We live in a democracy but eventually a lot of the decisions are made by elite groups.”“Kale is just completely overrated. Ben Caspit talks this week with the executive director of the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism Gilad Kariv. Running on the Israeli Labor Party's list for the March 23 elections, Kariv hopes to be the first non-Orthodox rabbi in the Knesset. Kariv criticizes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for caving in to ultra-Orthodox pressure, and says he has neglected his duty to protect the Israeli center. He says that Israeli leaders must now "establish a new paradigm in state relations with the ultra-Orthodox community."

Dan Kariv is the CEO of multiple companies including Amped Ventures and Math4Sale, Inc. – a startup that is currently generating 7-figures in revenue. His life journey has been fueled by a passion to uncover and distill the spiritual truths of reality and exploring them along the journey of entrepreneurship and the pursuit of freedom so that he can better serve the world. Favorite Success Quote “True freedom is the ability to choose how you spend each day.” Key Points 1. Are You Being the Best Version of Yourself? Every second of your life, you have a choice. You can either choose to show up as the best, most powerful, most grounded version of yourself, or you can choose to allow fear and external pressures suppress your strength and live a life below your potential. In every challenging situation, whether it is a meeting at work, an argument with your wife, or some other battle that you face, ask yourself “Am I being the best version of myself right now?” Are you showing up and leaving everything on the table, are you attacking life with a vigor and energy that makes others stand in awe, or are you playing it safe? Keep this question in the forefront of your mind each day and you will be amazed at the paradigm shifts you will experience. 2. Freedom Comes with a Price Freedom of any kind, whether it is freedom of location, financial freedom, physical freedom, or social freedom (e.g. freedom from approach anxiety), comes with with a price tag. Freedom is not free. It is earned. It is taken. It is wrestled from the jaws of fear and uncertainty and doubt. If you want a life of your own design, a life of true power where you can be who you want and live life on your terms, then you are going to have to pay for it. Achieving freedom requires discipline and sacrifice. It requires years, sometimes decades of giving up what you want now for a future of unlimited potential. As the old saying goes, “Live like no one else will today so that you can live like no one else can tomorrow.” 3. Fear is the Pathway to Power One of the quickest ways to achieve success is to see your fears as the pathway to power. See fear as the guiding force in your life that tells you where you should be going and what you should be doing. The more fear you feel, the more you will know you are on the right track. Do not let fear paralyze you. Realize that on the other side of every fear is a stronger, more powerful, and more grounded man. Overcoming your fear to start your business or talk to that girl or get off the couch and go to the gym will lead to personal growth and success that you could never have imagined. Embrace the fear and achieve your dream life. 4. What Do You Want to be Remembered For? It is easy to live our lives without ever truly considering our legacies. But the simple fact is, all of us are going to die. We are all headed towards the same fate. And 100 years from now, the only thing that will differentiate your life from everyone else’s is the impact that you had and the difference that you made. Devote time each day to thinking about the person that you want to become. Think about how you want to be remembered. Do you want to be remembered as the grinder? The philanthropist? The family man? No matter what you want your legacy to be, make the definite decision to take the necessary actions to leave behind a life that will be remembered how you want to be remembered. 5. Success Requires You to Hone Your Capacity If you want to succeed at any endeavor in life, you must first hone your capacity. You must become a student to your craft and be willing to put your nose to the grindstone, working and learning, all the while approaching your craft with a deep humility. The more and more capable you become at any skill, the more you will find your ego and insecurities melting away. You will no longer feel the need to prove yourself to the world because you already have a deep inner confidence in yourself and your capacity for success.
With June comes Pride and 2020 is certainly a Pride year for the record books. We’re still living under a global pandemic with all in-person celebrations cancelled. But thankfully, America is finally demanding change against systematic racism through the #BlackLivesMatter movement in a way that we haven’t seen since the 1960s. It’s a powerful moment in history and it leaves me feeling motivated and inspired. Pride is not cancelled, just because large gatherings can’t happen. In fact, I’d say that the spirit of Pride this year is stronger than ever.My latest podcast is a mix of joyous hands-in-the-air celebration dance tracks and gay classics, with a healthy sprinkling of Lady Gaga (whose latest album, “Chromatica,” is taking the summer by storm!) A ThinkAdvisor interview with Professor Shachar Kariv brings some much needed clarity to determining client desires regarding risk vs. return, today vs. tomorrow and legacy matters. This podcast (5:25) shares (and concurs with) Kariv’s view that negotiating trade-offs is key to client self-knowledge and the advisor’s knowledge of the client. I also offer my view of the most difficult of these trade-offs.

Gilad Kariv gives a sermon @ Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco, 02-16-2018
Rabbi Kariv provides a candid look into the social, political and religious life of Reform Judaism in Israel. Rabbi Gilad Kariv is a Reform leader and attorney in Israel, serving as the Executive Director of the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism (IMRPJ). Rabbi Kariv was born and educated in Tel-Aviv. His involvement with the Reform Movement began in High School, when he joined Congregation Beit Daniel, the Center of Progressive movement in Tel-Aviv. Once completing his secondary education at the "Lady Davis" High-School, Gilad volunteered for a year of service (Shnat Shirut) in the Israeli Scouts, and worked on establishing educational "Nahal" groups. Kariv served in the Israel Defense Forces Intelligence Corps under the "Haman Talpiot" program. Following five years of service, during which he completed with honors the officers' program, Kariv went to study at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 2001 he earned his bachelor's degree in Law and Jewish Studies. Between 2001-2002 he interned in Supreme Court of the State Attorney Office. In 2003 he received his master's degree in Jewish studies at the Hebrew Union College (HUC) in Jerusalem. In 2004, he was certified as a lawyer by the Israel Bar Association. In 2008, Kariv received a second Master's in Constitutional Law from Northwestern University in Chicago, through a combined program with Tel-Aviv University. During his academic studies, Kariv established the Progressive Movement's student network on campuses around the country. Following the economic sanctions of 2002, Kariv was one of the founding members of the Social Organizations Forum, and was active in several social initiatives, such as the single mothers protest. In 2003, Kariv was ordained as a Reform rabbi at HUC-JIR. Among his posts, Kariv served as a leader at Congregation Beit Daniel in Tel Aviv until 2008. Between 2003-2009, Kariv served as the director of the Israel Religious Action Center and headed the Reform Movement's public and legal initiatives in Israel on issues of freedom of religion, the relation between religion and state, conversion, and many other social causes. Kariv initiated the establishment of Keren Be'chavod ("Be'chavod Fund) – the Reform Movement's humanitarian aid foundation and "Kehilat Tzedek" – the training and guidance center for people of all Jewish sects in the field of social action. In 2009, Kariv was appointed to be the executive director of the IMRPJ. Since then, he has worked to expand the work of the Movement, advance its stance among the Israeli public, establish new Reform congregations around the country, and obtain government recognition of the Movement's activities.

I'm so excited for today's startup guest. He's a fellow Penn State alum and co-founder of The Coding Space. Eli graduated from the Smeal College of Business last year and now runs the after school program The Coding Space where he helps students learn to code. The company launched in July 2015 with just 6 students in September to over 125 students by the winter semester. Eli says the company is 100% bootstrapped. Prior to working here and while still in college, Eli started his own web development company, CrossedClouds. He was also part of the user acquisition team at Mozilla Firefox in San Francisco and worked at Remind.com For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

In combining theory and experiments, we should have two objectives in mind. The first objective is to confront the theory with some data to see whether the theory is at all consistent with the behavior exhibited in the laboratory. Clearly, there is much that can be learned about the theory from the data, quite apart from any notion of "testing" the theory. We hope to learn whether the theory is useful in interpreting the data, of course, but we also expect to find out what extensions of the theory are required to make it compatible with the data. The second objective is to confront the data with the theory. A theoretical framework is needed for two reasons. First, the data set generated by experiments can be extremely rich and the behavior predicted by the theory is sometimes complex and subtle. Any attempt to explain rich datasets in purely "behavioral" terms would require a large number ad hoc assumptions, which would render the "explanation" rather uninformative. The second reason is that, without a theoretical framework, it is quite impossible to draw general conclusions that go beyond the particular setting of the experiment.
