Welcome to another Q&A show - this week we cover tax free cash from DB pensions, annuities vs drawdown and whether you should pay down a buy to let mortgage or invest. Plus quite a bit more! Shownotes: https://meaningfulmoney.tv/QA9 Questions 00:41 Question 1 Hi Pete and Roger. Thanks for your wisdom over the years. My question came about from an answer you gave on a previous Q&A about AVCs and tax free cash. You mentioned it was possible (sometimes) to use AVCs as tax free cash to preserve the maximum DB benefit. I have some follow up questions that relate to - A small DB pension that doesn't appear to offer tax free cash. - A small DB pension that does offer tax free cash, but I have left that job so can no longer contribute to that pension (AVCs or otherwise) I don't have AVCs in these pensions, but I do have a DC pot separately. Would I be able to use take tax free money from my DC pension if I took it at the same time I took the DB pension sort of in lieu of the tax free component of my overall pension? I suspect this is clutching at straws, but thought it worth checking. Many thanks. Loyal listener, Mark 03:11 Question 2 Hi Pete & Roger! I hail from Northern Ireland and enjoy your Podcast to keep my mind active and up to date in all things financial - Top job. I have been looking at having a go at Voyant after various spreadsheets of my own as a way to play with the numbers so was considering a meaningful academy course - question is which course is right for me? I am in mid 40's and financially secure so in theory wealth all ready built? Mortgage paid, multiple residential and commercial properties owned debt free and an sizeable equity portfolio and so should I be looking at the retirement or wealth course? John 05:30 Question 3 Great podcast and been an avid listener for the last year. I have a question which, I think I know the answer but I'd be curious on your perspective. Background: - I divorced in 2021 and as part of that agreed to transfer the house over to my ex-wife and a charge put on the deeds so that when it's sold I'm owed a percentage of the sale. - The house going on the market will be (or should be) triggered when my youngest son reaches 18 or leaves full-time education. This will be either 2028 or 2031. - Since the divorce I've been able to purchase another house and this is my permanent residence. I'm a higher rate tax payer, and when that ex-marital home is sold I'd expect to get somewhere around £200k. However I won't actually need that to hit my retirement goals and would prefer to pass that onto my 3 kids. Could you please discuss options on how I might do that in the most tax efficient way. Best Regards, Dave 10:38 Question 4 Hello Pete & Rog, I stumbled across the show a month ago and have been "binge listening" since then, its amazing, where have you been all my life, keep it up guys. I am actively preaching the Gospel according to Pete to all and sundry. I am a 61 years old Veteran in receipt of a Military (DB) pension to the amount of £18k per annum, which is index linked to CPI. Additional to this, I have a moderate private pension to the amount of £150k which I contribute £500 per month, it has an approx growth of circa 15% I also have a small Stocks and Shares ISA, valued at £15k which I contribute a minimum of £250 per month, this is also growing at approx 14% pa. I am currently working and contributing the minimum amount into a work placed pension with NEST. I am planning to look at retirement at either my next birthday in October 25 (62yrs old) or continue until 65 as I am enjoying work. I have deliberately avoiding factoring in my wife as she is a senior manager within the public sector and has a good DB scheme Final/Average earnings Pension. My question is pension related and I have a dilemma as to decide between either an Annuity to boost my Mil Pension or veer towards a form of drawdown option at a higher rate until SPA and then look to reduce down withdrawals in order to be tax efficient and make it last longer? I am debt free with mortgage paid off and only real major expense is a holiday account which we both contribute to as we like luxury holidays, I hear Rog saying "spend it now". No plans to put anything towards estate planning as both sons are very successful and they will probably inherit our home in time. Just looking for some guidance on what feels may be the right decision under the circumstances, keep up the great work guys, love the show. Michael 16:34 Question 5 Dear Pete & Rog, I have a pensions Annual Allowance query, the answer to which might be of interest to the MeMo community. A relative uses salary sacrifice for her occupational DC pension scheme, and the employer contributes £40k, annually, into her plan. Normally, she doesn't make any personal contributions into any pension schemes, but after receiving a windfall, she is minded to do so via a newly opened SIPP — she has rejected the option of increasing her salary sacrifice amount, and wishes to contribute part of her windfall separately from her occupational DC scheme. Her (post-sacrifice) relevant UK earnings are £35k, so she is planning to contribute £20k gross into the SIPP (£16k net); in order to consume the full Annual Allowance limit of £60k [£40k (employer) + £20k (personal)]. The SIPP provider has advised her that she can actually contribute the whole £35k (gross) by using ‘carry forward'; as she hasn't made any personal contributions in previous years [she's only ever used salary sacrifice]. Is the SIPP provider correct? Kind Regards, James 18:15 Question 6 Husband and I are in our late 50's. We have a £30k interest only mortgage on our home, with £350k of interest only mortgages on 3 buy to let's. Husband has £350k in personal pension and I have a civil service pension (I have taken my final salary element of civil service pension). My B2L' s give £2300 income per month against associated costs of £1100 per month. My question is around reducing our borrowing versus investing in stocks and shares ISA. I have been comfortable in having my buy to let's on interest only mortgages but I am now questioning my approach. We are intending holding at least 2 of the 3 properties throughout our retirement. I am thinking of using the next 5 years to position ourselves for our retirement. I could start to invest £500 into a stocks and shares ISA or I could pay down the mortgages. I am torn between approaches and would value your input on this. I have only just discovered your podcast and it is now a weekly listen for me. I hope I have explained this fully and look forward to hearing your views. Helen.

Other than a great discussion on the new Bambu Labs A1, here are this episodes questions: Based on a previous question you guys helped with, company I am consulting with purchased a Bambu X1 Carbon. We are successfully producing salable nylon/carbon fiber parts for ultra light canoes. Very happy with our purchase. So - next question. Thinking of second printer. What are the gains you would get in the $1500 to $2500 range. Is it speed, robustness or reliability? The X1 checked all the boxes with good build, easy to learn slicer and reliable prints so far. Just trying to understand why we would make the next jump up, and if it is really necessary. Thanks for all the info - it has been invaluable so far! Gary Ratajczak Hi guys, Hope you are all well. My question would be: do you guys have any tips for printing larger prints for a bed slinger dimensions 220x220x250? I have an Anycubic Kobra 2. I intend to print helmets which are generally a lot larger than my print bed dimensions. And What are your thoughts on SLA printing? Thank you all for this great podcast! Kind Regards, Carson, Southampton, UK (place where Titanic set sail if it helps haha) Hello all! Since you all have one of those fancy new Enders, is that the X-Motor on the back of the gantry? I keep wondering in all the reviews I see. Any thoughts on why they moved it to the back? What's the belt path look like? Thanks Guy(s)! ha ha! Love the podcast! JohnDStrand

It now an occasional segment when stellar beverages are discovered. 00:03:04 Professor Sebastian Longsword and Charles Firth [Interview by Professor Sebastian Longsword from The MBA School Of MBA Credentials] Hello. My name is Professor Sebastian Longsword from The MBA School Of MBA Credentials and I'd like to thank The Adelaide Show for making its studio available so that three grown humans can have a mature discussion about some prickly topics, as a model for the rest of society. By addressing each other with respect, I am certain we will finish debating as warm acquaintences, friends, or even lovers. But first, I have a formal introduction to read. Initially, I was going to ask Associate Professor Chat GPT to do this, but then decided to ask my assistant, Ms Paige Turner, instead, because I find nothing is quite as confident and reassuring as her hand. Let us begin. In 2021, I debuted my Adelaide Fringe MBA with a show called, A Lunchtime MBA, in which I promised attendees could come for lunch and leave with an MBA in 60 minutes. Fast forward to 2023, and the blurb for Wankernomics, Solutionising The Corporate World by Charles Firth (from The Chaser) and James Schloeffel (frome The Shovel) describes itself as, and I quote, a 60-minute MBA. Is this plagiarism, is this the inevitability of great ideas floating to the top and conjealing on the surface of life, or does it signal something else? I have summoned my Fringe colleagues to get to the bottom of it. Here are the link to the two 2023 Adelaide Fringe shows in contention: 100% MBA Success: Whisky And Trivia With Professor Longsword Wankernomics: Solutionising The Corporate World My approach to this "difficult" conversation will be following some guidelines from the NSW Education Department. Their three points are: Have the conversation sooner rather than later (which I why we're about to get stuck right in) Allow time and space (which is why I've made sure we are each in a different state of Australia) Reflect (which is why I have a mirror in front of me) Are you ready, Charles? Charles, if I may circle back to 2021, what puzzles me the most about your decision to mimic my previous work, is that I distinctly remember cradling you in my bosom and laying a hand on your shoulder as I slipped you a shiny, fully-sized, MBA Business Degree. Is it this small act of tenderness that's played in role in crafting these hijinks with James? As an aside, plagiarism detector dot net says 57% of your blurb is original and 43% has been plagiarised. What might surprise you is the sources it used for this report. The first was a site called estellar.com.au, the second was Bing, and the third was the New International Version of the Bible. Apparently, you got penalised for using the word, James. Did he steal his name from the Bible? So, if you are claiming that this show, Wankernomics, is your own work, please show us your workings. How did it come about? The ABC reported today that interest rates are expected to keep rising in 2023, not only making Reserve Bank Governor, Philip Lowe, the pinup boy in this month's Viagra Superstars Magazine, but it also means he would be the one with the hands pulling the leavers of Wankernomics in Australia. Are we right to admire Mr Lowe, or should we fear this currency cavalier? I asked my MBA students to share their favourite terms, the ones that make their bosses smile and admire their white collar status. I think it's wonderful to know you've got a saying you can use to get you out of trouble, a bit like a shibboleth (which is another term from the bible, James): Low hanging fruit. What are your thoughts about that? It's a no-brainer. Ducks in a row. In my research for my original Fringe show, 100% MBA Success - Whisky And Trivia With Professor Longsword, I uncovered a term that I had thought was pleasant but sweet but is actually considered passive aggressive. It's the term, Kind Regards. Apparently, Regards means I despise you but I'll grit my teeth and smile at you condescendingly, whereas Kind Regards means, gloves off, you little twerp, I truly despise you and am dreaming of ways to bring you harm. You'll be pleased to know I have done semantic research and come up with a replacement, it is Gentle Love And Kisses. Who would you love to receive a letter or email from, that's been signed off with Gentle Love And Kisses? And wouldn't that make workplaces warmer places to be? If I may, I would love to test you with a question I'll be putting to my audiences, just to see if you really are MBA quality. It's to do with coinhabiting office environments with other humans. Some of them speak loudly, all the time, robbing others of concentration. It's my contention that we can find punishments for these people while still keeping HR happy by staying within the guidelines of the 1949 Geneva Convention. So, Charles and James, imagine the most annoying people you know, standing close by and carrying on with a loud conversation about football, the opera, or their child's report card. Which of the following punishments is NOT permitted by the Geneva Convention A: Shoot them with a small calibre pistol, loaded with rubber bullets, and then lock them in the stationery cupboard until 5pmB: Convene a court and try them for crimes against humanity, provided you select a fellow employee or manager to represent themC: Lock them in boardroom for 2 minutes with Kyle Sandilands Of course the answer is C because the Geneva Convention strictly prohibits torture. Did you know two of our universities in SA are in merger talks - the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia. And given how sharp you two seem to be, if we were to consider merger talks between my school and yours, what are your mandatory, non-neogiable requirements that you believe every business school needs? Our mandatory items are twofold. A school hot tub for faculty meetings. And a school sommelier. Have you any final thoughts or insights to share to encourage people to see your show, Wankernomics? 00:28:11 Musical Pilgrimage In the musical pilgrimage, we have Triangle by Monsoon June. W/C 18th April 2022 I wrote to my MP this week, the third instalment of our ongoing conversation about that man and his conduct. You know the one, the Leader of the Party. To: MCCARTNEY, Jason Re: Boris Johnson Hi Jason, I write in reference to my earlier emails and your subsequent replies. You closed you last communication with the following statement; "As I have said before if anyone is found guilty of breaking the law they must face the full consequences of their actions. That is why we must now wait for the police investigation to conclude.” Whilst I appreciate the investigation is a long way from its conclusion, and we haven't as yet heard in full the findings of the Sue Gray report, I am struggling to see how the situation will improve. If the speculation in the media is to be believed the Prime Minister may well be facing further penalty notices for breaches of the COVID regulations. You have previously stated that you will continue to hold the Prime Minister to account and I would ask you to elaborate on this point. I am sure I am not the only one of your constituents that will be asking you to vote in favour of the motion to refer him to the Privileges Committee. I would also like to understand at what point you would feel it appropriate to put into a letter to the Chairman of the 1922 Committee stating you have no confidence in the Prime Minister. Trust in politicians is being eroded at an alarming rate, and if those elected to high office refuse to respect the standards to which they should be held accountable then I fear for our democracy in the longer term. I have just been co-opted as a Governor to xxxxxx High School, and as student of History myself one of the things I am passionate about is encouraging young people to look at all sides of an issues, and discuss and debate in a positive and constructive manner. Young people should have trust in the democratic structures that are there to safeguard their futures, and want to engage with them as a way to improve the outcomes for the wider community. Unfortunately I would find it difficult to defend those structures at the present time, or explain to any student why they should put their faith in them. I feel this is very significant moment, and I think history will cast judgement on those who look the other way or excuse this as a partisan issue. I look forward to your response. Kind Regards, Anthony Short As yet I haven't had a reply. W/C 10th January 2022 From: Anthony Short Subject: Boris Johnson Date: 12 January 2022 at 12:43:51 GMT To: xxxxx.xxxxxxxxxmp@parliament.uk Hi xxxxx, I have been considering writing to you over the last few days, but wanted to wait until I had heard from the current Prime Minister at questions this lunchtime. Now he has confirmed what I think we all knew that he did attend the much discussed party in Downing Street on the 20th May I wanted to register my utter disgust at his behaviour, his empty apology and the damage his behaviour has done in undermining the trust between constituent and government. I am not quite sure how he thinks he can continue in office, or lead with any moral authority and I worry that should we need to implement any further measures to protect public health this will prove simply impossible. I am fortunate that we have suffered no personal loss due to the pandemic, and I can only begin to imagine how those who lost loved ones in the most difficult of circumstances must feel after hearing the Prime Minsters admission of guilt at the despatch box. Whilst I didn't vote for you I have always been struck by your commitment to our constituency and your personal integrity. I am aware that you followed the Covid guidelines with the same vigour (and in the same spirit) as the rest of your constituents and as such I would like to ask what your position is with regard to the current situation, and what you will be doing to reflect the feelings of people like myself. What a busy day! I woke up at 6am, which never happens, even though I go to bed at 10pm. I figured I'd better get up though since the monthly AdvoCat had to be sent out today at 10am and I had not written a single word of it yet. Got it done and launched, then Judy Mills and Debbie Banks of EIA, met w/ Howie and I over Skype for an hour and a half, to discuss doing a side event at the CITES CoP17 in Johannesburg, SA, to raise awareness about tigers. Ran from that straight to a closing on the sale of 310 Thomasdale Av in Haines City. Jamie called me from there, in a hurry for me to return to the sanctuary because Gale has already left for the Taking Action for Animals Conference in D.C. and Jamie wanted to take some of the interns bobcat tracking where Thor was released last month. She will switch out the cards in the camera traps while there. I have a week and a half of contacts left, so I had to call my eye doctor and order more. I'd much rather do it myself at Contacts.com but he needs the money, so I order through him. He can't take credit cards, so that means mailing a check. All a huge hassle, but I figure he doesn't have that many more good years left to work. Judy has been saying she can't go to CITES because she's a consultant who doesn't get paid when she doesn't work and she'd be gone 2 weeks. No one could train Jamie better to take over all this tiger protection in the wild stuff, so I offered to do her job for her (reporting for MacArthur Foundation on Climate Change) and let her keep the money. We were discussing what sort of giveaways or enticements to get people to come to the tiger event, which would include a 10 minute tiger movie and a 10 minute tiger talk. I suggested we white label 100 bottles of wine with NOT Tiger Bone Wine and an educational piece about how farming tigers is driving the extinction of tigers. We offer them to the first 100 people who come to and stay through the entire event. Then contacted the hotel to see if they can provide wine. Yesterday I wore myself out, dragging Nest cameras and an extension cord all over the place to see if I can pick up a good enough signal to broadcast for Nest. It would be a great way to reach a new audience. I have a lot more dragging around to do today, but it's 90 degrees and I'm not sure how much more I can stand. Then I got this nice note: Hi Carole and Jamie, I hope all is well. Just wanted to let you know we have submitted everything to Animal Planet today and are just waiting for feedback from their internal development team. Once they have looked over it, it will be passed on to the commissioner. This can take a few weeks (given the number of pitches they receive) but we have a good relationship with them so I am hopeful that we can chase this soon if we don't hear anything in the next few weeks. I will keep you posted, the team have done all we can here so we have everything crossed. Feel free to get in touch at any time but I will update you soon. Have a great day! London Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. Dear Docs Till Death-heads, We are writing to let you know how excited we were to discover that Geoff selected Jem Cohen's 1999 experimental film about Fugazi, INSTRUMENT, as our documentary for this week. All of us here at DTD are very familiar with Fugazi's many wonderful records and with arty Fwench New Wave cinema, so we believe that we are the perfect podcast to discuss Cohen's movie. And if we had to identify one weakness, it would probably be that we, as a podcast, care too much about punk and hardcore, and that we sometimes go TOO FAR to do a good job. In any event, we would love to speak more with you about this wonderful opportunity that we just completed. In the meantime, please listen to this very professional episode and subscribe for instant access to future episodes. Additionally, if you can find a "like" button, please smash it like the state! My guest today is Shopé Delano, VP of Marketing at Charlie Oscar, a new-era group of digital consumer brands, and Founder of her own upcoming workwear brand Kind Regards . Shopé's internet life began back in 2010, with a fashion blog and youtube channel that saw her work freelance with the likes of Nike, Puma and ASOS. After a successful stint in academia, she entered the world of startups and venture capital, working with the likes of Depop, Forward Partners and now Charlie Oscar. I originally came into contact with Shopé after her viral open letter to working women - I read it and just had to message her about just how nail-on-head it was - so we got talking about the topics in my book, and her work. This question was sent by Jan, and she writes: Dear Vidas, Thank you for asking how my practice is going today. Today I am struggling with hymns. I am not very competent with the pedals. I practice separately...pedals, RH, RH and pedals, LH, LH and pedals, RH and LH, RH LH and pedals. I also write in the pedaling and fingering. It seems to take me ages to learn a hymn; especially as playing a hymn on the piano is very easy. Perhaps I need to do more slow practice and perhaps I need to do more separate practice rather than playing the hymn together over and over again. On a more positive note...I have been playing in church for a year now and my playing has definitely improved. I am very pleased. It has been worth all the hard work. Thank you for your help over the last year. Kind Regards, Jan
Q&A - Managing Guilt From: Mike Piercey at Cornerstone Constructions Expert: Matt Jones from Cube Consulting Firstly, thanks to Mike who just emailed us the amazing review below. Hi Matt, I found your podcast via your episode on The Tradies Business Show, and have since listened to every one of your episodes. There isn't enough peer recognition in our industry, so I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how bloody good your product is. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and network with all of us. Kind Regards, Mike Piercey Cornerstone Landscapes I replied to his email thanking him and asking if there was anything that he might need any help with currently to which he replied, I guess the thing I struggle most with is finding a reasonable work/life balance. I love working on the business and I love spending time with my family but I usually feel guilty when I'm doing one and not the other. Kind Regards,Mike PierceyDirectorCornerstone Landscapes This is a problem that I feel we all suffer with from time to time.I experienced it myself first hand last year, when I went skiing with a couple of mates. The whole time I felt guilty because I was away from my business.I remember while I was away thinking, 'why do I feel like this? Surely I can justify a weekend away'. As a result of that experience, I put together the Learn'n'ski program that's happening next month in Wanaka, New Zealand. It was my way of making a great experience tax deductible for my friends and clients. Check out more about Learn'n'ski 2016 here. Excuse the shameless plug ;-) Anyway, the reality is, we all battle with guilt from time to time, so to help us find out why and what we can do about it, I invited Matt from Cube Consulting back on the show to help us get to the bottom of it.You might remember Matt from episodes TSS017, TSS018, TSS019 & TSS020. He is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to mindset and strategy and his podcasts were some of our most downloaded. Go back and check them out. A big thanks to Mike for the question and to Matt for sharing his expertise with us once again. If you have any questions/queries, or needs, email them in to enquiries@thesiteshed.com and you may well get your own podcast out of it ;-) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
