As a clinical herbalist, I have found that autonomic dysfunction, as often stemming from the vagal nerve, is associated with so many persistent symptom pictures. The vagal nerve has been getting more attention in recent years, but what exactly is it, why is it getting dysregulated, and what do we mean by dysregulation anyway? In today's episode I give the the A&P, share connections I have discovered in practice, and my favorite ways of resetting and reregulating the nervous system. If you would like to recommend a podcast topic, email me at laureltreewellness@gmail.com or call and leave a message at 802-234-1177.If you would like to learn more about working with me one-on-one, or to sign up for my monthly newsletter, visit www.laureltreewellness@gmail.comThank you for listening!

Risk Factors for Suicide: What therapists should know when treating teens and adults Curt and Katie chat about suicide risk factors.  Suicide rates have been increasing across the nation and there is an increasing need for the mental health workforce to be prepared to assess and intervene with clients of all ages. We take an in-depth look at the risk and protective factors associated with suicidal ideology and behaviors in both teens and adults. We also lay the beginning foundations of a suicide model to help clinicians better understand and intervene with clients exhibiting suicidal thoughts. This is a continuing education podcourse. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we explore what makes someone more likely to attempt suicide We've talked frequently about suicide, but thought it would be important, especially during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, to go more deeply into the risk factors that make someone more likely to attempt and complete suicide.   What are the highest risk factors for suicide? “Anxiety Sensitivity… the fear of the feelings of being anxious… is even more so correlated with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts than depression is.” – Curt Widhalm, LMFT Defining acute, active suicidality (versus passive or chronic suicidality or non-suicidal self-Injury) Going beyond the list of risk factors to how big of a risk each factor is for attempting or completing suicide Exploring how impactful a previous attempt is on whether someone is likely to attempt of complete suicide The importance of getting a complete history of suicidality and suicide attempts at intake The impact of family members who have attempted or died by suicide Alcohol and other substance use and abuse as an additive risk factor Cooccurring mental disorders (eating disorders, psychosis and serious mental illness, depression, anxiety and anxiety sensitivity, personality disorders) Child abuse history, especially folks with a history of sexual abuse history Life transitions, especially unplanned and sudden life transitions Owning a firearm makes you 50 times more likely to die by suicide Racial differences in who is more likely to attempt or complete suicide Living at a high elevation What are additional risk factors for suicide specific to teens? Early onset of mental illness Environmental factors Exposure to other suicides (social media, contagion) Not being able to identify other options Seeking control over their lives and lacking impulse control leading to suicide attempts The importance of communication and the potential for a lack of communication Bullying and lack of social support, without a way to escape due to social media and cell phones What are protective factors when assessing for suicidality? “Just because protective factors are present doesn't mean that they balance out risk factors [for suicide].”– Curt Widhalm, LMFT Reasons for living, responsibility to others Spirituality or attending a place of worship that teaches against suicide Where you live based on cultural or societal factors Having a children or child-rearing responsibilities, intact marriage Strong social support, employment Relationship with a therapist   Suicide Model: Integrated Motivational Volitional Model by O'Connor and Kirtley   Reviewing the model shown in the graphic in the show notes at mtsgpodcast.com Our Generous Sponsor for this episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide: Thrizer Thrizer is a new modern billing platform for therapists that was built on the belief that therapy should be accessible AND clinicians should earn what they are worth. Their platform automatically gets clients reimbursed by their insurance after every session. Just by billing your clients through Thrizer, you can potentially save them hundreds every month, with no extra work on your end. Every time you bill a client through Thrizer, an insurance claim is automatically generated and sent directly to the client's insurance. From there, Thrizer provides concierge support to ensure clients get their reimbursement quickly, directly into their bank account. By eliminating reimbursement by check, confusion around benefits, and obscurity with reimbursement status, they allow your clients to focus on what actually matters rather than worrying about their money. It is very quick to get set up and it works great in completement with EHR systems. Their team is super helpful and responsive, and the founder is actually a long-time therapy client who grew frustrated with his reimbursement times The best part is you don't need to give up your rate. They charge a standard 3% payment processing fee! Thrizer lets you become more accessible while remaining in complete control of your practice. A better experience for your clients during therapy means higher retention. Money won't be the reason they quit on therapy. Sign up using bit.ly/moderntherapists if you want to test Thrizer completely risk free! Sign up for Thrizer with code 'moderntherapists' for 1 month of no credit card fees or payment processing fees! That's right - you will get one month of no payment processing fees, meaning you earn 100% of your cash rate during that time. You can add your festive decorations to our interactive map by visiting wenatcheeworld.com/holidaylights   -   Now our feature story… Local Dr. Mabel Bodell has launched a Spanish language YouTube channel as part of a COVID-19 information campaign.   Her first YouTube video explains  how a vaccine works by boosting the body's immune system to combat a virus. To end the video she reminds her audience that vaccines work.   Bodell plans on releasing videos to her channel weekly. Alongside her, Miranda Nayak, a sophomore at Wenatchee High School and member of the school's film club, has been editing videos for her channel.   Bodell is a nephrologist as well as a member of the Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion council at Confluence Health. Before that, she was an assistant professor at John Hopkins University and a member of the Hopkins Organization for Latino Awareness.   Her COVID-19 educational campaign consists of short, Spanish language videos, and she has collaborated with several community organizations to produce informational videos like how to put on a mask and how to properly wash your hands.   After noticing that many of the patients infected with COVID-19 were Latino, she implores the community to take action to help stop this pandemic.   So the focus of her campaign has been to share crucial COVID-19 information in a way that is still accessible to the Latino community.   And recently, that focus has shifted toward vaccines.   Bodell volunteered in the local Pfizer and BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine trial that began in August. After receiving her first shot, she posted a quick video on Facebook explaining how clinical trials work.   Although it was an exciting opportunity for her as a doctor, she said her involvement as a Latina was equally important. She wanted to prove that a future COVID-19 vaccine would be safe. And she urged members of the Latino community to apply for the trial in August. Minorities are always underrepresented in medical trials in the United States, according to Bodell. This occurs, in part, because some minority communities simply mistrust the medical system. So she's working hard to help restore confidence.   -   Happy Holidays Wenatchee Valley! The season of giving is upon us once again and the Wenatchee World would like you to enter to win one of our weekly holiday gift packages in our Holiday Season Giveaway. It's an adventure about fitting in and finding one's self. She plans to write two more novels, turning her series into a trilogy.   Sandgren, who lives in Portland, grew up in Wenatchee. Her writing was influenced by teachers in the Wenatchee School District, such as her first grade teacher Nancy George, who introduced her to Rudyard Kipling.    George has since retired but her teachings have continued to inspire Sandgren.   The Wenatchee World caught up with Sandgren to chat about her new novel, what it took to make and share what readers can expect to see. We encourage you to visit wenatcheeworld.com and check out the full interview! -   Finally, some local history, Wenatchee Valley History is brought to you by NABUR [this is pronounced just like neighbor] – your trusted neighborhood community. How To Stay Innovative In A COVID-19 World

The COVID-19 pandemic may have upended nearly everything about how we live and work, but it hasn't stopped innovation.  While many people and businesses are struggling to stay afloat and work through their day-to-day issues, Lisa Bodell, founder and CEO of FutureThink, says there's never been a better time to be innovative. She views COVID-19 as the great reset that has paved the way for innovative changes. Innovation is more important now than ever, but it requires a new approach in our new world.  COVID-19 can act as a catalyst for innovation and allow us to turn changes we were forced into by a global pandemic into productive and long-term changes in our organizations. Here are three ways to stay innovative in the age of COVID-19.  Question Assumptions How we innovate is based on our assumptions. The key to strong innovation and being open to new ideas is to question the assumptions we've always had or that are part of society. For years, we've assumed certain things that are now being challenged. Many companies assumed they couldn't have their employees work from home. But when they were forced to let go of those assumptions, they realized remote work can be effective for their teams. Questioning that assumption has allowed companies to create innovative remote work practices.  As you set out to innovate, question the assumptions you hold personally or within your organization. Ask yourself why you think a certain way and why things matter. Innovation comes when people are willing to find creative solutions and re-create norms.  Simplify When processes are inefficient or redundant, people can feel burnt out or too busy to innovate. The goal of simplicity isn't to get more work done, it's to do the work that matters. Bodell says anything can be simplified, but especially our processes, mindsets and schedules. Start by stripping things away to the essentials and only adding back in the things that matter most. Evaluate every aspect of your schedule or process to ensure it is valuable and not just busy work. Pharmaceutical company Novartis simplified its processes to drive collaboration and innovation. Video is now mandatory for all meetings, and any meeting longer than 30 minutes requires permission. Other companies are only allowing meetings to be scheduled on certain days of the week so that employees can focus on their own work the rest of the week.  When your mind and schedule is free of pointless or busy tasks, you have more energy to dedicate to innovation and can clear the space for better ways of doing things.  Know Your Skillset And Pivot Innovation requires individuals and companies to pivot to something new. Successful innovation is often based on your skills and abilities. Instead of trying something completely new, you can pivot to an area where you know you will be strong.  Bodell recommends knowing your skillset and pivoting within those boundaries. Start by examining your skills and abilities. Where are areas you excel or that you know you can thrive? Use those skills as a jumping off point for innovation. Bodell shares the example of Dyson, a company that has a well-established production process. When COVID-19 first hit, the company was able to easily pivot from manufacturing vacuums to manufacturing respirators. Because of the company's expertise in manufacturing and established culture of curiosity, Dyson could pivot to a new product area and innovate.  COVID-19 has proven to be a catalyst for innovation. To keep innovation moving forward, focus on questioning assumptions and simplifying so you and your organization can become agile and be able to pivot, no matter what is happening in the world.
