We're back for our new season and starting with an extra special episode recorded in the beautiful Maldivian resort of Dhigali where our presenter Lisa recently spent an idyllic week. Who better to give us a real look at life in the Maldives than resort manager Hassan Said who, having dropped out of school age 14 and one of 11 siblings, very quickly had to start start work. We talk growing up in the islands, happy days working in his grandfather's tin workshop, how the arrival of tourism changed the Maldives, entering ‘a completely different world' in tourism, spending a year at sea, being on a ferry at the time of the 2004 tsunami, navigating Covid, ‘island culture's' happy laid-back attitude, feeling incredibly proud of the beautiful resort he has helped create and the power of loving the community you live in. Lisa travelled to Dhigali and Velassaru Universal Resorts with the wonderful Kuoni www.kuoni.co.uk. It was utter paradise! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Bob Morrell, Sales Trainer, Executive Coach, Conference Speaker, Podcast Host and Writer I am speaking to Bob Morrell in this episode about Bobs early life as an actor and then his journey to running his company Reality Training (and his spell as a rock star vocalist. ) There is so much content about getting your message out there which every musician would benefit from; some of this from the viewpoint of acting which you will hear easily translates to the musician and the music educator. This includes the particularly problematic area of pricing! Bob and Jeremy Blake set up Reality Training in 2002. Reality Training is a sales and management development business geared towards improving the sales and service capabilities of your consultants and managers. At present, Bob and Jeremy work with many leading organisations in industries such as retail, travel, software sales and financial services. Bob and Jeremy first met at drama school and have known each other for over twenty years, which gives them a very unique way of interacting as only old friends can. This makes their sessions highly memorable, entertaining and extremely positive experiences, along with their combined experience. Bob, Jeremy, and the trainers at Reality Training bring over 30 years of sales experience to life in order to challenge and motivate others to achieve more. I met Manfred Ritchard in New York in November 1986 because my friend Eliane who later became his wife wanted to meet up with me even though Manfred had other plans. The next time I met him at the helicopter pad in the Grand Canyon while our clients were flying over the gorge and he gave me hundreds of useful tips how to earn more money during my roundtrips in the West. We have known each other for many years and have lots in common; we both worked as tour guides for Kuoni, the largest Swiss tour operator. Today, Manfred Ritchard is a very successful trainer, motivational speaker, and lecturer. He is well known in the Swiss travel industry and has been supporting many well established companies in introducing innovative sales concepts. He I admire his eloquence and expertise, and I love his sense of humor.

The government's new COVID quarantine rules have been described as 'ridiculous', 'daft' and will have a devastating impact on travel and hospitality. The industry is fighting back through a PR campaign led by The PC Agency founder Paul Charles and backed by 500 businesses. Charles, Kuoni head of comms Rachel O'Reilly and PRWeek editor-in-chief Danny Rogers discuss whether the Quash Quarantine campaign can force the government into a quick u-turn, and whether the industry can fully recover. Almost all industries have been affected by COVID-19, but travel and hospitality are perhaps the worst hit. Peter sat down with Simon Jeffries, who is head of product at Carrier, to discuss this crisis. They are owned by DER Touristik, also owns Kuoni (among several others), so they are hugely influential not just in luxury travel, but across the whole sector. They talk about Carrier pre-COVID, what it looks like now, and what Simon sees it looking like in the future. Simon tells Peter that booking fell off a cliff in March, but green shoots are already starting to show. They discussed the destinations that are likely to be popular for their clients as restrictions are eased, how their clients will get there safely, and how hotels will put on a show of new health and safety regulations. Nobody knows exactly what will happen as we move forward, or how different governments will deal with this crisis. By sharing information and insights within the industry, we can try and ensure we are in a strong position when things start to re-open. "Family life on wheels" Sheng-Hsiung est Taïwanais.
With so many questions surrounding coronavirus and its implications for the industry, on this episode we have used the audio from a recent Facebook Live Q&A we held here in our offices with Abta’s director of legal affairs Simon Bunce, Kuoni senior sales and operations manager Brad Bennetts and Travlaw senior partner Matt Gatenby. The video proved hugely popular and we received dozens of questions from our readers, so we thought it would be useful to broadcast through another medium to make sure even more of you can access the advice from our expert panel. The session was moderated by our editor in chief, Lucy Huxley.
If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support Inspired in part by Long Bets and the new decade, I'm making some predictions for the coming ten years. They're based around areas that I think will be the biggest points of improvement and decline for humankind: Power and population, politics, food, climate, travel, artificial intelligence and technology. A lot of these predictions are nothing more than a stab in the dark and a lot, I hope, do not come true. Nonetheless, it's fun to ponder what might be in ten years time… Power and Population: _ By 2030, one country will have shutdown its citizens access to the internet for a total of at least 366 days – 10% of the decade. _ Freedom House report that we are already seeing these trends in countries like Iraq and Iran, where the state maintains significant control over the internet backbone, in China, which limits access to foreign resources and requires foreign companies to adapt to domestic regulations, and in Russia, which is increasingly ordering network shutdowns in relation to protests. In India, as I type this on December 27th 2019, the longest internet shutdown in the country's history is taking place: 145 days and counting. I define ‘internet shutdown' as blocking or punishing free access to the open internet beyond what is already in operation at the close of 2019 and we'll use the stats of Freedom House, NetBlocks, or their equivalents, to judge whether this prediction was correct in a decade. Politics: _ By 2030, at least one country 2019's United Kingdom will have re-entered something that is, or that resembles, the European Union. _ I predict that the United Kingdom will leave the European Union in the early 2020s but that by the end of the decade at least one of its current countries, England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, will be a member of something that, if not identical, is almost functionally identical to the European Union. Furthermore, I predict the country will have entered into the alliance without consulting the public in the same manner they were consulted when asked if they should leave. Food: _ By 2030, per capita meat consumption in both the USA and UK will be lower than it is in 2019. _ As we come to terms with the impact that food and faming has on our planet and begin to realise the health risks associated with our modern day diets, I predict that per capita meat consumption in both the United States and in the United Kingdom will be lower than it is today. In 2019, each person eats approximately 99.3kg (USA) and 61kg (UK) of meat according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, whose numbers (or the closest thereof) will judge the success of this prediction in 2030. Travel: _ By 2030, almost every high-street travel agent in operation today will go the way of Thomas Cook. _ As international travel continues to become faster and cheaper and as companies like Airbnb continue to make it easier for ordinary people to market their homes as destinations, it is my prediction that only travel agents that specialise in luxury long-haul holidays (like Kuoni) or multi-leg journeys (like STA) will still be in operation come the end of 2029. Climate: _ By 2030, the UK's hottest temperature will be at 45ºC or more. _ As we fail to act on the climate crisis and as tipping points begin to set in, I predict that by the end of the decade the UK's hottest temperature ever recorded will be registered by the Met Office at 45ºC or more. That's 6.3º hotter than the current record set in 2019 and 0.9º hotter than the record temperature set in France, also in 2019. Artificial Intelligence: _ By 2030, a non-human entity will have passed the Turing test. _ The Turing test is simple. Put a computer and a human on one side of a wall and a human tester on the other side. If the tester can't recognise which candidate is human and which candidate is a computer after a series of questions, the computer has successfully passed the Turing test. I predict that by the close of the decade, a computer will have consistently ‘tricked' a panel of multiple human testers into believing it is the human. Technology: By 2030, the code that powers Decade Clock will be obsolete. At the start of 2020, I'm launching Decade Clock, an online clock that displays where humankind is in any ten year period. It's written in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. It works client-side and draws the clock face itself using Canvas. It is probably one of the best way to build it in 2019 but I predict that, with zero improvements or maintenance to the original version, it will not work in whatever constitutes a ‘modern day, up-to-date browser' in 2030. All of these predictions have one thing in common: The speed of technological advancement is phenomenal but we have to question what we stand to lose when our feet are bound to the accelerator. Yes, that might include frivolous luxuries like experts in travel and silly little art projects, but it'll also include things of more consequence, like free and open communication and potentially our very humanity.
When X went on holiday to Sri Lanka she was raped and assaulted by a hotel employee. In this claim against the tour operator she is seeking compensation but, as we discuss in this episode, it will require a stretched interpretation of EU law. There is also a close examination of the likely fallout if the Court of Appeal judgment is allowed to stand. Music from bensound.com
