How Zazou Saeed Helped Ban Single-Use Plastics in the Maldives

Plastic pollution in the Maldives has become a serious environmental crisis, despite the nation's image as a pristine paradise. In this episode of How to Protect the Ocean, host Andrew Lewin shares the inspiring story of Zazou Saeed—a young Maldivian surfer and ocean advocate—who rose to become a local conservation hero by campaigning against single-use plastics. From leading beach cleanups to working with NGOs like Save the Beach and Parley for the Oceans, Zazou sparked a grassroots movement that helped influence national policy. Ocean conservation through local action is a powerful force. Zazou used art, storytelling, and education to mobilize Maldivian youth and drive home the consequences of plastic pollution on coral reefs, sea turtles, and marine life. Her efforts were instrumental in shifting public awareness and building momentum toward the Maldives' plastic bans. This episode highlights how one passionate person can make a massive difference for their community—and the ocean. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 11th of September and here are the headlines.A 30-member delegation in West Bengal has reached out to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding a meeting to discuss junior doctors' proposals. In their email, they asserted the need for a larger representation, saying, “We would like to appeal that the delegation team should consist of 30 representatives as there are many stakeholder medical institutions involved.” Previously, the junior doctors rejected the government's offer for a 10-member delegation, insisting on a group of 25-35. Now, the chief secretary has written to the junior doctors inviting them for a meeting – for the second time since yesterday – at Nabanna, but with a rider: only 12 -15 representatives will be allowed.Rahul Gandhi's statements during his visit to the United States has once again stirred trouble back home. Hitting out at the Congress MP over his comments on reservations, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that “no one can mess with nation's security”. Shah said, “I want to tell Rahul Gandhi that as long as BJP is there, neither can anyone abolish quota nor can anyone mess with nation's security. By speaking about abolishing quota, Rahul Gandhi once again brought Congress' anti-reservation face to the forefront."Despite the imposition of prohibitory orders barring the gathering of more than five people at Sanjauli in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district, thousands thronged the sub-town today demanding the demolition of a mosque. At least two people were injured when police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protesters. They also used water cannons to prevent the protesters from reaching near the mosque, which was cordoned off. Sources in the district police intelligence wing said that people from other districts of the state had reached Sanjauli to join the protest against the mosque. What started off with a handshake turned into a fierce battle as Donald Trump and Kamala Harris faced each other Tuesday night during the Presidential debate for the first, and possibly, the last time ahead of the November polls. Inflation, abortion, immigration and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were some of the issues that took centrestage in the debate moderated by ABC News anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis. The early pleasantries set the tone for the 90-minute exchange, with Harris baiting Trump with jabs over the economy during his presidency, while the latter retorted with jibes similar to his debate with Joe Biden.Just a few days ahead of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu's bilateral visit to India, two Maldivian ministers resigned following their suspension in January after they insulted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dawn reported. A government official told AFP News that both had resigned citing “personal reasons”. President Muizzu had suspended three ministers for criticizing PM Modi's visit to Lakshadweep to promote local tourism, including calling him a “clown,” “terrorist,” and “puppet of Israel.”This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

A delegation consisting of former Union Minister Salman Khurshid, Rajya Sabha MP Mukul Wasnik, Pawan Khera, and Gurdeep Sappal met with officials of the poll body in the capital. The Supreme Court dismissed a plea filed today by Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh challenging an order of the Gujarat High Court, which refused to quash summons issued against him in a defamation case for alleged comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's educational qualification. Kejriwal and Singh had challenged the summons issued by a trial court in the case filed by the Gujarat University. The AAP launched its campaign for the Lok Sabha elections today, which the party describes as a movement, and issued "Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se" as its tagline, seeking support for its founder and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Aam Aadmi Party national general secretary Dr. Sandeep Pathak said the party workers would visit each house, meet every family in Delhi, sit with them, and explain how their Chief Minister had been arrested in a false case and how they would lose the benefits of the policies and revolutionary steps brought by him if the BJP comes to power.Former Maldives minister Mariyam Shiuna apologized today via a post on X after a controversy erupted over a social media post in which she had used an Ashoka Chakra-like symbol to replace the compass on a Maldivian Democratic Party poster, along with a plea to vote for her party in the upcoming Maldivian elections. This is not the first time she has been in the news over similar issues. Shiuna is among the three ministers who were suspended for making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India.Today, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. This type of solar eclipse is a rare event for any particular spot. What are the implications of Maldives' March 15 deadline to India for withdrawing troops?

Relations between India and Maldives seem to have hit a rough patch. First came some controversial remarks from Maldivian politicians on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lakshadweep visit, prompting a ‘boycott Maldives' campaign on Indian social media. Then came a joint press communiqué with China, which committed to “elevating strategic cooperation” between Maldives and China. This was followed by remarks from Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, on his return from China, that although Maldives was a small country, it “won't be bullied”, that the “Indian Ocean does not belong to any one country”, and that Maldives “is not in anyone's backyard”. But for India, the most troubling development is Maldives setting a March 15 deadline – effectively an ultimatum -- to withdraw all its troops from the island nation. What exactly does all this mean for India? Is it purely an effect of Maldives' domestic politics, with general elections due in March? Or should New Delhi be concerned about a more enduring shift in Maldivian foreign policy? Tune in to know more!

Episode Notes Choice Hotels has long relied on traditional broadcast and outdoor billboard advertising to drum up brand awareness. But the company is turning to streaming platforms including Spotify and using a touch of celebrity in its new year-long marketing campaign, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill.  Choice Hotels is experimenting with digital-video ads and podcast placements, which are cheaper than traditional TV sports, to better target demographic groups. The company will also feature Emmy winner Keegan-Michael Key in a set of six spots. Chief Marketing Officer Noha Abdalla said a celebrity like Key could help Choice Hotels grab consumers' attention quickly on TikTok in particular.  Next, we turn to the fallout from the recent accident aboard an Alaska Airlines aircraft that's temporarily grounded certain Boeing 737 Max planes. Although Alaska and United Airlines both canceled hundreds of flights over the weekend, both airlines may not suffer a major financial hit from the grounding, reports Edward Russell, editor of Skift publication Airline Weekly. Raymond James analyst Savanthi Syth estimates that the financial hit from the grounding could be akin to that from a severe weather event. That's based on the belief that the Federal Aviation Administration will explain what airlines need to inspect, which would allow them to begin returning to service.  Boeing provided airlines information on Monday on how to inspect the planes, according to Reuters.   Finally, Indian online travel agency EaseMyTrip has suspended all flights to the Maldives in what the company's CEO called “solidarity with the nation,” reports Asia Editor Peden Doma Bhutia.   Calls for boycotts of the Maldives have grown after many in India have accused Maldivian politicians of disparaging Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi sparked a social media controversy after urging Indian travelers to visit India's Lakshadweep Islands, where he recently traveled to. Bhutia notes angry tweets called Modi's Lakshadweep visit a suggestion to visit domestic destinations instead of the Maldives. India was the Maldives' largest tourism source market in 2023, with roughly 210,000 Indians visiting the archipelago.  Episode Presenter and Producer: Jose Marmolejos

The bench said the Gujarat Government had no jurisdiction to entertain the application for remission of the convicts or to pass orders granting them remission as it was not the "appropriate government" to do so under the relevant provisions of the law.Union Home Minister Amit Shah, will visit Jammu tomorrow to review security and the progress of development works initiated in Jammu and Kashmir. Shah's visit also comes weeks after four Indian Army personnel were killed and three others injured in a militant attack in the Poonch district on the 21st of December. Three civilians, who were picked up for questioning by the security forces after the attack, also allegedly died in custody. The High Commissioner of Maldives to India Ibrahim Shaheeb met officials of the Ministry of External Affairs today amid a row over remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by a number of Maldivian ministers on social media. Reportedly, MEA officials conveyed concern over the remarks. On Sunday, the Maldives government of President Mohamed Muizzu suspended three ministers for making derogatory remarks about PM Modi and the people of India.Though no ‘Cold Wave' warnings have been notified by the Met Department in the coming days, ‘Cold Day' and ‘Severe Cold Day' alerts have been issued over parts of north India like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan. Fog and dense fog conditions are likely to prevail in the mornings over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and isolated parts of Bihar from 8th to 10th of January. The weather agency predicted chances of rainfall in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadeep, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The Supreme Court today stayed the judgement of the Bombay High Court that had directed the Election Commission of India to immediately conduct a bypoll for the Pune Lok Sabha seat. It became vacant after the death of MP Girish Bapat. The SC bench issued notice to respondents in an appeal made by ECI challenging the Bombay HC order and said they will "lay down the law in March or April". Maldives has elected a new President, Mohamed Muizzu from the Progressive Party of Maldives. In the elections that concluded in September, he defeated the incumbent, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of the Maldivian Democratic Party. The elections were also viewed by many as a referendum on the country's foreign policy. While Solih was perceived as pro-India, Muizzu is seen as pro-China. One of the main election promises made by Muizzu was to end any Indian military presence on Maldivian territory. Muizzu is set to formally take office on November 17. What prompted Muizzu to build his poll campaign around opposition to Indian military presence in Maldives? Will Maldives foreign policy now take a pro-China tilt? And for India, what are the strategic implications of Solih's exit from power?

Ep. 80: Kantara and Rocketry: Two heroes' journeys in a Hindu context

Shadow Warrior by Rajeev Srinivasan

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 7, 2022 7:54

This essay was published by firstpost.com.The Hero's Journey is a common metaphor used by storytellers from the Ramayana to the Iliad, and in innumerable modern works. You have the hero rising, then facing odds that are so overwhelming that he is on the verge of failure, but he often wins in the end, and is transformed or redeemed in the process. And indeed, for each of us, our own lives are heroes' journeys, as the mythologist Joseph Campbell elucidated in a series of excellent documentaries. Both the recent films Kantara and Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, in my opinion, fall into this broad categorization; but what's notable and different is that they are about very Hindu heroes, quite a departure from the standard Indian film (especially of the Urduwood variety) where overt Hindus are usually depicted with contempt or disgust. The two films are very different from each other, of course, but it is telling that they both resonate with audiences, in a visible departure from the conventional wisdom that holds that neither a Hindu nor a nationalist should be depicted with sympathy, and especially not a Hindu nationalist. There is another Hindu meme: the local and the national are not meaningfully distinct, just as the Atman and Brahman are not. Kantara, set in the Tulu-land of Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, is instantly understandable to Hindus anywhere; and Rocketry, the story of a patriot of Tamil origin living Thiruvananthapuram, who is attacked and to whom tejovadham is done by mysterious, malign forces, is understandable to any Hindu, we whose face hostility in India and elsewhere. When I saw Kantara, I was surprised by how normal the story was to me: of course, obviously, there are spirits, or demi-gods/daivas all around. This is something that I grew up with. I remember as a small boy being taken by my grandfather to the bharani festival of the village Devi temple in central Travancore: there were wondrous, magical things there then. Much later, I watched theyyams in Malabar, which is adjacent to Tulunadu, and the wonderful costumes are almost identical to those in the Bhoota kola depicted in the film; some of most impressive were thee-pothi (the fire-goddess) and the gulikan (the fierce deity identical to guliga in the film), especially as they performed at dusk. The belief in possession by spirits, as in the hypnotic sarpam-thullals (serpent-dances) of Travancore or of velichapads (oracles) in many parts of Kerala, holds no surprises for me. It is easy for a practicing Hindu to believe in them. It is not hard to imagine benign (and malign) spirits all around, for example as in O V Vijayan's story The Little Ones, luminous ancestral spirits that help in times of trouble. I had a personal experience of the Divine, on my first trip to Sabarimala when I was a teenager. It was an incredible religious experience: for a moment, a glimpse of something extraordinary, a powerful vision of the Infinity of Grace. My friend, a doctor, tells me of medical miracles that can only be attributed to the power of prayer and Divine Grace. In Kantara, the protagonist Siva consistently and carefully avoids the bhoota kola, as he was traumatized by the unexplained disappearance of his father, the oracular dancer of the village. He tries to lead the life of a carefree youth, drinking, hunting wild boar and getting into fights; but the panjurli daiva calls to him in his dreams. Spoiler alert: his hero's journey culminates in a spectacular finale. In Rocketry, the fictionalized story of the real-life Nambi Narayanan, the hero's journey is even more evident. After early and brilliant success as a rocket engineer, his life and career were ruined in what was apparently a sordid combination of commercial sabotage by a three-letter acronym spy agency, and a power struggle among Congress politicians in Kerala, with some corrupt policemen in the mix.Even if it is a little exaggerated for rhetorical purposes, Nambi Narayanan's efforts to convince Rolls-Royce's head (a Scot), the French Ariane rocket program, and the Soviet cryogenic labs to transfer technology and know-how to ISRO are amazing stories that I too had not heard, even though I live in Thiruvananthapuram, where Narayanan and Abdul Kalam did their work on solid and liquid-propelled rockets. Despite Narayanan's value to the Indian space program, and the evident holes in the 1994 Maldivian spy story (see my Rediff column Who killed India's cryogenic engine?) it took a court saga of 24 years to clear his name, and to get the redemption he deserved (a Padma Bhushan in 2019). In the meantime, India's cryogenic engine was delayed by 19 years. What is remarkable in the film -- and it is disturbing that this should even have to be highlighted -- is that Narayanan is shown as an unapologetic Hindu. There is nothing whatsoever that prevents an observant and pious Hindu from also being an engineer and scientist: no dogma. But the prevailing filmi wisdom, which has become “truth by repeated assertion” is that Hindu rituals are superstition, but Abrahamic superstition is somehow ‘scientific'. The very fact that such films are being made, and are becoming blockbusters, shows that the narrative is shifting (the so-called Overton window). There is pushback, though: a little-known band in Kerala is suing Kantara over the song ‘Varaha-roopam', which has Sanskrit lyrics and traditional tribal music. Because traditional knowledge cannot be copyrighted, it is likely that their intellectual property claim is not sustainable. There were also people grumbling that Narayanan was lionized and that he wasn't as key to ISRO's success as the film makes him out to be. Maybe, but even if it was 50% exaggerated, he is still an amazing engineer and manager, and in any case it was unconscionable by any measure to torture him for 50 days, defame him, and destroy his career. Those who ordered the hit have never been named. My heroes have long been those among us who fight for Dharma and righteousness: Professor Eachara Warrier, Major Shaitan Singh. I am happy to now add Dr Nambi Narayanan to that list, and perhaps Siva, who brings to life the forest deities.1020 words, 3 Nov 2022 This is a public episode. In this 124th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. This week, we discuss the biology, geology, and conservation of the Bahamas, particularly the Exumas islands. How do parrotfish turn coral into sand, what's up with tropicbirds, and what does it mean that all Caribbean beaches have trash on them? Apologies for the sound quality during the videos. We also discuss the lifting of federal mask mandates on transportation; the White House arguing that “affirmative care” for children who say they are transgender is “best practice”; the new czar of disinformation, brought to you by the Department of Homeland Security; and whether our President is fit for office. Finally, we spend a few minutes talking about ancient children playing in the footprints of giant sloths, and whether Indiana Jones was correct in suggesting that little scorpions are scarier than big ones. ***** Support the sponsors of the show: Ned: is a CBD company that uses USDA certified organic full spectrum hemp oil, and creates specialty blends to help with stress and sleep.
