Leading up to the November election, pollsters across the nation showed Arizona to be one of the most swingy of the swing states. How Arizonans would vote in the presidential race and down-ballot contests were the equivalent of a coin flip. But as results were tallied over the past few days, it is clear now which party won convincingly. It's not necessarily the red wave effect, though. All of these races had the potential to go to Republicans or Democrats, proving that Arizona is just right of center. One Arizona race that moved against that tide was for the U.S. Senate. Late Monday night, Democrat Ruben Gallego clinched a win over Republican Kari Lake. This week on The Gaggle, a politics podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, hosts Ron Hansen and Mary Jo Pitzl discuss how Gallego prevailed over the red wall and what's next for both the legislature and Kari Lake. Late Monday night, March 18, 2024, Canada's lawmakers voted to keep a key part of the country's foreign policy on Israel-Palestine the same as it's been for decades. The controversial opposition-led motion, originally put forward to the House of Commons by the NDP's foreign affairs critic and a longtime Palestinian advocate, Heather McPherson, called for Canada to immediately recognize Palestine as a state. She and others donned keffiyehs and watermelon pins during the House vote. But a last-minute deal with the Liberal government saw the NDP agree to remove that seemingly critical demand. In the end, the motion simply restated Canada's longstanding view that a Palestinian state must be contingent on a two-state solution, and should come only as part of a negotiated peace between Israel and Palestinians. The motion, which is non-binding and purely symbolic, nonetheless passed 204-117, leading to celebrations from the NDP, Green Party and Bloc Québécois—while Jewish communal organizations swiftly expressed outrage over the motion's call for an immediate ceasefire, continued funding for UNRWA and a ban on weapons sales to Israel. (The motion also calls for the immediate release of Israeli hostages and blames Hamas for the murders and kidnappings of Israelis.) On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we bring you highlights from the fiery debate, including words from Jewish MPs who voted against the motion—including Anthony Housefather, Melissa Lantsman and Marty Morantz—as well as Jewish MPs who voted in favour, such as Liberal Julie Dabrusin and the NDP's Leah Gazan. (Karina Gould and Ya'ara Saks also voted in favour, while Ben Carr voted no.)
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for September 18, 2023.According to the National Weather Service on Monday it will be sunny with a high near 78 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area. Late Monday night into Tuesday morning there is a high chance of showers and potentially a thunderstorm.According to the Associated Press a judge found an Iowa man guilty Friday in the murder of a 10-year-old girl who was missing for eight months before her remains were found in a pond.51-year-old Henry Earl Dinkins was found guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of Breasia Terrell, whose disappearance July 10, 2020, led to massive searches by dozens of volunteers and numerous law enforcement agencies. A fisherman found her body in March 2021 in a rural area north of Davenport.Sentencing was set for Oct. 11, at which Dinkins faces a mandatory term of life in prison.According to the report, after the decision, as deputies were removing Dinkins from the courtroom, spectators erupted in cheers. No one was injured after firefighters responded to a fire raging at a farm southwest of Cedar Rapids on Sunday.According to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, firefighters from Fairfax and Cedar Rapids were called just after noon on Sunday to a fire at a farm at the 7500 block of 16th Ave SW.Crews arriving at the scene saw that a corn bin and barn there were fully aflame. The fire had progressed to such a degree on those two structures that firefighters decided that they could not be saved, and they worked to contain the fire and protect nearby structures, according to the release.Once a perimeter protecting those other buildings had been established, firefighters attacked the fire consuming the barn and silo from multiple positions, quickly bringing the fire under control. The corn bin and barn were a total loss, according to the release. No firefighter injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.Iowa Democrats voted on Saturday to hold their 2024 caucuses on Jan. 15, the same day as Republicans. The date fills in one detail as the party works to plan its calendar and presidential nominating contest after being booted from being the first-in-the-nation presidential nominating contest by the national party earlier this year. The date also falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday.Under the party's proposal, the caucuses would only be a party organizing meeting, while the presidential preference count that has historically put the caucuses in the national spotlight will be held via a mail-in process at a different time.

The suspect has been "taken into custody without incident" following a massive manhunt, said police.4日下午晚些时候,警方确认枪击事件的嫌疑人为22岁的罗伯特·克里莫三世。警方表示,在大规模搜捕后,嫌疑人已“毫无意外地被逮捕”。A police officer briefly chased the suspect as he drove about five miles north of the shooting scene before the man pulled over and was taken into custody, said Highland Park police.高地公园警方表示,一名警官在嫌疑人离开枪击现场以北约5英里外的交通检查站将其拦下,短暂追捕后,嫌疑人被逮捕。The shooter apparently used a "high-powered rifle" to fire from a spot atop a commercial building and targeted people attending the parade. Late Monday night a draft decision was leaked to the press and reported by Politico, a leftist media outlet. This decision concerns the Supreme Court case Mississippi v Dobbs regarding 15 week abortion ban legislation passed in 2018.The decision was written by Justice Samuel Alito with the effect of removing the precedent of Roe v Wade and the subsequent cases like Planned Parenthood v Casey.Does this mean it is settled?Hardly? But is this decision real?Probably? Why did this come out now and not in an actual decision in several weeks? One word - intimidation. This leak, most certainly by a leftist law clerk, risking reputation and employment to let everyone know that this decision is forth coming and they need to intimidate the 5 justices that have signed on to it with every means necessary to avoid the ACTUAL decision that would be forthcoming.Let's get to some details and pray for peace and protection for the justices and of course the innocent baby lives that could be saved by this legistlation.I'm Matt Odegaard and this is Church PublicLIKE, SUBSCRIBE, SHARE!---Thanks for watching! Warning: Distressing contentThousands of Afghans rushed into Kabul's main airport Monday, some so desperate to escape the Taliban that they held onto a military jet as it took off and plunged to their deaths. At least seven people died in the chaos, US officials said, as America's longest war ended with its enemy the victor. The crowds came while the Taliban enforced their rule over the capital of five million people after a lightning advance across the country that took just over a week to dethrone the country's Western-backed government. There were no major reports of abuses or fighting, but many residents stayed home and remained fearful after the insurgents' advance saw prisons emptied and armouries looted. Can't believe my eyes. Elsewhere, security forces and politicians handed over their provinces and bases without a fight, likely believing the two-decade Western experiment to remake Afghanistan would not survival the resurgent Taliban. The last American troops had planned to withdraw at the end of the month."The world is following events in Afghanistan with a heavy heart and deep disquiet about what lies ahead," warned United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. As the US military and others continued evacuation flights, Afghans swarmed over the international airport's tarmac. Some climbed into aircraft parked on the taxiway, while others dangled precariously off a jet bridge.US troops took positions to guard the active runway, but the crowd stormed past them and their armoured vehicles. Gunshots rang out. As one US Air Force Boeing C-17 Globemaster III tried to take off, a helicopter did low runs in front of it to try to drive people off the runway.Videos showed a group of Afghans hanging onto the plane just before takeoff and several falling through the air as the airplane rapidly gained altitude over the city.Senior American military officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing operation, told the Associated Press that the chaos left seven dead, including several who fell from the flight. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said US forces killed two people he described as carrying weapons in the melee. He said 1000 more US troops would be deployed to secure the airfield and back up the 2500 already there.Hundreds of people run alongside a US Air Force C-17 transport plane, some climbing on the plane, as it moves down a runway of the international airport, in Kabul, Afghanistan. Photo / via APAll flights at the airport — both military and civilian — were halted until Afghan civilians can be cleared from the runway, Kirby added.Late Monday night, hundreds of people remained trapped between American forces trying to push them out of the airport and Taliban forces trying to keep them in, witnesses said. An Associated Press journalist also saw what appeared to be an airstrike target two vehicles near the airport.Shafi Arifi, who had a ticket to travel to Uzbekistan on Sunday, was unable to board his plane because it was packed with people who had raced across the tarmac and climbed aboard, with no police or airport staff in sight."There was no room for us to stand," said the 24-year-old. "Children were crying, women were shouting, young and old men were so angry and upset, no one could hear each other. There was no oxygen to breathe."After a woman fainted and was carried off the plane, Arifi gave up and returned home.Other Afghans, like Rakhmatula Kuyash, are also trying to leave through land border crossings, all of which are now controlled by the Taliban."I'm lost and I don't know what to do," said Kuyash, who crossed into Uzbekistan on Sunday after leaving his children and rel...

China has hit back at New Zealand after accusations of Chinese-sponsored hacking going on.Late Monday night, GCSB Minister Andrew Little said New Zealand had established links between Chinese state-sponsored actors known as Advanced Persistent Threat 40 (APT40) and malicious cyber activity in New Zealand.Little has called on China to stop the hacking.Beijing responded, saying the claims are lies, slander and ridiculous, and have threatened devastating consequences if the rhetoric continues.Andrew Hampton, the Director-General at the GCSB, told Heather du Plessis Allan New Zealand has been aware for several years about malicious activity by the Chinese ministry."In 2018 the New Zealand Government called them out for a compromise of a range of global managed service provides, which they used to get to customers."If you look at the Minister's statement it's actually talking about two related things - the first is an ongoing campaign that is a whole range of attacks that have been underway for a number of years, and then there's specifically the compromise of the Microsoft exchange which occurred at the start of the year.Hampton says the attribution process undertaken took some weeks to confirm who was responsible for the attacks."The New Zealand Government has raised with the Chinese embassy its concerns about this malicious cyber activity. The decision to go now and speak publically about this is driven by a couple of things - firstly that formal attribution process needed to be complete, but also to have as big as an effect as possible New Zealand wanted to make it a statement at the same time as a range of other like-minded countries did," Hampton adds.
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, June 23rd. Wednesday's weather looks to offer a break from rain, for the most part, before a chance for storms returns on Thursday. According to the National Weather Service, rain should mostly cease by 8 a.m. Wednesday morning in the Cedar Rapids area, giving way to eventually sunny skies. The high temperature is predicted to be near 85 degrees, with a moderate breeze. Officials released more information Tuesday about the Linn County Deputy shot in the line of duty Sunday night. They identified the deputy as 38-year-old William Halverson and listed him in serious but stable condition at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. 36-year-old Stacey Donahue, of Chicago, is accused of shooting 10 rounds at Halverson after shutting two Casey's employees into a cooler during a robbery. Halverson was struck several times but was wearing a protective vest. Donahue was apprehended after a 14-hour manhunt when he was spotted nearby by a KCRG-TV crew. The Cedar Rapids City Council on Tuesday approved the city's standard tax incentives for FedEx to locate a massive $108.6 million https://www.thegazette.com/local-government/cedar-rapids-city-council-to-consider-109-million-fedex-warehouse-and-distribution-center/ (warehouse and distribution center) in the city's southwest quadrant that will create 434 mostly part-time jobs — offering an estimated $6.1 million tax rebate over 10 years. The council approved a term sheet outlining the scope of the project and tax reimbursements on the proposal for an approximately 479,000-square-foot warehouse, which Indianapolis-based developer Scannell Properties. Construction is anticipated to start by Aug. 1 and end by Sept. 30, 2022. City Economic Development Analyst Caleb Mason said the development allows FedEx Ground Package System to expand its ground service network and its local footprint, as well as provide direct support to its hub in St. Paul, Minn. A district court judge in Cedar Rapids has blocked a law signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds last year that requires a 24-hour waiting period before a woman can get an abortion, marking another setback for attempts by the governor and Republican lawmakers to enact more abortion restrictions in Iowa. Late Monday, 6th Judicial District Court Judge Mitchell Turner issued a ruling that declared the 2020 law unconstitutional. Abortion rights advocates had asserted it placed an undue burden on women seeking the medical procedure. According to the ruling, the passage of this law violated the single subject rule, as the abortion requirement had been tacked on as an amendment to another bill passed by the Iowa Legislature. In addition, the legislative process left no opportunity for constituents to provide input on or be fairly informed before the legislation was passed by state lawmakers in the final hours of the Legislative session. The Governor's Office made it clear on Tuesday the state intends to appeal the District Court decision to the Iowa Supreme Court. The U.S. House pressed swiftly forward Tuesday toward impeachment or other steps to forcibly remove President Donald Trump from office, even as Trump blamed Democratic foes and not himself for last week's deadly attack on the Capitol. He targeted the lawmakers who are pushing for his ouster, saying that it's “a really terrible thing that they're doing.”“To continue on this path, I think it's causing tremendous danger to our country, and it's causing tremendous anger," he said. He accepted no blame for the Capitol attack and said, “I want no violence.”The defeated president, in his first remarks to reporters since last week's violence, showed no remorse for firing up the crowd ahead of the the deadly invasion with comments that now are part of the impeachment charge of inciting insurrection. The president spoke as he left for Texas to survey the border wall with Mexico, taking no questions, after the most serious and deadly domestic incursion at the Capitol in the nation's history.Impeachment ahead, the House on Tuesday will first try to convince the vice president and Cabinet to act even more quickly to remove Trump from office, warning he is a threat to democracy in the remaining days of his presidency.House lawmakers are reconvening at the Capitol for the first time since the deadly pro-Trump riot to approve a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to declare the president unable to serve. Pence is not expected to take any such action. The House would next move swiftly to impeach Trump.“We have to be very tough and very strong right now in defending the Constitution and democracy,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., an author of both pieces of legislation, in an interview.Trump faces a single charge — “incitement of insurrection” — in the impeachment resolution that the House will begin debating Wednesday, a week before Democrat Joe Biden is set to be inaugurated, Jan. 20.The unprecedented events, which could make Trump the first U.S. president to be twice impeached, are unfolding in a nation bracing for more unrest. The FBI has warned ominously of potential armed protests in Washington and many states by Trump loyalists ahead of Biden's inauguration. In a dark foreshadowing, the Washington Monument was closed to the public and the inauguration ceremony on the west steps of the Capitol will be off limits to the public. It all added up to stunning final moments for Trump's presidency as Democrats and a growing number of Republicans declare he is unfit for office and could do more damage after inciting a mob that violently ransacked the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday.A Capitol police officer died from injuries suffered in the riot, and police shot a woman during the violence. Three others died in what authorities said were medical emergencies.Late Monday, the entire Congressional Hispanic Caucus, all 34 members, unanimously agreed to support impeachment, calling for Trump's immediate removal.“It is clear that every moment Trump remains in office, America is at risk,” said a statement from the caucus, led by Rep. Raul Ruiz, D-Ca. It said Trump "must be held accountable” for his actions.Democrats aren't the only ones who say Trump needs to go.Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., spoke to House GOP colleagues late Monday of the significance of the vote, and encouraged them to consider it a “vote of conscience,” according to a person granted anonymity to discuss the private call. She has spoken critically of Trump's actions but has not said publicly how she will vote.Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania joined GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska over the weekend in calling for Trump to “go away as soon as possible.”Pence and Trump met late Monday for the first time since the Capitol attack, and had a “good conversation” pledging to continue working for the remainder of their terms, said a senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private meeting....
每日英語跟讀 Ep.1007: Two UK retail collapses threaten 25,000 jobs in 24 hours The UK retail industry suffered one of the harshest blows yet after two of the country's best-known retailers collapsed, putting 25,000 jobs at risk in less than 24 hours. 英國兩家最知名的零售商在不到二十四小時內倒閉,兩萬五千個工作可能不保,這是英國零售業所遭受最嚴峻的打擊之一。 Debenhams said Tuesday morning it's preparing to close its doors for good after failing to find a buyer. Late Monday last week, Arcadia Group, the retail empire of billionaire Sir Philip Green, which owns brands including Topshop, Topman, Burton, Wallis, and Dorothy Perkins, began insolvency proceedings. It looks like a sad end for Debenhams, which can trace its history back to 1778, when William Clark set up a store in London's West End selling fabrics, bonnets, gloves and parasols. In 1813 William Debenham invested in the firm, which became Clark & Debenham. By 1950, the renamed Debenhams was one of the largest department store groups in the UK. Both retailers have anchored malls and main streets across Britain for decades and operate about 600 stores combined. Retail experts said the pandemic and the associated restrictions only tell part of the problems that the companies have encountered. Both have struggled to respond to the increased competition from low-cost rivals like Primark, as well as from online disruptors such as ASOS and Boohoo. The industry is set to lose 235,000 retail jobs this year, according to the Centre for Retail Research.
All 99 Iowa counties now have reported death related to COVID-19, according to Iowa Department of Public Health data reported Monday. Decatur County in south-central Iowa confirmed its first COVID-19 fatality. Until Monday, it was the state's last county to have not yet reported a death. Iowa reported 35 COVID-19 deaths in 23 counties in a 24-hour period ending 11 a.m. Monday, bringing the state's death toll to 2,717 Monday morning. The state also reported an additional 913 positive cases. Late Monday, Iowa health officials announced https://www.thegazette.com/subject/news/health/iowa-covid-19-deaths-reporting-change-coronavirus-20201207 (the state is modifying the way it records COVID-19 deaths), a change that will result in a net increase in the number of Iowans who will be recorded as having died of the virus. Kelly Garcia, the interim director of the state public health department, said Monday night that the state will now record COVID-19 deaths based on federal cause-of-death coding, which is based on the death record completed by the health care provider. The change will result in a net addition of 177 COVID-related deaths in Iowa as of Monday evening, pushing the state total for the pandemic to 2,898. The public will see the data changes on the state's coronavirus website Tuesday morning. Under the old system, the state recorded a COVID-19 death when a positive test result in the state system matched with a death certificate. Under the new system, only the COVID-19 cause-of-death coding is required for the state to recognize it as a COVID-19-related death. A matching positive test is not required. Garcia said the change will provide better consistency in reporting between county, state and federal government public health agencies, and will better enable researchers in the future to examine the impact of COVID-19 on Iowa. It also better aligns with how deaths related to other diseases are recorded. The changes will be applied retroactively to the start of the pandemic in March. Many counties will see an increase in total COVID-19-related deaths, while some will see a net decrease. About 16% of the net statewide increase came from Linn County, where the number of COVID-19-related deaths rose from 173 to 201 as of Monday night. Polk County's total dropped from 357 to 353, and Johnson County deaths from 41 to 39. Routine immunizations among school-aged children in Iowa https://thegazette.com/subject/news/health/childhood-immunization-schedule-iowa-routine-vaccination-coronavirus-vaccine-20201208 (are down more than 20 percent this year), according to a new report from insurance company Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Vaccines against measles, whooping cough and polio have declined over the past year across the state as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Wellmark and other public health experts say a continued delay in vaccines could lead to outbreaks of preventable diseases. The state immunization data was part of a larger report analyzing routine immunizations nationwide showing that children in the United States are on track to miss as many as 9 million vaccination doses by the end of 2020, a 26 percent decline from the previous year. According to data on vaccine doses in Iowa, the MMR vaccination to protect against measles, mumps and rubella has dropped about 21 percent from 2019 among Iowa children 10 and younger. The DTaP vaccine, meant for diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough, saw the biggest drop with nearly 24 percent decline. Polio immunizations declined 23.7 percent among Iowans 10 and younger. Nationwide, doses for MMR, DTaP and polio vaccines are each down about 16 percent compared to last year. https://www.thegazette.com/subject/news/business/transamerica-layoffs-cedar-rapids-iowa-20201207 (Transamerica laid off 53 Cedar Rapids employees) at the end of November, according to a notice filed...

Venezuela's massive, nationwide power outages, which began on Thursday, have so far resulted in at least 20 deaths, looting, and loss of access to food, water, fuel, and cash for many of the country's of 31 million residents. Late Monday, the United States said its diplomats would leave the US embassy in Caracas, citing deteriorating conditions.
