I don't know what it is, but life has just felt… hard. People misunderstanding one another. Feelings getting hurt. Work to do. Family to care for. Trying to balance it all while also cleaning the house and completing other mundane but necessary tasks. All piled on top of one another and it's hard not to wonder if something deeper is going on. Is this what spiritual warfare looks like in 21st century America? Is the enemy trying to just wear us out with all the compounded grief and piled-up hardships that we can never escape from? Or is God trying to test us, refine us in this season? Is there something in us that needs to be removed, and He is using this situation to do a spiritual surgery within us? What do we do in the face of hardship and trial? How does God want us to respond? That's what we're going to talk about on today's episode. I want to review some of the common reasons we experience hard times in this life and then share with you how I believe God is calling us to respond to each of them. Navigating overstimulating environments can be a challenge for highly sensitive people. In this episode of Awaken Your Wise Woman, host Elizabeth Cush talks with Martina Williams about coping strategies to manage your nervous system and walk comfortably in the world. “If you end up being in a really highly stimulating environment, make sure that you create space for quiet so you can begin to down-regulate.” — Martina Williams If you're a highly sensitive person, you may have grown up feeling different. You may have been told that you're too “too.” You may have had experiences or feelings that it didn't feel safe to talk about. Maybe that's still the case. The truth is, you're not too much, your feelings are legitimate, and there are many other women like you. And here's some really good news: Highly sensitive people can learn a lot from each other. In this episode of the Awaken Your Wise Woman podcast, host Elizabeth Cush, LCPC, a licensed professional therapist, founder of Progression Counseling in Annapolis, Md., and a mid-life women's life coach, welcomes Martina Williams, a trauma recovery therapist and a coach who works with the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. They talk about what it's like going through life as a highly sensitive person, share their experiences with using IFS to understand their reactions and increase their self-compassion, and offer tips for how introverts can avoid overwhelm and live with greater ease and comfort. Isn't it funny how, once you get settled into a good routine, something will change that makes it out of whack? Your child finally starts sleeping through the night, but then they start waking up super early. Or you dedicated nights for your quiet time, but then your teenager decides to use that time to chat with you before bed. Or you theme out your work days, only to have appointments or sports or something interfere. And so you go back to the drawing board to modify your routine and make it work for you. Not everything in life requires a major change. Sometimes it's just changing something simple, something small. But sometimes it is, indeed, bigger than you anticipated, and you have to adjust what you are doing. We've been going through some more life changes recently, and today I wanted to share a few of those with you, as well as how I've been re-evaluating what that means for me. In this episode, I speak to wedding MC and DJ Alan Marshall about overwhelm and how we can avoid it. In the world of weddings, where the expectation of perfection often looms large, legendary DJ Alan Marshall offers a breath of fresh air. With a career spanning over four decades, Alan has become a wellspring of wisdom in the wedding industry. His career began with humble origins, spinnin' records for his grandmother's friends, and evolved into a reputable profession as a DJ, master of ceremonies, and independent celebrant. His story is a testament to the idea that success is not a destination but a journey filled with trials, errors, and valuable lessons. Drawing inspiration from Brené Brown's "The Gift of Imperfection," talked about the fallacy of perfection, which is not only impossible to achieve but also can be detrimental to our growth and business practices. Alan wrapped up the conversation by sharing the invaluable role of mentors and coaches, advocating for the importance of surrounding oneself with people who can help navigate the industry and foster personal growth. On this episode, we talked about: Acknowledging insecurities and accepting imperfections to foster authentic and effective business practices. The value of trying new things and learning from mistakes. Practical strategies for managing overwhelm in the wedding industry. Consistency as a transformative force, such as small, daily actions can lead to significant achievements over time. The concept of "the space between," a critical moment of choice that can propel individuals forward or hold them back. The importance of continual learning and taking action to move forward. "Thanks for this episode. I wanted to get in touch to ask if you could share any advice for when your kids were younger and babies? I run a food business and recently had my first baby. I am struggling to manage the disparity between my big ambitions for my life and my reality. I want to be more capable... I want to take my business to the next level (which includes raising investment) I want to keep exercising and doing my favourite sports, I hate that my home is not organised and there is clutter around. I just don't know how to achieve all of this as I can't seem to find the time or the energy. Right now my partner is at home full time (looking for work) and is incredibly helpful both in the home and in caring for our daughter. But still I am not able to balance all of these things! The two that have slipped back are exercising and my home not being in great order and I'm barely keeping up at work. I sometimes would love to have a big family and you have really inspired me that this is possible (I have always thought about adoption) but then sometimes I think I can't even manage with one, how could I possibly manage more kids? I'd truly appreciate it if you could share any advice or discuss this on a podcast as there are so many young mums today struggling to manage the demands of modern day life, juggling work with younger kids and babies." If you are a mother (or father) of young children and often feel in overwhelm, then you need this episode -- especially if you are ambitious (like we are) and find yourself frustrated by your 'slow' progress as you pursue your dreams. We've been there! Listen to discover the strategies we've used to prevent and manage overwhelm and to accomplish WAY more than we ever thought possible. About six weeks ago, we adopted a puppy. We weren't necessarily planning for it, and so when we brought the dog home, we had a lot of changes we needed to make. And I've had to learn to ask for help when I need it. I've had to learn to recognize when something isn't working and then do something to fix it. And so I want to tell you: It's okay to have help. Not just when you're going through a major crisis, but all the time. We need help! And we need to be willing to find that help, to ask for that help. Yet all too often, we feel guilt or like a failure because we do. Or maybe we feel like we are burdening others because we're asking for what we feel is too much. I want to help with that. Because, my friend, getting help doesn't always necessarily mean going to someone else in person. There are some other ways to get support you may not even think about. Today, I'm going to give you three specific ways you can get help, and I'm going to share a bunch of examples of how I have gotten help in the past—or am getting help right now. As I do, I want you to consider where you might need some help in this season of your life. Today, even. Are you ready? Today I talked to Yael Schonbrun about her book Work, Parent, Thrive: 12 Science-Backed Strategies to Ditch Guilt, Manage Overwhelm, and Grow Connection (Shambala, 2022). The positive psychology movement and Buddhism have more than a little in common, as confirmed by Yael Schonbrun during this discussion of how to find synergy and richness in what might seem at times to be the utterly conflicting roles we play in life. Underlying this book's twelve strategies is ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) with its emphasis on being in the moment, practicing acceptance, and diffusing (or unhooking) from perspectives that might be holding us back. Today I talked to Yael Schonbrun about her book Work, Parent, Thrive: 12 Science-Backed Strategies to Ditch Guilt, Manage Overwhelm, and Grow Connection (Shambhala, 2022). It's July. And I just ordered a new planner for the rest of the year. This is really hard for me. I don't like leaving things unfinished. Having a half-used planner is definitely unfinished. Incomplete. It feels like failing. And I don't know if you ever feel that way, where you want to push through something just to check it off the list and say you got it done. Or to feel like you got your money's worth on a planner or other resource you bought. But I realized that I needed to make a change. Let me tell you why. When Yael Schonbrun headed back to work after having her first child she thought to herself ‘I've got this in the bag'. The reality couldn't have been any more different from the expectation, perhaps you can relate! Yael leveraged her experience as a parent, and an academic to firstly dive into the research, then begin to call out the myth of the work-life balance that was at the heart of so many available resources. She wrote ‘Work, Parent, Thrive' filled with insights and practical strategies to help us all reframe our approach to working and parenting with more optimism, less guilt, strategies to manage what's hard and a new lens to consider how what we've often considered as ‘competing roles' actually compliment and enrich each other.Yael Schonbrun is a clinical psychologist, assistant professor at Brown University, co-host of the Psychologists Off the Clock podcast, author of Work, Parent, Thrive: 12 Science-Backed Strategies to Ditch Guilt, Manage Overwhelm, and Grow Connection (When Everything Feels Like too Much), and parent of three.yaelschonbrun.comworkparentthrive.comLlink to Yael's newsletter https://thegrowtheq.ck.page/yaelThanks for listening to this episode of “Well, hello anxiety with Dr Jodi Richardson.”How you can help: If you enjoyed this episode, or gained some useful insight from it, please share it with a friend or family member. Imagine that one of your best friends is going through an incredibly difficult time. Maybe she even ends up in the hospital, and her children are all at home missing her like crazy, and she is struggling to be away from them, and her husband is trying to hold it all together. There are a lot of tests your friend has to go through. Some painful. She's scared. Her family is scared. You're scared. How do you respond? If you're on the more introverted side of the scale, chances are, you might recoil to the safety of your own home, wanting to help but unsure of how to do so. Or maybe you can't even imagine how you'd be able to walk into your friend's hospital room without losing it. And how is that going to make anything better? I was reading Holley Gerth's book, The Powerful Purpose of Introverts, and I came upon a passage that explains what happens when introverts find themselves in this situation. She shares that though introverts are often seen as distant, aloof, and apathetic, the opposite is usually true. She writes, "Many introverts actually care so much it overwhelms them." Is that you? Introvert or not, do you care so much that the pain of others is overwhelming? Do you cry when you see others crying? Does your heart break when you see the wounds in someone else's heart? Today, we are talking about how to recognize overwhelm and what we can do when we experience it. We hear so much about the negatives of being a working parent. The reality is that there are so many hours in a day, so it's difficult if not impossible to excel at work AND parenting. Some of us will view this dichotomy and tension as Work Family Conflict. But Dr. Yael Schonbrun is putting a positive spin on it, preferring to use the term Work Family Enrichment. But what does that mean? And how can a positive spin help us become better parents?Dr. Yael Schonbrun is the author of the book Work, Parent, Thrive: 12 Science-Backed Strategies to Ditch Guilt, Manage Overwhelm, and Grow Connection (When Everything Feels Like Too Much) and the co-host of the Psychologists Off the Clock Podcast. ------Sign up for the Parenting Translator Substack, and follow along on Instagram.Parenting Translator is hosted by Dr. Cara Goodwin and is produced by Earfluence.Dr. Cara Goodwin, PhD, is a child psychologist and mother to three children who "translates" research on parenting and child development into information that is accurate, relevant, and useful to parents.

I'm wondering if you are doing something that is really, really hard right now. Maybe you are raising little ones. Maybe you are caring for an aging parent. Maybe you have a friend who is in a season of grief. Maybe you are working extra hours to pay off debt. Maybe you are getting a degree or certification in your so-called free time. Maybe you are leading a small group or Bible study or ministry. There are times when I get so incredibly discouraged, and maybe you do, too, because you are striving to do a good job or doing your best to care for someone else or just trying to keep up with what life has thrown at you. And you're tired. And you're weary. And some days you just feel like giving up. And we begin to question, “Is God really asking me to do this? Where are all my open doors? Where is God making the path easy for me? Why does my burden feel so heavy? This doesn't feel easy or light.” And today, I want to speak a word of encouragement with you: Just because something is hard doesn't mean that it's wrong. Raise your hand if you are experiencing one of these situations: Child returning to college after a lengthy Christmas break Recently diagnosed with a disease or illness Caring for an aging parent or child with disabilities Transitioning from one job to another—within the same company or to a different one altogether Moving to a new home Retiring from a job Saying goodbye to a friend Starting a business Having another child Facing high pressure deadlines at work Appliances or vehicles breaking down or needing replaced Getting a promotion Volunteering for a leadership position at church Now, not all of those are necessarily negative situations, are they? Some can be quite good! But a change is a change, and stress is stress, and each one impacts our daily lives—our thoughts, emotions, energy level, and so on. I'm guessing that most of you can identify with at least one of those situations, if not two or three or even four. What are we supposed to do when facing so many things? How can we deal with these things in a healthy, God-honoring way? Recently, I shared two strategies with those on my email list and asked them what they did in these types of situations. And today, I've compiled them into six strategies for dealing with overwhelm, stress, and change. Plus, within each of those six strategies, I'm going to offer you some very practical ideas. Which ones do you think will work well for you? What have you tried before? What is something new you'd like to try? There are no two ways about it. Parenting is hard. Add a full-time job to the mix and the pressures of modern life and, wow! It's a miracle we can do it at all. How can we balance all of life's pressures, and be the best parents for our most precious beings, our children? And how can we do it and remain kind to ourselves? To answer these and many other related questions, I'm calling on one of my newest friends, Dr. Yael Schonbrun (https://yaelschonbrun.com/). Yael is a psychologist in private practice, an assistant professor of psychology at Brown University, and the host of a podcast on which I recently guested called Psychologists Off the Clock. She has also written a book I loved called Work, Parent, Thrive: 12 Science-Backed Strategies to Ditch Guilt, Manage Overwhelm, and Grow Connection. Wharton Professor and bestselling author Adam Grant said, “As a working parent, it will save you more time than it takes to read.” So, listen in as I converse with Yael, who shares how we can work, parent, and thrive! Hello everyone, I'm so glad you're joining today. I was on call this past weekend which means that I'm busy, and I see a lot of patients; this can, of course, be overwhelming. However, I was walking through my process the way I coach myself and observing what I did to keep myself grounded and not overcome by the overwhelm. The first step in decreasing our stress and suffering is accepting any given state. This is something I've noticed for myself because, of course, I manage my mind and truly love my life no matter what's going on, no matter how hard things might be. I enjoy my life in multiple moments every single day. That is not to say that I don't have bad days or I don't cry. There have been times when I cry a lot. And if I feel like I'm going through a hard time, I will ask myself what is going wrong? What can I fix? Because I tend to be a healer and fixer. That's why I went into medicine. That's why I went into life coaching. But recently, I was expressing my “overwhelm” in a group and asked how I deal... I said I allow myself to feel the feelings…ask myself what is going wrong, and come up with a plan/solution. I am a solution-oriented person, and one of my mentors has always taught me not to be a complainer but come up with solutions, so that is how I have learned to be wired. Not a bad thing. I'm good with it. But what comes along with this is the idea that something is wrong when I don't have it perfectly together 100% of the time. I recently had this realization. I, too, have to check myself in following my processes because I am not perfect. I think about my podcast on perfectionism, episode #24. And realize that I have to be reminded to give myself grace as well. I'm not perfect, nor will I ever be. And, of course, I acknowledge life is good and bad…so there will be challenging times. Hence, of course, there will be times when perhaps there are too many challenges at once, and I may feel more overwhelmed than usual. Because I have my tools for that of course, recently, with some major transitions going on in my life, including transitioning away from a nanny, sending my baby to daycare, and other things, I realized I was dealing perhaps with more than I have ever dealt with before. Juggling even more balls in the air than usual! I had to dig deep, do some deep personal work, and reflect on how I would handle this and not to let the sense of "overwhelm" overcome me so I could thrive, prevail, and continue to enjoy my life. Here is what I found… -When shit gets rough and hits the fan, know it is not permanent; this I know. But know that it may take me where I need to go. I can certainly reflect on times in my life when things were difficult, but the challenging times laid the groundwork for the next step. -Nothing has gone wrong. I am doing my best, and that's TOTALLY enough. -I don't have to tackle every single problem at once Problems and challenges come in various shapes, sizes, and packages and have varying degrees of complexity. Therefore some challenges we can face head-on very quickly and solve. For example, a messy house would hire a cleaner, which is extremely simple. Perhaps with some leg room in there to hire, but overall simple. However, there are larger problems in life, like challenging relationships or decisions to leave a toxic work environment, and the list goes on…that may require more mental energy. -In the case of the larger problem requiring more energy, we must cultivate patience. Trust yourself. This is something we work on inside my coaching program. Essentially, once you trust yourself, you know that the answer will come to you. Often, you simply need time and space. Then, you will figure out the solution. -Everything is figureoutable. Sometimes it just takes longer than you bargained for. -Hence, cultivating patience makes our life experience more enjoyable. And when you're completely exhausted, make sure you are very cautious, mindful/careful of giving your energy away to anyone who may need or want it…guard your energy. Refrain from activities that deplete it Refrain from people-pleasing Be very picky about what you do when you are going through this. For example, don't take on more than you have to during these times. When dealing with major transitions/decisions/stressors, our to-do list can be very daunting, so we don't want to add more. Don't do anything you don't want to do; don't hang out with anyone you don't want to hang out with. Be you unabashedly because it doesn't require any extra work. My process helps professional moms with the seemingly perfect life who are silently suffering on the inside to know that they're not alone and that they reclaim their confidence and power to have the life they want, even if that feels impossible right now. And please share this podcast with anyone you think would benefit or enjoy it.

My guest this week is Sara Treffert. In this episode, I thought that it would be fun to flip things around a little bit today, so this is going to be an interview of Dr. Nicole because so many of you write in with lots of questions about me, my life, the work that I do, and of course a lot of behavior related questions! So I've invited Sara Treffert, a fellow practitioner, but more importantly, she's on the team that produces this podcast to interview me about the things that you asked most about! We start with a peek into my background: growing up, family, kids, experiences that shaped my approach and how my clinic evolved into what it has. We talk about on demand resources and then we get into some top parenting questions: how to build trust with kids for parents and for teachers and caregivers, (especially as it's back to school time as this airs), my answer to “how to get my child to do/stop doing XYZ thing” and tips on how to manage overwhelm. It has always been my mission to use what I know as a parent and professional to support other parents, families, and professionals on this journey while also improving the outcome of our children… So, with that, let's dive in! And if you like this AMA (ask me anything) format, please let us know and we can do more of these in the future! Are you feeling overwhelmed? As coaches, we are usually running the coaching, sales, marketing, and every other aspect of our business. The amount of never-ending work can certainly feel overwhelming! While some people can motivate themselves through it, others can become paralyzed and not get any work done. When you feel overwhelmed it's important to stop guessing what the solution may be and start relying on a proven system that helps walk you out of it, one step at a time. In today's episode, I talk about overwhelm and ways to help deal with it. I clarify how overwhelm affects everyone differently. I discuss the symptoms of overwhelm and why it's important to have the self-awareness to identify when you're overwhelmed. I also explain why we need to have a system in place to take one step forward instead of relying on guesswork. "It's not something I've solved, but I think self-awareness is not necessarily about solving all of your problems. It's being aware of your problems and knowing that there is a path to solve them.” - Matthew Kimberley This week on Book Yourself Solid® Marketing For Coaches Podcast: Why I got called the “hemorrhoid guy” because of my own speech How overwhelm can affect people differently The role self-awareness plays in overcoming overwhelm How I get myself out of an overwhelming funk Symptoms of overwhelm The power of process Mentioned Resources: Book: Steal the Show, by Michael Port Get More Clients in 60 Days! What a pleasure to have Mel Mason on this podcast. To me, her message is important for many who are struggling to recover from bulimia. Her words speak volumes, and her story is compelling and also proves that even through adversity, you can move forward. In her Freedom From Clutter's 5 Day Challenge which started today, and which I am attending, I loved it when she said to see life (and I am paraphrasing) as a GPS. You don't use it to see where you were, you use it to know where you are now, and where you want to go. I loved that.Mel shares about her five books (to become 13), The Mel Mason Show, and also about some of the adventures (and I say "some", because she has had many in the past year in particular that I have followed on Social Media). Asked what inspires her to be so adventurous, she says "it's my birthright". She feels that clutter is what stops us from living out our lives. To this, she clarifies that when she speaks to "clutter" she speaks to the internal clutter that can show itself in different ways, including addiction, bulimia, along with hoarding.Mel offers her book Freedom From Clutter to listeners by going to https://www.declutteringspaces.com/freedomfromclutter, and you will also then automatically be added to her list to invite you to the 5 Day Challenge, or you can email Mel at info@declutteringspaces.com. If you would rather have an autographed copy, you can go to her website https://www.declutteringspaces.com.The link for the Conference Mel has organized which she spoke about with $13,000 worth of value for $47, visit www.daretothrive.netMore about Mel:Best-selling author Mel Mason is The Clutter Expert. As a sexual abuse survivor, she grew up depressed, suicidal, and surrounded by clutter. What she realized after coming back from the brink of despair and getting through her own chaos was that the outside is just a mirror of the inside. And if you only organize the outside without changing the inside, the clutter keeps coming back. That's why you can clear a surface or organize your closet and in no time, it's cluttered back up again. So, that set her on a mission to empower people around the world to get free from clutter and experience more happiness and more abundance in every area of their lives. Since then she's used her own experience to create a step-by-step process designed to help you get free from clutter without feeling overwhelmed, that keeps the clutter from coming back called “The Seven Steps to Manage Overwhelm and Organize ANY Space” and she has written a new book, Freedom From Clutter: The Guaranteed, Foolproof, Step-by-Step Process to ReFreedom From Clutter FREE DOWNLOADABLE COPY by Mel MasonNew Release Kindle or Signed Copy! A few episodes back I went into 3 Simple Things to Manage Overwhelm where I talked about some strategies I use to get past overwhelm by creating the space to get things done personally and professionally. In there I went into blocking time, eliminating distractions by putting your phone on airplane, and letting others know in your immediate environment what you need to have the type of environment you need for the task at hand. At the root this is cultivating undivided attention and funneling your focus and pretty much everything you've got into what requires it in the moment The amount of attention you can commit and hold by your mental and emotional focus can make all the difference in creating something with meaning and making memories with the people you love. As you're heading into the new year, you can use this practice to really dive into the things at the top of your list and start the year strong. In this episode you'll learn Some simple ways to communicate with your family what your need are How to hit the pause button and change gears Creating the space mentally and emotionally to give your full undivided attention to the task at hand Why being completely present is a gift to yourself and others A simple practice to begin giving your undivided attention on one thing today
There are countless ways to manage overwhelm, and I've found these three things consistently over time put everything else in place. Having a keen awareness when it hits Eliminating distraction and guarding your time Creating blocks of time for focused work A funny thing that happens when we are overwhelmed, especially when it's something that we don't necessarily want to deal with, is that we'll procrastinate. The number one way this shows up is increasing distractions. Try out these 3 simple things and let me know how it goes. In this episode you'll learn How to focus on what you can do and eliminate anything that will take you off course Why getting into deep focused work is so rewarding Ways we prevent ourselves from taking action What the message is behind overwhelm and anxiety How to guard your time and set your priorities Parkinson's Law - work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion - and how to effectively block time
