Can you imagine how hard it would be for a child to have the last name LOSER? Cory lived up to it. At the age of thirteen he ran as quickly as he could to a life of drugs. For the next twenty years he was using meth daily, in and out of jail, homeless, stole from his own parents, and ultimately landed in prison. Yet, somehow he found a way out, through faith and love. Today we dive into his incredible story of redemption from ditch to destiny. First, we had the pandemic, and then another pandemic, and it's flying under the radar screen. It's the pandemic of mental health issues and addiction. So many people were at home, day drinking and abusing their bodies. And now, we are starting to see that bubble up. Cory Losier, author of Born a Loser, knows that very well.

Dr Kim Hébert-Losier trained as a physiotherapist in Canada in 2006 and worked as a musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapist before undertaking research on clinical testing procedures and calf muscle function in New Zealand. Kim then undertook research in human movement science and sports performance in Sweden, USA and Malaysia before returning to New Zealand where she is now employed as a Senior Lecturer in Health, Sport and Human Performance. Kim is one of the founding members of the sport science team based at the University of Waikato Adams Centre for High Performance. With Kim's extensive background in physiotherapy, research and sports science, she offers valuable perspectives on the relationships between running technique, efficiency, and technology. We discuss the Volodalen score, a system that analyzes running technique by examining key aspects such as vertical oscillation, arm movement, pelvis position, stride length and foot strike patterns. We dive into the world of cadence and 'super shoes' as we discuss their impact on running economy and the pros and cons of using specialised footwear. Gain insight into how smartwatches can help monitor your cadence and how a properly adjusted step rate can benefit your joints without sacrificing efficiency. Lastly Kim also shared her thoughts on the potential of biomechanical analysis to predict running injuries and the crucial role of load management in injury prevention. The Nike Vaporfly and its descendants, the Next% and Alphafly, have revolutionized the running landscape. In recent years we have seen new world records set in the men's and women's 10k, half-marathon and marathon. Many other elite runners have set personal bests in the now-dubbed "super-shoes". We have multiple independent studies showing improvements in running economy of around 4% on average. With all the disruption, the IAAF has finally had to step in and update their regulations on running shoes. Now that these "super-shoes" are more widely available, the question on every runner's lips is "will they work for me?". Our guest today has been attempting to answer that question. Dr Hébert-Losier recently published a study in The Journal of Sport and Health Science in which she tested the Nike Vaporfly 4% on a group of recreational runners, like us! Kim Hébert-Losier is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Applied Biomechanics at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. She is also a Physiotherapist and an accomplished runner, having qualified for the Boston Marathon twice. She joins me on the show today to shed a little more light on what these "super-shoes" are, how they work and whether the Nike Vaporfly / Alphafly can really make you a faster runner. Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Glen Ford, along with my co-host Nellie Bailey. Coming up: What do the AIDS and Covid-19 epidemics have in common? Both diseases were much more deadly to Black Americans than to whites. We’ll discuss the racist reasons for these high Black death rates. And, After hundreds of years on American shores, Black people are still fighting for basic human rights. We’ll talk with a Black astrophysicist who says “we all have the right to know the universe.” But first – Chicago is arguably ahead of most heavily Black cities in two arenas of racial struggle: the fight for community control of police, and the long battle for reparations. Toussain Losier is a professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts, at Amherst. But he earned is PhD at the University of Chicago and has long experience as an activist in that city. Losier is author of a recent article, titled ““A Human Right to Reparations: Black People against Police Torture and the Roots of the 2015 Chicago Reparations Ordinance.” He’s well-acquainted with the young Black Chicago activists that told a United Nations agency in Geneva that the United States is guilty of genocide against Black people. Black people are today dying in disproportionate numbers from COvid-19, just as they succumbed to HIV-AIDS at greater rates than whites, two generations ago. Darius Bost is a professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Utah and a co-editor of “Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies.” Bost says white ignorance of actual conditions in Black communities led to mass deaths from AIDS. He’s written an article titled, ““Black Lesbian Feminist Intellectuals and the Struggle against HIV/AIDS.” Chanda Prescod-Weinstein grew up in working class East Los Angeles, but she’s now a Theoretical Physicist, as well as a Feminist Theorist, at the University of New Hampshire. Doctor Prescod-Weinstein firmly believes that everyone has “the right to know the universe.” We asked her if she agrees that a physicist is one who tries to find out how WHAT IS, came to BE.

In this episode, Monica and Page bring you the Lit Review LIVE from Hairpin Arts Center, the site of For the People Artists Collective's first city-wide exhibition, Do Not Resist? 100 Years of Chicago Police Violence. Monica and Page chatted with Simon Balto and Toussaint Losier, two radical authors and professors, about Simon's upcoming book, Occupied Territory: Policing Black Chicago from Red Summer to Black Power, coming out in the fall of 2018. In this history of Chicago from 1919 to Black Power in the 1960s and 1970s, Simon breaks down the racially repressive policing that occurred in Black neighborhoods as well as how Black citizen-activists challenged that repression.
Monica and Page sat down with Dan Berger via Skype and Toussaint Losier in Chicago to chat about their latest book, Rethinking the American Prison Movement, which provides a short and accessible overview of the transformational and ongoing struggles against America's prison system. From forced labor camps of the 19th century, to rebellious protests of the 1960's, to the rise of mass incarceration, this book is for anyone interested in the history of American prisons and the struggles for justice still echoing today.

How cool can kind be? And can compassion, community and caring be capitalized upon, not in a manipulative way but as a means of generating good with good? It seems like this should be a simple question to answer, but the more I really dive into it, the more fascinatingly complex it becomes to me. Can a for-profit business be built and thrive on kindness and compassion? Cindy Brett, a dynamic woman who has spearheaded a movement called "Kindnessology," is interested to find out. Cindy is a life success consultant who has studied about the mind and the creative process throughout her career. She has learned there are exact laws in place which, if implemented, create unrivaled serenity and harmony throughout our lives. Cindy feels that it is her purpose to more deeply understand how it is that we create our own lives and how we can inspire others to do the same. Cindy has studied with many great authors and teachers over the last dozen years, including Dr. Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Byron Katie, Carolyn Myss, Zig Ziglar, Mark Victor Hansen, Les Brown, Michael Losier, and Gary Zukav. She has been personally mentored and coached by Bob Proctor, Losier, and Paul Hutsey. Our common interest and attraction to Proctor became an interesting point for discussion. Among the many incredible things that stood out from my conversation with Cindy were: 1. The privilege of awareness - I had yet to hear anyone describe awareness in quite this way, using the word "privilege." It felt completely appropriate as soon as Cindy mentioned it. 2. Pain as an agent of change - I asked Cindy what precipitated her transformation and she quickly answered with one word: Pain. 3. Stay with it - Cindy noted that what we focus on expands and I was probably turning a little bit red when she talked about how common it is for people who like to learn and grow to flit about from book to book to book and course to course to course, gobbling up information and forever searching for what they perceive to be the missing piece of their puzzle. We did eventually steer back around to Kindnessology but I think you'll find this entire conversation completely enriching if you are in any way interested in mindset and manifestation. ©2017 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises
In the Personal Development space there's a lot of talk about The Law of Attraction, which basically means that if you focus hard on something the Universe will bring it to you. Now, there are a lot of people out there who are pretty woo-woo about that stuff and insist that it's a totally mystical force. I'm not qualified to give you a good answer on whether or not that's true. However, I was having a couple of beers with my old college roommate this weekend, who's a very smart and philosophical guy, and we got on this topic. We're in agreement that there IS something to the Law of Attraction, but it might not be quite what all the spiritual hippies think it is. Give it a listen and you'll see how I mix the rational with the woo and the rational wins out!
