De voorbij twaalf weken hebben we jou een idee gegeven van het belang van muziek bij film en computergames. Het is inderdaad bijna ondenkbaar geworden om geen muziek te spelen tijdens film. En toch bestaat het dat heden ten dage films worden gemaakt zonder begeleidende muziek. Kijk bijvoorbeeld maar naar de film Cloverfield. Gedurende de hele film is geen streepje muziek te horen. Men koos ervoor om de film met een handcamera te schieten, waardoor het lijkt alsof je zelf in de film zit. Dus de ervaring is al vrij revolutionair en het beeld zorgt zo al genoeg voor de nodige spanning, dat muziek het alleen maar té zou maken. In een vorige aflevering zeiden we al dat muziek aanvullend moet zijn. Het werkt versterkend, echter, stilte werkt evengoed zo. De spanning in de film is te snijden en toch is er geen muziek. Stilte kan dus ook muziek zijn. Met de film The Blair Witch Project heeft de regisseur iets gelijkaardigs op poten willen zetten. Uiteraard is de eindgeneriek wel verrijkt met een prachtig stukje muziek. We horen het deze avond niet omdat het ook een behoorlijk lang nummer is, maar we nodigen jullie uit eens te zoeken naar Cloverfield, gecomponeerd door Michael Giacchino. Uiteraard proberen we bij LaClassica wél muziek te brengen, want het beeld is er namelijk niet bij radio. Het eerste nummer is er eentje van de Star Wars saga. Deze keer niet van John Williams, maar van Peter Bernstein. Het verhaal is dan ook een losstaand verhaal over één van de personages/types uit de blockbuster Star Wars, namelijk de Ewoks. Kleine schattige beertjes, die samen met de rebellen vechten tegen de soldaten van het Keizerrijk. Een leuke film voor de kinderen, met mooie rustige muziek op de achtergrond. Er zit deze week weer veel variatie in de muziekkeuze, omdat we lang nog niet klaar zijn met onze introductie tot de filmmuziek. Het is de bedoeling om je met zoveel mogelijk stijlen te laten kennis maken. Laat de kinderen bijvoorbeeld maar eens luisteren naar het vierde lied. Vanaf het horen van de eerste tonen zullen ze ongetwijfeld weten over welke animatiefilm het gaat. Probeer het zeker maar eens uit en laat tevens je kinderen meegenieten van wat moois filmmuziek te brengen heeft. Kinderen hebben namelijk veel fantasie en de muziek brengt die fantasie tot een ander niveau. Ik merk het trouwens met mijn eigen kinderen. Ze vragen steevast om filmmuziek op te zetten en vaak bij het horen van iets nieuws is het net alsof ze een cadeautje krijgen. Tof om hen zo te zien ontdekken, want dat is het eigenlijk wel. Filmmuziek is een beetje jezelf tegenkomen in je eigen fantasiewereld en ervan genieten. Vaak krijgen we de vraag hoe je kan beginnen luisteren naar filmmuziek. Op zich is daar geen eenduidig antwoord op te geven. Het is vaak een combinatie van factoren die het zo mooi maakt. Het is niet omdat ik continue naar filmmuziek luister dat ik daarvoor altijd naar hetzelfde genre luister. Afhankelijk van de gemoedstoestand, stress, sfeer, wie meeluistert enzovoorts is het bepalend waar ik op dat moment zin heb om naar te luisteren. Filmmuziek heeft zo’n breed spectrum aan genres dat het intussen bijna onuitputtelijk is: van heel klassiek naar rock en roll, of zelfs house muziek. In welke stemming voel jij je nu?
