The Scoop
Why crypto domain names could evolve into the internet's first identity system

The Scoop

Unstoppable Domains allows users to register domain names via non-fungible tokens (NFTs) which can then be used to receive crypto payments, and as digital identity markers around Web3. In July, the company raised $65 million in a Series A, successfully clinching ‘unicorn' status at a $1 billion valuation. In this episode of The Scoop, Unstoppable Domains' Founder and CEO Matt Gould explains why NFT domain names are likely the future identity system for Web3, and how persistent digital identities will redefine the importance of online reputation.  As Gould explains, once people start using an NFT domain as part of their online identity, additional interactions with Web3 applications will link more information to that NFT domain name, and a digital identity begins to emerge:  “We think this is a big deal because there really isn't an identity system for the Internet yet, and a lot of people in the space think this is probably one of the big unlocks for crypto and blockchain over the next several years.” If this new NFT-based identity system develops the way Gould anticipates, then it will also be significantly harder for people to create fake reputations on Web3 platforms. Given bots and scammers are notorious problems on existing Web2 platforms, Gould thinks the implications could fundamentally change how we view online interactions: “Reputation that comes from having persistent digital identities is another huge benefit — not only owning your data, but being able to create your reputation will make online interactions hopefully more pleasant.” Episode 88 of Season 4 of The Scoop was recorded live withhe Block's Frank Chaparro and Unstoppable Domains Founder and CEO Matt Gould. Powerhouse theatre-writing duo Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews join us to talk about their moving and personal musical, Witness Uganda (previously known as Invisible Thread when it premiered Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre). Inspired by couple's separate real-life experiences traveling to Africa—specifically Griffin's trip to Uganda—the story follows the character Griffin as he meets and tries to help five Ugandan teens, first by teaching them himself and then by sponsoring their education when he returns to New York. But is this the kind of help they want or need?  The musical asks many questions about altruism, public health, voluntourism, and the ethics of foreign aid. What does it look like to offer aid, particularly from the United States to a developing nation? Experts Afam Onyema of the GEANCO Foundation—which is simultaneously based in the U.S. and Nigeria (where it serves local Afridans)—and Ana Jimenez-Bautista, the director of Field Practice at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, join us for this fascinating conversation about what it really means to help and how we can offer assistance in the most useful ways. Can U.S. exports sustain 2% milk production growth?

The Milk Check

Will the U.S. dairy market grow fast enough over the next five years to sustain 2% milk production?  The Milk Check crew welcomes back directors Don Street and Diego Carvallo and Jacob Menge, our futures & options trader, to take on the million-dollar question. The crew dives in deep on a vital point of growth for the industry — U.S. exports and their ability to keep up with foreign markets. The conversation jumpstarts with a discussion on the impact of Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) and its effect on buyers foreign and domestic.  Anna: Welcome to The Milk Check, a podcast from T.C. Jacoby & Co., where we share market insights and analysis with dairy farmers in mind. T3: Hi. This is Ted Jacoby. I'm joined as usual by my father and Anna Donze. Today, we're also joined by Don Street and Diego Carvallo from our milk powder team, who handle the majority of the exports for T.C. Jacoby & Co., as well as Jacob Menge from our risk management team. We start by asking a question. Will U.S. dairy exports be able to grow fast enough over the next five years to sustain a two percent milk production increase? T3: Because if we continue to grow milk production at a two percent clip, we're going to have to continue to grow dairy exports at a record clip. Now, the truth is we never end up answering the question specifically, but we go off on a tangent that ends up in a very interesting place. T3: As usual, this podcast is about food for thought. This is a question of whether or not the dairy industry in the United States is set up properly, structurally to encourage exports. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Thanks. T3: I was reading that Matt Gould's Dairy Market Analyst over the weekend. And he mentions at the beginning of his write-up that the price of cheese is weak. One of the factors that is contributing to weak cheese prices is weak exports. Then later on in the letter, he mentions that June exports as a percentage of milk solids is 8.1%. T3: I did some research, and in April and May, it was 8.9%. The Q2 average as a percentage of total milk production, we exported 18.6% of our milk solid, which I believe is a quarterly record for the largest percentage of milk solids we've ever exported. It just occurs to me that there's a real disconnect right now between what we're hearing in a lot of places that we need to export more in order to get prices up, and at the same time, we're exporting more milk solids than we ever have. T3: It would lead to a really good discussion about what's really the issue here. If we're going to continue to have 2% milk production growth, and milk production growth continues to look strong. It means we're going to have to export a larger and larger percentage of the milk solids that we're creating in this country. T3: The question is the export market capable of handling and taking on that additional volume? I think even more importantly, is it capable of handling that additional volume at decent milk prices? Because it's one thing to say, "Hey, we're going to export a ton of milk powder, and we're going to do it at a dollar a pound." T3: It's another thing to do it at a price like a dollar 28-29, like we are today, or even a dollar 50. I don't think most dairy farmers are really interested in massive increases in export volume, if we're doing it at super low milk prices because that really doesn't add to the profitability. We've invited Don Street, who's the Head of our powder group who handles the majority of the exports for our company, as well as Diego Carvallo. T3: Then also joining us today is Jacob Menge, who manages the risk management for the company and usually has some great insights on markets. As well as the usual suspects, myself, my dad, and Anna Donze. Well, why don't we start there? Do you think CWT, Don, is inhibiting us from growing our dairy exports? Don: I don't think it helps because it limits who can sell.

Nicolette Robinson is an award winning actress and was most recently cast as Jenna , the lead in the Broadway musical, "Waitress."  Born and raised in Los Angeles and married to the Hamilton Tony Award winning actor Leslie Odom Jr. , Nicolette opens up about her struggles and triumphs and takes us on an emotional journey that gives listeners an honest and beautiful account of what is is to live the life of an artist. This fall, Robinson made her Broadway debut stepping into the lead role of “Jenna” in the multiple Tony Award nominated musical, WAITRESS. With a book by Jessie Nelson, music by Sara Bareilles, and direction by Diane Paulus, the show has played to full audiences over almost 1,000 performances. On September 4, 2018, Robinson became the first African-American woman and the first mother to play the lead role. Robinson appeared Off-Broadway in the 2015 production of BROOKLYNITE at the Vineyard Theatre, directed by Michael Mayer from a book he co-wrote with Peter Lerman, which earned a 2015 Off Broadway Alliance Award nomination for Best New Musical. She also starred in the new musical, INVISIBLE THREAD, for director Diane Paulus and Second Stage Theatre. Of her performance, Time Out New York wrote that Robinson was “poised and possessed of an ethereal soprano… marvelous.” INVISIBLE THREAD began its life as WITNESS UGANDA – in which Robinson also starred – with book, music, and lyrics by Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews. It was based on the true story of Matthews' humanitarian trips to Uganda, and his work to fund his nonprofit, Uganda Project. The musical premiered in February 2014 at Cambridge's American Repertory Theater before transferring to Off-Broadway. Robinson also co-starred in Barrington Stage Company’s A LITTLE MORE ALIVE, with book, music, and lyrics by Nick Blaemire. In this heartfelt and original folk-pop musical, two estranged brothers reunite at their childhood home after their mother’s funeral. An unexpected revelation distorts their memories and uncovers secrets. Robinson starred as ‘Lizzie’, the hospice worker who’d been caring for the mother, and the Berkshire Eagle called her “luminous.” On television, Robinson co-starred with Ruth Wilson and Dominic West as ‘Jane’ on Showtime’s Golden Globe Award-winning drama series, THE AFFAIR. She has also appeared on HART OF DIXIE, UNFORGETTABLE, PERFECT COUPLES, and COLD CASE, among others.
