Welcome to another conversation from the high/low art divide between opera-singer-turned-experimental-performer Ema Katrovas and comedian-and-TV-writer-turned-novelist Nicholas Anthony.  This episode is the second half of a two-part series recorded in New York City - this time, fresh off of our experience of Sleep No More at the the McKittrick Hotel, an immersive theatre experience created by the British theatre company Punchdrunk. So what is Sleep No More? Is it a theatrical experience based on Shakespeare's MacBeth, Alfred Hitchcock's film noir Rebecca, and a real witch trial that took place in 1697 in Scotland, which is how it's advertised? Or is it an aesthetic haunted house? Or is it just an elaborate method of selling cocktails? Let's find out... Sleep No More website: https://mckittrickhotel.com/events/sleep-no-more/ Music: The bar did not end up getting back to me about who was playing live music that night. If I ever find out, will credit the musician/singer here. (If you or someone you know played Scallywags Irish Pub on 9th Ave Between 38th and 39th street late on January 10th, please let me know!) As background for my description of the experience, I used a recording someone uploaded to YouTube after smuggling a recording device into Sleep No More (!) - given that it's been up for a while, it seems the creators don't mind much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYg0thPEPVw&t=2602s Peggy Lee's rendition of "Is That All There Is?": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sWTnsemkIs Links:

We head west and travel along the High Line to visit new institutions who are reinventing what performance looks like in the 21st century. We stop by The Shed in Hudson Yards to meet with Dupe Ajayi, Senior Strategist in charge of Intersectional Marketing & Partnerships. Dupe shares more about her role, what it means to be a New York institution, and how recent cultural movements are challenging the performing arts industry to be more accessible and welcoming to intersectional audiences.  As we learn more about how performance can be reinterpreted, the lines between stage and audience continue to blur. Tucked away between art galleries in Chelsea is the pseudo-hotel theatrical venue under the name The Mckittrick, better known for its immersive show Sleep No More. The interactive production fosters a new experience for audiences and artists alike, leaving audiences puzzled and questioning the notion of what a "stage" is. As we continue to break the traditions that separate art forms and audiences, we recognize how this dynamic might present itself beyond the theatre... in real life settings like restaurants, parties and dance floors.

Dylan is someone who "loves work, and the work I do in all fields, but I want to be defined by the creative and curious energy I put into the world". He has lived in 22 different households. Holds a BFA in performance acting from Ryerson University and a certificate in Stage Combat from the Academy of Dramatic Combat. He has spent the last few years dividing his time between that and the creative side of hospitality (which is honestly super creative) while focusing his continued artistic study on fight direction and education.Show NotesMentionshttps://www.canadianplayoutlet.com/products/two-plays-butlers-marsh-tempting-providence-by-robert-chafe (Tempting Providence) by Robert Chafe and the play was directed by https://nac-cna.ca/en/bio/jillian-keiley ( Jillian Keiley)Movie: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2883512/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 (Chef) by Jon Faverauhttps://mckittrickhotel.com/sleep-no-more/ (Sleep No More at the McKittrick Hotel) in New York CityDylan's SocialsInsatgram: @old.pal.dylIMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6039449/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6039449/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1)Demo reels:https://vimeo.com/209908851 (https://vimeo.com/209908851)https://vimeo.com/281062580 (https://vimeo.com/281062580)Cocktail videos:https://youtu.be/whm_O-mgtI4 (https://youtu.be/whm_O-mgtI4)https://youtu.be/4CheTxVu2ks (https://youtu.be/4CheTxVu2ks)https://youtu.be/5RPimBVEd3o (https://youtu.be/5RPimBVEd3o)https://youtu.be/_QjYezu86ac (https://youtu.be/_QjYezu86ac)https://youtu.be/0mmpGRWJmw8 (https://youtu.be/0mmpGRWJmw8)

On today's THE FOOD SEEN, we're invited into the world of The Heath, the restaurant within The McKittrick Hotel, home of production company Punchdrunk's “Sleep No More”, an avant-garde interactive play. To pair with such a performance, Chef R.L. King immerses himself in the scene; hazily lit, with jazz in the air, reminiscent of the dining room from The Shining, but instead of Lloyd (the bartender), there are elegantly dressed hosts elegantly dressed in white, there to serve you with glimmering prosperity, like a flashback to the Roaring Twenties. The food is more pubby, with British influnece seen in meat pies and an extensive pickle program. R.L.'s Low Country roots find their way in too, as a benne seed crust a cod. We're also joined by Cesar Hawas, Special Envoy of The McKittrick Hotel, who helps let this fantasy shine. Just know, a clause on the menu reads that “intense physiological interactions” may occur, so bring your appetite for intrigue. This program was sponsored by Fairway Market. “I had to leave the ego behind -..it was a challenge in the beginning but ultimately the most freeing thing in the world.” [07:00] R.L.
