Tonight's reading comes from The Meccas of the World. Written by Anne Warwick and published in 1913, this story explores the life and cultures of five major world cities, as it was in the early 20th century. My name is Teddy and I aim to help people everywhere get a good night's rest. Sleep is so important and my mission is to help you get the rest you need. The podcast is designed to play in the background while you slowly fall asleep. For those new to the podcast, it started from my own struggles with sleep. I wanted to create a resource for others facing similar challenges, and I'm so grateful for the amazing community we've built together.
As promised, the KOKO Crew took on the Hong Kong Sevens and some may say we lost, but we maintain the dragon is slain. Thanks to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Cathay Pacific and Ovolo Hotels for giving the show an experience of a lifetime, we went to the Sha Tin Racecourse, saw the city lights on a Aqua Luna Junk Boat, enjoyed some delicious food at the Stanley Street Dai Pai Dong, took in the views from The Peak and drank in all the red hot rugby action from the 10s and the 7s. With the Hong Kong Sevens being one of rugby's Meccas we were inundated with hall-of-fame guests including Dan Carter, Victor Matfield, Schalk Burger and Duane Vermeulen. Plus, we also jagged a few current superstars Maddi Levi, Charlotte Caslick and Michael Hooper throughout the course of the weekend for a chat. This show is cover to cover action, laughs and a smattering of debauchery, as the lads tackled the Vertical City. To cap off the show we have delivered a second instalment of ‘KOKO Carnage' that will leave our Melbourne adventure in its wake. So please sit back, relax and pour yourself a stiff drink, as this will leave your nerve endings fried. The Warriors return to The Basketball Mecca tonight in Madison Square Garden. Bonta Hill and FP Santangelo talk about what their own sports Meccas are.
Black Meccas are cities where it appears that Black people are thriving more compared to other places in the US. However, the housing values of Black residents living in these areas are substantially lower compared to their white counterparts, which reveals the presence of wealth inequality even in cities where Black people are supposed to experience a better economic well-being. In this episode Dr. Maretta McDonald discusses the recent paper she co-authored titled, “Wealth Matters: Home Ownership, Housing Values, and the Model Minority Myth of Black Meccas in the New South.” Maretta McDonald is a 2022-2024 IRP National Poverty Fellow and an Affiliate Faculty of Sociology at Virginia Tech. Her teaching and research focus on racial inequality, criminology, family, gender, and public policy.
CRAIC AGUS CEOL is an Irish expression meaning live music and having fun. I hope this tribute to Irish music brings you the excitement and good times that live Irish music brings about. Ireland is a medium-sized island of over 7 million people. Despite that, its worldwide cultural influence in literature and music has outweighed its size. Like islands such as Cuba, Jamaica and Great Britain, its musical contribution has been extraordinary. These four islands are important musical Meccas. Mestizo Sounds has already made programmes on the music of Cuba, Jamaica's paramount record label Studio One or about the Mods youth musical movement in Great Britain. Now, this show wants to present some of the Irish great talents. You will listen to traditional and modern music and a blend of both. Craic Agus Cell is in the memory of Shane McGowan and Sinead O'Connor. Haters have said, “There's no way you could compare the Saints roster to a charcuterie board…” Well, we did just that in this bonus episode of the 28 to 3 Podcast (inspired by the listener-submitted, maybe intended as a joke, topic from our friend in the UK, Daniel aka @Procrastinatus). As Saints fans, we are blessed to root for a team based in one of the world's culinary Meccas. So, if you don't think you're ready for *spot on* comparisons of players on our Saints roster to cheeses and meats often appearing on a restaurant's charcuterie board, then by all means, do not listen to this episode. BUT, if you're ready to have your mind blown and have some fun with us in what may be one of our best episodes yet, then jump in and tell all the haters what they missed! The comparisons are endless and there's even a few unexpected curveballs thrown along the way. We can all but guarantee that this episode took this podcast where no other Saints podcast has gone before. Listen in, buckle up, and prepare to get both your Saints fan-hood and culinary juices flowing, as this episode offers a deliciously fun ride!
Marley Blonsky made a massive life change last year. She moved from Seattle to one of the new bike Meccas, Bentonville, Arkansas. A built-in bike community in an up-and-coming location making waves throughout the bike world seemed like the right fit.Once she arrived, Blonsky wasn't content to simply start living the bike bum lifestyle (which, frankly, I would have!). Instead, she got to work leaving her mark once again on the bike industry. Her new podcast, All Bodies on Bikes, pairs Marley with her co-host Maggie to explore all-body-inclusion and how it affects the industry at large. From the All Bodies on Bikes podcast page: “We will explore themes such as party pace and why Marley hates it, the limitations of equipment, finding clothing and cycling tools, group ride dynamics as a larger-bodied person, the impact that ‘All Bodies On Bikes' has had and can have on the cycling industry as a whole.”She's also working on creating her own clothing company to accommodate big bodies. It's a sore spot for most riders who don't fit the skinny-cyclist mold, and Blonsky intends to do something about it.Marley Blonsky joins host Dan Cavallari to give an update on her move to a new part of the country, her work in and out of the industry, and what the future holds for her big projects. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
I find it interesting the way words change meaning and morph over time. For example, at one time when we used the word text to tell of our Sunday morning gospel, we could count on the fact that people would interpret it as a passage from one of the gospels. However, the meaning of the word text has changed remarkably with the invention of iPhones and droids and the myriad of communication devices we now have available for our use. In fact, the word text has morphed from a noun to a verb as we talk about texting our friends and family members. Another word that has morphed in meaning over decades is the word consumption. For most of us, consumption refers to consuming food and “stuff.” This word comes from Latin and means “using up” or “wasting.” In fact, at one point in time it became a word used to describe the horrible disease known as tuberculosis, a disease that had no cure, devoured the body and was usually fatal. However, over the past century, the word consumption has morphed and is now a universal term that describes what we purchase and our patterns of purchasing. I thought about this morphing of the word consumption as I studied today's gospel passage. Jesus had just miraculously fed a crowd of thousands. Last week we heard that Jesus had blessed a scarce commodity of five loaves and two fish and then, miraculously, there was an abundance of food. In fact, after the people had consumed as much as their bellies could hold, they were amazed to find food leftover. And, that experience made them even more curious and inquisitive about this Jesus. So, with today's gospel passage, things start to get more interesting. When the crowd meets Jesus the next day, they want to understand what happened. In response, Jesus does not answer their questions, but makes a statement that questions their motives for seeking him. He is looking at their deeper needs, not just the need to consume food. Perplexed by what has happened, the people simply do not get it. I can almost hear them saying in amazement, “Do it again Jesus, do it again!” Yet, Jesus provides different answers and they become more puzzled. The crowd comes asking about sustenance - about bread - and Jesus answers them with words not about bread that fills their bellies, but words that indicate he is talking about something much more than physical sustenance. In him, there is richness and food that endures and does not get used up! As I studied this reading, I found myself asking if we can really relate to this story because, for most of us, the reality is that we are not going hungry. Or are we? Is it our hunger, a hunger deep within us that lies behind our insatiable need to consume more and more stuff? Is our addiction to consuming symptomatic of a much deeper problem? And, does the fact that most of us live a life of comfort insulate us from our deeper needs? In fact, has our level of economic comfort protected us from feeling vulnerable, even making us less dependent on God? We have become people who are trained to be consumers and our economic system is dependent upon our consuming. We are so deeply entrenched in consumption that the mall, Meijer, and Amazon have become the Meccas in our culture. Buying stuff, whether it is food, shoes, clothing, or cars, has become a kind of nourishment for us. It is as though our purchases become a part of us, as if the stuff we buy will give us energy and strength. Consequently, we live with the illusion that life is nourished through purchasing things, stuff. But, after the newness wears off, the stuff we purchase always leaves us wanting more. Could it just be that the wasting disease of consumption has become an economic and, quite possibly, a spiritual disease within our culture? Could it be we live with the illusion that free competition and a malignant form of capitalism feeds others? It is an illusion because the fact is that self-interested consumption does not bring justice to those who are hungry and those who go without. And, could it possibly be that the waste produced by our insatiable need to consume is not only toxic, but is also consuming us? Just think about what plastic has done to our oceans and the precious forms of life that exist in those waters. Just think about our addiction to fossil fuels and what that addiction is doing to our climate as it threatens the very existence of life on this planet. Is the consumption that is so present in our culture and in our lives devouring us? If our answer to these questions is, “Yes,” then where do we find the cure? Where do we find the antibiotic for this deadly disease? Jesus said to the crowd, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” Jesus invites us to live into an alternative way of being. As we gather around this communion table each Sunday to eat and drink, we are nourished with the very life of God's son. Though the portions are small, we are nourished with abundance, an abundance of grace and love. And, we are nourished, not by something we consume, but by one who welcomes us with open arms, by one with whom we commune. Catholic theologian, William T. Cavanaugh, suggests: The Eucharist tells another story about hunger and consumption. It does not begin with scarcity, but with the one who came that we might have life, and have it abundantly…..The insatiability of human desire is absorbed by the abundance of God's grace in the gift of the body and blood of Christ…{And,} the consumer of the body and blood of Christ does not remain detached from what he or she consumes, but becomes part of the body. (Being Consumed: Economics and Christian Desire, p. 94-95). In Jesus, we become part of the body of Christ and the act of consumption is turned inside out. We who are consumers become consumed by the love and grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and we are changed. Nourished by the body and blood of Christ, we are enabled to live that communion of grace everyday of our lives as we enter into the communities where we work, serve and play. Now, I must say this way of life and being is not always easy. When we live life as members of the body of Christ we take the way of the Cross, a way that means a dying to self, and living for others. And, that way means that the pain of the hungry person, the pain of the world, and even the pain of a broken creation, are all the pain of Christ and therefore, that pain becomes our pain. But, we are fed by the one who not only went to the cross, but went through the cross to resurrection, bringing life and love to this very broken world. And, when we live this communion as one body in Christ, the love of God empowers us to do things like: feed the hungry, care for the sick, care for creation, and yes, care for and love our neighbors as ourselves so much that we do things like wear masks and get vaccinated because we can then protect others. This love of God also empowers us to work for justice and peace, and the very healing of all creation in this hurting, broken world. Consumption kills and it is deadly, but communion is life giving. In the person of Jesus Christ, God has invaded not only our lives but the life of world. Jesus is the bread of life. And, when the body and blood of Christ is working in us and through us as we daily live compassion and love, God is transforming the world. So, come, be served. Jesus is the host and has spread a table before us. Eat and live into the abundance of God.

he state of New Jersey is situated perfectly between two musical Meccas. The soul brotherhood of Philadelphia and the Big Apple. Musicians who were lucky enough to grow up in this state were privy to the sounds of Dionne Warwick, Sigma Sound Studios and the vibrant African Jazz foothold that was beginning to take root in New York. My guest today took in this music and immediately began to cultivate his own sound. This individualistic streak was the catalyst for his Band The Wizards and Oz which evolved as a live playing band hitting the each coast college circuit. My guest honed his chops on Stage and became comfortable as a singer and a multi-instrumentalist. After high school he found his way to Ithaca is gorges @ Cornell University where he formed another college circuit band called Oz and Ends. Utica, Rochester, Syracuse, Providence, Burlington you name it the Oz was there. Somehow he found time to complete his studies and graduate but not before he formed a new band called Glory River which was eventually signed to Jimi Hendrix' electric lady land label. After experiencing the regional music scene of upstate, NY he headed west to California where he wound up working with two of the best vocalists in modern music - Van Morrison and Jesse Colin Young. Stints with Peter Rowan and Gene Clark was followed by a collaboration with Robert Hunter and Comfort. It was @ this time that he caught the attention of John Kahn and Jerry Garcia who saw his electric keyboard wizardry as a new and fresh sound compared to the half dead acoustic player that Keith Godchaeux had become. My guest was part of the JGB quartet from late '79-1980. While it may not be the longest tenure of any keyboardist the power of the group and Jerry's adherence to some sobriety lent itself to some remarkable live performances that have been released commercially. Just in the last month March 1st 1980 in Passaic was sent into the digital processor for the masses to enjoy. My guest has always tried to play across the musical spectrum. Be it reggae, jazz, new age, movie soundtracks or tv shows and his continued growth spawned a commercial DVD entitled keyboards made simple....living on the edge Ozzie Ahlers welcome to the JFS. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Lisa Mills is a soul/blues singer who belts out her music in a raw, melodic and soulfully-honest way with blues, gospel and soul influences. Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, she now lives in Alabama. We first talked with Lisa back with her I’m Changing album in 2014. Her latest project, you might call a soul/blues tour de force – The Triangle. With the guidance of producer Fred Mollin, the idea was to travel, in one week’s time, to three different musical hotbeds – Memphis, Tennessee; Jackson, Mississippi; and Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and record there. But, they took this idea a step further – only recording songs that were originally recorded in each of those cities. The result is easily the finest, most passionate set of songs Lisa has ever put together. We chat with Lisa from her temporary home in Germany about picking all the great soul covers on the album, plus how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the album’s promotion.

There are many design and leadership podcasts. Signal337 is different. How? For starters, Tim McKenna is not a monolithic name in the design world, just a guy with over 14 years of experience working as a designer in a myriad of industries. Also, Signal337 is broadcasting from a small slice of America...Carlisle, Pennsylvania. A tiny, historic town far from the industry Meccas that are NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, and others. This unique perspective on design, business, and leadership happening in under-represented areas have voices just as important as the next talking head from major cities. This episode is all about me...Tim...and what I hope to do with this podcast. Learn a little bit about my background and my history, how I got into design, and where I hope to take the discussion and conversation for future episodes.

What do you know about Islam? Maybe that the word Islam comes the Arabic root "Salema": peace, purity, submission and obedience. Maybe you know that it's The fastest growing religion in the world, the center of study for millions in the United States, and a trending topic on Social Media everywhere. In today’s edition of the Hauger History podcast, we separate hype and fiction, and discuss some of the origins of Islam for MIddle School Students. Thanks for joining us on this 6th grade edition of Hauger HIstory Podcast with Mr. Hauger, I am the second part. Today we discuss the origins and spread of Islam. Thanks for listening, you can find the Hauger History Podcast on YouTube at the Danny Hauger Channel, at Haugerhistory.podbean.com, on itunes, or on Twitter @HaugerHistory. (www.dannyhauger.com) Islam began on the Arabian Peninsula and spread outward. Islamic traders from the Arabian Peninsula who traveled to Persian, Egypt, Spain, and elsewhere brought their religion with them. Islam spread through trade, war, and peace. Today, more than a billion people around the world practice Islam, and the Middle East, which includes the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the most important regions in the world. In this unit, you will take a closer look at this region. The prophet Muhammad was born sometime around 570 C.E. (For a Christian reference point, this was about 540 years or so after the time of Jesus. Muhammad taught of a faith called Islam. The word Islam comes the Arabic root "Salema": peace, purity, submission and obedience. Followers of Islam are called Muslim. Muslim is an Arabic word that means one who submits to Allah. Allah is told to be the same God worshipped by the JEws and Christians, who are often referred to as people of the book. Islam shares many of the Old Testament and Christian prophets. Muhammad teaches that he is the seal of the prophets, who is the final messenger with a direct line of communication to teach the will of God. Muhammad’s birthplace, Mecca, was an ancient place of worship and is sacred ground for Muslims. There are also many relevant locations to Abraham and other Old Testament prophets, building on the history of the people of the book and making reference to it. Abraham built a house of worship at the site, called the Ka’bah. Over time, people settled near it. By the time of Muhammad’s birth, this settlement, now known as Meccas, was a prosperous city at the crossroads of great trade routes. Muhammad had a difficult time growing up, losing his father, and was sent to live with a family of nomads in the desert. He learned the skills of being a merchant from his family and became a skilled trader, and communicator who won the respect of colleagues and people around him. He married an influential woman at 25 and had several children. Between 610 and 611 CE, Muhammad had a vision within a cave in the Mountains and was visited by the Angel Gabriel. He was told he was a messenger of God. His teachings were recorded by his followers in the Qur’an, as Muhammad could neither read nor write. Not everyone accepted him readily as a prophet, and he was met with significant resistance. The ideals of charity, peace, and generosity won many people over as Muhammad continued to travel and teach people of his faith. Muhammad led an army to eventually remove all previous idols of worship in Mecca, and did so without battle, after finding loyalty from other clans and tribes who were appreciative of his message. After Muhammad’s death shortly after, there was disagreement over who should continue to lead the faith, Abu Bakr, the chosen Caliph, or Muslim Ruler, Bakr used military force and converted much of the Arabian Peninsula. Caliph Umar continued to expand territory of Muslim influence after Bakr’s death. Most Muslims, called Sunnis, supported the line of the Caliphate, as leaders of Islam. A split came when Shi’ah Muslims, believed that true leadership could only come from Muhammad’s bloodline through his daughter Fatima, should be acknowledged as the true leaders of the faith. Many people came to worship and make pilgrimage to the Ka’bah. This still occurs today, as one of the five pillars of Muslim faith, to make at least one trip to Mecca in your life, if you are able. After Muhammad’s call to faith and diligent work, which was challenged by many at the time, the Ka’bah became a center of Islamic worship as the faith spread throughout the Arabian Peninsula and beyond. The Qur'an is the holy book of Islam. Its pages record Muhammad's teachings. Eric Von Seggern/Shutterstock Importance to modern day: In the religious sense, Islam means submission to the will of God and obedience to His law. A Pew Research poll in 2015 are predicting a jump from 1.6 to 2.7 billion Muslims by the year 2050 if current trends continue (Becoming nearly 31% of the world’s population).
