Krutika Kuppalli, a physician researcher who studies emerging infectious diseases, joined the World Health Organization in 2021, where she worked to combat the COVID-19 on a global level.She had previously been targeted by threats and harassment as a result of media and US congressional appearances to inform the public about the emerging pathogen. These were often focused on her race and gender. Concerned for her safety, Kuppalli went to the police twice. She was told to get a weapon.She tells Adam Levy how employers can support colleagues who face harassment, and the measures she took to protect herself.Kuppalli is joined by Atom Lesiak, a transgender non-binary genome sciences researcher based in Houston, Texas. Lesiak now runs Atomic Brains, a science tutoring and coaching organisation.Being open about their gender as a PhD student and beyond brought profound challenges. Research Focus and Achievements Grace's Master's research involved tagging and tracking tiger sharks, lemon sharks, nurse sharks, and Caribbean reef sharks in Buck Island Reef National Monument in St. Croix. Her findings revealed that these species spent over 50% of their tagged days within the marine protected area, underscoring its importance for shark conservation. For her PhD, Grace shifted her focus to great hammerhead sharks in the Florida Keys, where she investigated their movement patterns and interactions with the recreational tarpon fishery. Her research uncovered that approximately 15% of hooked tarpon were consumed by hammerheads, raising concerns about the impact of shark predation on the tarpon population. In addition to her shark research, Grace has also worked on critically endangered sawfish, conducting juvenile nursery area habitat assessments in Everglades National Park. In this episode, we discuss one of Dr. Boyko's recent studies with Embark where he looks at a genetic mutation relating to hearing loss in Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Previous research had established a link between Rhodesian Ridgebacks and early onset adult deafness. Dr. Fusi studies everything relating to canine (and feline) reproduction, including intensive care for neonates, artificial insemination, neonatal health, and much more. In this episode, we dive into her research looking at stress hormones & newborn puppies. Dr. Fusi uses a non-invasive method to measure hormone levels in puppies, which involves taking samples of their nails at regular intervals. We know that the conditions a human experiences in utero can have an effect on their entire life; Dr. Fusi is researching what different hormone levels (for example, cortisol) can do for a puppy's neonatal health as well as for their entire life experience. Contrary to what you might think, it's actually important for puppies to have a certain amount of cortisol to get them to take their first breaths (though too much cortisol is detrimental, so you need a balance!).
