Historical fiction is a popular genre among many, but today's guest learned a lot about her reading life when she realized this genre wasn't for her! Today Anne is talking with Laura Howard, an Atlanta-area faculty developer and part-time university professor. She's always seen reading as both a personal joy and a form of connection, whether with the fellow members of her longstanding book club or with other friends and neighbors. When Laura realized she wasn't a fan of historical fiction, she was also able to pinpoint why: she'd prefer to learn about the actual history of events before reading fiction inspired by real life. She also has a specific list of topics she'd love to explore via engrossing nonfiction books. A high priority is keeping those books on the shorter side. Laura has tried to research on her own to find titles that meet her needs, but she's found the options online to be totally overwhelming. That brings her here today: Anne and Laura dive in to identify great nonfiction about history. Please share your ideas for Laura by leaving a comment on our show notes page at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/504, where you'll also find the list of titles discussed today. This week on Wise_N_Nerdy, Charles and Joe kick off the show with a popcorn-powered Question of the Week: “What is the best popcorn?” From classic buttery goodness to sweet caramel crunch and even the fancy gourmet blends, the hosts and listeners pop off (pun intended) on what makes the perfect snack. With the dice rolled and destiny set, the first segment lands on “What Are You Nerding Out About?” — where Charles talks about Too Many Losing Heroines, a cozy and feel-good anime he loves to throw on in the background. He also admits he's bursting at the seams wanting to talk about the new Demon Slayer movie — if only Joe would finally watch it! Meanwhile, Joe's been fully immersed in the world of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, so much so that he's rewatching it with his wife, proving that great anime really is worth a second run.Next up, the dice take us into the “How Do I…?” segment, where Charles and Joe tackle a real parenting conundrum: What do you do when your kid wants to quit an activity mid-season? Both dads agree that sticking it out is an important life lesson — it builds character, teaches commitment, and keeps those registration fees from going to waste! The show keeps rolling with “Daddy, Tell Me A Story,” where the hosts get reflective about how parenting evolves over time. From strict curfews to more relaxed rules, Charles and Joe share how being a parent to your firstborn can look very different from raising your youngest — and why that's not necessarily a bad thing. Then it's time for the “Parliament of Papas” segment, featuring a speakpipe from fan-favorite Devocite, who tells a tale about making his daughter clean up a biohazard left by her dog. Charles and Joe weigh in with their takes on responsibility, consequences, and the fine art of gross parenting moments that build character (and stories for the podcast). Finally, the episode wraps up with a classic Bad Dad Joke that compares air conditioning to computers — because, of course, both stop working at the worst possible times.Full of warmth, wit, and dad-level wisdom, this episode is a perfect mix of heart and humor. Whether you're here for the laughs, the life lessons, or the anime talk, you're bound to Find your FAMdom right here with Charles and Joe.Wise_N_Nerdy: Where Fatherhood Meets Fandom

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1195: Toyota doubles down on hybrids with a $14B battery bet. Waymo hits the freeway ahead of Tesla in the autonomy race. And OpenAI unveils a “warmer” GPT-5.1 with customizable personalities and smarter responses. We'll be at Automobility LA at the LA Auto Show next Thursday, November 20 hosting the LA Auto Show Sessions. Thanks to our friends at Cars Commerce and Curbee for making it possible. 25% off registration with code MoreThanCars. https://laautoshow.com/meShow Notes with links:As U.S. EV momentum slows, Toyota is increasing its already big bet that hybrids, not full electrics, are the future of American green driving, anchored by a massive new battery plant in North Carolina.Toyota's new $14B plant in Liberty, NC is its largest U.S. battery investment yet.The facility will power hybrid production in Kentucky and Alabama, with plans for EV and plug-in hybrid output.Roughly half of Toyota's U.S. sales are already hybrids or EVs, led by hybrid-only Camry and Sienna models. The RAV4 will become 100% hybrid in 2026, with plug-in sales expected to quadruple.“Regardless of where the regulation goes, we will have the capacity to support our compliance needs,” said David Christ, Toyota North America brand chief.Waymo has a commanding lead in the autonomous vehicle race now launching the first-ever robotaxi service on highways across three major U.S. cities. The move distances it even further from rivals like Tesla and Zoox.New highway service rolls out in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, initially for limited riders. This milestone extends Waymo's reach to San Jose and introduces airport pickups at San Jose International. The Waymo Driver has shown 91% fewer serious-injury crashes compared to human drivers.Waymo now operates over 2,500 vehicles and has logged more than 100 million driverless miles.“The Waymo Driver does not get tired, does not lose focus and does not make emotional decisions behind the wheel,” said project manager Jacopo Sannazzaro.OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5.1, calling it a smarter, more engaging upgrade to its August release of GPT-5—complete with expanded personality settings and model matching enhancements.GPT-5.1 includes “Instant” and “Thinking” variants, optimized for speed, clarity, and task persistence.New personality presets include Candid, Quirky, Nerdy, Cynical, and more, adding tone flexibility.Users will begin to see model auto-matching and personalization tools in settings. The upgrade follows user backlash to GPT-5 and competition from Anthropic powering Microsoft tools.“We're well past the point of one-size-fits-all,” said Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Voice actor JP Karliak (Morph in X-Men '97, Gargamel and Razamel in Smurfs) joins us for a fascinating discussion about how nerdy media shapes our understanding of identity, community, and civic participation. As founder of Queer Vox, a nonprofit supporting LGBTQIA+ voice actors, and co-founder of NerdsVote, which works to get nerds involved in democracy, JP brings a unique perspective on how superhero stories and geek culture can serve as gateways to uncomfortable but necessary conversations about representation and social change.Key Discussion Points:How voice actors can use their "notable nerd" status to mobilize fan communities toward civic engagementWhy nerddom inherently connects to empathy and understanding otherness, particularly through franchises like X-MenWhat authentic casting means for LGBTQIA+ characters beyond performative diversityWhy seeking only comfort in entertainment prevents engagement with different perspectivesThe essential role of discomfort in growth and understandingJP brings depth and nuance to these topics through his experience voicing Morph, a non-binary shapeshifter in X-Men '97, while sharing insights about the voice acting industry and the importance of authentic representation both in front of and behind the microphone. The conversation weaves through representation, activism, and the power of storytelling to create change, ultimately highlighting how superhero narratives can serve as modern mythology that helps us process and progress through today's most challenging social issues.Guest Bio:JP Karliak is a veteran voice actor whose characters span animation, gaming, and anime. Notable roles include Morph in X-Men '97, Gargamel and Razamel in Smurfs (2025), Boss Baby in Netflix series, and the Joker in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. In anime, he's known for voicing Kozo Fuyutsuki in Netflix's Neon Genesis Evangelion dub. His gaming credits include N. Tropy in Crash Bandicoot titles and Wolfgang in the Skylanders series. This episode of Wise_N_Nerdy with Charles and Joe kicks off with a heartfelt Question of the Week: “What is your favorite Robin Williams movie?” From the magic of Aladdin and the swashbuckling adventure of Hook to the emotional depth of Awakenings and What Dreams May Come, the hosts and listeners celebrate the incredible range and impact of one of the world's most beloved actors. After rolling the dice, fate leads the duo into the “How Do I…?” segment, where Charles and Joe explore how to decide which causes are truly worth supporting. They discuss meaningful giving, how to avoid pitfalls like high-overhead charities, and how to make sure your generosity makes a real difference. Next, it's time for the “Parliament of Papas” — and this week's Reddit story sparks big discussion. When a hungry 15-year-old reacts to her mom snagging fries without asking, a simple moment turns into a full-blown family standoff. Was it selfishness, manipulation, or just a misunderstanding about boundaries and respect? The hosts weigh in with empathy, humor, and dad-level insight. The dice then bless the show with a “Daddy, Tell Me A Story” segment, where Charles and Joe share personal moments that make them feel awesome — those little victories and proud dad vibes that remind us to celebrate life's small wins. But no Wise_N_Nerdy episode would be complete without bad dad jokes, and this week's come courtesy of the always hilarious Devocite, complete with his daughter's eye-roll-worthy reactions. Finally, the fates guide the hosts to “What Are You Nerding Out About?” — where Charles shares his passion for connecting with people and helping them thrive, while Joe dives into his new favorite cozy fantasy anime, Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill, a deliciously heartwarming show about magic, food, and friendship. One of our favorite things to do in our Modern Mrs Darcy Book Club is connect with the authors we all love. Every so often we have the opportunity to share one of those conversations with all of you, too. Today you'll be hearing from Kevin Wilson, author of our 2025 Summer Reading Guide selection Run for the Hills and a writer we've long looked forward to hosting in this space. Our conversation covers a lot of ground today, from Wilson's approach to writing his stories to topics like what it means to fit in, how weirdness impacts his writing style, and how a PT Cruiser ended up as a key feature in his book. We kick off today's conversation with a bit of behind the scenes conversation between Anne and our Modern Mrs Darcy Book Club community manager, Ginger Horton. We wanted to give you some idea of what you're going to be listening to today. Whether you've read Kevin Wilson or not, we think you'll enjoy this opportunity to hear an author talk about their work and their process in a really interesting way. Find the list of titles mentioned today on our show notes page at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/499. In addition to other major milestones, we're about to celebrate our 10-year anniversary of the Book Club. Today we share insights into what exactly we do in Book Club and why you might want to consider joining us in what we call the best corner of the internet. Find out more at modernmrsdarcy.com/club. (but thanks for that quote anyway). Hosted by Klein, Ally, and a cast of weirdos (both on the team and from their audience), the show is known for its raw, offbeat style, offering a mix of sarcastic banter, candid interviews, and an unfiltered take on everything from culture to the chaos of everyday life. With a loyal, engaged fanbase and an addiction for pushing boundaries, the show delivers the perfect blend of humor and insight, all while keeping things fun, fresh, and sometimes a little bit illegal. 2024 © 2021 Audacy, Inc. Raggedy and Emiry have debated the definition of anime to death. Now it is time to define shonen, more specifically its tropes. When they work, when they are overplayed, and those that break free from the mold. Intro music is "Shonen Showdown Opening" by Syn Strain In The Pentane and the ending music is "Chiptunes" by Liborio Conti (https://www.no-copyright-music.com/) You can support the podcast in the following ways: Merchandise Store: www.AAAShop.info Discord: www.AAADiscord.com Subscribe: www.aaapodcast.com/join Donations: www.aaapodcast.com/donate Patreon: www.patreon.com/AAAPodcast Thank you for your generosity and kindness
