Her songwriting became part of the American cultural vocabulary, while songs such as “9 to 5,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “I Will Always Love You” introduced different generations to her unique combination of storytelling, humor, vulnerability, and musical craft.Dolly's charitable work is an enormous part of her legacy. In 1988, she founded the Dollywood Foundation, and in 1995 she launched Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, inspired in part by her father, who was unable to read or write. What began as a program providing books to children in her home community grew into an international literacy initiative. By June 2026, the Imagination Library had gifted more than 325 million books to children across multiple countries.Professor Aubrey and Tim also discuss something that makes Dolly's legacy particularly interesting: the consistency of the values underneath all those different careers.Dolly Parton's life also gives us an opportunity to talk about the relationship between authenticity and reinvention.
