The Mentee Podcast

Speeding up the results is always a tempting offer. However, speed often creates drag in our lives. The more we rush things, the more we drag the process down. This is a simple principle of aerodynamics. So in this episode of The Mentee Podcast, I invited Nick McLean, a real estate broker and trained airline pilot, to talk about this. He shares the importance of slowing down, committing to your routine, and trusting the process. Reduce drag in your life and reach your life's maximum potential. Does this sound like something you need to learn? Tune in to this episode, and start getting rid of the drag impeding your life! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Stick to your routine. Eliminate the drag in life. Do not be ashamed of what you do. Push on despite impediments. Episode Highlights: [03:24] Nick's Writing Regimen For Nick, writing his thoughts is an essential routine. Every day, he writes about his learnings and ideas, whether it's about real estate, aerodynamics, or life. Then, he shares them through blogs, social media, and emails. It's a productive routine, but it takes determination and some contingencies to stick to it. [15:15] How to Eliminate the Drags in Life People always like to speed up the process. However, the principle of aerodynamics teaches this: speed creates drag. Speed is oftentimes not sustainable, and this applies to many different pursuits in life. Writing improves with practice over time. Real estate investments take time to compound. Trust the process and slow down. [28:15] Transitioning to Real Estate Getting into real estate was not a quick decision for Nick. There was a lot of back-and-forths – a lot of drag. He did not want to acknowledge the salesperson in him, and a lot of people don't. But once he did, he was able to eliminate a lot of drag from his life. There's no shame in acknowledging what you do. [36:12] Pushing On Despite Impediments During the market recession in 2012, many real estate agents quit. However, those who remained and persisted were able to benefit eventually from the lesser competition. When you push on despite the impediments, the benefits compound over time. Notable quotes from the Episode:  [16:10] “As you're creating speed, you're also creating drag.” [27:36] “Leaders are really good at pointing out problems and telling people they did it wrong. They need to be better at finding how to make it easier for them.” [41:13] “Survival equals growth in the midst of a recession.” Resources Mentioned: Connect with Wyatt Graves: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wyattgraves/ (LinkedIn) | https://wyattgraves.com/ (Website) The Mentee Podcast: https://thementee.com/podcast/ (Website) | https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-mentee-podcast/id957438503 (Apple) | https://open.spotify.com/show/54f2lCwK07XLoMnu80Efj5 (Spotify) Connect with Nick McLean: https://www.nickmcleanrealestate.com/ (Website) | https://www.facebook.com/nickmcleanrealestategroup/ (Facebook) | Email    https://www.amazon.com/Psychology-Money-Timeless-lessons-happiness/dp/0857197681 (The Psychology of Money by Morgan House)

Two years ago, I sat down with real estate coach, Nick McLean, and the episode impacted a lot of people. Today we have the privilege of digging back into his mind, and learn from his knack for bringing an actionable framework to any concept. He's going to share a powerful thought process that binds the most fulfilled and successful people - making your work more meaningful.    Nick is an entrepreneur, coach and founder/CEO of the Nick McLean Real Estate Group. The former pilot uses knowledge in systems pilot and applying the same techniques he learned from the aviation industry to build a successful real estate business.    What's the most meaningful part of being in real estate? Money, financial success, commission checks? Surprisingly, no. For many agents, the buzz and satisfaction of cashing a commission check doesn't live up to all the hype. From Nick McLean's perspective there's a really good reason why we don't get a dopamine hit from the money - it doesn't provide the meaning that makes us happy and fulfilled.    What do we pursue if we want our jobs and lives to have more meaning? Chasing the parts of the process that give us the most joy, and creating those meaningful impact points in our day.  Guest Info   Nick is an entrepreneur, coach and founder/CEO of the Nick McLean Real Estate Group. The traditional real estate model is comprised of thousands and thousands of individual agents working underneath a brokerage or franchise.  This forces that agent to be a jack of all trades and master of none.  This reduces the avg. sales per agent and their marketing dollars they can allocate to their clients.  That is why Nick in 2012 built his firm as a team.  Literally when you hire Nick and his team to buy or sell you get access to everyone in his firm.    Because they work together they sell more homes and have a marketing budget that dwarfs their competition giving their clients the MOST exposure possible so, their home sells faster for more money.Nick knows what he's doing for sure, and in this episode, he and Maria discuss what it means to not only set the standard but to train to get your people there!

On today's episode of the “Space Junk” podcast, guest host Luke Pringle interviews Gilmour Space Propulsion Engineer Nick McLean (pronounced like John McClane) about hybrid rockets and how to get a job in the Space industry.Luke is a 16-year-old year-10 student from Cherrybrook Technology High School who has been doing Work Experience with The Space Junk Podcast. Luke is studying engineering, physics, and textile design, and would one day like to work in the space industry as an astronaut or maybe an astronautical engineer. It's been an awesome experience having Luke join my week in a virtual format, and I'd encourage anyone out there who does something cool to consider offering virtual work experience to a young person during this challenging time. Luke picked the guest and the topic, and hosted, edited and produced this episode.Nick McLean is a propulsion engineer who works for Gilmour Space Technologies, a leading venture-funded Australian space company headquartered in Queensland, Australia that is developing new hybrid-engine rockets and associated technology to support the development of a low-cost space launch vehicle.Together Nick and Luke discuss what a hybrid engine is and the advantages of hybrid engines over normal solid and liquid engines. Additionally, they discuss how to get into the space sector and what traits are looked for in budding engineers and scientists. Also during the recording, a bird outside Nick's window was determined on interrupting the recording session and being in on the action during the podcast. Happy Anniversary! 1 year ago today I launched the Learn For 2 podcast with 3 pillars and 1 goal in mind. To document my journey to build an international real estate team. To learn with the intent to teach to others To find my voice for those who need it The 1 goal was to do it 5 days a week. 365 days later I have increased my team from a size of 45 to 180, I have taught people how to create their own podcast, and I have shared vulnerable stories that others needed to hear. And by focusing on just 5 episodes a week, I sit here at episode #263 reflecting on what I’ve learned over the last year. I’ve learned how important micro commitments are. I first heard this just over a year ago from Jon Cheplak. By adopting this ideology I only focused on the next episode, instead of the entire 263. I’ve learned that when you make something “non-negotiable” you find a way to do it. I have recorded episodes in my home office, the skate park, my car at my daughter’s soccer practice, and even on the beach in Mexico to make sure that I got it done. I’ve learned that I am still building a legacy and I am still a connector. I've learned it is ok to tell people that everything is NOT perfect and it is ok to let my guard down. I’ve learned that someone “out there” is waiting for you to be vulnerable and share something personal that they may be going through, so they don’t feel alone. I’ve interviewed one of my best friend’s Nick McLean, and learned that even if we think our conversation will only be 25 minutes we will record for an hour and a half. I've learned that depression is even deeper and darker than I thought from Scott Mendell. I’ve learned from Clifford Duvernois that impacting 1 million people is an attainable goal, and I believe 100% that he will accomplish it. I’ve learned that Eric Verdi is on a mission to pull a superhero skill out of each and every person he meets and shine their signal bright into the night sky for those who need it. I’ve learned a ton of things this last year and I have grown both personally and professionally from this experience, but what I’ve learned most is that it is ok to be wrong. It is ok to BE wrong but it is not ok to STAY wrong. I’ve learned that I can change my ideologies and beliefs based on new information. I’ve learned that I don’t need to “double-down” on what I once believed just to be right. I’d rather get it right. I’ve learned that this podcast will be a journal for my kids, grandkids, and really anyone who may need it for years to come. Is it perfect? Not even close, but it’s me and I’ve shared it with you, I’ve shared it with thousands. One year later I’ve realized this… I will continue to grow. I will continue to change. I will continue to be wrong. I will continue to evolve. I will continue to become. Because when I stop continuing doing all of these things, I will not continue at all. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/learn-for-2/message

I'm still on a "Leadership High" after that interview with Nick McLean. I have been constantly thinking of the ways that people have the ability to lead. Some big, some small. And the ability to lead can involve you leading yourself. Today Eva, took a chance on something, something that is way out of her comfort zone. But, she took a chance, one that she would typically not bother with. To say that I am proud of her for this risk that she has taken on would be an understatement. She is leading by letting others know that, they too, can take a risk. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/learn-for-2/message

lead·er·ship /ˈlēdərˌSHip/ -the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Nick McLean, Founder and Owner of the Nick McLean Real Estate Group sits down with me to discuss what leadership means to him. What does leadership look like? Many times we think leadership is about perfection, drive, motivation, and discipline. Confusing actual leadership with some overwhelming concept that only few a have been chosen to undertake. Believing it is some unreachable phenomenon, that you must be born with. The reality is, it is something that is earned and must be maintained as your responsibilities increase. Now, that can sound like it is a lot of work and at times can be overwhelming or scary. But, not all leadership comes in the form of a motivational speech, a strong lecture, taking a bullet for the team, or appearing to be perfect or without flaws. Sometimes, leadership is about getting someone back on track, reminding them to get back to their routine and act “As-If” As-if, it were a normal day and you were going to the office. “Do that and you’ll get back on track, and be ready for the next move" Yes, leadership can absolutely come in the form of the most epic motivational speech you’ve ever heard, or showing your team that you can be strong during a tough time and be someone they can lean on. But, it doesn’t always require the strongest person, with the most accolades, and the loudest voice. Sometimes it is a simple nudge in the right direction or a small amount of responsibility to be placed on someone. Leaders aren’t born, they are created. And, if you want to… You can be a leader too. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/learn-for-2/message

You must earn your job each day. - Nick McLean Like a tech industry, you have a certain amount of runway before you go to plan B. And I went to plan B, and C, and D. I applied at the Air Force Reserve. I was moments away from joining the military before I sold my first home. People take online real estate courses, but they don't really understand real estate. And the consumer doesn't. I'm going to make money without selling. I was figuring out how to sell without making phone calls. I was scared of the phone. So what did I do? I started writing letters. I wrote tons of letters. I got my website working, and I just did a ton of Craigslist ads, and I got good at responding by e-mail quickly. So I would get up at 6 AM and do Craigslist ads until 10 AM, and when people started responding, I would immediately respond by e-mail. About year two I came to terms with being a salesperson and I realized that the people that were making more money than me were really good on the phone. I went from 12 to 32 homes when I realized, wow, the phone is an amazing tool to convert to appointments — combined with e-mails and letters. I wouldn't necessarily be scared of the loss of income. And I think that's maybe the biggest thing people have a problem with, well I can't afford it because it's gonna cost me $30,000 a year. And you might be making $100,000 or even $90,000. For you to break through that barrier to maintaining 60 a year or 100 home sales a year, or in volume terms working in higher priced deals or bigger deals, you're going to need an assistant to take away all of that busy work, all the non-dollar-productive activities. The goal is to make money and to have a, build a life around it so you can enjoy it. Start being mindful of the deals you're losing. - Jason Will The assistants you hire will be better at transactions than you. The listing coordinators you hire will be better at inputting listings. Your advertisers will be better. They're just going to be better than you eventually. And that's the goal. You have to be able to one, delegate the task by giving the assignment over and explaining it. Assistants are asking that because they just don't wanna let you down. They want to make sure they don't mess up. Delegate the task, you give 'em a deadline, you then have to, they need to report back, or you need to check in with them, and then you need to review their work. Don't fear making mistakes. We need to make mistakes every single day; otherwise we're not trying hard enough. Make a plan to invest in your people and then you have to inspect what you expect from those people. You need to reward the behaviors that you want to encourage, and then you need to help them understand where they're missing it or veering off track. - Jason Will You're going to have a massive ROI in this inspection of expectations and your training. When an agent hires someone to do the busywork, they're not re-investing those hours into the super dollar-productive activities. The sales aspect of it was not for you, but you were able to figure out a way before you became, or before you committed to becoming a salesperson. - Jason Will You want to hire to your weakness, but you don't want to bring team members on to do things you're not willing to do yourself. Transfer those skills. - Jason Will People are hiring coaches before they're even coachable. - Jason Will I would say hire a coach as early as you can afford it, number one. But, you have to be coachable. I sold 101 homes my income didn't really increase, but my responsibility did, and if you're going to shy away from responsibility, then don't start a team. You're going to find meaning in responsibility because you're now only responsible not just for yourself, but for other people. As you grow, it gives you an opportunity to be more and more responsible for not yourself, but for other people. I grow; it's just an opportunity for me to help more people. If you define success as getting an agent to make more money, you're going to be in a losing battle. You're investing in your teams future, and by making their goals your goals, everybody wins. I feel like I'm a better person than I was before I started a team and I think I'm a better person than if I didn't start a team. Hire a coach, and I say hire as soon as you can afford it, and just tell 'em from the get-go, give 'em permission to pile it on, and that you're going to implement everything. And be careful what you tell 'em to do because you're going to do it. I see people dabble in coaching; they dabble in marketing. Let me see how it works, and I can always cancel because you can cancel most anything. You can cancel a coach, you can cancel your CRM, you can cancel your marketing program, but you'll never see the benefits if you don't stick it out. Don't stop things ... people stop way too early. They get out of the industry too soon. They stop expired letters too early. They stop FSBO letters too early. They stop prospecting early. They get off the conversation too early. They do everything too soon. You have to go all the way through.   ///////////////////////////////// We would like to know what you think about the IMPACT Agent podcast.
