He started his career working for local County Kildare newspapers before being invited to write for the iconic Irish pop culture bible Hot Press Magazine as a music, book, and restaurant critic.             His debut book, The Cinema of Tom DiCillo: Include Me Out, was released in 2018.  Wayne followed it with well-received works on subjects like Burt Reynolds, cinematographer Nick McLean, the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, and legendary Hollywood filmmaker Walter Hill. I've read both Welcome to Elm Street and Walter Hill: The Cinema of a Hollywood Maverick and can tell you that they're both deeply researched, entertainingly detailed looks at how influential filmmakers create the dreams the world loves to watch. I highly recommend Wayne's work to you.            Look for the release of Wayne's latest book, Hired Guns: Portraits of Women in Alternative Music, co-written with his best friend, acclaimed musician Amanda Kramer, who's been the keyboardist/vocalist of The Psychedelic Furs, 10,000 Maniacs, Siouxsie Sioux, The Golden Palominos, and Information Society.             He's also busy writing three upcoming books, including another collaboration with Amanda Kramer, which is a study of the evolution of film soundtracks in the revolutionary New Hollywood era.             Wayne's also working with cinematographer Roy Wagner on a biography documenting Wagner's acclaimed career, called Beyond the Shadows, as well as a critical/cultural overview of the Halloween movies entitled, The Ongoing Halloween Franchise: 13 Films and Counting.

Our guest today says sales is all about helping buyers make informed purchase decisions and giving them the information they need. But there is so much more nuance behind that simple definition, and what goes on in the day to day of a salesperson. So we are thrilled to be discussing applicable lessons from sales that can be useful for any professional with Brian Higgins, a Teaching Assistant Professional at Leeds Business and sales and business development executive. Brian joins host Amanda Kramer to talk about misperceptions many have about working in sales, the art of a good conversation, surprising skills taught in sales courses at Leeds, and the unique mentorship opportunities available here.If you are interested in becoming a mentor for sales students at Leeds, and have 5 years experience employing a sales process with good results, we would love to have you reach out! You can email Brian directly at Brian.Higgins@colorado.edu to learn more.Leeds Business Insights Podcast is a production of Leeds School of Business and is produced by University FM.EPISODE QUOTES:The illusion of good and bad personalities[00:10:02] You know what's interesting is that we suffer from this illusion that we have good personalities and bad personalities. There really is no such thing as a good personality and a bad personality. It's that I have a certain kind of personality, and you have a certain kind of personality. And if we're going to get along, we're probably going to need to flex a little bit so that, you know, we can come together in the middle. The value of building relationship in sales[00:02:54] I think what's important is that people understand that no matter how well you communicate, if you don't have the ability to develop some relationship with a person or the people you're selling to, your ability to communicate is not going to be very valuable. On understanding how to sell[00:08:12] Even though you may not be employed to sell, understanding how to sell and understanding what's important in order to sell yourself or your ideas can be very, very helpful in your life.Questions are powerful[00:14:54] Questions are so powerful. The ability to ask questions that are purposeful and meaningful puts the focus on the other person. It's not about us. It's more about you. Tell me about this. Tell me about that. So the ability to ask questions in a conversation is incredibly powerful.SHOW LINKS:Brian Higgins Faculty Profile at the Leeds School of Business

And it doesn't have to be necessarily a medical thing, but all those other things—how are you going to end up and what are you going to do with it? And the reality is: take the risk and embrace the knowledge that comes with it.How do you build your comfort with risk and live with a risk forward mentality?[00:13:06] If you have that personal infrastructure and the intentionality in your life, those two things allow you to find success if you're willing to be open for it. But you have to be ready to go do that and know that, hey, things fail all along the way. Okay. How are you going to get out of it?On finding the right support system[00:10:56] Find the people that are supportive, and by supportive, it doesn't mean people who are like, "Yay! You're the best Brock." It doesn't mean that it's the people who are truly there for you and care about you genuinely.SHOW LINKS:Brock Weatherup on LinkedIn

So much of our free time is consumed with posting on social media, sharing our day to day lives and crafting a personal narrative or brand online. How to do that is changing. How to signal that you care about that depends on the segment, it depends on the technology, but it's always going to be what people care about. How do you find the most genuine content?[00:19:25] You want to let consumers speak for you. In order to do that, you have to be able to let go. You have to be able to not have full control over your content, and that is how you get the most genuine, authentic content that consumers are sharing and really believe in the product and the brand, and other consumers can judge that very well.Reducing frictions leads to better conversions[00:16:46] Reducing friction is only good when consumers are ready to process it, ready to act, and this is going to also lead to better tracking of conversions, better data and metrics, and analytics as well. You can't compare one social media or type of technology to another.[00:18:18] There's no one social media or type of technology that's better or worse than the others. It's about the selection effects, where certain types of consumers—younger consumers and consumers that are more technologically savvy—are able to embrace and engage with more varied and diverse formats and more interactive content.SHOW LINKS:Alixandra Barasch Faculty Profile at Leeds School of BusinessAlixandra Barasch - Google Scholar

And it is very important to really understand the market that you're in, how much it costs per square foot, how high you can build, how wide you can build, what kind of municipality you're dealing with, and how difficult they are.The value of leverage[00:12:19] Leverage is the most important part of development and something that you should really focus on understanding. There's a difference between the science of money and the science of maybe something like brain surgery, and the science of money is complicated. But your deep understanding of that is the most helpful thing when it comes to doing development and construction. What is the current challenge in the construction industry?[00:05:24] Right now, the biggest challenge for us is the economic cycle. We have rising interest rates. Also, bring up cap rates, which is how your building is valued at the end of the day. SHOW LINKS:Swenson - The Swenson GroupCase Swenson on LinkedIn

It's also important to recognize their heterogeneity, how they are different, and how they may have different priorities, or how I can offer them different tasks depending on who they are.The role of retention in volunteering [00:17:42] Retention is also important because charities want to avoid losing knowledge and experience. Moreover, research has already shown that when volunteers gain experience with a platform, they are more willing to take over maybe monotonous tasks or other tasks that are needed to be done for the long-term sustainability of the platform. The power of transparency[00:08:54] There is also a lot of research showing that even revealing some sensitive information to an extent, like costs, also incentivize people, really makes customers feel more valued by the companies. And they appreciate that with more loyalty or purchasing more, one key takeaway for businesses in general and for people is the power of transparency.SHOW LINKS:Gloria Urrea Faculty Profile at Leeds School of BusinessGloria Urrea - Google Scholar

He outlines some of the key themes that emerge in the book and discusses the chapter he co-authored with his current PhD student, Artur Pytlarz, which aims to further develop the theoretical perspectives informing rural criminological research. This is the final episode in a special series of LawPod recorded at the European Society of Criminology Conference in Malaga, Spain, in September 2022. In this episode, Dr Amanda Kramer interviews Dr María Laura Böhm (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany). This episode explores María Laura's research on extractive industry activity in Latin America as a form of state-corporate crime. She outlines a variety of harms caused by the extractive industries that have significant consequences for the environment, individuals, and broader communities, such as environmental destruction, long term illness, displacement, and death. She explains how the causes of these harms are multifaceted and complex, but that the lack of regulation and control allows asymmetrical power relationships to flourish, enabling this type of state-corporate crime. María Laura also introduces listeners to her concept of the ‘crime of maldevelopment' as a new way of understanding the global and regional criminogenic context, and as a new way for understanding how to implement more effective solutions. This is the second in a special series of LawPod recorded at the European Society of Criminology Conference in Malaga, Spain, in September 2022. On this week's show, we pair two of the greatest living songwriters, artists who've reimagined what the form can look like, and what it can accomplish. The Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt and ex-Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker each have great new music in the world; when I heard the latter was coming to NYC, I instantly knew I had to try to get these two together in person for a Talkhouse Podcast convo. Thankfully, when presented with the idea, both were psyched! Over cups of tea at Hook and Fade Studios in Brooklyn (before the pandemic), the guys sat down for a delightfully freewheeling conversation about songwriting — and how they both love to subvert its norms in different ways — as well as the vastly different approaches they took to making their new LPs. But of course with these two, there's so much more here, including (but not limited to!): a moving discussion of reunions with their showbiz fathers who had abandoned them; the bad omen that nearly caused Jarvis to quit music in the year 2000; why Stephin’s new sexual fetish might be a “one time only” experience; and their shared love of that "hippy writer" Richard Brautigan. Amanda talks about her love of melodramatic performances and pushing her actresses to reach beyond realism. She also coins a term for her type of filmmaking: "Tamponnui." Plus, she discusses the fact that she never uses a camera, rarely bathes, and would happily be crowned "The Female Fassbinder." Check out the trailer here for Ladyworld. Episode 62: Information Society - Information Society (1988) Part 2   Brian and Sarah take some time during their "Summer of Concerts" to resume their discussion on the 1988 major-label debut album from the American band Information Society.  In Part 1, an Apple IIe computer helped determine the order of the songs to be discussed. Unfortunately, the machine couldn't handle all that pressure and shut down soon afterwards, so for this episode, our hosts are left to determine the song order themselves. Part 3 - Track by Track, continued There's a mixture of songs from both Side One and Side Two to talk about, and our hosts decide to leave the biggest song for last. Or do they? Part of their discussion centers on the fact that depending on the audience, Information Society's 'biggest hit' varies among three different songs. Brian and Sarah also talk about two more videos, more Star Trek samples, a radio publicity stunt gone awry, and Amanda Kramer's top ten foods, most of which don't seem to be actual foods! Something in the Air Over the Sea Repetition Tomorrow What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy) Part 4 - Extra Credit Since Brian and Sarah spent quite a bit of time discussing freestyle music over these two episodes, they decide to review a list of the "top 100 freestyle songs," and each of them chooses their favorite song from the list. Part 5 - Final Review and Rating Both hosts have said some pretty good things about this album all the way through, although this episode did have a few more negative comments from each of them than Part 1 did. But you'll have to listen to the end to see how much of a difference that makes to their final record-adapter ratings! Bonus  Feature - Sarah's Secret Song Snippet  Sarah's Secret Song Snippet is back, and Brian thinks this one is the most difficult yet! Sarah starts expressing some regrets, but it's too late to turn back now! Listen to the end and then message the hosts with your guess, for your chance to be "Sarah's Secret Song Snippet Star of the Week!" After musings on German versions of fairy tales, the World Cup, and Lesley's sweariness watching football we begin with the recent reshuffle of Scottish government ministers. The faces may have changed but what about the policies? This and Lesley's recent wee trip up to Lismore sparks her thoughts on local democracy, the price of land and rural depopulation. While in Ireland I took the opportunity to listen to Irish opinion on Brexit, in particular the excellent Tony Connelly and Colm O'Mongain's RTE Brexit podcast. I reflect on their interviews with Amanda Kramer and Lord Patten. Lesley gives her thoughts on why swathes of England are still wedded to Brexit despite the mounting evidence of its disastrous economic impact. I attempt to lift the gloom after the surprise Democratic primary victory of Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez. Is this the signal of a US left response to Trumpism or will it be strangled at birth by the party machine? There's also T20 cricket and the latest on Willo Flood.

It’s a Living “A Very Special It’s a Living” (18 March, 1989) We’re joined by the very funny Amanda Kramer who brings some much needed lady business to Very Special Television! We watched the extremely 80’s sitcom It’s a Living - the show about the lives and loves of the waitresses at the glamorous rotating restaurant Above the Top high above the Bonaventure hotel in Los Angeles. Jan (Barrie Youngfellow) is extremely pregnant and is surrounded by the constant bickering and in-fighting of her fellow servers. Maybe the restaurant is rotating a little too fast today but Jan goes into labor early and is rushed to the hospital by Dot (Gail Edwards). Things take a turn for the worst and Jan has an out of body experience with Death himself (Danny Thomas). Together Death and Jan go on a sort of reverse Its a Wonderful Life as Jan tries to prove why she’s worthy of another chance. Episode 29 of Very Special Television delves into forgotten sitcoms, shows canceled before their time and jazzy sitcom theme songs. See you Above the Top!!
