Nigel Richards, a New Zealander living in Malaysia, defeated 145 competitors and won 22 consecutive matches to claim the title in Grenada, Spain. Known as the quote, Tiger Woods of Scrabble, Richards has mastered the game across multiple languages despite not speaking them. He has a unique ability to memorize dictionaries without understanding anything what the words mean, and has led him to winning nearly 200 tournaments, including French in 2015 and 2018. Now, that is crazy, guys. Did you ever meet somebody with that kind of photographic memory, and you're like, that is a very odd person? If you have done it, if you've won championships in Spanish and French, and I assume English, wow, that is a unique person. Joel Saxum: Is there money to be won playing Scrabble? Allen Hall: Evidently there is because he's won so many championships. It's the, from all the information I could find online he, this guy is super human in how he does this. According to some of his friends, he can look at a page of words and remember all those words. It's like a photographic memory, even though he couldn't carry a conversation in French or Spanish at all, he can't carry one. It's just understanding how words go together. Phil Totaro: It's technically a I forget specifically what it's called, but it's actually technically a form of autism that allows you to do that. allows a person to do that. It's still an astonishing talent. So Joel Saxum: what I would say to as a segue into the show today is some people have an optimized electrical grid in their brain and it works better. You're listening to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast brought to you by BuildTurbines. com. Learn, train, and be a part of the clean energy revolution. Visit BuildTurbines. com today. Allen Hall: In the latest edition of PES Wind Magazine, which you can download at PESWind. com, a good article from Tresios, and I did not know that business very well until I read the article. It's a big subsea construction and marine services company. And they've actually reorganized themselves because there's so much offshore wind work that they're, they have divided into basically two sections to do that, subseas construction and marine services. And they have a third division because there's so much work in offshore wind. They have a sort of a human resources division. It's a company, workforce company called Mr. James. You can go to the Mr. James website. It's actually quite good. It's one of the better human resource workforce websites that I've ever seen, honestly. It's pretty cool. So when you're looking for people to work at sea, Mr. James is not a bad place to go look for those people. But Joel the interesting thing about this is that there's so much activity around wind. And you just don't see all this work that's happening, but it's major construction work.

The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk Text LEARNERS to 44222 For full show notes, go to www.LearningLeader.com Episode #337: Scott H. Young - How To Become An Ultra Learner Scott Young is a writer who undertakes interesting self-education projects, such as attempting to learn MIT's four-year computer science curriculum in twelve months and learning four languages in one year. Scott incorporates the latest research about the most effective learning methods and the stories of other ultralearners like himself—among them Ben Franklin, Judit Polgár, and Richard Feynman, as well as a host of others, such as little-known modern polymaths like Nigel Richards who won the World Championship of French Scrabble—without knowing French.  He is the author of the best-selling book, UltraLearning. Notes: Commonalities of leaders who sustain excellence: Understand how excellence works Learning, constantly thinking about the process of improving Being interested in learning new things... Scott finds the mind fascinating Encountering things that people have done that are jaw dropping Projects: Why he failed to learn French as an exchange student "Simple decisions you make early on can have big consequences." Because he didn't go all in and immerse himself in the language, he always reverted back to his native tongue Go for inversion from the beginning.  This is why he did the "year without English." "Doing the hard thing makes it easier in the long run, it accelerates skills more quickly" UltraLearning - A strategy for acquiring skills and knowledge that is both self-directed and intense As a manager, recognize that there are many different skills you can possess to be successful... Know what you need to be good at.  Break it down to the component skills... Have a process Get better at each important skill Think: "What would it be like to be amazing at this?" Tristan de Montebello:  He wanted to learn a new skill that was completely outside of his current skill set (he's a musician) Instead of learning another instrument, he chose to become a world class public speaker He started as an amateur and ended as a finalist for a public speaking championship. How?  He got on stage twice a day, took improv class, and compressed the process. "He made the conscious decision to become excellent."  And then executed... Process for a person who has a full time job/family/mortgage: This doesn't need to be a full time endeavor "How are you using every minute of every day?" Take on intensive bursts Follow your curiosity and obsessions Ramit Sethi -- "See the game being played around you" Principles: Spend time figuring out the best way to learn what you want to learn.  What tools and resources are available? Drill, attack your weakest point.  Sometimes you shouldn't learn a skill (ex: fixing your car... Hire a mechanic instead) Every complicated skill has components Test to learn Repeated review - read over and over Free recall - read the text once, then close the book.  Try to recall what you learned.  In an experiment, free recall learners retained more.  PRACTICE remembering something.  It impacts how you process information. Anders Ericsson - Deliberate practice: In 40% of the cases, feedback hurt.  Task oriented feedback works best. How we process feedback is most important "If you're doggedly trying to be an ultra learner and sustain excellence, emotional consequences are important..." Born with it vs. Ability to learn: Anyone has the ability to learn anything Everyone has their own abilities, their own pace. Recognize your capacity to improve but don't compare to others Life advice: Read more books - It expands your mind Meet more interesting people - Subtlety informs choices, expands group you meet Go do ambitious things - bold projects Why joining The Learning Leader Circle is a good idea

Scott is an avid learner and he has created some fascinating experiments, such as:  “The MIT Challenge” where he attempted to learn MIT’s 4-year computer science curriculum without taking classes, “The Year Without English,” where he attempted to learn four languages in one year, “The 30 Day Portrait Drawing Challenge” to see how much improvement he could make in drawing faces, and most recently, and fun, “Let’s Learn Quantum Mechanics.” So in this episode we discuss these challenges and other intellectual feats and what drives Scott, and of course a deep dive into his new book, which has some amazing folks saying some impressive things: James Clear of Atomic Habits fame, who also wrote the Foreword to your book, said “Ultralearning is a fascinating and inspiring read. Scott has compiled a goldmine of actionable strategies for learning anything faster.” Chris Guillebeau said: “This book is an invaluable tool to help you master complicated skills in a short period of time. Read Ultralearning and level up your life!” Cal Newport said “Ultralearning is like a superpower in our competitive economy. Read this book! It will change your life.” Derek Sivers said “A truly great book about learning. Riveting, useful, practical, and applicable to anyone ready to learn something at their own pace. Ultralearning shows you exactly how to learn better than you thought possible.” Scott discusses some of the great case studies in the book along with his own personal challenges, including those of Eric Barone, Tristan de Montebello, and Nigel Richards. His last chapter includes the wonderful story of Judit Polgar and Gary Kasparov. Scott lives his life in full, and helps others to do so as well with his book and his website’s blog and resources, which are linked in our show notes.

"BLAST FROM THE PAST" REMASTERED SPECIAL EDITION: Special Guest Steve Spooner.Original Broadcast Date: 6/23/2014.Join Joel Ayala Ayapana, Host of Quantum Mindfulness Radio, for another intriguing and fun-filled ride as he guides you in exploration to the Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon, which will be the topic of main focus for this episode. The Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon refers to a sudden spontaneous and mysterious leap of consciousness, achieved when "critical mass" is reached..The idea of the Hundredth Monkey or the so-called Law of Critical Mass (According to Quantum Theory) is a phenomenon which comes from the research of Dr. Lyall Watson from his 1979 book: Lifetide. His book speaks in reference to several studies done on Japanese Macaques in the 1960's by several primatologists. Watson allegedly purports that the scientists were reluctant to publish the whole story for fear of ridicule..Now... this is how the story goes (according to Watson):.In the autumn of that ground-breaking year when the realization of the Hundredth Monkey was discovered, an unspecified number of monkeys on Koshima were observed washing sweet potatoes along the shores of the sea (as a result from the excessive amounts of unappealing sand and dirt that can often collect upon the surface of these potatoes fed to the Macaques)... when something extraordinary was witnessed before the very eyes of many of these researchers. The story begins when one monkey was observed performing this act or behavior with the mere intentions of increasing the appeal and taste of this growing monkey delicacy... and then another... then another Macaque was observed portraying this same trait. They intriguingly found that when, somewhere around after the hundredth monkey or Macaque was observed washing, in parallel, these sweetened potatoes for which this population of primates were increasing in affinity to its liking, groups of other Macaques from other islands and even to the many groups found within the mainland of Japan were observed washing these sweet potatoes in tandem. And as I may emphasis even further, the islands from where these specified groups of primates predominately thrived, are several hundreds of miles apart. This learned trait seemingly could have never been communicated, in the physical form of things, between these groups..My special guest with whom I will be conversing with, concerning this subject matter for this night's show, will be Steve Spooner, a wonderful and inspiring dear friend, healer, awakener, dear Worker of the Light, Shaman, and one (from among) the many hand chosen "Sharing" coordinators of the Drunvalo Melchizidek's School of Remembering....In the School of Remembering, Steve teaches the mystery school elements of Sacred Geometry, the Flower of Life, the Merkaba and the Sacred Space of the Heart. He embraces the essence of connecting with Mother Earth, Father Sky, and all our Relationships with Humanity (but within his case... with humor... and with LOVE) in "Remembering" who we really are and what we are truly (capable) of completing within this life..I met Steve when I was personally called (by Spirit) and by the Calling Frequencies and Energies of the 1111... to travel and to travail the distance out to Sedona, Arizona... (back in 2011) for the highly anticipated 11/11/11 Gaia & Tribe Conference... where many Motivational speakers... healers... and Spiritualists from all over the globe... had come to gather (in retreat)..This night's show will also conclude with one of the most revitalizing and upcoming artists and musicians within the high-octane and entertaining world of Dubstep... with his inspirational track and single: CREATION by Agent 11.Ohio native "Agent 11" has been bringing dancefloors to their knees for years. This week we're thrilled to welcome to The Armory, DJ Justin Johnson of San Francisco. One of the hardest working men in the business, Johnson runs four labels including Barely Legal Records. While Johnson is an accomplished DJ in his own right, he is respected by artists around the globe and has helped us line up some serious talent for the Armory Podcast, which we very much appreciate (thank you, Justin!). Now press play and get down! Justin Johnson is a DJ and producer from the San Francisco Bay Area spinning Breaks, House, and Tech House. He also operates Cable Recordings, Barely Legal Records, Cylon Dub Receptor, and Southern Vice Recordings. With a discography of more than forty tracks, he has worked with John Selway, Johnny Dangerously, and Johan Afterglow, as well as remixes for iiO, DJ Punk-Roc, Nigel Richards, Velcro City Records, Beyond Zilla, and Quartz Lock. As a kid, he was raised on heavy doses of Blues, Jazz, and Funk, and when the New Wave scene started he became mesmerized by the sounds of the synthesizers, staying up late listening to the radio just hoping to hear Gary Numan or Afrika Bambaata. In high school he started to link up with other DJs, landed his own radio show on KSRH (San Rafael, CA), and honed his skills with good friend Mr. E and other local DJs. During his college years he would spend hours mixing with John Howard and going to the underground events in the SF Bay Area. In 1994 he made a move to New York City and within a year of being in the north east, his shoulder was tapped by Scotty Marz, the founding father of Kingsize USA promotions, to become part of the crew. One year later he had built up such a solid reputation that he was recruited by Scott Richmond and Jonathan Kadish (aka Mr. Kleen) to work at the world famous Satellite Records in New York City. Justin quickly made a massive impact in the store and became the Breaks buyer and the stock manager for all three stores (Boston, NYC, Atlanta). Satellite offered the opportunity to not only be on the cutting edge of new sounds and producers, but also to be able to help cultivate the sounds of other DJs like Danny Tenaglia, DJ Icey, Adam Freeland, DJ Dan, Dave Dresden, Thomas Bangalter, Todd Terry, and just about any other taste-maker in the industry. After years of consistently rocking the north east in renowned venues like The Limelight, The Tunnel, The Roxy, Roseland Ballroom, and Irving Plaza, he became known as the “King of Breaks” in NYC, and an appearance at a massive NYC festival (6th Element) was so impressive that it even caught the ears of The New York Times. Justin always brings the futuristic funk with him and you can hear his influences from the old school to the latest innovators - from Kraftwerk, King Tubby, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, John Coltrane, Giorgio Moroder, Gino Soccio, and all the way up to Bass Bin Twins, King Yoof, Lee Coombs, The Freestylers, Badboe, Olav Basoski, Maceo Plex, and Carl Cox. His passion for DJing is still as strong now as it was when he started more than twenty-five years ago, and he is still on the radio running his internet show called ‘Techtonic Funk Brigade ‘on NSB Radio (1st and 3rd Fridays 5pm-7pm PST). In keeping with tradition, we have captured another live set from Nigel Richards. This one takes place in the dark booming back room of The Works, downtown Detroit. Nigel mixed a selection by such artists as: Oliver Huntemann, Green Velvet, Adam Beyer, Modfunk, Guy Gerber, Steve Lawler and others. Then, for a little unique thrill, he added Duran Duran and Michael Jackson (acapella) to the mix. ENJOY THE JOURNEY, as we always say. There is a small underground party in Chinatown, Philly, that happens once a month on a Friday. It's a small bar above a business and below a massage parlour. ;) Futurism is the name of the party and it's actually quite fun! Nigel went back to his techno roots here with punchy jams and some quick mixes. Tracks by the following: Adam Beyer, Josh Wink, Rekorder, Samuel Session, Kiko, Nigel Richards aka Mr. Funkysh#t, Abe Duque, James Holden, Anthony Rother, and even Mike Inc. A fun journey including acid, electro, dark tribal and more...

This mix is in the archives of live mixes gathered from gigs along the way, recorded live in Minneapolis in a club we can't seem to get Nigel to remember the name of. Regardless, it's a pumping mix with a variety from Depeche Mode to Vitalic with some acid house between. It's live and raw.... gritty like you are on the dancefloor bumping into the turntables yourselves!
