The conversation highlights the importance of not only representation but also the behavior and mindset of individuals within organizations, emphasizing the need for fairness and addressing power imbalances. This episode provides valuable insights for nonprofit leaders seeking to cultivate more equitable and inclusive organizations, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection, systemic change, and embracing humanity in leadership.   Episode highlights: Defining DEI [00:8:08] Defining DEI: The conversation begins with an exploration of what diversity, equity, and inclusion mean to each participant and how their understanding has evolved over time. He became interested in leadership and creating inclusive cultures at a young age, growing up in an area that had substantive racial, ethnic, and socio-economic diversity, and as the son of an immigrant in a multiracial family. Coming from a predominantly working class neighborhood, he also saw the impact any leader can have at all levels of society and particularly the effects leaders have on those who are most marginalized. These life experiences inform his philosophy that good leadership  is equitable leadership. Tip has worked with dozens of organizations ranging from community based nonprofits to organizations with international reach including the Federal Aviation Administration, Annie E. Casey Foundation, and The Nature Conservancy. He has taught as an adjunct faculty member for ten years in Organization Development and DEI programs at American University and Georgetown University. Jamie Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: How the B Corp community has helped Traditional Medicinals advance its sustainability efforts The FairWild Certification Transitioning to biodegradable packaging Challenges and processes for quantifying scope 3 emissions Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Jamie's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers?  Understanding communication skills and influence skills really matter. What I found, especially working in large companies, is that most leaders are not ill-intentioned, but they may be preoccupied and they may be out of their depth on some of these sustainability topics. So the more you can meet them where they are, think about the scope of responsibility they have as well as their personal values and the company values, and then help move them in the direction of the change that you want to see, the easier it will be for everyone.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability?  This might be specific to me, but I think we're probably seeing it across the board as hiring managers, is that environmental courses and topics are much more prevalent today than they were when we were in school. What I find now is that many people have degrees or minors in environmental sustainability. They may be working in marketing or R&D or procurement, but they have a real passion for environmental sustainability. We used to have to convince people, we had to do a lot of selling internally to get our initiatives bumped to the top of the priority list. Now we have ready allies across the organization who are really agitating for change. I think that's great, but it does require us as sustainability leaders to change our skills from leading from the front to coordinating and collaborating across departments. But I'm excited to see how many people have skill and passion.  What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read?  I love The Shareholder Value Myth by Lynn Stout. We can't talk about the future health of the planet without talking about the way that our capital markets work. There's a real case to be made for long-term thinking, and I think she does a really good job discussing that.  What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work?  The Fair Wild Foundation. If you care about conservation or plants, it's a great one to learn from. They produce really great, thought leadership pieces. For those in the food industry, we use a tool called HowGood that allows us to understand the environmental footprint and impact of our products. That helps us when we're innovating as well. We want to deliver specific impact to our consumers, but if we can do that in a lower environmentally impactful way, that's great. So HowGood is another great tool. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Traditional Medicinals? Our website is https://www.traditionalmedicinals.com/. If you go to the impact section, you can find our impact report. You can find lots of stories about what we're doing in the world and our approach to business, and I hope you enjoy it. I think it's a beautiful site. It also teaches a lot about plants.

Dannelle speaks with occupational therapist, Emilia Bourland. In this episode, Emilia shares how we can reframe our approach to using mobility aides as tools of support and independence and how care partners should communicate needs and concerns for our own health and safety. Dannelle and Emilia discuss the importance of acknowledging our loved one's fear of loss of independence and why support systems are essential to gaining the most effective tools and information as a caregiver. “The way might not look like we think it should look or like it used to look, but when we open up our mind to the possibilities, when we stay open-minded as to how something can happen, it's limitless.” - Emilia Bourland Timestamps03:31 Emilia's three core values and how they connect to occupational therapy and caregiving 07:43 Educating people on caregiving by explaining the “how” and the “why” 10:07 How occupational therapists help with safety 13:21 An example of how an adaptation can help with transfers 18:46 Affordable places to buy durable medical equipment 21:24 How home health assessments can help improve accessibility 24:26 Paying for home health assessments with an occupational therapist 28:02 How to help loved ones adjust to integrating mobility aides 32:28 Examples of simple, inexpensive home modifications that will make life easier 37:02 Amelia's passions outside of caregiving Takeaway Learnings1. Balancing safety with support for our care partner's independence can be so challenging. Using mobility devices, adaptive equipment, and home modifications can help create a care environment that reduces risk of injury for both care partners, while also empowering more self-reliance in those we care for. 2. When we have the right information, we're empowered to make better decisions. The disconnect between educational resources and the people who need them most is frustrating, but most importantly know that they exist, and may require a little digging to find what works. It may also be helpful to enlist a professional, or provide additional information like the Home Modification Information Network, which has been developed with support from the Administration for Community Living. On their site, you can find educational materials, programs, policies, funding, and more resources by state. 3. If the person we care for is in medical crisis or rehabilitation, that's an optimal time to talk with an occupational therapist or other appropriate care specialist to do a home safety assessment. Actionable Tips1. Emilia talks about the difference our approach can make to help reframe how loved ones can understandably feel about using mobility aides. The default feeling is often that using a device like a walker or lift aid represents a taking away or loss of independence. When we're having these conversations, taking time to first think about how we present choices and their benefits can be helpful – like, “I want to support you in doing what you can for yourself for as long as possible”. So, we're addressing the fear and grief around loss of independence along with a potential help. 2. For those of us who provide educational support, training, or instruction, as care professionals, it's important we're clear about our role – which is not about trying to fix a single specific problem or situation, but rather asking ourselves, “What information can I share to help care partners make more informed decisions now and in future?” This is empowerment. 3. We need to take our physical strain and limitations seriously. Ask yourself, your support group, or consult with a professional about what kind of device aids, tools, or other assistance can help ease the strain of transfers or other daily caregiving activities. About Emilia BourlandEmilia Bourland, OTR, ECHM is the president and founder of Higher Standards Caregiver Training, as well as co-founder of The Purpose Project. She has been an occupational therapist for over 10 years, working in adult settings ranging from home health to the ICU, and everywhere in between. Emilia has worked as adjunct faculty at Texas Woman's University, teaching masters level occupational therapy students both hands on clinical skills and advanced professional reasoning. She has taught safe handling and care skills to nurses, caregivers, and clients/patients since the start of her career as an occupational therapist, providing direct training to thousands of people, in addition to logging tens of thousands of hours in her own clinical practice. Emilia holds her master's degree in occupational therapy from Texas Woman's University and her Executive Certificate in Home Modification from the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California. She is nationally registered with the National Board of Certification of Occupational Therapists and is licensed as an occupational therapist in the state of Texas. Years ago I was at a leadership conference where the speaker asked if everyone in a position of leadership would raise their hands. Later I thought, everyone should have raised their hands. Leadership begins in how we lead ourselves.  Additionally, the lowest level of leadership is for those who lead by their “title. “   Many of the issues leaders face stems from not operating in a way that is congruent with the values they hold. It impacts their ability to lead in a credible way.   In this episode I invited Ted Kulawiak to come back on the show for a second time to talk about some chapters in his new book, “21 Lessons Learned in Leadership” on the ethics and morals of leadership. Our goal was to get you, as a leader, to think about HOW you lead and to challenge yourself to get more from yourself and others so we can all make a positive impact.   What You'll Learn in This Episode:   The tenants of true, actionable leadership Leadership lessons from Gettysburg The place that core values has in your leadership The definition of ethical sales and why it matters Building trust and influence by supporting individual goals A common way leaders compromise relationships What it really means to have someone's back The key to balancing people and profit A compassionate, humanistic approach to leadership during difficult times The big change in how consumers are making decisions about which organizations to support and how that relates to leadership Putting the mental health of your team and your own mental health first The trap many people in corporate America fall into that leads to burnout     Resources:   Book- The Speed of Trust https://tedkaye55.wixsite.com/21lessonslearned https://www.linkedin.com/in/ted-kulawiak-695a25180/ https://www.amazon.com/21-Lessons-Learned-Sales-Management/dp/164111827X   Bio:   Ted Kulawiak holds a BS in journalism from Northern Illinois University, and an MBA from the Keller Graduate School of Management. After teaching graduate level classes in sales and advertising management for six years at Keller, Ted earned an Executive Certificate in Leadership and Management from the University of Notre Dame. He held senior sales leadership and training positions in the advertising and media sales industry, selling television, direct mail, outdoor, and newspaper advertising space over the course of 25 years, the majority of which he spent working for the 3M Company in their national advertising division.   Post advertising career, Ted transitioned to higher education and enjoyed an 18-year career in executive leadership positions, and now serves as the president of Ted Kaye Sales Management Training LLC based in Pflugerville, (Austin) Texas. Previously he was the vice president of enrollment at Westminster College in Missouri, held the same title at Bisk Education, an online program management company in Florida, and also at DeVry, Inc., in Illinois as he led the online admissions efforts for DeVry University, Keller Graduate School of Management, and Chamberlain College of Nursing.  He is the author of “21 Lessons Learned in Sales Management”, and expects his second book, “21 Lessons Learned in Leadership” to be published later this year.

FFWW honors the service of women veterans by empowering their future through financial assistance, childcare assistance and professional development.  If you want to learn more about Foundation for Women Warriors and how to get involved head to their website foundationforwomenwarriors.org In this episode we covered all of Naomi’s career. She served in the Army and joined via ROTC which she learned about while she was in college. It allowed her to graduate debt free and she headed into active duty in 1994. She moved around the country and the world. Serving overseas in Japan and Kuwait. She was given the opportunity to get her masters and then work at West Point, which later led to her getting her PhD with a three year follow on to teach at West Point. She was married to another service member for a brief period and they found dual military challenging as they were not able to be stationed together. They had a daughter and because he was not with them, she was essentially as single parent. When she deployed her ex-husband was already deployed and her best friend took in her daughter and her daughter remembers spending a year with her cousins and had the support she needed. She is grateful her daughter was so young and didn’t notice that her mom was gone. Lastly, we covered her transition out the of the military. She was remarried and her husband needed to be in a big city for his remote job. Her daughter was in high school and didn’t want to transfer schools again. So, they wanted to stay in the DC area. With two years of planning and focusing on discovering herself and finding the right job, not just a job she was able to make a successful transition out of the military. She has so much advice for those looking to join the military or for those planning to leave the military behind. Bio: Naomi Mercer (she/her, they/them) is Senior Vice President, Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion for the American Bankers Association. She recently transitioned from military career where she served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Philosophy at the United States Military Academy and in the Pentagon running the Army’s gender integration and religious accommodation programs. Climate Communication experts Blair Bazdarich from the San Francisco Zoo and Hannah Pickard at Boston's New England Aquarium share proven insider tips about effective communication strategies. They are both leaders at NNOCCI, the National Network of Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation. They train aquarium and zoo professionals how to speak about climate change. NNOCCI is a network of individuals and organizations in informal education, the social sciences, and climate sciences. They are currently working in 170 institutions in 38 states. NNOCCI members reach over 190 million people each year.   In this episode Hannah and Blair share the techniques they have been using, including a “values-first” approach. Through NNOCCI’s research, they identified two motivating values that prove highly effective in opening up conversations with members of the public. The first value is Protection—we feel a strong need to protect the people and places we love. And the second is Responsible Management. We value solving problems earlier before they become too big.    In addition, NNOCCI advises climate communicators to to speak less about the mechanisms leading to climate change and its effects. Instead they encourage us to focus our conversations on solutions. Hannah and Blair share how to lead the conversation to a place of hopeful engagement. Providing achievable, large scale solutions coupled with a clear vision of the benefits these solutions will have on our communities and familes is an extremely powerful combination. It will motivate people to believe, dream, and act.    Blair Bazdarich has spent the past 20 years becoming an expert in science communication, but she didn't realize that's what she was doing until recently. Through volunteering, performing, shoveling poop, learning new languages, teaching, painting, and advocating for endangered species, she has found her niche in the science community. In her current position as Education & Engagement Manager at the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, she runs the ZooMobile program, which brings animals to schools throughout the Bay Area, and several teen volunteer programs, where she mentors high school students in conservation and education. Blair is also an active member of the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation (NNOCCI), and serves in the Governing Council, working to unify the national narrative and action plan on climate change. In her spare time, she is the resident "Zoologist" on the podcast This Week in Science, or TWIS.   Hannah Pickard is Program Manager for the NNOCCI and is responsible for network management and operations. Hannah has led NNOCCI’s efforts on curriculum development, facilitator training, and alumni support since 2010.  She has a background in education program development, implementation and evaluation for families, schools, and community groups.  She holds a B.A. in studio art and Italian from Connecticut College and an Executive Certificate in Social Impact Strategy from the University of Pennsylvania.  She also has training in evaluation from Lesley University and in conservation psychology from Antioch University.   Hear these conversations to gain value lessons from leaders in the field of climate communication.      The Art House Sometimes we cannot easily imagine the impacts legislation and policy can make. Andrews Smalls from City Lab wrote the article, What American Cities Looked like Before the Environmental Protection Agency Was Created. "Since 1970, the agency has reduced the six most common air pollutants by more than 50 percent, reduced air toxins from large industrial sources by almost 70 percent, and eliminated the use of ozone-depleting chemicals. And this progress was accomplished even as the country’s GDP tripled, energy consumption increased by 50 percent, and vehicle use nearly doubled." Of course we have still have work to do. We need to reduce localized pollution and heat-trapping greenhouse gases globally. So how do we build the political will so that the public clamors for legislation and policy that will change how we get and use energy? We need to communicate to the public what success looks like. Envisioning success in our climate work though requires imagination.  To help us with this task Sean Dague, the group leader for the Mid-Hudson South chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby, leads us through a powerful exercise. He asks us, What does a decarbonized world look like? What does it smell like? What does it sound like?  Once you hear Sean’s vision of a successful future, we invite you to continue the exercise. Try some creative writing. Write a short story or a letter from the future about what you see, smell, and hear.  Maybe create visual art, a drawing or painting. If you can’t draw or paint, get images from magazines and on-line then create a collage. Write a song, create a map, choreograph a dance. Use art to capture a vision of a decarbonized world. Even if you do not see yourself as an artsy person, just try it.  Towards the end of his life, writer Kurt Vonnegut would say, "Everyone should practice art because art enlarges the soul."  PLEASE feel free to share your art with our host, Peterson Toscano, and let him know if I can share it with listeners, on the podcast, Facebook, and Twitter.  If you have art from this exercise to share or if you have idea for the Art House, feel free to contact Peterson at radio@citizensclimate.org. Puzzler   Joining us to answer last month’s question about climate adaptation is Doug Parsons, the host of the America Adapts podcast.    New Puzzler Question You just spoke to a group of middle school students about your climate change work. During the Q&A a student named Victor says, “I am freaking out because of all the bad stuff I am seeing and it seems like it is just getting worse and worse. I really do not see the point of even trying anymore. I think we are too far gone. What difference does this make?”  Lots of people young and old feel the same way. So how do you respond to Victor? How can you validate his fears while also giving him reasons to hope and pursue solutions.   Send us your answers. Leave your name, contact info, and where you are from.
