Wow, what a week for those who love cycling tech!If four new dropbar groupsets from SRAM weren't enough, then Shimano certainly fills that glass with its sudden release of XT and Deore Di2. Join Escape's Dave Rome, Suvi Loponen and Alex Hunt as they discuss what's new and some things to be aware of.Meanwhile, the UCI released some upcoming rule changes that have many riders and cycling businesses upset. The geeks discuss why some of these rulings have been blown out of proportion, and why one of them is arguably just wrong.Of course, there are a couple of new bikes (Cervelo and Orbea) to discuss, and CeramicSpeed has released its first do-it-yourself hot melt wax which promises a whole lot of distance. As always, members of Escape Collective have access to the Ask a Wrench segment at the end of the episode. Here, Dave Rome is joined by pro race mechanic Brad Copeland to answer a number of geeky questions, including a trick for keeping valve nuts in place without over-tightening them, our thoughts on the best cone wrenches, mixing-and-matching chainring sizes on SRAM, a rear shock that's fussy to inflate, and a Shimano front derailleur that's hard to shift.Enjoy!Time Stamps:2:15 - Explaining the UCI's Handlebar width ruling and specifically where it's wrong17:00 - SRAM's new Force and Rival AXS27:30 - Shimano's new XT and Deore wireless shifting36:30 - Cervelo's new Aspero 543:45 - Orbea's Terra gravel bike gets overhauled47:00 - CeramicSpeed's new long-lasting hot melt wax52:00 - Ask a Wrench (Member-only!)55:00 - A tip for tubeless valve nuts in place58:30 - A deep dive and our top suggestions for good cone wrenches1:10:00 - Mixing-and-matching chainring sizes with SRAM AXS1:15:00 - Rear shock inflation woes and shock pumps1:21:00 - Fixing Shimano Ultegra front derailleur that's hard to shift

Seven years have passed since we last saw an updated version of Shimano's flagship mountain bike group. Assuming you weren't holding your breath, and as a result are still with us, then today is the day of the update.Yes, new XTR Di2 M9200 is here. It represents Shimano's delayed entry into true wireless shifting, and brings with it a number of other interesting developments (a new brake oil, anyone?).In this episode, Escape Collective's Dave Rome and Alex Hunt sit down with Shimano North America's MTB Product Manager, Nick Murdick. The North American offices of Shimano have been playing an increasingly significant role in the development and design of Shimano's next generation parts, and Nick has been at the centre of that for the new XTR.This episode speaks candidly with Murdick about the new group, some challenges faced, some decisions behind the details, and a few teases of what may still be to come. Alex and Dave wrap up at the end with a few quick thoughts. Meanwhile, you'll need to visit our article on Escape Collective to find all the nuanced details and ride impressions of the new XTR product range.A chunk of this episode (along with our written report) is free for all to enjoy and learn from. However, as Escape is wholly member-funded (which means this isn't sponsored or paid content), you will need to be a member of Escape Collective in order to hear it all.
Our necks are hurting from the whiplash of information regarding what tyres are actually fastest off-road. Ronan teases a fresh discussion he had about optimising one sponsored rider for Unbound and some surprising lessons that came from that. It's a topic that continues to fascinate, especially given some of the world's best cross-country mountain bikers have been racing Short Track on 50 mm gravel tyres. In addition to that, you'll hear Dave Rome, Alex Hunt, and Ronan McLaughlin explain why none of them are currently choosing to use 3D-printed saddles. There's a PSA for anyone with wireless shifting, and of course, there's new stuff to talk about, too.As usual, members also get our Ask a Wrench segment, which this week sees Dave Rome and pro race mechanic Brad Copeland answer a handful of questions, including: how keep 11-speed shifting running long-term, understanding bike handling, and best practises for travelling with new SRAM Full Mount derailleurs (Transmission and XPLR). Steady Energy is developing the LDR-50 small modular reactor with the initial goal of decarbonising district heating systems. The CEO of the Finnish company, Tommi Nyman, explains why the decision to focus on heat rather than electricity was taken. The company was spun out of VTT, Finland's national research lab, and was prompted by its researchers noting that 10% of CO2 emissions come from heating water or steam to 150C and thinking "why not build something simple that would only cover low temperature heat markets". "In the context of the climate crisis, nuclear is a very good option, but the problem has been getting projects economically sound so that nuclear can be utilised without large subsidies. We know that the most economical way to use nuclear is just to generate thermal energy without using the heat to create electricity," he tells host Alex Hunt. Nyman added that simplicity has been key to their design, "by only producing heat you can reduce the amount of equipment in a nuclear power plant by 50%". The cost of energy they are aiming at is below EUR40 per MWh, depending on how the utility wants to operate it and the aim is to have a first plant delivered in 2030.Also in this episode World Nuclear News's Claire Maden reports on events in India, South Africa and uranium developments in the USA and Australia.Key links to find out more:World Nuclear NewsFinnish municipal decision-makers favourable to SMRsIndia's NTPC confirms plans for nuclear subsidiarySouth Africa pauses nuclear procurement processEmail newsletter:Sign up to the World Nuclear News daily or weekly news round-upsContact info:alex.hunt@world-nuclear.orgEpisode credit: Presenter Alex Hunt. Professor Tim Tinsley prefers not to use the label of nuclear waste, instead referring to "legacy material". And it's not hard to see why, given the projects currently taking place to extract radionuclides from the material for use in pioneering treatments for cancer. It is also providing a new source of power and heat for spacecraft.Tinsley, Professor of Space Nuclear Power at the University of Leicester and Account Director for Space and Radioisotopes at the National Nuclear Laboratory in the UK, joins host Alex Hunt to give details on the life-saving and space-exploring projects and explains what value there is hidden within what has long just been seen as a problem. With the promising early stage clinical trials, and the plans to provide power for a mission to Mars in 2028, the newly discovered value in the legacy material is one of the factors which may be taken into account in plans for the safe longterm disposal of the material. There could yet be future discoveries that more of the material could become valuable in the years ahead, so, suggests Tinsley, being able to dispose of the material in a form that it is retrievable at minimal cost might be a good idea. Also this month, there is a report on the gathering of leaders and senior government representatives at the first-of-its-kind Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels, including snippets of what the IAEA's Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and co-host Belgian PM Alexander de Croo had to say. Plus Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, French President Emmanuel Macron and COP29 host Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. It was in 2003 that World Nuclear University was founded by World Nuclear Association, the International Atomic Energy Agency, World Association of Nuclear Operators and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, with a mission to provide comprehensive leadership, communications and technical training to support the next generation of nuclear leaders. As it marks its 20th birthday, host Alex Hunt is joined by World Nuclear University (WNU) director Isis Leslie to learn more about its work and also its exciting plans for the future. We also hear first-hand what the WNU experience is like from Estiner Katengeza, one of the fellows at this year's Summer Institute, which was held in Japan. In the World Nuclear News round-up Claire Maden reports on developments in Niger and considers the impact on the uranium sector, Warwick Pipe reports on the start of the discharge of treated water from Fukushima and there is also a report on the good news out of the USA from Vogtle. The annual World Nuclear Performance Report has all the statistics and numbers anyone interested in the nuclear energy sector could possibly want. It breaks down the performance of reactors across the world by type, by age and by country. The author behind it is World Nuclear Association's Jonathan Cobb, who joins us to discuss this year's findings. As well as explaining the reason why some parts of the world saw a small decline in nuclear energy output in 2022, he has a bundle of fascinating stats - including those which suggest the oldest reactors, ie over 50 years old, are more than matching the performance of the newer and younger ones. In the July World Nuclear News round-up Claire Maden covers a bundle of good news stories from Canada, Warwick Pipe reports on developments in France and Poland, while host Alex Hunt hears from UK Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Grant Shapps as he launched Great British Nuclear, the arms-length organisation intended to help the country hit its target of 24 GW of nuclear by 2050. The French nuclear giant EDF and its partners have been working on their Nuward small nuclear reactor and have now spun the operation into a subsidiary company. Renaud Crassous, president of Nuward joins us to discuss its plans and timelines, and explains why the decision to set up a subsidiary company was taken.During a wide-ranging interview Crassous talks about the pioneering early design regulatory review being jointly carried out by regulators in three countries, and explains why the aim is for Nuward to be 'Europe's SMR' rather than just a French one.April has been a busy month for World Nuclear News's Warwick Pipe and Claire Maden who join host Alex Hunt to report on Germany exiting the nuclear energy scene as its last three nuclear reactors were shut down in the middle of the month. Plus, on a brighter note, they also explain the significance just a few days later of a ceremony held to inaugurate the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, as Turkey officially joined the league of nations with nuclear energy capacity. The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency released a report in March which it described as the first publicly available international data on gender balance in the nuclear sector. Claire Maden reports on the report's key findings (that there's still a long way to go to boost female representation in the sector) and also on what NEA Director General William D Magwood IV and Fiona Rayment, chair of the NEA's Gender Balance Task Group had to say about the situation. The need to encourage more women into the nuclear sector is an issue returned to in an interview with Corhyn Parr, CEO of Nuclear Waste Services, who says her own experience has shown it is a great career choice. She also tells host Alex Hunt that with the expansion of nuclear in the coming years and the need to hit net zero targets, the sector needs to be able to attract and welcome the most talented people from across society.Parr also discusses progress made on the UK's plans for a Geological Disposal Facility. The aim is to narrow the current shortlisted areas down to two options by 2026, with the longer-term timescale looking at an operating start in 2050. The European Union's member states have been split over the position of nuclear energy within its sustainability framework and green taxonomy. Those differences are continuing with the EU's Net Zero Industry Act - Andrei Goicea, policy director for Nucleareurope, explains what the act is, what place nuclear has in it at the moment, and what happens next. Hi, I'm Priscilla McKinney, CEO and Momma Bird here at Little Bird Marketing and I'm a St. Patrick's Day birthday! Everyone wants to party on my birthday and have fun. I am a fun person - very outgoing and funny (if you agree, please call one of my kids and let them know). But people often think I am a people person. I'm really not. I'm a “my kind of people” person. What I mean by that is I like people who are overtly helpful, bring energy into the room, give without thinking of getting and don't take themselves too seriously. I love this industry and have met so many colleagues who have become friends - like really good friends. I had a lot of friends before I got into this industry, but I made room for more. Do you see how much fun I'm having and want to be a part of it? Good news! In this episode I scrap the rules, call my bestie, Sarah Kotva and gossip about people in the industry. It's all good and you'll have a great time. So grab a glass of wine with us and let us introduce you to people you HAVE TO KNOW in market research. Then, go forth and connect with them online. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll be in on all the jokes! Let's do this! Brandon Munro, CEO of Bannerman Energy, joins us to consider the impact on the uranium and wider nuclear sector of the Russia-Ukraine war as it continues into a second year. Munro sees a bright future for the uranium sector and also talks about the prospects for an expansion of nuclear in Africa and why he sees the Cameco-Westinghouse deal as a good thing, and one which gives more backing for the idea of nuclear energy being part of green taxonomies. And what about those people who are opposed to nuclear energy? Is it possible to change minds? Munro, who has around 20,000 followers on Twitter (@brandon_munro) says that conversations are key - in his experience once people know the facts they tend to be in favour.Never before has one country's military occupied another country's nuclear power plants. What can be done to improve the process of getting approval for new nuclear in different countries? If a reactor, for example a small modular reactor, is approved in one country, can that help to speed up the process in a different country? Jay Wileman is president and CEO of GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy so is well placed to outline what the issues are for companies such as his, which is currently in the process of getting approvals from multiple countries for the BWRX-300 SMR. Wileman is a key figure in World Nuclear Association's Cooperation in Reactor Design Evaluation and Licencing Group, better known as the CORDEL working group, which focuses on the benefits and means of achieving a worldwide convergence of reactor safety standards and approaches to licensing reactor designs. Doing so would have big cost savings and allow much faster adoption of nuclear energy in different countries. Joint CORDEL programme leader, Ronan Tanguy, joins us to explain how the group works, and sets out some specific goals. It has been a busy start to the year and World Nuclear News's Warwick Pipe and Claire Maden join host Alex Hunt to discuss the positive nuclear policy changes in countries stretching from Sweden to South Korea, and also outline expectations of as many as 10 reactor start-ups scheduled for 2023. In the late 90s, the little town of Tulia, Texas, was up to its ass in drugs. At least, that's what the local sheriff thought. So he hired a guy named Tom Coleman to work as an undercover narcotics agent. What Tom discovered was truly unbelievable. As it turned out, the little town of approximately 5,000 people was home to *at least* 46 drug dealers. On top of that, the drug dealers in this economically depressed community dealt oodles of powder cocaine! Oh, and guess what?? Even though Tulia had a pretty small Black community, almost every single drug dealer that Tom encountered was Black! What are the odds??? Thanks to Tom's undercover work, authorities arrested 46 people on drug charges. But Tom hadn't worn a wire during these drug buys. Nothing was videoed or photographed. He hadn't even worked alongside another undercover agent. Hell, he hadn't even written his notes on a notepad. He'd written every pertinent detail about those drug deals on his leg. Then Brandi tells us about the murder of Ingrid Lyne. Indrid was a newly divorced, busy mom. She shared three daughters with her ex-husband, Phillip, and she worked as a nurse at Seattle's Swedish Medical Center. She'd just recently begun online dating. Through an app, she met John Charlton. John seemed like a nice enough guy, so Ingrid went out with him a few times. But on the morning after Ingrid went to a Seattle Mariners game with John, her friends and family couldn't get a hold of her. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. The EMEA Recruitment podcast was pleased to welcome Alex Hunt, Divisional Finance Director at IMI Hydronic Engineering in Switzerland. “Hire for talent, because that talent will get up to speed, even if they don't have experience right away; their talent and driven will make up for that.” Alex spoke to Paul Toms from his office, where he has been working flexibly during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's an approach that has worked well for IMI, which has seen high, “if not higher”, productivity levels than pre-pandemic. Alex reveals how his team has bridged the gap between remote working and having those impromptu chats in the office. It's something that he feels everyone is still learning to do, but has enjoyed the slightly more comical moments along the way. Despite his career success, Alex doesn't feel that his journey is complete. He's been loyal to companies during his career, but has always rotated roles and geographies, taking opportunities to develop himself. It's a mindset that came from moving a lot as a child and having a clear career path, defined through work with his mentors. Alongside his drive, Alex is humble enough to share the areas that are not his specialty. His advice for filling the gaps in his team? Hire for talent. He feels that an individual's talent and drive will make up for any lack of experience. Nevertheless, Alex reveals how making the wrong hire can have “huge reputational damage” and destroy trust within an organisation. At IMI, Alex has been working on the company's approach to business intelligence (BI) and data. Although he's looking for professionals who can leverage digital, he also believes that the business needs a strong foundation in controls and accounting. Being honest, open and frank with his team is the “only way to operate”, according to Alex, who also learnt from a mentor that a good sense of humour ensures you stay humble. We end the conversation with Alex's latest book recommendation. Although it pushes him into an “uncomfortable space”, he's planning ahead for the business of the future. In this episode, Ryan is joined by four of his WT colleagues: Dr. Alex Hunt, Dr. Tim Bowman, Dr. Ashley Pinkham, and Dr. Christopher Macaulay. Together we discuss Sarah Smarsh’s bestselling 2018 book Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth. Smarsh was born in 1980 and grew up poor in southern Kansas, the daughter of generations of wheat farmers on one side and generations of teenage mothers on the other. Her memoir, a National Book Award finalist, reads as a corrective to the mystification of the struggles of the rural working-class in America. It is also a rhetorically complex work of literature, written as a letter to the unconceived daughter Smarsh promises herself she will never deliver into a life of poverty. The episode begins with a discussion of the panelists’ initial reactions, both critical and celebratory, followed by a more focused discussion in which they draw on their unique perspectives as scholars of literary studies, history, developmental psychology, and political science. Over the course of the conversation, we talk about a range of issues, from where the book fits into the tradition of Great Plains literature, to what it says about rural America’s ambivalent relationship with the two-party political system, to how we might imagine using this book in a college classroom in the Texas Panhandle.

A Garage Hour Reload worth loading: Garage hour unhinged! Live from Hoptoberfest, the Garage Hour goons enjoy beer and pizza tasting at the Pizza Port's annual celebration, and roll around in a debate over Junior Seau's troubles and some prognostications regarding the Chargers' and Raiders' futures. Then, it's all about beer and guns and BMW owners who can't park, as well as the need to try a handgun on before purchase, plus pork, scary things roaming around at the Texas/Mexico border, chimps attacking the police, the upcoming Strong Ale Festival, why rainy weather makes San Diegans something something, and why the public can be a dick. At one point, the 'Port's full-time brewing sublord and sometime cohost Boston Rich goes after background hecklers (hey, we don't like skaters either), while additional cohosts David Lozeau and Alex Hunt help Hostus Maximus Justin Fort debate the flaws in every skater's childhood. Good times.
The Garage Hour goons join host Justin Fort to record their 2011 Christmas episode in Manzanita Brewing's tasting room. Friends of the show and regular cohosts come along for the fun, including Gun Dave from Fine Firearms, brewmaster Garry Pitman from Manzanita, plus Black Ryan, Garrett the Subie Guy and Dr. Nick Riviera (with Alex Hunt on the boards). It's a lively show, revelling in everything from beer, trucks, hunting, guns, LEGOs, tales of Christmas shopping and visits with the patrons of Manzanita's tasting room. Be sure to fast forward past the dead air at each ad break - it's a result of the live-to-tape format used to record a show on-site. jf
