Renée Green talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work.Green was born in 1959, in Cleveland, Ohio, and lives today between Somerville, Massachusetts, and New York. She brings together a wealth of cultural forms in complex and layered works that manifest as installations, video pieces and texts, among other media. Through what has been described as a “methodology of citation”, in which she overtly names and synthesises the language and forms of the disparate individuals she references, Renée reflects on the nature of ideas, on subjectivity and perception, on fiction and reality, and on memory—personal and collective. Just as she is generous in her allusions, so her art is an invitation to the viewer, to witness the connections she assembles, and help shape the works' meaning. She discusses how her work is concerned with “perception and sensation” and how drawing is a daily activity alongside reading and research. She reflects on her ongoing fascination with On Kawara and how her interest in particular artists “has to do with their physical location, the material aspects of what their existences might have been like, and then what kinds of questions emerge from those conditions”. She discusses the references in her work to the writing of Muriel Rukeyser and Laura Riding, and the friendship and dialogue she had with the film-maker Harun Farocki. Plus, she gives insight into life in the studio, and answers our usual questions, including the ultimate, “What is art for?”Renée Green: The Equator Has Moved, Dia Beacon, from 7 March and will be on long term view.
200 episodes! The Full PreFrontal Podcast has reached a significant milestone, and what does that mean to us? We're “in it for the long haul!” We find inspiration from Japanese artist, On Kawara, known for his work that illustrates the beauty, structure, and discipline in doing something over a long period of time with persistence and care. A milestone often not only marks the start of a new chapter, but also serves as a reward for past accomplishments, both big and small. Achievements are precious and timeless, and what better way to commemorate them than with precious guests. On today's podcast, Sucheta celebrates this 200th episode with her two sons who flip the script by taking a look back at the podcast's journey through time. Kunal Kamath is a graduate of Columbia University and an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company who lives and breathes executive function principles. In his spare time, Kunal loves the performing arts, crossword puzzles, and cultivating an indoor jungle of houseplants in his Brooklyn apartment. Rahil Kamath is also a graduate of Columbia University and is working toward his doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Rutgers University—he is a firm believer of the deep connection between executive function and psychological well-being. Rahil loves reading novels, is an avid soccer fan, and, much like his mom, enjoys nerding out on all things psychology.Sucheta would like to invite all listeners and followers of the podcast to join in on the celebrations as she continues to explore the mysteries of Executive Function while translating the art and science of self-regulated transformation for personal growth.About Host, Sucheta KamathSucheta Kamath, is an award-winning speech-language pathologist, a TEDx speaker, a celebrated community leader, and the founder and CEO of ExQ®.

Angela Westwater at 257 Bowery, 2020, photo by Alexei Hay Angela Westwater co-founded Sperone Westwater Fischer in 1975 with Italian art dealer Gian Enzo Sperone and German gallerist Konrad Fischer, opening a space at 142 Greene Street in SoHo, New York. (The gallery's name was changed to Sperone Westwater in 1982.) An additional space was later established at 121 Greene Street. The founders' original program showcased a European avant-garde alongside a core group of American artists to whom its founders were committed. Notable early exhibitions include a 1977 show of minimalist works by Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, and Sol Lewitt; seven of Bruce Nauman's seminal early shows; six early Gerhard Richter shows; two Cy Twombly exhibitions in 1982 and 1989; eleven Richard Long exhibitions; and the installation of one of Mario Merz's celebrated glass and neon igloos in 1979 -- part of the gallery's ongoing dedication to Arte Povera artists, including Alighiero Boetti. Other early historical exhibitions at the Greene Street space include a 1989 group show, "Early Conceptual Works," which featured the work of On Kawara, Bruce Nauman, Alighiero Boetti, and Joseph Kosuth, among others; a 1999 Fontana exhibition titled "Gold: Gothic Masters and Lucio Fontana"; and selected presentations of work by Piero Manzoni. From May 2002 to May 2010, the gallery was located at 415 West 13 Street, in a 10,000-square foot space in the Meatpacking District. In September 2010, Sperone Westwater inaugurated a new Foster + Partners designed building at 257 Bowery. Today, over 45 years after its conception, the gallery continues to exhibit an international roster of prominent artists working in a wide variety of media. Artists represented by Sperone Westwater include Bertozzi & Casoni, Joana Choumali, Kim Dingle, Shaunté Gates, Jitish Kallat, Guillermo Kuitca, Wolfgang Laib, Helmut Lang, Amy Lincoln, Richard Long, Emil Lukas, David Lynch, Heinz Mack, Mario Merz, Katy Moran, Malcolm Morley, Bruce Nauman, Otto Piene, Alexis Rockman, Susan Rothenberg, Tom Sachs, Peter Sacks, Andrew Sendor, and William Wegman. Past exhibitions, press, and artworks can be found on the gallery website. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Westwater received her BA from Smith College and her MA from New York University. She arrived in New York City in 1971 and landed her first job as a “gallery girl” at the John Weber Gallery at 420 West Broadway. From 1972 to 1975, she served as Managing Editor of Artforum magazine. In 1975, the same year the gallery was founded, Westwater was appointed to the Board of Trustees of The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, where she has served as President since 1980. The books mentioned in the interview are The Free World, Art and Thought in the Cold War by Louis Menand and A Life of Picasso, The Minotaur Years by John Richardson. Joseph Beuys, Herrmann Nitsch, On Kawara. South African artist Candice Breitz talks to Ben Luke about the artists, writers, musicians, film-makers and other figures that have influenced her and inspire her today, and the cultural experiences that have defined her life and work. Breitz is a film-maker whose work, mostly in the form of video installations, explores selfhood and identity, community, race and gender, and reflects on how mass media like television, cinema and music shape our response to them. Among much else, she discusses her recent work Digest, and how it was influenced by the Middle Eastern folk tales One Thousand and One Nights and On Kawara's Today series, or date paintings. She reflects on the power of Octavia Butler's speculative fiction and her complex response to the South African novelist JM Coetzee. She talks about her video works telling the stories of refugees and sex workers. And she discusses growing up in Apartheid South Africa and its bearing on her choice of subjects and media.

In questa puntata si parla di Marc Augé, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Maurizio Cattelan, Alighiero Boetti, Christian Boltanski, Gilbert & George, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Lawrence Wiener, Rikrit Tiravanija, Otto Muhl, Michelangelo Pistoletto, On Kawara, Fischli und Weiss, Banksy, Caravaggio, Claude Monet, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Tadao Ando, James Turrell, Charles Ray, Beatriz Colomina, Zadie Smith, Toni Morrison, Andrea Fraser, Sophie Calle, Carsten Höller, David Hockney, Massimo Gramellini, Walid Raad, Hans Haake, Naeem Mohaiemen, Kerry Hill, Geoffrey Bawa e Hauser & Wirth.
In questa puntata si parla di Bruce Nauman, John McCracken, Stanley Kubrick,Arthur C. Alistair Coleman was inspired by paintings of On Kawara on display at the Glenstone Museum in Potomac, MD. The artwork is a series of "date paintings" that were created on the days of the Apollo 11 launch, moon landing, and return journey. In this episode, the Abeo Quartet performs this new work by Coleman, Moonshot, commissioned by the Glenstone Museum. After the performance we talk about how the quartet put this piece together, new performance techniques required, and who would dare to go to space.

In this week’s episode of the ArtTactic Podcast, we’re joined by prominent California-based art collector, Dr Robert Shimshak. First, Robert shares his evolution as an art collector, acquiring along the way several works by Ed Ruscha, Sol Lewitt, On Kawara, Bruce Conner and others. Then, he offers advice for new collectors that he wished he had received when he first started collecting. Also, Robert gives his perspective on the current state of the art market and reveals some significant buying opportunities that currently exist. Lastly, having lived primarily on the west coast, Dr Shimshak compares the art scenes in San Francisco and Los Angeles to New York City.
Nina and Erik carefully document each moment as it passes during a conversation about the career of conceptual artist On Kawara.
Jan. 16, 2015. Recorded Podcast. In honor of the passing of On Kawara and the New Year 2015, Erik and Nina perform one hour's worth of subtitles from On Kawara's Today series.
This is a throwback to Kunstcapades Ep. 3 when Tantum makes a very good guess at the price of the Jeff Koons retrospective. We ask some very stupid questions to "the art world's patron Satan" Stefan Simchowitz, and pay our respects to On Kawara. Enjoy!
