Ep 214 RPM - Goal Setting That Works Motivation is great, ambition is wonderful, but how do we capture the energy and direct it consciously to get a result? I have spent years testing different goal-setting / organizational tools and recently was introduced to Tony Robbins' RPM goal-setting process. It is one of the best overall goal-setting methodologies I have ever seen and includes a key item that I have never seen in any other goal-setting tool (that is a game-changer). Today I break down what it is and how you can get started using it today! Ep 213 Change It Up (Notes on Habit Change) If you have ever tried to change a habit and failed time and time again, you know the frustration and resilience it takes to try again. This isn't just for habits. Think of all the areas in your life that you have tried again and again and keep getting the same result. Sometimes, it is not more effort, but a different approach we need to get a new result. Today, I share a recent example from my own life on how a small tweak has been giving me massively different results in a key area in my life, and how you can too. Ep 212 Borrow My Motivation Today Many days, when I first get up out of bed, the voices in my head are not positive. So what can we do when our internal dialogue isn't automatically positive? Borrow the motivation from someone else. Borrow someone else's words until you can create your own. For anyone who needs it today, I've got your motivation ready to go. Just throw in your earbuds and listen in. Its time! OVERCOMING GRADUATION SHOW NOTES: To subscribe to the podcast, search for "Overcoming Graduation" on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, or Google Play. Ep 211 Purpose to Your Pain A friend once asked me, "Brian, do you think everything happens for a reason?" I thought about it for a minute and said to her, "Honestly... I don't know. But I choose to believe it all does." In today's episode I share a perspective on the purpose to our brain. Developing the skill of reframing is one of the most consistent traits I have seen in high-performing people. Today, I share one way to apply that skill day-to-day. Enjoy! Ep 210 Gifts Wrapped in Sandpaper How do you respond when something terrible happens? Career troubles, relationship falling apart, health challenges, life has a way of keeping us guessing. What's important to realize is that we have a choice. We have a choice how we perceive the "negative" things that happen in our lives. In today's episode, I share one of the biggest lessons I learned from one of my mentors about the hardest lessons in life. What he taught me, changed my life and the way I perceived life's challenges forever. I hope you enjoy it! Ep 209 First Open Mat in 7 Years What have you been telling yourself you would start back up but years have passed? For me, martial arts have always been something I loved but it has been SEVEN YEARS since I got on the mat. It is interesting is when we look at what stops us from doing what we love. Ep 208 The Blessings in the Bad Days Sometimes when bad things happen, things we didn't plan for, it can seem like things are falling apart. When our perfectly organized plan doesn't come together, it may feel like we'll never be able to succeed at achieving our goals. But what if those bad days had a purpose? What if learning to manage the bad days was just as important as learning to celebrate the good? How can we do that when we feel stuck? In today's episode I will discuss some strategies to do all that and more! Tune in today to find out how. Ep 207 They're Counting on You What's very interesting is the dichotomy we face when we want to help people. We can simultaneously crave success, crave growth, crave to be making an impact, and at the same time be afraid to have people counting on us. We can go from celebrating a growing audience to resenting the audience for "expecting so much" of us. In today's episode, I will share one of the greatest secrets I have learned about this and how to get through some of the darkest times in our lives. Tune in today to find out more about it! Ep 206 Waiting for Motivation If you have ever found yourself waiting for motivation to strike before you get started, you know how I've been feeling recently. When we find ourselves sitting on the couch saying, "I'll get started as soon as the energy shows up," then we watch an entire day blow by and have nothing to show for it, it can get pretty demoralizing. Today, I share some things it took me years to learn from some of the best coaches out there to help you CREATE motivation instead of waiting for it. You got this! Ep 205 Hard Choices, Easy Life / Easy Choices, Hard Life We've all been there where we have an idea bouncing around our heads, but can't seem to get up off the couch. We want to get up early and get a jump on the day, but the bed is just TOO comfortable. We want to start eating better, but the idea of eating an entire steaming hot pizza just sounds SO good. I love the quote, "We become what we do habitually," and although it may seem like these small, isolated decisions aren't that important, when taken together they become everything. Today, we'll talk about why its so important to have up to challenges and how to get started today. Ep 204 Complain or Fix I saw a quote while scrolling around Instagram that said, "If you have told more than three people, you aren't looking for a solution, you are looking to complain." And it hit me hard. It was what I sometimes call a "Mirror Moment," a moment when you are forced to look in the mirror. As tough as it is to face up to our mistakes at times, it is the only way we will ever work through them. Today, I share some realizations I had and some ways to work through getting caught in a cycle of complaining and not acting. Ep 203 The Formula That Works We decide we are finally go do it. We are going to start the diet, get back to the gym, overcome depression, start a podcast, you name it. We do some research, struggle for a bit, then find something that works. Not only does it work, it starts to deliver consistent results! Finally we reach our goal and.... we stop. Why? Ep 202 No One is Coming to Save You This is simultaneously the most terrifying and liberating thing to know at your core. When you know no one is coming to save you, you realize you don't need someone else to save you. You've got this, you have the ability to find the answers and pull yourself out. But where do you even begin? In today's episode, we will talk about how to own this and embody it! Ep 201 Too Much to Do to Much Time We've all heard the phrase, "Too much to do, too little time," but what I have found is very often, people have much more time than they think. So what do you do when you have a huge list of goals and priorities that feels overwhelming, and a whole bunch of time to get it done? In today's episode we'll talk about how to get started, create momentum, and keep moving forward towards your dreams! Ep 199 Comfortable Complacency I heard a quote that said, "Most people are eternally mediocre," and that really hit me. Most people don't even get started, those that do, often give up after a couple tries. Even fewer, continue to a level of proficiency, and the smallest portion will continue to hone their craft to the point of mastery or becoming world class. So how do we keep ourselves from getting stuck in comfortable complacency? Tune in today to find out! Ep 198 Things Coming Together Sometimes it feels like we are taking step after step but not making any real progress. When we have our heads down, and we only see one step after another, it can often feel like there is nothing really changing. But if we keep moving and keep taking steps forward, when we look up, we can often shock ourselves with how far we've come. Ep 197 Time Well Spent My definition of "time well spent" or a "day well spent" has drastically changed from what it used to be in my 20's. I realized that my life was largely defined by pursuing achievement for validation of my worth in my 20's, but many times that led to constant pursuit and feelings of guilt when I wasn't working. Now at 31 I am celebrating and engaging life more, having more fun, meeting more people, having new experiences, and life feels more full (even when I am not "crushing it" with getting things done on the To-Do list. Why is that? Today, I'll share some reflections on why and how you can use them to experience more joy in your day-to-day life too. Ep 196 One Shot, One Opportunity There are true once in a lifetime opportunities that come in our lives where we may never see them again. But far more often, we tell ourselves that an event was once in a lifetime because we aren't willing to find / create another moment like it. What if we could make more opportunities to do and see amazing things in our lives? Today, we'll talk about how to do just that. Ep 195 Will Anyone Care? We can often doubt our ability to make an impact on people. When we are in our darkest moments, we convince ourselves that our art, our creation, won't matter. Why create a video, write a book, launch a video, start that business when we might find out that no one cares? We often are missing some very crucial things when we think this way. And we can convince ourselves that our negative voices are truth, and our positive voices are non-sense. In today's video, I'll share some lessons I have learned to help get past it when your mind seems to be winning the battle and telling your work won't matter. Because believe me, your work, your voice, your art, your message matters and the world needs it. Ep. 189 The Improvement Path (How We Get Things Done and Make Them Better) After years of process improvement work in my day job and in my coaching business, I noticed a common trend in the steps needed to get from starting a process to having it be a well-oiled machine. I noticed there were 3-Steps that were consistent across much of the process improvement work I have done. In today's episode I share what those 3-steps are, and how you can use them to get to the next level. Ep 186 Fight For It or Not It is amazing how often movies can hold nuggets of wisdom that can change our lives. Think about how many people have been motivated by Rocky's training montage, or insights from the great actors of our time. Recently, I was given a variety of insights from an unexpectedly poignant movie, Changeland. This movie gave me one simple question that can simplify some of life's toughest challenges. Ep 184 Losing 8 lbs in 10 Days If you had asked me before attending Tony Robbin's Unleash the Power Within if I could lose 8 lbs in 10 days, I would have said no. Not without doing something unhealthy and drastic like starving myself. One of my first coaches told me the power of coaches is that they can see further ahead into your future than even you can. That they can help make a better vision real. Having experienced the reality of losing the 8 lbs so quickly in a very healthy way, without starving myself, my body, mind, and spirit are hungry for more. I have reconnected with my potential and want to start to engage it in all areas of my life. Today, I share a bit about the experience and some of the biggest lessons I am taking away from it at this point. Ep 179 Tools in the Toolbox and Self Care Sometimes, self care can feel overwhelming. We can feel like if we don't meditate, exercise, journal, hydrate, eat healthy, get 10 hours of sleep, and snuggle with someone that we won't be able to be fully balanced. Most people have learned tools to help them better care for their mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual state. But how often and where should we use them? Ep 177 Creating Your Masterpiece Whether it is speaking, presenting, writing a sales letter, or putting on a performance, their are commonalities between the best and the worst. Through years of studying story-telling and speaking, working with incredible mentors, applying the lessons, and helping others do the same, I have found some things that help people deliver the most amazing stories possible. Creating a masterpiece is something that takes facing adversity, pushing yourself, and being willing to get WAY out of your comfort zone. But just doing those things is not enough unless you have the guidance of someone who has been there before you. Today, I share some of the best gems I have learned about speaking, story-telling, and crafting a message to help people take action that you can apply to your masterpiece now! Ep. 173 Amin Lakhani (PART 2) - The Dating Coach on Wheels talks Comedian, Imposter Syndrome, and Overcoming Life's Challenges At a young age Amin was diagnosed with a condition called Charcot-Marie Tooth disease, a degenerative genetic condition that affects nerves in the body causing difficulty moving and decreased sensation. He takes us through his journey of battling feeling "different" as an adolescent and what it was like growing up with CMT. In Pakistan, where Amin's family is from, disability is seen as taboo or a bad omen, but Amin's parents never let that influence him. They pushed him to go after his dreams and pursue them with tenacity. Through multiple surgeries and challenges associated with his condition, Amin continued to challenge himself to redefine what was possible for him to achieve. This eventually led to Amin interning at Google, graduating from an Ivy league school, and then earning a job at Microsoft after graduation. After all this success, he then wanted to improve his dating relationships and hired a dating coach to help him grow in that area of his life. Later, he dove into comedy to help him battle his own depression, to bring laughter to some of life's challenges, and to use humor to help others around him. Now, Amin is a dating coach, comedian, speaker, and writer working to help people use their challenges to help others and create their own unique magic in the world. In this two-part interview with Amin, he and I discuss: What it was like growing up with a degenerative genetic condition and some of the biggest lessons it taught him How to use rock-bottom moments to create momentum and shift the course of your life How to connect with people that have disabilities What he did to go from struggling to get a date to having too many options to choose from in his dating life The trap in the "Destination Fallacy" and how to avoid it How Amin used comedy to combat his depression How he has been able to face his challenges to live life without regrets And so much more! Ep 168 Mostly Sober February A few days into February, I decided I wanted to take the rest of February off. I wanted to be sober for a few weeks to see what I could do and produce when I'm not working "at a deficit" every weekend. There are times that we say we "need to unwind" and we drink, smoke, veg out, etc., but do we really end up feeling more rested and more recharged? Today I share about some of the recent realizations I had about what purpose drinking was serving in my life and where I feel it had been holding me back. I also share about how this applies to multiple areas of our lives. To find out how it could apply to yours, listen in today! NEED HELP WITH CONSISTENCY, PRODUCTIVITY, AND ACCOUNTABILITY? Ep 167 Know Your Limits When we think about our limits, we often think of them in terms of our workouts or our energy throughout the day. But how often do we think about our limits when it comes to relationships and friendships? This is just as important and sometimes more important than respecting our limits in the other areas of our lives. Where does your responsibility end in these situations? Today I talk about some important reminders of this in my own life and how you can make sure your are understanding and respecting limits in your life too. Brian Drury is more beautiful on the inside than he is out the outside--and THAT'S saying something sugars! Brian truly has a confidence that I WISH I had when I graduated college. You know that freaked out feeling you had when you graduate from Undergrad and you basically wanted to pee your pants because you had NO IDEA of what to do--Brian's mission is to help you with that. He's the host of a great great great podcast Overcoming Graduation and he is just all heart. Like seriously, I just want to get a lil' drunk with him, laugh, and then we would both probably talk about how much we love our lives and start crying. Yeah we are cheeseballs...I'm pretty sure we're related. Oh he also wrote a book that's gonna make all you ladies and gay men want his babies. Seriously, he's the nicest guy ever.
