In this podcast episode, we explore the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), education, and the ethical challenges it presents in the classroom. Our guests, Lara Bryfonski, Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics, and Ben Harbert, Professor and Chair in the Department of Performing Arts, share insights from their fields of linguistics and music. Lara describes how she integrates AI into her linguistics courses, focusing on how it impacts language learning and the ethical concerns of AI bias, particularly around language diversity. She encourages students to critically evaluate AI tools like text-to-speech and machine translation, highlighting how these systems can marginalize minority dialects. Ben discusses AI's role in music creation, where AI challenges traditional notions of human creativity. His students experiment with AI-generated music, comparing its output to human creations and examining the implications of AI on the emotional depth and cultural significance of music. Both guests emphasize the importance of teaching students to be critical users of AI, exploring ethical issues such as bias, ownership, and the future of human creativity in an AI-driven world. The episode concludes with a discussion on how educators can prepare students to navigate AI thoughtfully, ensuring the preservation of human diversity and creativity. The war in Ukraine has reached a pivotal moment. After months of an apparent stalling on the frontlines, Russia has recently made a series of critical breakthroughs. Now the race is on for Kyiv to get newly approved military aid to the front line before Russian forces attack Ukraine's second largest city, Kharkiv. The 60 billion dollar bill passed in America's congress at the end of April allows for Ukraine to push back against Russian forces and prepare to mount an offensive next year. But a gap in the supply of missiles has left Kyiv dangerously exposed and huge questions remain about how Ukraine's President will act next. So, on this week's Inquiry, we're asking ‘Has US military aid come in time for President Zelensky?'Contributors:Gustav Gressel, senior policy fellow with the Wider Europe Programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations' Berlin office. Prof. Olga Onuch has written what has been described as the definitive portrait of Volodymyr Zelensky, an extraordinary book called “The Zelensky Effect”. In this book, she explains the paradox of Zelensky as a leader and but also entertainer, businessman and risk-taker. She explores Ukraine's national history to show how its now-iconic president reflects the hopes and frustrations of the country's first ‘independence generation'. Interweaving social and political background with compelling episodes from Zelensky's life and career, this is the story of Ukraine told through the journey of one man who has come to symbolise his country, and perhaps uniquely in the world is forced to make decisions that are existential to the survival of his country. ---------- Prof. Olga Onuch is Professor (Chair) in Comparative and Ukrainian Politics at the University of Manchester (making her the first-ever holder of a Full Professorship in ‘Ukrainian Politics' in the English-speaking world). While much has been written and discussed regarding the impact of neoliberal philosophies/practices on contemporary higher education, far less available are compelling interpretations of the circumstance linked directly to practical responses. That is where Professor Clyde W. Barrow and his work stand out. Barrow's impressive array of scholarly contributions includes the 2019 book, The Entrepreneurial Intellectual in the Corporate University (Palgrave Macmillan). In a series of essays, Professor Barrow offers a contrarian take to dominant views of how to attack institutional neoliberalism in higher education. Barrow argues that it is necessary to stop viewing college/university institutionally as the focal point for change efforts. That's because bureaucratic structures and cultural practices–endemic to the corporatization and politicization of higher education–“thwart and suppress” those efforts. Instead, Barrow contends that faculty should conduct a good share of their work in self-organized/-governed enclaves situated beyond the boundaries of traditional structures, such as schools, departments, and colleges. While actualizing that outcome requires boundary-spanning leadership (skill, creativity, persistence, and administrative endorsement), Barrow's own experience at UMass Dartmouth shows that it can be done successfully. In addition, that approach “does not require a massive social movement to initiate.” Professor Barrow chairs the Department of Political Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He received his Ph.D. in political science at UCLA and served earlier (1987-2014) in various academic/administrative roles at UMass Dartmouth. Barrow is joined by dean and vice president Fred Poston, emeritus, Michigan State University. Known for creating space for interdisciplinary and cross-campus initiatives, Poston focuses in this session on work associated with spearheading MSU's sustainable campus initiative. The program is hosted by Professor/Director Rubén Martinez. Professor emeritus Frank Fear serves as discussant. In today's episode we talk to Thomas about what a game is and how a well-designed one balances constraints and unpredictabilities. We cover what relationships people build in and around games and how it (often) outstrips the designers' expectations of them; his experience with Linden Lab and how Second Life was designed not as a game but as a platform for game making; player governance as a legitimate component of an online space; the connection between trust, ethics, and governance and why it's necessary for game companies to participate in digital, public spaces. We talk about identity and building inclusive avatars and the asymmetry between players and game makers. Lastly we talk about chance, patterns and open ended-ness in games. This episode is recorded from Boston and the World Congress on Thyroid Cancer, where leading doctors and researchers have gathered to share the latest medical research and trends related to thyroid disease.  At the Congress, Dr. Okamoto presented on Thyroid Cancer Guidelines Around the World He helped write the Japanese guidelines on thyroid cancer.  He is Professor & Chair of the Department of Surgery at Tokyo Women’s Medical University.  Key points from this episode include: Most Western countries carry out total thyroidectomies, whereas in Japan, the approach is more conservative with a fundamental practice of hemithyroidectomy whenever possible. By not doing a total thyroidectomy, this allows the patient to not avoid taking thyroid replacement medication. Complete thyroidectomy is conducted when 80-90% of lymph nodes have metastasis. I-131 treatment is decreasing despite cases of cancer increasing For I-131 treatment, patients wait more than 6 months post surgery. When receving I-131 treatment, patients be admitted to hospital for several days. TSH suppression therapy is common in Western countries, whereas in Japan, measures are taken to avoid TSH suppression by not removing all of the thyroid. Normal TSH in Japan is 4.3 or less. Culturally, Japanese patients are typically conservative compared to Western countries.  Even high risk patients opt for no TT. In Japan people are less aggressive and more patient as a culture, and this is reflected in their approach to treating thyroid cancer. For medullary thyroid cancer, treatment management differs in japan.  In Westerm countries, they receive TT.  But, in Japan, if its not familial it is treated with hemithyrodectmy.  Only when familial, is it treated with TT. Calcitonin Follicular diagnosis is difficult, benign and malignant is a big issue.  Active surveillance is spreading now, the question is why?  We must consider the patient’s view.  Research from Japan focuses on the size of tumor, but must consider patient’s view.  NOTES Book: Treatment of Thyroid Tumor: Japanese Clinical Guidelines American Thyroid Association RELATED EPISODES 38: Thyroid Surgery?
