What does financial market turmoil mean for low-carbon energy?

Investors have gone sour on clean energy. In a troubled time for stock markets in general, where is the capital for energy flowing now?Host Ed Crooks is joined by Shanu Mathew, Senior VP and Portfolio Manager at Lazard Asset Management, and Amy Myers Jaffe, Director of the Energy, Climate Justice, and Sustainability Lab at NYU. Shanu returns to the show to break down how institutional investors, under pressure to deliver returns, are shifting strategies on energy. Amy shares insights on cleantech venture capital trends, and the factors that support investment in low-carbon solutions. With support for renewables under threat, and cutting-edge technologies facing mounting challenges, is the transition to low-carbon energy slowing down or recalibrating? Meanwhile, Big Oil companies are changing course on their decarbonisation strategies and approaches to addressing climate change. BP and Shell are pulling back from power and renewables and emphasising oil and gas investments instead, after pressure from investors. Are they adapting to market realities, or are they abandoning clean energy too soon? And what will their strategic shift mean for the rest of the industry and for the climate? Amy discusses the close ties between oil prices and capital flows into cleantech. Finally, there's no end to the debate around AI's evolving role in energy infrastructure. Electricity demand growth remains a dominant trend. The hyperscale data centre users, such as major tech firms, have emerged as key players in power demand. But trust issues persist between them and energy providers. The sector has a history of overestimating demand growth, leading to overbuilding. Are we in danger of going through that cycle all over again?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For the first episode of 2025, Gerard and Laurent have the pleasure of welcoming Shanu Mathew. Shanu is a Senior Vice President at Lazard Asset Management and Portfolio Manager/Analyst on US Sustainable Equity.  We are going to analyse the performance of “Cleantech” Equities throughout 2024 and discuss what to expect for 2025. Let's be honest: 2024 was an annus horribilis for “Core” Cleantech with major indices (S&P Global Clean Energy Index) down 20%. But 2024 was also an exceptional year for “Periphery” (or adjacent) Cleantech with companies like Siemens Energy and GE Vernova being star performers. Why such a divergence between “Core” and “Periphery”? What fundamentals are sustaining such trends? Beside interest rates, political uncertainties, competition of China, there are some green shoots that certain segments have better captured than others. And of course, we are talking about load growth and the rise of datacenters. A rising tide lift all boats, and Core Cleantech having been so much slaughtered in recent years due to past excesses, we foresee a positive rebalancing in 2025.Overall, a very vast panorama of how the market values the future of the Energy Transition.

Tony Dote, just recently retired from a role of Managing Director at Lazard Asset Management, where he spent over 40 years, focused on business development with a particular focus on large institutional investors including public pension funds. He started his career in insurance and later investment consulting. Our conversation starts with Tony's upbringing in a large and close Italian family in his native Chicago. We learned about the bonds of family and community that were laid down there and how this later influenced the premium that he places on these features. Tony's career evolution charts the evolution of the industry – the development of the investment consultant value proposition and the evolution of institutional portfolios beyond stocks and bonds.  Over 40 years a tremendous amount has changed, and this is what Tony considers the only constant in the industry – change. He describes some high points and low points, and the relationships that have been central to his profound success in this area. This episode is supported by PIMCO, a global leader in active fixed income with deep expertise across public and private markets. We discuss the implications of this for portfolio construction, risk and how investment products are delivered. We move then to discuss some of Jai's many other interests – in particular Jazz, and his musical passion.  We talk about the evolution of this art form, where it sits in society today, and what we can learn from the perfection of a jazz solo. This episode is supported by PIMCO, a global leader in active fixed income with deep expertise across public and private markets. Regulators are trying to clear the path to the grid that clean energy needs. To go from an electricity system based on coal and gas to one based on solar and wind, the US needs a very different power grid. On some estimates, annual installations of new transmission capacity need to double. To help build the grid that a new clean electricity system will need, the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has been working on regulatory reforms, intended to smooth the path for new investments in transmission lines. Ed Crooks is joined by Amy Myers-Jaffe of New York University and Shanu Mathew of Lazard Asset Management, to unpack the latest orders from FERC. What are the regulators trying to do, and why do some people object to their plans? And what will the proposed reforms mean for the energy transition in the electricity sector in the US? It has been a busy few weeks for big announcements in energy. A new round of tariffs on clean energy products from China was announced this month by President Biden, with rates of 100% on electric vehicles, 50% on solar modules, and 25% on lithium-ion batteries. The goal is to revive clean energy manufacturing in the US, but critics say the tariffs could be counter-productive, because they will drive up the cost of low-carbon technologies for American businesses and consumers. One important gauge of the state of the energy transition is the health of investment in low-carbon stocks. The news on that over the past couple of years has not been great. So what are the markets telling us about the future of clean energy? Shanu gives us his analysis, and joins Amy and Ed to debate investor sentiment and what it means. She was also a speaker at the event S&P Global Sustainable1 hosted during Climate Week NYC.   In the interview, Nikita talks about the need to break out of silos to connect the dots between different types of stakeholders, like economists, the finance community and climate scientists.   “Economists are building climate risk models and trying to build it into using econometric tools, but often they may be divorced from the reality of the science,” she says. "Connecting conversations across silos from science to economics to finance to data is extremely important.”  She also highlights the need to balance environmental and social goals — or the idea that credible energy transition plans must also account for the impact on people and communities.   “I grew up in Thailand and India, and I was very conscious growing up of the inherent trade-offs between environmental and social goals,” Nikita tells us. "A lot of countries in emerging markets such as India still have a long way to go in terms of socioeconomic development.”  Find prior episodes for Climate Week NYC here:   PRI CEO talks Asia's critical role in reaching net-zero, Climate Week takeaways: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/pri-ceo-talks-asia-s-critical-role-in-reaching-net-zero-climate-week-takeaways    Unpacking government's role in catalyzing low-carbon solutions: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/unpacking-government-s-role-in-catalyzing-low-carbon-solutions    At Climate Week NYC, seeking solutions at the nexus of climate, water and social issues: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/at-climate-week-nyc-seeking-solutions-at-the-nexus-of-climate-water-and-social-issues   At Climate Week NYC, using collaboration to tackle supply chain emissions: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/at-climate-week-nyc-using-collaboration-to-tackle-supply-chain-emissions   On the ground at Climate Week NYC: The challenge of Scope 3 emissions: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/on-the-ground-at-climate-week-nyc-the-challenge-of-scope-3-emissions    What to expect from Climate Week NYC:  https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/what-to-expect-from-climate-week-nyc-2023   This piece was published by S&P Global Sustainable1, a part of S&P Global.   Copyright ©2023 by S&P Global  DISCLAIMER  By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that S&P GLOBAL makes no warranty, guarantee, or representation as to the accuracy or sufficiency of the information featured in this Podcast. The market and economic backdrop is making diversification in a global equity allocation difficult. Market cap indices are narrower than any time in history, as the market and active managers flock to the mega caps perceived as logical winners from the AI revolution. As markets become narrow and expensive, core, growth and quality portfolios are converging. This presents risks for many portfolios but a great opportunity for valuation-focused investors. While headline multiples are demanding, there remains opportunities in predictable earnings and forecastable cashflow generators that are being overlooked. As valuation and concentration risks rise, doing nothing is no longer an option, particularly when not everything carries the same risks. - Warryn Robertson, Lazard Asset Management. It's a little over a year since the US Inflation Reduction Act was passed into law. Solar was one of the main beneficiaries, thanks to an extension and expansion of the tax credits available to the industry. So why has the sector fallen out of favour with investors recently?August was a difficult month for the markets in general, but companies including First Solar, Sunrun, Sunpower and Sunnova (who have been featured on our sister podcast The Interchange) have had it particularly rough. To look into what's going on, host Ed Crooks is joined by two of our regular finance and investment experts: Shanu Mathew, of Lazard Asset Management, and Amy Myers-Jaffe, of NYU's Energy, Climate Justice and Sustainability Lab. Together, look at the residential and utility-scale solar markets and the investment going into them, the US perspective against a global investment backdrop, and the long-term prospects for solar. Also in this show: what went wrong at Proterra? Proterra was an electric bus and battery company championed by President Biden as an example of how the US could build a manufacturing base in cleantech, but it filed for bankruptcy in early August. What does its failure tell us about the future of electric vehicles? And how do these challenges facing two key sectors, solar and EVs, change our perceptions of the clean energy transition? Finally, ESG investing is in the spotlight again. Larry Fink, CEO of Blackrock – one of the world's biggest asset management firms – said recently that he “doesn't use the word ESG any more, because it's been entirely weaponised...by the far left and weaponised by the far right.” Republican politicians in the US have attacked ESG as “a direct threat to the American economy, individual economic freedom, and our way of life.” Some statistics have suggested that interest in ESG investing has been waning from its high point in 2021. Amy says the capital is still flowing into clean energy, but investors need to “pick the right team, the right technology, the right management.” Shanu argues that the trends still support moves towards increased sustainability and the use of environmental, social and governance factors in investment decisions. ESG may not be a buzz-word any more, at least not in a positive sense. But the ideas that lie behind it can still be useful.Follow the conversation on X, the platform we know as Twitter – we're @theenergygang. And subscribe to the show so you don't miss an episode. Could a Banking Crisis Stop Our Energy Transition Progress?

It has been a turbulent month in the financial sector, which could have big implications for the world of energy. Mobilising capital is vital for achieving international goals to curb greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to the impacts of global warming. As the global banking system shudders from the blow of Silicon Valley Bank collapsing, is long-term climate investment being pushed further to the fringes of the agenda? The latest Assessment Report from the IPCC has delivered what's been called a “final warning” on limiting global warming to 1 .5 degrees C, saying we are on course for about 3.2 degrees C of warming by the end of the century. The report, which aims to bring together and summarise the state of the world's scientific knowledge on climate change, warns that flows of investment, especially to developing countries, “fall short of the levels needed for adaptation and to achieve mitigation goals across all sectors and regions.” As we learn more about the climate crisis, are we heading for another financial crisis, too? Clean energy share prices have been falling on concerns that the sector will be hit by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Meanwhile, President Biden has used his first veto to protect a government regulation that seeks to encourage the use of ESG (environmental, social and governance) factors in investment decision. The Republicans are leading the charge against ESG investing, arguing that “woke Wall Street” is putting investors' money at risk. On the show today: Ed Crooks is joined by Dr Melissa Lott from Columbia University, and Shanu Matthew of Lazard Asset Management, to analyse the financial storm we've seen brewing in the past few weeks. What exactly has been going on in the banking system? What are the implications for clean energy as the economic clouds are gathering? Rising interest rates are a big contributor to pressure on the banking system, and also have implications for renewables. The gang then get on to the ESG backlash: is it real, and what does it mean for investors and for clean energy companies that need capital? Finally, they review the IPCC report: although the problems it sets out look dire, there are solutions, and Melissa and Shanu have some ideas for how to make them happen. Disinflation has begun in the United States and will soon in Europe, but cutting inflation from 4% to 2% will be tougher than from 6% to 4%. Even after the near-term battle has been won, the probability of structurally higher inflation across developed economies has increased, and monetary policy responses are likely to diverge meaningfully. To navigate this transition's VUCA, investors will need to leverage the experience of past decades while also humbly contemplating an uncertain outlook. The winning investment playbook will no longer depend solely on macro factors and asset allocation but will also require fundamentally driven security selection to drive returns. With just a few days until world leaders and policy makers meet in Egypt for COP27, two returning Energy Gang members join host Ed Crooks to discuss what is expected from the latest round of international climate talks. As the UN warns that there is “no credible pathway” in place to limit global warming to 1.5 °C, arguments about climate justice are rising up the agenda for international negotiations. Amy Duffuor of Azolla Ventures, and Shanu Mathew of Lazard Asset Management, kick off the discussion by explaining the idea of climate justice, and then go on to explore what it means for the future of energy. Although it might seem like quite an abstract concept, considerations of climate justice can in fact have direct practical significance for decisions by businesses, investors, governments and NGOs. The gang discusses some of those implications, and looks at how they could shape the effort to tackle climate change in the future.Next, we shift our focus to the shipping industry, a large and growing contributor to global warming. When markets crash sharply, as they did earlier this year, it can be a mistake to assume that as soon as the falls peter out, the market will then naturally recover.  Sure, this sometimes happens. The crash of 87, the global financial crisis, and COVID are all examples where the market went into freefall fall once, more or less, before recovering.  But here's the thing. Just because the market has sold off and since recovered some, that's no guarantee the market is in recovery mode. Markets, sectors and individual stocks can go down, stabilise, then go down again. While picking the bottom might be a mug's game, you're not going to go into high gear and invest if you think there's further broad based losses on the way.  This is where today's guest comes in. Dr Philipp Hofflin, Portfolio Manager at Lazard Asset Management, is an expert in market bubbles and what happens after them. And it's not as cut and dry as you might think.    In this episode, Phil discusses:  his learnings from Jackson Hole and where we are in the rate cycle; the difference between Australia and the US when it comes to interest rate sensitivity; why some stocks are now attractive while others have further to fall; how he values the energy sector, and  what sectors and stocks are attractively priced.

The prophets of doom are blowing their recession horns. Accordingly, investors want to hold assets that can be bulwarks against whatever's driving recession - that being inflation in today's case. And that's what today's edition of The Rules of Investing is all about. Livewire's James Marlay sat down with Warryn Robertson, who is a portfolio manager and analyst at Lazard Asset Management. Warryn's responsible for managing the Global Equity Franchise Strategy as well as Lazard's well-known Global Listed Infrastructure Fund - which has roughly $20 billion under the hood.  Today's episode will focus on infrastructure - a topic we know is front of mind for our readers. In our recent survey infrastructure ranked third as the asset class they're most likely to increasing exposure to over the next 12 months.  Warren founded the infrastructure strategy back in 2005 and it has returned 10.7% per annum since then.  You'll hear why infrastructure is "the best inflation protection you can get".  But don't go running off to market before pressing play on this episode - as it can't be just any old infrastructure.  He also explains how Lazard value their assets, the key thing the whole investment industry missed during COVID, the increasing trend towards privatisation of infrastructure and a near monopoly asset that he believes offers compelling value.  This episode was recorded on June 23, 2022.

However, the adjustment has further to run, and speculative growth stocks remain vulnerable. Investing over the next several years is going to be unlike anything we've experienced in decades. The pandemic triggered a paradigm shift in the economy, politics, and markets that stimulated a rapid economic recovery. This recovery, however, also added fuel to the fire of inflation resulting from a surge in demand for goods whose supply was constrained. As central banks pivot from QE to QT and rate hikes to dampen price pressures, investors should re-evaluate the post-GFC era playbook that might no longer work amidst structurally higher inflation and rising discount rates. Undoubtedly, it's time to go back to the drawing board to reassess the best approach to both defence and offence in a more volatile, changing market. - Ronald Temple, Lazard Asset Management. Part of Russia's capital structure has become uninvestable and Eastern European assets have had significant sell offs despite their balance sheet fundamentals being significantly better. The outlook is positive for many emerging market economies, as growth continues to rebound. Indeed, in 2022, emerging markets are poised to outperform the developed world, as Western policymakers tighten monetary policy and withdraw fiscal stimulus. From an investment perspective, emerging market debt is under-owned, and portfolios should be reallocated to those parts of the world that are beneficiaries of this type of macroeconomic backdrop. - Arif Joshi, Lazard Asset Management on Portfolio Construction Forum

In recent years, news headlines are frequently filled with announcements of financial institutions, funds, and corporations making hefty pledges to transform their portfolios to ensure that they stay in line with net-zero targets. Is this new wave of support for the energy transition motivated by making a quick buck or has there really been a change of opinion on the opportunities in which going net-zero really has to offer? How is the changing climate affecting investments? How are investors driving the transition? These are some of the key questions we look to answer in this episode. The Energy Gang is delighted to be joined by two professionals who have spent the majority of their careers bridging the gap between finance and climate change. Our first guest, Shanu Mathew is the VP of Sustainable Investing and Net-Zero Research at Lazard Asset Management, one of the world's leading investment companies. Hundreds of companies around the world have made ambitious promises to purchase only wind, solar and other types of clean electricity to power their operations. But many of these corporations aren’t buying actual physical electricity from renewable sources. Instead, they are snapping up incredibly cheap instruments known as unbundled renewable energy certificates, or RECs, which allows them to make “100% renewable power” claims while continuing to emit greenhouse gases as before. The practice is also problematic because it does little to encourage the establishment of new wind or solar farms —not a good outcome in the broader fight against climate change.   In this episode, we talk to Max Scher, head of clean energy and carbon programs at software giant Salesforce, which used to buy RECs but no longer does so.   “My general fear here is that if we are hyper-focused on… purchasing RECs, we’re going to miss the hard work, the important work, on reducing energy consumption, thinking about siting of facilities on cleaner grids” and other real-world steps to lower the carbon footprint of corporations,” Max tells us.  We also hear from an analyst at Lazard Asset Management, and from Matthew Brander, a carbon accounting expert at the University of Edinburgh who cautions that buying RECS instead of actual renewable power can be “a very low-cost easy way of making it appear to have reduced emissions.” Photo credit: Getty images

Guest: Warryn Robertson, Lazard Asset Management. An investor's job can be boiled down to two primary tasks, explains Warryn Robertson, Portfolio Manager at Lazard. First, to predict what a company's cash flows or earnings will be in the future, and secondly, to work out how much to pay for those earnings. Estimating two unknowns like this is a big challenge for equity investors, so why not make it easier? By investing in businesses with cash flows that can be easily predicted, this reduces uncertainty, and allows them to focus on the other half of the equation. “If you can find a group of companies that has more predictable earnings, more consistent cash flows, you're making your job as an investor much easier in terms of arriving at that valuation. That is, in essence, the overriding philosophy that I've had throughout my investing career.” In this week's episode of The Rules of Investing podcast, we discuss some unique benefits that come from investing in infrastructure equities, how he avoids the dreaded "value trap", and one area of investment he thinks could see significant negative returns in the coming years.
