In this episode of Two Strike Noise, Jeff and Mark explore current events in baseball, including the Mariners' recent challenges, the anticipation for the trade deadline, former MLB stars like Trevor Bauer and Robinson Cano in the Mexican League and they learn about John Coleman and his no good, really bad rookie season (and his modern day counterpart). The main segment is Mark and Jeff each telling three short stories, two of which are true and one that is made up. Can you figure out which is which? In this Episode of Sports the NEMO Way we bring the best Mariners of all time to the table for discussion.
2nd baseman Ryne Sandberg is deservedly in the Hall of Fame. So is Roberto Alomar. On the other hand, Bobby Grich, Lou Whitaker, and Jeff Kent are not, and it's unlikely that Robinson Cano will ever make it for off-the-field reasons. Chase Utley has a chance, and Jose Altuve is on track. We compared all of these players stats and careers and it's amazing how much alike their careers were or have been so far. Only 20 2B have ever been elected to the HOF. Gordon makes a great point that the historical HOF era committees should vote more regularly than every few years. Chase Utley did not play his entire career with the Phillies as he played four different seasons for the Dodgers. Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! The New York Yankees had a busy weekend, complete with naming the fifth starter, traveling to Mexico and playing a few split-squad games! First up, Luis Gil was named the fifth starter in the Yankees' rotation. The news was revealed on Sunday but Gil found out after he pitched on Friday against the Mets. He had a dazzling Spring and earned the spot. We discuss that and the chances of Will Warren also making an impact at some point in 2024 after impressing the Yankees with his performance this Spring. Carlos Rodón made his last start of the Spring before he starts Game Two of the season in Houston and it wasn't exactly what he (or Yankee fans) wanted to see, but he was happy about being healthy and building up to 82 pitches. Hey, as long as he's happy, right? Then we discuss the Yankees' exhibition game in Mexico on Sunday in which they were beaten by an old friend in Robinson Cano who was a triple short of the cycle and went 3-4. The Yankees dropped the game 4-3 but it was still a fun experience watching the fans in Mexico have so much fun. Marcus Stroman was back in Florida and made his final start of the Spring, and it was good. He didn't give up a run in six innings against the Pirates and struck out five. The Yankees made some roster moves, sending some guys to Triple-A and Minor league camp and DJ LeMahieu may not be ready for Opening Day. Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman are back on a Monday morning to look at two big NL transactions that happened over the last few days. This morning, the Philadelphia Phillies reportedly locked in pitcher Zack Wheeler on a 3-year, $126 million extension that will keep the Ace in eastern Pennsylvania for another four years. The guys explain why this is a great deal for both sides.Next, they look back at the San Francisco Giants signing 3B Matt Chapman over the weekend to a 3-year, $54 million deal. Jake & Jordan explain why this is less good for Chapman money-wise and a great move for the Giants, looking to make a dent in the loaded NL West. With larger extensions reportedly left on the table in Oakland and Toronto for Chapman, could his agent Scott Boras' strategy of having his clients wait out the market until deep into March be failing? In the second half of the podcast, the guys open up the grab bag and hit a number of miscellaneous baseball nuggets from the past week including new Baltimore Orioles owner David Rubenstein visiting spring training, New York Mets owner Steve Cohen clapping back on X, Robinson Canó's return to the Mexican League & more.[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Baseball league for the 2024 MLB season]1:25 - Zack Wheeler extension in Philadelphia12:00 - Matt Chapman signs with Giants27:35 - Orioles new owner David Rubenstein, man of the people31:00 - Mets owner Steve Cohen claps back on X36:35 - Adam LaRoche's son Drake's impressive D3 outing40:25 - Sixto Sanchez and Brendan McKay are back!44:30 - Fanatics CEO responds to backlash47:40 - Robinson Canó in the Mexican LeagueFollow the show on X at @CespedesBBQFollow Jake @Jake_MintzFollow Jordan @J_Shusterman_
Kash Shaikh is an award-winning storyteller, marketer, brand builder, and entrepreneur. And he had a crazy dream. A dream so large - so grandiose - so monumental that it was hard for even him to grasp the concept truly. The dream was to bring baseball - America's National Pastime - to the epicenter of cricket: the Middle East and South Asia. It is a land with over 2 billion people (1 billion cricket fans), and he wants to do it in a major way. His idea is now called Baseball United, and it's no longer a dream — it's a reality. Baseball United has four teams: Mumbai Cobras (GM Barry Larkin & Manager Chris Sabo), Karachi Monarchs (GM Adrian Beltre & Manger Miguel Tejada), Dubai Wolves (GM Felix Hernadez & Manager John McLaren), and the Abu Dhabi Falcons (GM Nick Swisher & Dennis Cook). The league held its first-ever draft last month, featuring prominent former MLB players like Robinson Canó, Bartolo Colon, Pablo Sandoval, Didi Gregorius. and Andrelton Simmons. On this episode, Cheats is joined by Flobo as they welcome Kash to talk all things Baseball United. This episode is informative and fun. It gives you a glimpse into the daily challenges of building a major (international) baseball league from scratch. You don't want to miss this episode. As always, please subscribe to the Black Baseball Mixtape. Please rate and review the show. Thanks to Steelo, the Players Alliance, and everyone who helps make the Mixtape possible.
