Prophecy Radio episode #106 discusses Chalie of the Gods chapters 9 through 11 in all of their glory, including how wistful and introspective Percy is these days! We also break down the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick's latest blog posts, J. Maya's fate on Survivor season 45, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, and Graci Kim's newly announced series coming in 2025. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:02) Life has been pretty chaotic on every front lately, but we're doing our best to get back into the groove of the podcast. Thanks for sticking with us! We start the episode with a discussion of Rick's October 17 blog post, in which he discusses what's going on in Gaza at the present moment. This post had no promotion, and it was seemingly deleted and then reuploaded. Rightfully, fans have been critical of Rick for talking about Gaza and then transitioning into self-promotion. Please be aware there is A LOT of misinformation out there about what's happening right now, so do your due diligence and verify all the information you're receiving before passing it on. Tehlor Kay Mejia, Daniel José Older, and Sarwat Chadda have been speaking out a lot on their platforms about Gaza, Israel, and Palestine, so be sure to follow them for additional resources. Mark Oshiro is raising funds for Palestine through Books for Palestine. The auction is now live. Here is a list of Palestinian journalists on the ground in Gaza. If you have the ability to donate, charities like Save the Children, Doctors without Borders, and Palestine Children's Relief Fund are good places to start. You can also use 5Calls to talk to your representatives about a ceasefire. Rick also wrote a blog post on October 23 about the recent releases from Rick Riordan Presents, and some upcoming titles. We're particularly looking forward to A Drop of Venom, Winston Chu vs. the Wingmeisters, and It Waits in the Forest. Read Riordan has also been busy over the last two weeks, wanting you to catch up with Zyanya from Dawn of the Jaguar, as well as meet Admiral Paik from Fox Snare. They also wrote a cute little article about how to sneak into Camp Half-Blood. Graci Kim also announced the title and a vague release date for her next book, Dreamslinger. We read through the synopsis and confirm that we're really excited about this one! Kristen's Korner is back as we discuss the last two episodes of Survivor season 45 and J's fate on the island. The SAG-AFTRA strikes are ongoing, and we're waiting with bated breath to see what becomes of them. Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan (00:36:54) Let's kick off our discussion with Chalice of the Gods chapter 9! Getting chased by chickens is, like, Karen's worst nightmare. Annabeth is SO SMART, and we love how single-minded she is in leading the trio. Grover is so helpful in this chapter, and we love seeing him be the person with all the helpful information. Did you know that Hebe and Hercules got married!? Did we just find out why satyrs age half as fast as humans!? Grover must go distract the chickens while Annabeth and Percy commit a party fowl. NGL, we kinda love Li'l Killer. Okay, the plan is to sing a song and beg for forgiveness. The backup plan is Plan Chick…whatever that means! This chapter may have contained Karen's single favorite joke in all of Rick Riordan's books. Let's move on to Chalice of the Gods chapter 10. It's time to belt out a tune by some guy. Why is the choice always the plan succeeds or we die!? This is 90% all Percy's fault. Percy has his priorities, and Annabeth has hers. When did you figure out what Plan Chick was? Annabeth really is a genius. This was SO CLEVER. The trio FINALLY get returned to their proper ages. It's now time for Chalice of the Gods chapter 11. Hebe sends the trio after Iris, down at the farmers' market. It's so cute how excited Percy is for a local quest, but also pretty sad how traumatized he is by being turned back into a little kid. Sally Jackson gets the Mother of the Century award. Do we have to worry about her getting older!? What was Percy like when he was a kid? Mark Oshiro's influence on Rick is SO OBVIOUS in this chapter. Yes, Percy, MILLIONS of people have dreamt of slipping into your life. Can Percy wash the dishes and play video games at the same time!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 107, in which we'll discuss Chalice of the Gods chapters 12-14! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. Prophecy Radio episode #103 discusses the Chalice of the Gods book tour stop in Chicago, and brings you an exclusive interview with Rick Riordan himself. We also break down the latest Riordanverse news, including updates on Survivor season 45, the SAG-AFTRA strike, upcoming Rick Riordan Presents books, and more. Oh, and we also discuss Chalice of the Gods chapters 4 and 5. It's a packed episode that you don't want to miss! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:45) There's a lot of birthdays to celebrate this week! Fox Snare by Yoon Ha Lee releases on October 17. Read Riordan wants you to meet Sparkstriker, from Dawn of the Jaguar by J.C. Cervantes, out on October 10. Sarwat Chadda just got a deal for a new middle grade fantasy series from Simon & Schuster, according to Publishers Weekly. We are already obsessed, and we can't wait to check it out in 2025! Read Riordan also wants you to meet Elisson from Chalice of the Gods. Percy Jackson has been on the NYT bestsellers list for approximately eight thousand years. Welcome back to yet another installment of Kristen's Korner! We give you a little update on J. Maya's progress on Survivor season 45. We're so happy she ended up as a GIF. Could she make it to the merge!? Only time will tell! Did you see that Dylan O'Brien and Logan Lerman were striking together the other day? According to SAG-AFTRA, negotiations are ongoing. Hopefully we'll have good news next week! Chalice of the Gods book tour—Chicago (00:17:39) Karen provides all the details from the Chalice of the Gods book tour stop in Chicago. When you see orange t-shirts, you know you've found your people. The WILDEST coincidence occurred while she was there. Shoutout to our new best friend from Anderson's Bookshop. Oh, yeah, we totally have a giveaway in the works. Check our Twitter and Instagram for details! Speaking of, Anderson's sounds like an amazing place with an awesome history. Apologies for the background noise!! Karen got to meet Daniel José Older and it went well even though she was super nervous! Rick definitely gives teacher vibes. One of the highlights of this tour stop was speaking to Stephanie Lurie, Rick's editor! Long live Rick Riordan Presents! Have you seen the promotional video for Chalice of the Gods? If you find it, can you send it to us!? We love how much Daniel and Rick were excited to be there in conversation with each other. A lot of the presentation consisted of information we've already discussed. Can you guess which of the Rick Riordan Presents titles the audience was more excited about? Rick has already seen the cover for the third Serwa Boateng book! It should come as no surprise that the audience went WILD when Rick starting talking about the show. We'll bring you more information from that section after the strike is over. Stephanie Lurie makes an excellent Coach Hedge. Congratulations to everyone who won a chalice!!! Karen got to meet some listeners, and they were AWESOME!! Hopefully Karen AND Kristen can go to the next book tour together. We can't wait for Wrath of the Triple Goddess! Interview with Rick Riordan (00:41:15) Check out our Rick Riordan interview discussing Chalice of the Gods! How does Rick usually plot out his stories? Was this one harder because it fits between two previous series? When did he start working on Wrath of the Triple Goddess? Has anything changed since the last time Rick wrote from Percy Jackson's point of view? Was writing this book different because it was a slice-of-life story? You can definitely feel Mark Oshiro's influence on this book! The spoiler section starts at 49:06. Did Rick ever consider someone else to be the bad guy in this story? Are there any myths that Rick still hasn't written about after all these years? Everyone is a huge fan of Grover and Aryan Simhadri. Rick gives us a little teaser for Wrath of the Triple Goddess! Was it hard writing about Jason? Will we ever get another standalone novel like The Sun and the Star? When might we be getting some updates on all the projects he has going on? Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:54:16) First, let's tackle Chalice of the Gods chapter 4! Percy managed to make it through an entire day of school! We loved the details about Percy trying not to look too weird during swim practice. It's not hard to figure out someone's a god when they can freeze time. There's no way around this: Ganymede is hot. Let's take a trip to Himbo Juice! It's VERY important that we discuss everyone's drink order. There's a very good reason why Ganymede doesn't like eagles. In case anyone doubted it, Annabeth and Grover still have Percy's back. The gig economy is rough on everyone—even gods. Now it's time to discuss Chalice of the Gods chapter 5. Poor Ganymede is triggered. It's a VERY big deal that the chalice is missing. But who could've stolen it? Ganymede has a lot of enemies. Hera is mad that Ganymede has nicer legs than her. But Hebe and Iris used to have the job he has now… What kind of deadline are we working with? Ganymede has a few restrictions for the trio… Thank goodness Grover knows where to start! Feedback (01:18:49) Should this book have included all three quests, or do we like that we're getting a new trilogy? Rachel brings up a question about the timeline of this book and the events of The Last Olympian and Heroes of Olympus. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 104, in which we'll discuss Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods chapters 6 through 8! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #95 asks which Rick Riordan Presents characters would make for the best team-ups before catching you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, like who Chalice of the Gods is dedicated to and what a few of our favorite campers are up to this summer. This week, we also tackle The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 18 and get a firsthand look at how formidable fruit bats can truly be. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:49) Did you see who Rick dedicated Chalice of the Gods to? If you're in a book burnout, short stories and novellas are a good place to get you back into the swing of it! We read through a couple of the blurbs from Read Riordan's Camp Half-Blood middle of summer check-in article. Will Solace has a special set of skills… The world is so weird, the existence of Camp Half-Blood is the least of our worries these days. What is Bob the Titan up to now? Can you willfully ignore Rachel's prophecies?? Best Rick Riordan Presents team-ups (00:13:45) We were inspired to do this episode based on Kristen's idea to pair Annabeth, Chela, and Belet together for an adventure. And let's not forget the chaos that would ensue between the Arrow of Dodona, Jack/the Sword of Summer, and Kasusu. There are plenty of characters who are into science and must face a mythological monster. Dead Brothers Club unite! There are two stories that deal in Korean mythology, and so we can't pass up that opportunity. Karen mentioned this before, but Sik and Samirah could end up being such a great duo. Would Samirah and Belet become best friends? Probably. We start thinking of monsters who would make great team-ups. Let's not forget about the parents!! Some of our listeners write in with their own pairings. The Red Pyramid discussion (00:49:18) This week, we're discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 18. It's a rainy day in Paris, but you know, it's still Paris. Being in Paris is actually the best place they ever could've ended up. We learn more about godlings and what happened in the museum and how the amulets work. Who is hosting Set!? This is the chapter with all the answers, finally, because we learn what happened to their mom. Time to break into Desjardins' house! Why couldn't Sadie turn back into a human? We learn a little bit more about Desjardins and how young he is…for a magician. It's time to go, but the fruit bats don't want them to leave. Where can they go to escape a second time? We can't wait for a Sadie chapter to learn more about her relationship with Isis. Feedback (01:18:17) Dr. Gina writes in to say how much she loved our interview with Sarwat Chadda! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 96, where we'll celebrate Percy Jackson's birthday before jumping into The Red Pyramid chapter 19! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #94 discusses Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda before catching you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including some fun news from several different Rick Riordan Presents authors. Oh, and we give you a quick update on the WGA/SAG strikes and how they'll affect the podcast moving forward. This week, we pause our discussion of The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid in order to chat with Sarwat Chadda about his latest release. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:28) Read Riordan did a spotlight on up-and-coming Camp Half-Blood Campers and this seems to be mostly focused on characters from The Trials of Apollo. Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda is now officially out in the world! Read a Fury of the Deagon Goddess excerpt on Read Riordan. Kristen tells us about her experience attending the Fury of the Dragon Goddess virtual tour that Sarwat did with Books of Wonder. Did you know Kwame Mbalia is writing a short story for the Star Wars anthology From a Certain Point of View? Mark Oshiro will be at the National Book Festival on August 12. Make sure you check out Daniel José Older's new podcast Inkbottle. We also talk about some SAG-AFTRA updates that will affect the podcast. Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda (00:11:16) At long last, it's time to talk about Fury of the Dragon Goddess, the second book in the Adventures of Sik Aziz series. What is this book about? How did we feel about this book compared to the last one? What was it like reading about Sik and the others being in London instead of NYC? There are a lot of themes shared between these two books, but there are also some specific to Dragon Goddess. It's so interesting that we're reading this book at the same time we're talking about The Red Pyramid! Sik is still not a warrior, and we LOVE that about him. We're so happy he got to travel this time around…even if it all went horribly wrong. Daoud is, like, super famous now. We loved that this didn't solve all his problems, and we still got to see him (and his relationship with Sik) grow over the course of the book. Is Belet no longer looking for her mother? What's the deal with this tablet? Did we like that this book dealt a lot with (female) rage? Have you read “The Loneliest Demon” from Cursed Carnivals and Other Calamities? Who is Rabisu and why is she so great? Why does she want to kill Belet so badly, and why can't she? Everyone likes a pigeon sandwich…right? Wait, Rabisu has been WHERE? Who's Dumuzi, and how did he get with Ishtar? He might not be the greatest dad, but he seemed like a pretty good person. Lugal, on the other hand, seems to be a lot more complicated. And if you're looking for another character to compare him to, maybe try…Ultron. The spoiler section starts at 00:49:37. Let's talk about that black market party and how utterly racist those old ladies were. What did we think of Daoud's reaction to it all? Did we believe Mo was really back when we first saw him again? The repercussions of this mistake are huge, and Lugal just makes it worse. And you thought Belet was full of rage before… Sik's changes happen slowly, but some of them are pretty cool. Okay, we have to talk about the asylum scene. What's Lugal's ultimate purpose? During that final confrontation, Sik wins in his own way. We thought we lost Mo all over again, but Sik wasn't gonna let that happen. How does this story end, and what could possibly be next? Interview with Sarwat Chadda (01:19:05) We're so excited to talk about Fury of the Dragon Goddess with Sarwat Chadda!! How does he get into (and stay in) the mood to write? Any go-to snacks? Sarwat gives us a great breakdown of what inspired this story. How did he balance the horror in this book for his audience? Which came first, this book or the short story with Rabisu? Sarwat talks a little bit about having Fury of the Dragon Goddess take place in London. And yes, he definitely remembers the Kane Chronicles! He also gives us a fantastic answer regarding the topic of repatriation. What did he want to accomplish with a character like Lugal? Can rage ever be used as a force for good? What makes Daoud so compelling? It's time to talk about those Percy Jackson references! Who would Sarwat choose from Greek mythology to have as a godly parent? Which Rick Riordan Presents book would he love to live inside? Any book recommendations for us? Has Sarwat thought about what comes next after Fury of the Dragon Goddess? You'll never guess how many more projects he has coming up! Thank you for talking with us, Sarwat! It was a pleasure. Feedback (02:25:58) We hear from a couple listeners about their experience reading Fury of the Dragon Goddess. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 95, in which we'll discuss which Rick Riordan Presents characters would make for the best team-ups, before jumping into The Red Pyramid chapter 18! Prophecy Radio episode #93 discusses City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda ahead of the sequel's release, Fury of the Dragon Goddess before catching you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including what sort of Percy Jackson and the Olympians content we got from San Diego Comic-Con 2023. This week, we're also talking about The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 17, in which the Kanes end up in Paris and run into an old friend. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:32) We're kicking off this week's news and updated by talking about SDCC. We had some boots on the ground at the convention and got a peek at what the campers were handing out. Next up, we talk in-depth about the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians character posters. Oh yeah, and there was even a flash mob! Don't forget that Fury of the Dragon Goddess comes out on August 1! Books of Wonder is hosting a virtual tour, and it's gonna be awesome. Read Riordan also posted an article about Lugal, the god of insanity. On June 27, Rick wrote a blog post talking about the Chalice of the Gods book tour. We go through all of the tour stops, plus the Boston Book Festival happening in October. Can Rick talk about the show on tour? We also think he'll be talking about his next project. Oh, and Karen will be at another stop! We also discuss whether we'll stop our The Red Pyramid discussion to talk about Chalice of the Gods. Don't forget to check out this Bookseller interview. City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda (00:23:38) Talking about this book has been a long time coming, and we're so glad to finally discuss it on the podcast! What's this book about? We talk about our overall feelings for the book and the writing. It's wild to think this was written before COVID. But don't worry, this book won't remind you too much of the pandemic. It's well worth reading the Foreword, if only to see what it was like to have Rick as a teacher. This book teaches us a lot about racism, being a hero, dealing with grief, and fighting for your home. It seems only right to kick off the character section by talking about Sikander Aziz. All work and no play makes Sik a tired boy. There's so much to love about Sik, but especially his compassion for other people. We draw some parallels between Sik and Samirah/Magnus Chase. Daoud seems only skin-deep at first glance, but we both loved him from the beginning. We also loved Belet, who has a killer roundhouse kick. She's so intense, but her and Sik balance each other out perfectly. SO. MANY. CATS. Kasusu is an amazing sword, and it reminds us a lot of another magical weapon from one of Rick's books. What's it like being both the goddess of love AND war? Ishtar is both amazing and terrifying. And then there's Nergal. Sure, he's the antagonist in this book, but he's also a necessary balance to the circle of life. The spoiler section starts at 01:04:05. If you're used to handling New Yorkers in the morning, you can definitely take on a pack of demons. SURPRISE, Sikander is immortal. We're a little smitten with Gilgamesh, not gonna lie. How do you accidentally end up in the afterlife? By taking the wrong train, of course. The scenes between Sik and Mo were incredible but also heartbreaking. THE BAGHDAD SAUCE. It wasn't easy to get the flower that grants immortality, but they did it. We learn something amazing about Mo and Daoud. Nergal is defeated in the most spectacular way. The end of the book gives us some interesting final moments between Sik and Daoud, his family, and even Belet. We're so happy City of the Plague God gets a sequel in Fury of the Dragon Goddess. It's fun to read the author's note, and Sarwat has some wonderful things to tell us about this book and about Rick Riordan. Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:35:18) This week, we're discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 17! Carter becomes a chicken again, and we talk about what this dream could mean. Carter gets in trouble with Zia, but it informs us a lot about her AND about him. Gods, her story is tragic, and now we're sad. Did someone steal Zia's memories? It's nice that Carter still remembers his mom. Are Carter and Zia going on a date!? Okay, it's time to leave and go to…Paris!? Thank the gods for Bast. Feedback (01:54:08) We got some wonderful mentions on Threads, and several people remind us how much they miss our old podcast, Book Hype. Did you know you can leave reviews for podcasts on Audible!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 94, in which we'll discuss Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda, before jumping into an interview with the man himself! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #92 catches you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, from upcoming Rick Riordan Presents books like Fury of the Dragon Goddess to the current WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes and what they mean for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series on Disney+. This week, we're also talking about The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 16, in which Zia embraces the singed-eyebrow look. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:06:26) Happy birthday, Annabeth Chase! Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda releases on August 1. Pre-order it here. Make sure you check out the virtual launch event for the book! Read Riordan has an article so you can refresh your memory on City of the Plague God. If you want play D&D with Sarwat Chadda, you can learn all the details here. You can also catch up with Daoud and meet Dumuzi, thanks to Read Riordan. Sarwat had a lot of wonderful things to say about being a part of the Rick Riordan Presents family. The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi got a starred review from Publisher's Weekly. Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro share their favorite recent reads. Be sure to check out the Boston Book Festival, where Rick will be a keynote speaker this year. Read Riordan is hitting it out of the park with this Chalice of the Gods articles, including the one about the New Rome University course guide. We have SO. MANY. IDEAS. Would you want John Rocco to do a special edition cover for Chalice of the Gods so it could match your original series? Someone needs to update this Percy Jackson guide to the Met Museum. Don't expect to see Nico and Bianca in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1. We're so happy Glynn Turman got to pick the horse he's working with on the show. Let's talk about Percy Jackson at San Diego Comic-Con 2023. Did you catch the new Percy Jackson poster and SDCC bag? Looks like there's a chance of Percy Jackson on Saturday. We get to see a slightly new image of the trio. And here's a picture of the Disney Books poster at SDCC 2023. Kristen breaks down new information about the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, plus what it means for us at the podcast. Huge thank you to Mel for asking us to go into detail about all of this! You can find the SAG-AFTRA strike rules on Variety. The biggest one to keep in mind is that if the studio is asking you to promote something, DON'T DO IT. Yes, the podcast will keep covering all the Percy Jackson and the Olympians news because we are just fans talking about what we love. What's the future of these strikes? D.B. Woodside had some really important information to share about why SAG is striking. What does all this mean for Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Why isn't Rick saying much about the show? What projects are on hold and which ones can he still work on? Why wasn't Rick Riordan at Comic-Con? We'll keep you updated with more information once it becomes available! Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:08:50) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 16. Put us down for not wanting to be woken up the way Zia wakes Sadie. Why didn't Carter sleep well? How do we get some bottled Thoth Water? That tongue tattoo was pretty cool. Either do what Zia tells you to…or die. What are the magicians' specialties and which can we unanimously agree is a no-go for us? There are some really great moments while Carter and Sadie learn to bring hierglyphs to life with magic. We're so happy we learned about Luxor/Thebes in our last episode. How strong is Zia, exactly? It's time to duel, and it definitely does not go according to plan. We learn a little bit more about the Kanes' familial background. Iskandar is dead, and even though we saw this coming, it's still sad. It also spells major trouble for the Kanes. Zia's willing to give them a five-minute head start, and that's about as good as it's going to get. Feedback (01:28:42) Tim writes in with a little What If… for The Last Olympian. Caoimhe also catches us up on her reactions to the last few episodes and gives us a great idea for a future one. It seems Bobbi is as big of a fan of Hapshetsut as we are. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 93, in which we'll discuss City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda, and then read The Red Pyramid chapter 17! Prophecy Radio episode #90 catches you up on all the latest news within the Riordanverse, including some Fury of the Dragon Goddess characters, as well as a possible location for one of the stops on the Chalice of the Gods book tour. Stay tuned for more information as we come across it! We also return to The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 14, in which a French guy almost kills the Kane siblings. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News & Updates (00:02:44) Happy birthday, Jason Grace! Oh—wait. Fury of the Dragon Goddess comes out on August 1. Are you ready for Rabisu and Lugal? Have you checked out Sarwat Chadda's newly designed website? Did you know you can get signed copies of Ballad & Dagger and Last Canto of the Dead from Daniel José Older's shop? Read Riordan wrote an article for incoming freshman at New Rome University. Are you following Orpheus Collar on Instagram? We know who will be the showrunner for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. Rick will be in Seattle for the Chalice of the Gods book tour. Becky has a controversial opinion about the Percy Jackson movies. Make sure you submit a question to the BBC for Rick to answer! Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:23:26) This week, we're tackling The Red Pyramid chapter 14. This is a classic Rick Riordan chapter title. It's so hard not to picture Hannibal Lecter now. The Hall of Ages is gorgeous, and we can't wait to see it on screen! We're really impressed with the visual timeline of Egypt. It's time to meet the Chief Lector and the French guy. HOW old is the Chief Lector!? Can Iskandar read Carter's mind? Why is Desjardins so weird!? He's giving…Cornelius Fudge. And while we're at it, why is it SO bad to consort with gods!? Fly or die! Or something like that. Feedback (00:46:40) Nicolaas agrees he isn't as familiar with Egyptian mythology as he is with Greek mythology. Thank you, Bobbi, for sending pictures of your kitties and your bunny! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 91, in which we'll discuss some of the major Egyptian monuments you should know about, and then read The Red Pyramid chapter 15! Prophecy Radio episode #88 gets back to Egyptian mythology by doing a Deep Dive on everyone's favorite cat goddess, Bast. Plus, we tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including the possibility that we could be getting a Chalice of the Gods sequel. This week, we also return to The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 12 and facing off with the scorpion deity Serqet. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:01:30) Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda got a Kirkus starred review! Read Riordan did a cute interview with Graci Kim. They also asked, “Who is the most powerful god or goddess in ther Riordanverse?“ DID YOU REMEMBER THAT THE NEW THE SUN AND THE STAR COVER GLOWS IN THE DARK BECAUSE WE DID NOT. Keep an eye on Rainbow Crate's socials for a possible reprint of The Sun and the Star with the new cover. The UK cover for Chalice of the Gods is spectacular, and we once again have to give major props to Khadijah Khatib. You can pre-order the exclusive edition from Waterstones. And if you want to see the original painting of the cover you can go to Khadi's Twitter. And we might've figured out what the mysterious book Rick is working on is. Variety reports that Disney and several other studios will not host panels at SDCC this year. Becky says Disney will still have a presence at the con, however. She also says she doesn't know anything about D23 yet. Deep Dive: Bast (00:17:04) We're super excited to talk about Bast, and—by association—Callie! We're already starting off on rough footing because we don't actually know the origins of her name. It makes a lot of sense that Bast is associated with Artemis. Weirdly enough, she started off as a lioness goddess of the SUN, not the moon. She's got some pretty recognizable family members. Bast has a lot of important roles in Egyptian society, which explains why she was so popular. Shoutout to Brendan Fraser in The Mummy! There seems to be some connection between Bast and alabaster. What symbols are usually associated with her? We didn't expect to see the word aegis again! Her transformation from a lion goddess to a domesticated cat goddess is super interesting. Can we not name deadly asteroids after the enemies of the sun god? Ancient Egyptians really, REALLY loved cats. Bubastis is such a cool name for a city, and it sounds like it was a fun place to hang out, too. Is it weird that an important component to Bast's temples was water? Karen wants more information on the festivals of Bast because they sound amazing. It makes so much sense that Bast is the first deity we really get to know in The Red Pyramid. Will she end up fighting Apophis? We hope Bast sticks around for all three books! Sources: Wikipedia | WorldHistory.org Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:41:15) This week, we're discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 12! Serqet is, like, SUPER creepy…but also a little awesome? Why is Sadie so drawn to help Zia, who is clearly holding her own just fine? How did Sadie know about the Seven Ribbons of Hathor? Regardless, Zia must be pretty powerful to be able to wield them. We wonder if Sadie's powers come from her mother and if it's a female lineage kind of thing. We already know who we want to play Bast in the Red Pyramid Netflix film. Kristen tries to make scorpions even scarier than they already are. Feedback (00:57:32) Thank you, Rachel, for sharing a picture of your cat! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 89, in which we'll discuss The Legend of Glynn Turman, and then read The Red Pyramid chapter 13! Prophecy Radio episode #83 discusses The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro, with both a spoiler-free and spoiler-filled section, as well as features an exclusive interview with the authors. We also discuss all the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick's official blog for the TSATS book tour. This week, we're skipping our The Red Pyramid chapter discussion in order to maximize our time with the new Nico di Angelo book! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:03:45) Do you want us to read Chalice of the Gods chapter by chapter in September? First off, we shoutout a couple birthdays and anniversaries from this past week. The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities is now in paperback (listen to Prophecy Radio episode #2 for our discussion). The Sun and the Star is a #1 NYT Bestseller! We do some cleanup following the Sun and the Star book tour, including this interview on Read Riordan. Rick also wrote a blog post on May 11 to talk about everything he experienced during the tour. Rick is already signing tip-ins for Chalice of the Gods, which doesn't come out until September. Read Riordan has an excerpt for Last Canto of the Dead by Daniel José Older, out on May 16. If you need to refresh your memory on Ballad & Dagger, you can listen to Prophecy Radio episode #33. J.C. Cervantes has an adult romance, The Enchanted Hacienda coming out the same day! Be sure to enter Sarwat Chadda's giveaway for Fury of the Dragon Goddess. We also talk about our own giveaway we're doing for The Sun and the Star! The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro (00:17:56) What is the book actually about? Go read the Sun and the Star book review that made mark Oshiro cry. Did we actually think it was Bob calling out to Nico? What did we think of Mr. D's characterization in this book? Were we excited to see Rachel again? Getting to talk about Sally Jackson on Mother's Day is next-level awesome. It was super interesting seeing Percy and Annabeth from Nico's point of view. Nico and Will's differing opinion of the Underworld was an obstacle, but not one that they couldn't overcome. Okay, so the Underworld is kind of scary, but it's also beautiful and full of life. Everyone loves an opposites-attract story, but what's that like in practice? Gorgyra's chapters were, surprisingly, one of our favorite parts of the book. It was so great getting to see Solangelo from their POV. If you've every experienced anxiety, depression, or PTSD, then the effects that Tartarus has on the demigods will feel very familiar to you. This book really tests Solangelo's relationship, but they continuously choose each other throughout it, and that's the most important part. The spoiler section starts at 00:59:21. We revisit the Mary Sue interview and get a little emotional about the title of the book. Persephone's Garden was a really wonderful, surprising addition to this book. Is there any world in which Will doesn't know “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” by Lil Nas X? It's time to talk about all of the wonderful and terrifying monsters in this book. The troglodytes were totally standouts, and we wouldn't mind seeing them again. Menoetes is dating WHO!?!? Amphithemis' character was so interesting, especially because his character didn't go in the direction we were especting. We discuss how the Aeternae ended up in this book and why they were the way they were. And here we thought Small Bob couldn't be anymore amazing than he already was. Bob went through so, so much while he was down in Tartarus. On the count of three, repeat after me: KAREN WAS RIGHT. Nyx really was the perfect villain for this book, and we have a wonderful discussion about how important it is to choose happiness. Can you believe even Nemesis and Epiales rebelled against their mother? We discuss Nico and his Coco Puffs. Didn't Bianca choose rebirth? What's up with her still being in Elysium? Hades was actually being a great father in this book, and we're all for it. That conversation between Piper and Nico at the end was SO IMPORTANT. The Sun and the Star interview with Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro (01:59:13) You can also read an edited transcript of it at this link. Rick and Mark had so many nice things to say to each other, and it was so lovely to witness. It's also amazing how much of a collaboration this story was, and we love it! Is there any chance that we could get more standalone novels in the future? (Karen has some ideas.) What did Mark and Rick learn from each other? Becky is a genius and she deserves ALL the credit. Oh, and we can thank Mark for Nico's flashback. We find out the exact moment Mark decided to do the book. That final scene between Nico and Piper is so, so good. Feedback (02:29:01) You can always leave comments for previous episodes! We love that a lot of older fans are finding our podcast. We're still totally willing to do that doughnut episode. Who had the better arc, Nico or Lester? Would we want a Thalia standalone novel? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 83, where we'll talk about The Sun and the Star (with spoiler-free AND spoiler-filled sections), plus an interview with Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #81 catches you up on everything you need to know about The Sun and the Star—with both a spoiler-free and spoiler-filled section. We also discuss all the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick and Becky's trip to Ireland and Karen's plans for the TSATS book tour. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 8! Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:01:32) Sarwat Chadda received a starred review from Kirkus for Fury of the Dragon Goddess! Be sure to read Rick's April 22 blog post to learn about his and Becky's trip to Ireland. We get a miniature update for the adaptation of “My Life as a Child Outlaw,” the short story from Cursed Carnivals and Other Calamities. The Sun and the Star book tour is right around the corner! Stay tuned to win some swag from the book tour! Waterstones is offering a signed edition of the UK version of TSATS, so be sure to pre-order that ASAP! Plus, sign up for Rick's newsletter on his UK site for a possible look at The Sun and the Star chapter 1. Barnes & Noble is having a sale on pre-orders, so be sure to take advantage of it! Don't worry, we'll talk about Nemesis in the next section! Everything you need to know about The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro (00:13:58) This first part of the discussion is just a refresher of what has happened in previous books (so there are no spoilers for TSATS). The Sun and the Star synopsis gives nothing away but definitely entices you to read. Read Riordan did an OTP timelines article about Nico and Will, which was super helpful. “The Sword of Hades” is a super helpful short story to read ahead of The Sun and the Star. In The Son of Neptune, Nico goes to Tartarus for the first time. Remember how great House of Hades is? Could you imagine if Nico had left forever after The Blood of Olympus? Nico is in a good chunk of the first and last books of The Trials of Apollo series. In The Tower of Nero, we learn that Nico is suffering from PTSD. Rick really set up The Sun and the Star in that final book in more than one way! The troglodytes are super important in defeating Nero. Which books are the most important to reread ahead of The Sun and the Star? At this point, we announce that you may not want to keep listening if you're avoiding all spoilers from the officially released articles. (Skip to the chapter discussion, if so!) According to Read Riordan, it's going to be important to know Bianca's di Angelo's backstory. We learned A LOT about The Sun and the Star from the Amphithemus entry on Read Riordan. Hypnos is gonna show up in the story, but we're much more worried about Epiales. Then there's Gorgyra, and all we care about is what the real estate prices are like at the edge of Tartarus. Maybe it's worth it? The Sun and the Star is a book for Solangelo fans. Will Gorgyra end up being an ally? Now it's finally time to talk about Nemesis. Who's in need of dealing with their inner balance? Listen to our full discussion of The Sun and the Star chapter 1. Who will be the villain in this story, and how big of a threat could they pose if this is meant to be a standalone novel? We read your wildest theories for The Sun and the Star. Will this all be a fever dream? Could Mark and Rick pull from the Orpheus myth for the end of this book? Will Bianca come back from the dead? We know we'll learn Will's sexuality in The Sun and the Star. What would Nico look like as a doughnut? Is Small Bob gonna be Big Bob now? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (01:16:12) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 8. Karen gets a flashback to The Land Before Time. Poor Philip of Macedonia. How cool (and stressful) would it be to have a little shabti go retrieve the actual artifacts you're looking for? Ermahgerd, serpopards! Amos' magic kind of sucks, tbh. Thank the gods for Bast! This chapter was super fun and had a lot of great moments and lines. Feedback (01:29:46) Thank you, Stephanie, for tuning in and giving us such a lovely compliment! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 82, in which we'll discuss the Boston The Sun and the Star book tour stop before discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 8. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #80 takes a look at The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones graphic novel, and has a chat with Ethan Young, who adapted and illustrated the book. We also catch up on all the latest Riordanverse news, including the cover, synopsis, and release date for A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 7! Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:03:32) Karen regales Kristen with her tale of visiting the Field Museum in Chicago and going through the Ancient Egypt exhibit. Happy birthday to Toby Stephens, who will play Poseidon in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Did you catch the A Drop of Venom cover reveal? Sajni Patel's first book for Rick Riordan Presents is going to be a stunner! Do Hades and Persephone have good advice for long-distance relationships? We also get to meet Gorgyra, who will show up in The Sun and the Star. Could Bear McCreary be working on Percy Jackson and the Olympians? This is also your reminder that Ballad & Dagger is now out in paperback! The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones + Interview with Ethan Young (00:09:59) Neither Kristen nor Karen had read The 39 Clues before, so this was a good time to check out the story via the graphic novel. Did you think there were 39 books in this series? If so, you're not alone (or that far off)! Sarwat Chadda wrote a book in The 39 Clues series! Will there ever be a movie (or television) adaptation? We give you a brief overview of what happens to kick off The Maze of Bones. Would we take the money or take the clue? If you like National Treasure, there's no way you wouldn't love The 39 Clues series. This series is a lot more global, which makes for a lot of interesting adventures. Plus, all the different clans and family members made everything a lot trickier! We both totally want to keep reading the graphic novels to find out what happens next! Make sure you check out the 39 Clues website! Now it's time to talk to Ethan Young, who adapted and illustrated The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan. Are there any designs that really stand out to him after all these years? What's the most important part of tackling the kinds of projects he's done in the past? Is there ever any time for personal artwork outside of commissions? How does Ethan avoid burnout? What made Ethan interested in adapting The Maze of Bones? What is the process like for adapting a book into a graphic novel? We're so lucky to have smart phones these days. Was Rick involved in the process of adapting this at all? Why are graphic novels so important for people who love (or maybe don't love) to read? Which of the characters were Ethan's favorite to illustrate? Did Ethan have a favorite location? We also take some time to talk about the potential sequel to Maze of Bones and whether Ethan will be attached to future adaptations. Who would Ethan want to have as a godly parent? Which graphic novels does he recommend? What about artists to watch? We take some time to shout out all the amazing Percy Jackson fan artists! If you remember being on MySpace, you might be old… What are some of Ethan's dream projects? And what else does he having coming up next? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (01:02:22) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 7. Carter and Sadie are definitely very different people. Muffin is like a canary in a coal mine, and Kristen is paying attention. Sadie was a little scary in this chapter! Carter should've been WAY more cautious about curses and booby traps. Why do Egyptians walk the way they do? There seems to be a lot more going on inside Doughboy than most gollum-type creatures. Do we really think Julius is dead? Did you know how to pronounce cartouche? What would you do if you found out you were descended from the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt? Teach kids cursive! It could save their lives! This story about Nut and Geb's children overthrowing Ra sounds a little familiar… Put us down as not wanting to stay pregnant forever. The story about how Nut made it a 365-day year is pretty awesome. FINALLY WE KNOW WHO THE FIERY MAN IS. Feedback (01:29:46) Henry suggests we watch House of Anubis. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 81, in which we'll talk about everything we know so far The Sun and the Star before discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 8. City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda by Anna and Em
It's finally here, it's our Greek myth episode! We kick it all off with Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, a titan of early 2000s kids' fantasy that we were a smidge too old for at the time that it came out. We referred to it too when we did our School Stories special if you want to hear more about that kind of stuff. We also compare it to City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda which we talked about on an episode of Fantasy Book Swap with Ali Baker. Then, we get to read a few poems from Echo Echo by Marilyn Singer and Josee Masse and hear Matt do the speediest backpedalling to date on the podcast! Prophecy Radio episode #64 takes a look ahead at all the projects we know are coming up in 2023, as well as our goals for the year as a podcast! This week, we're skipping the news since we're recording ahead of time, and we'll catch up on that in a couple weeks. But don't worry! We're still going to reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 18. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. Looking ahead to 2023 (00:02:07) On January 10, The Sword of Hades will be re-released with a The Sun and the Star sneak peek. Are you going to pre-order it? One of the biggest books to come out this year will be The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro, which will release on May 2. Here's everything we know about The Sun and the Star so far. We speculate what we might get when we read Chalice of the Gods, which comes out on September 26. And let's not forget the Rick Riordan Presents imprint! What books can we look forward to in 2023? First up on the list is Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee, who will be releasing her first book under RRP. We loved Ballad & Dagger, so it should come as no surprise that Last Canto of the Dead by Daniel José Older is at the top of our lists for 2023. Next up, we have The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim, which will wrap up the Gifted Clans series. Roshani Chokshi is writing another book for RRP, this time about Filipino mythology! Obviously we can't wait for the second book in the Serwa Boateng series by Roseanne A. Brown. And maybe it won't be the last! We really need to read City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda…if only so we can read Fury of the Dragon Goddess. This fall, we can also expect Pahua and the Dragon's Secret by Lori M. Lee to hit store shelves. Moko Magic by Tracey Baptiste also promises to be great, and we wonder if there will be any similarities to Ballad & Dagger. And even though we haven't covered the books yet on the podcast, we're excited for the next book in the Shadow Bruja series by J.C. Cervantes. Many of the Rick Riordan Presents authors have OTHER books coming out outside of the imprint. Which ones are we most looking forward to? First up, Roshani Chokshi gives us a Valentine's Day treat with The Last Tale of the Flower Bride. And then there's Tehlor Kay Mejia's Lucha of the Night Forest, out on March 21. And then there's Into the Light by Mark Oshiro, which has mushrooms on the cover, so you know it's going to be cool. What announcements for Percy Jackson and the Olympians do we think we'll get in 2023? They have to tell us who Zeus and Poseidon are eventually, right?? Could we get a trailer by the end of the year? Will Percy Jackson attend SDCC? Will they be at D23 again? What if they did monster reveals!? Make sure you check out Aryan's show on Paramount+, Adventures in Wonder Park. When could we expect a season 2 greenlight? As far as the Red Pyramid film coming to Netflix, we can probably expect the script to be finished. But we know it's not coming out in 2023, so we need to be patient! What about a director? Or any casting announcements? What's Prophecy Radio hoping to accomplish next year? We want to bring as many exclusives to you as we possibly can! But we're super excited to start The Kane Chronicles. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:54:52) We're talking about The Last Olympian chapter 18. How can Clarisse survive being turned into a block of ice? Chiron standing in between Kronos and Mount Olympus is pretty badass. Annabeth gave it a good old college try, but it just wasn't enough. How could you not LOVE AND RESPECT Nico di Angelo until the ends of the Earth after this scene?? Seeing Demeter and Persephone in action was pretty cool. And speaking of badasses—Paul and Sally can totally handle their own! Why does Ethan Nakamura have such a place of honor amongst Kronos' army? We need more fanart from the Battle of Manhattan! Feedback (01:19:49) A positive guy says he's really looking forward to Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem and Fury of the Dragon Goddess. Meanwhile, Phoebe's got her heart set on The Sun and the Star. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 65, where we'll discuss the Lightning Thief illustrated edition, as well as the graphic novel! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #57 does a Deep Dive on Hermes, which couldn't come at a better time since Lin-Manuel Miranda was just cast in the role for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show airing on Disney+ in 2024. In addition to talking about this latest bit of news, we also discuss the cover for Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 11. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:39) Read Riordan posted Ares' guide to fatherhood, and it's just about as helpful as you would think. What did you think of the new Ares/Clarisse artwork? They also posted the cover for Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda, the sequel to City of the Plague God. Sarwat is super excited for this book, and so are we! Did you catch the video of Rick trolling us for the big casting announcement? Okay, let's talk about the November 7 blog post. Yes, Lin-Manuel Miranda has been cast as Hermes in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. This is quite a surprise, since in the books, he doesn't show up until Sea of Monsters. What could this mean for the rest of the casting, especially the Big Three? We love that Lin's kid is a fan of the books! What scene could Percy, Annabeth, and Hermes have together? Annabeth's reaction to Hermes is going to be VERY interesting. Deadline has a better description of Hermes' role in the show. Becky reminds everyone to be kind, and we discuss why some people aren't happy about the casting. Deep Dive: Hermes (00:26:12) Let's find out how Hermes ended up going to Juvie. Literally, what is Hermes NOT the god of?? We really love learning new words, can't you tell? Wait. One of his symbols is the WHAT? Hermes accomplished a lot as a baby and none of it was good. IS Hermes the god of cheeseburgers!? It's cool that Argus is tied into this myth, and we can't wait to see how he's portrayed in the show. Hermes could seriously use a little self-reflection. He's had a lot of children with a lot of women, and not all of it was consensual. As always, please bear with us regarding the pronunciation. We're trying! At what times does Hermes show up throughout the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles? We also get Hermes' physical description, and it reminds us of someone who is decidedly not Lin-Manuel Miranda. Can Hermes unlock any phone or computer? How do their powers work with modern technology? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:49:11) It's time to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 11. Thank goodness for Blackjack because he saved the day multiple times. Are we more or less annoyed at Clarisse after this chapter? Oh, it's PERSONAL between Percy and the Minotaur. The necklaces on the Minotaur's axe?? OH, IT'S ON. How do those spoils of war work? Was the battle with the Minotaur anticlimactic, or was this on purpose? Percy has given Ethan SO many chances, the least he could do is NOT stab Annabeth!! Is it Kronos or the Kool-Aid Man? YOU DECIDE! The realities of war are heavy in this chapter, and it's especially hard when you're battling your friends and peers. Yet another named character has bitten the dust. Stakes are high. It's a good thing Pegasi gallop when they fly because the alternative is a little strange to imagine. Feedback (01:20:04) Nicolaas reminds us that we'll see the video shield again in the “Staff of Hermes” short story. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 58, where we'll come up with some recipes we think are worthy of the gods. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then do a deep dive on the god of war himself, Ares (plus fancast him for Percy Jackson and the Olympians), as well as read Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapters 17 and 18. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:47) Did anyone enjoy #TitansCurseWeek? Oh well, hope you're prepared for #BattleOfTheLabyrinthWeek! If you've read Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality, then you already know who Rudy Rocks is. With Ballad and Dagger coming out this week, it's time to meet Mateo Matisse and Chela Hidalgo. We also got some great book news this week! First up, Pahua and the Soul Stealer by Lori M. Lee is getting TWO sequels. We also have an official title for City of the Plague God book 2. Plus, Sarwat Chadda is designing his own cover! Then Kristen surprises Karen with even more news—Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee is getting a sequel. Everyone is highly anticipating Percy Jackson and the Olympians casting, especially because we just found out our Grover is headed to Vancouver. And don't worry! There WILL be more updates soon. By the way, Rick doesn't mind if the cast of the musical (or probably the show) signs your books! How do we get our hands on some blue candy? Becky and the kids helped Rick with research for Sea of Monsters! Isn't that nice? Say hello to the Koningsdam. Walker Scobell did an interview with Rolling Stone in which he talked about reading Percy Jackson for the first time. Deep Dive: Ares (00:17:29) Ares was a fun god to do, especially after the craziness that was Zeus. What does Ares look like according to Greek mythology? Why does Ares have so many sacred animals? We debate poisonous versus venomous. We also learn the differences between Ares and Athena, as deities of war. Ares is so much more than just the god of war. Is Ares a coward? Ares' fortress in Thrace sounds kind of awesome, to be honest. What would YOU be the god of? You won't be too surprised when you learn who worshiped Ares. We don't want to know how Ares wound up with dragon sons. Now we know who to blame for those skeleton warriors, and it isn't Ares!! It should come as no surprise that Ares was put on trial for murder. What is Ares like in the Percy Jackson books? It's always interesting how we envision characters in a book differently than they're described. A baseball bat is the perfect weapon for his spear to turn into. Wait, how big is his motorcycle!? Never forget the seat made of Caucasian human skin. Ares is definitely an iconic character. Karen's first pick would be perfect based on looks alone, but he's a little too old. Meanwhile, Kristen's least likely pick would be awesome but he doesn't usually play outright villains. Karen's next pick is a Sons of Anarchy alum, but maybe not the one you're thinking. Kristen's next choice is definitely a pretty boy, but she's very certain he could pull off being Ares. The first person Karen thought of is someone we all know, and he's played good guys and bad guys alike. We take a break and play a little bit of word association. Kristen's next pick is used to playing big, intimidating characters. Karen's top choice will come as no surprise to anyone who knows her. Kristen's final choice has played an extremely evil character in the past. We had a listener write in with her own pick for Ares! Never Doubt Rick Riordan. Chapter Reviews (01:03:52) We're getting close to the end of the book! Starting off, let's get into Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapter 17. Thalia seems a lot more herself in this chapter. “The sky still yearns to embrace the earth.” We discuss the importance of that grey streak in Annabeth's hair. Why did Percy's sword fail him? Percy is so brave! He's such a fantastic character. Thank goodness for Mr. Chase. Thalia versus Luke was a pretty awesome scene. How would we have felt if Luke had died at the end of this chapter? Is that REALLY where the story of Santa Clause came from? It's so amazing to see how far Percy has come with Thalia and Zoë. Now it's time for Titan's Curse chapter 18. This one was pretty rough. But once again we have to shout-out Mr. Chase trying his best. How does one monster-proof a house? Asking for a friend. Annabeth ran away for the first time when she was seven. Is her dad really the same person he was back then? The fact that their relationship is messy is actually quite realistic, and it's good for kids to see in media. Zoë's death scene was brutal. How long did she know she was the one from the prophecy? We get to meet some new pegasi. Annabeth and Percy should've hugged!! So, Luke is totally not dead. What now!? And why was Annabeth so certain about that? Would Percy have felt Luke deserved to die if he hadn't just lost Bianca and Zoë? Karen's up to her usual terrible jokes. Feedback (01:45:40) Jessica asks us how long Annabeth held up the sky, and we try our best to figure it out. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 31, where we'll do a deep dive on the god Hades and discuss our fancasting for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then talk about the dreaded Sea of Monsters movie, as well as kick off their Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse reread with chapters 1 and 2. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:39) We've got a huge episode in front of us, so let's get into it! Sarwat Chadda is still working on City of the Plague Gods 2, but we're a little confused about the title. Kwame Mbalia and Roseanne A. Brown talk about what Black History Month means to them. If only our days in the office looked like Rick's. Tehlor Kay Mejia is writing her bi disaster adult debut, and we are very excited. Don't forget to check out Karen's Reclaim the Stars book review. Ashlee Latimer is giving away a copy of her new picture book! We're surprised that Rick already has a new blog post up, but we're excited to get into it! There is no typical work day for Rick, which sounds awesome and stressful. We talk a bit about all the script edits they're currently working on. The Solangelo book is going to be LONG, and we're here for it. We get an interesting insight into how they start to break an episode. Apparently, Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+ will be eight episodes long. Rick also broke his toe, and we hope he feels better soon! Writing is never really done, it's just due. We can't imagine how many submission tapes they're going through—but it's a lot. Soon, we're going to talk about our dream cast for the adult roles in the show. How long do we think the filming for this show will take? Rick wrote Goodreads reviews for Ballad & Dagger and Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting. Becky does a lot, too! We see you, Becky. Thank you. Sea of Monsters movie (00:32:06) Did we like the Sea of Monsters movie better than the Lightning Thief movie? It was nice to see Thalia turning into the tree, but that opening was so dark. Let's meet all the new Sea of Monsters characters. Clarisse was pretty great, but we hope TV!Clarisse is a little stockier. We really missed the chariot races. Is there anyone who doesn't love Stanley Tucci? We kind of didn't mind that someone else is playing Chiron in this movie. The tone was definitely better in this movie. But how did we feel about Tyson? Have you ever thought about how a cyclops would wear sunglasses? And the whole barrier situation doesn't really work in the movie. The Colchis Bull fight had its highs and lows. We're still disappointed about Grover's storylines in these movies. Was it weird that Mr. D took over part of Tantalus' plot in the movie? How did we feel about the oracle? Kronos' aesthetic was…a choice. Nathan Fillion was truly an inspired choice for Hermes. Did Annabeth maim Thalia? Can the show create as good a Rainbow as the movie??? Did the filmmakers not know how to pronounce Riordan? Who doesn't love Ron Perlman as Hellboy?? Tyson's death in the movie was so pointless. Ugh, this was not our Annabeth. Not at all. The battle at the end with Kronos was so unnecessary. Does anyone here watch Station 19? Did we like Thalia at the end of the movie? How do we feel about the Percy voiceover? We are officially done with the movies! Chapter Reviews (01:24:06) Let's get into Titan's Curse chapter 1! Does this chapter start rather abruptly? We were shocked to learn Nico and Bianca were introduced so early! Controlling the Mist is a pretty big deal. We love book!Annabeth so much. The Ground Zero reference was effective. Dancing is hard. Time for Titan's Curse chapter 2! Shout-out to Onward for teaching us what a manticore is. We need a Rules for the Empathy Link pamphlet. The Hunters of Artemis definitely have great posture. We really wanted to reach the next chapter after that ending! Do your homework! And read lots of MG and YA books. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 23, where we'll do another What If…? episode centered around Sea of Monsters. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then list out all the companion books, short stories, and illustrated editions we have so far, as well as analyze chapters 5 and 6 of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:15) Karen and Kristen are throwing responsibility out the window forever! Aru Shah and the End of Time graphic novel debuted at #1 on Amazon! Daughter of the Deep jumped to #1 on the NYT bestsellers list. Sarwat Chadda is working on the next draft of Rise of the Chaos Goddess. We get a fantastic update about the Solangelo book. We're really excited to check in with other characters too. Kristen and Karen think they're hilarious. The Percy Jackson Disney+ show's writers room is back at it again! Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting sounds great. We take a quick moment to shout out In Every Generation by Kendare Blake. Companion books, short stories, illustrated editions, oh my! (00:07:43) The Demigod Files includes three short stories, all of which sound great! We've read most of these, but it's been a while, so we don't remember them as well as we'd like. But Clarisse and Percy together is bound to be a lot of fun. (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) Oh, hey there, Charles Beckendorf! We get a wild Festus sighting, and we're so happy. How much did the Lightning Thief movie pull from “Sword of Hades” for Persephone's character? Don't forget, you can check these out at your local library! The Ultimate Guide is so much fun and a great collector's item. It's also very practical and incredibly useful! There is a cursed picture of Karen dressed as a daughter of Hephaestus for Halloween. We go off on a Beanie Baby tangent. “Percy Jackson and the Singer Apollo” is full of chaos, and we love it. Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods and Greek Heroes are SO PRETTY. Who HASN'T read Percy Jackson? Camp Half-Blood Confidential is another good pocket guide to keep on hand. Plus, there's the coloring book, with art by Keith Robinson. We only have the Lightning Thief illustrated edition and it's a TRAVESTY. John Rocco says there are no current plans to do more. Nobody would complain about more John Rocco art. Not to get ahead of ourselves, but we need a Percy Jackson Land at Disney World. We might have to do a whole episode on that idea. Let's dive into the Heroes of Olympus series now! We kick off with The Demigod Diaries, and “The Diary of Luke Castellan.” We'll be talking about this one in-depth soon! Hera is always messing things up. Ever heard of the bacchanalia? “The Son of Magic” was written by Rick's son! It's a fan-favorite. The Demigods of Olympus app might be long-gone. Time for the Kane Chronicles books! The Survival Guide is another awesome book to have on hand. Justice for Magnus Chase! Kristen will have to read the Kane Chronicles soon! The crossover short stories were a VERY BIG DEAL back in the day. But where's our crossover SERIES? Where's the Riordan Literary Universe (RLU)? And then Karen brings us all down. MOVING ON. We love Magnus Chase so much, and luckily there are some great guides for it. Einherjar is a very difficult word to say. There's always time for new books down the line! Did we…do a good job!? Let's talk graphic novels and why WE NEED MORE. Shhh, we're not allowed to have other interests! Chapter Reviews (00:38:13) Let's talk about Sea of Monsters chapter 5! Karen's living for Kristen's recaps. Everyone knows that feeling when your mom cleans your room against your will. Camp Half-Blood isn't a safe space anymore. Goodbye FOR NOW. Despite being “immortal,” it's so interesting how gods must rely on mortal worship to keep them going. We are not fans of Tantalus. Is Mr. D trying to comfort Tantalus, or is he giving him false hope? Can everyone please stop being mean to Tyson!? Are the other campers jealous of Tyson? We shouldn't be so cavalier about death. We are very happy to meet Charles Beckendorf again. We go on a Sponge-Bob tangent but Karen had to prove she has a brain. Time for chapter 6! BRAIN WORKS. Karen is very mad at Percy. BUT this is a good lesson for kids to learn. Karen was the annoying little brother. Lowercase pegasus versus capital letter Pegasus. Team Percabeth breaks up very quickly. Tyson gets a stick! Karen does not want to talk about the birdnado. Rick did Dean Martin dirty. Prophecy Count: 7 A lot has already happened in these first six chapters. We were feeling a lot of emotions today. And we have some feedback to go through! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 15, in which we'll discuss Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee and “The Initiative” from Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz talk about what's new in the Percy Jackson fandom, discuss all the books the Rick Riordan Presents authors have written outside of the Disney imprint, and analyze chapters 13 and 14 of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:07) This might be the longest doc we've had so far. First and foremost, we have news from Rick's blog! There's no current plan for a Daughter of the Deep sequel, but never say never! The Lords of Night: A Shadow Bruja Novel and Serwa Boateng's Guide of Vampire Hunting have official release dates and synopses. We have an official update on where in the process the Nico di Angelo book currently is. The book is at 117,000 words. How many pages is that? We're probably not getting anymore Percy Jackson television show news until 2022. That includes no news for Disney+ Day. BUT we know Becky and Rick have reviewed some casting callback tapes. Read Riordan has spotlights on Nelinha, Ester, and Gemini. The Last Fallen Star is officially in New Zealand! You can sing to the karaoke version of The Lightning Thief Musical! (Edit: Apparently this is from 2019, and we had no idea!) “Forget Horse Girls, Embrace the Mythology Freak” by Jenny G. Zhang (here's the tweet) Sorry, Frank. Why did we like mythology so much, and what do all the mythology freaks have in common? (Say hi to Callie!) Rick Riordan Presents authors' other series (00:18:47) We're really excited about all the books, novellas, anthologies, and short stories these authors have written. But fair warning: There are A LOT. Anthologies have really made a resurgence lately, and we're into it. Up first is Roshani Chokshi, who wrote the Pandava Quintet/Aru Shah books! She's got some other stories here about Hindu mythology that might be for older audiences. And one of her books definitely gives Six of Crows vibes, if you're into that! Next up is J.C. Cervantes! Look, sometimes words are hard. Karen just wants to keep Kristen on her toes. Yoon Ha Lee, who wrote Dragon Pearl, is a very prolific writer. There's a lot of sci-fi here, and some really cool concepts. Kristen gets her mind blown, repeatedly. Festus, is that you? Thank the gods for Wikipedia. Next on our happy hit parade is Carlos Hernandez, who wrote Sal & Gabi. Karen learned a fun fact about him, and she is very excited. Short stories can get W E I R D. Kwame Mbalia wrote the Tristan Strong series, as well as some other cool books. Black Boy Joy seems like a really important book to have right now. You might as well just assume almost everyone has written short stories. Tehlor Kay Mejia wrote the Paola Santiago series, and she's up next. She's got some great titles. If you liked Dumplin', then you might like Miss Meteor. Forests are so cool and creepy. Karen gets a book idea in the middle of recording. Graci Kim wrote the Gifted Clan series, and Karen has a quick aside about the last book in the series. She hasn't written any other books, but we have some fun facts to share about her! Who knew running away to the circus was so common? Rebecca Roanhorse wrote Race to the Sun, and a lot more!. You should watch Love and Monsters. And then go read Roar by Cora Carmack. We love a good title. And a good name. How do we feel about historical fiction? Here's LeVar Burton reading “Wherein Abigail…,” “Takeback Tango,” and “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience ™.” Sarwat Chadda wrote City of the Plague God, as well as some other interesting books! Have you seen A Little Princess? Shoutout to Animorphs! More short stories! More anthologies! Next up is Lori M. Lee, who wrote Pahua and the Soul Stealer. She's a busy lady, but she does plan to finish her Gates of Thread and Stone series. See? Forests are creepy! Yeah, you should definitely read A Thousand Beginnings and Endings. Roseanne A. Brown wrote Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting, which we are very excited about. She also just finished up her duology in her A Song of Wraiths and Ruin series. They have some incredibly stunning covers. It's so cool that so many of these authors have written for Marvel and Star Wars, too. Daniel José Older wrote Ballad & Dagger, which definitely has some shared threads with one of his other series. If you're looking for an adult series, look no further than Bone Street Rumba! Daniel has written *all* kinds of books. Well-behaved spirits are super lame. Who else loves Waterworld?? Stacey Lee will be writing Winston Chu Versus the Whimsies, and Karen's definitely heard of her books before. Bridgerton might be a little spicy for our younger listeners. Historical fiction about non-white stories are always interesting reads. Everyone is running away to the circus! Karen brings the whole podcast down. Lastly, we've got Tracey Baptiste, who will be writing Moko Magic. Lots of jumbies here! Let's throw in some Minecraft, shall we? More jumbies! Plus, some non-fiction! We did it! We made it! We hope you found your next read. If you've read any of these, let us know which ones we should start with! Chapter Reviews (01:19:21) Let's talk about The Lightning Thief chapters 13 and 14. Grover sleeps a lot. Thank the gods for Annabeth. That chimera? No, thank you. Ohio reference! Karen breaks Kristen. It's always interesting when the female goddesses give birth to the demigods. Annabeth's childhood sounds rough, and it's so sad. But we can't wait to see her relationship with her father improve. Percy doesn't want to be enemies! What, exactly, is Poseidon's domain? Prophecy Count: 4 Percy can see through the Mist a lot better now. The dark is very scary. Percy really needed to take this moment to reflect on everything that's happening to him. Who was the woman in the water? How did that lady see through the Mist? But, seriously, how exactly does the Mist work? How has Percy never noticed he can breathe underwater? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 8, which will discuss some Daughter of the Deep spoilers. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz are back once again to update you on the latest news (including some Percy Jackson television tidbits), discuss Daughter of the Deep (don't worry, it's spoiler-free!), and analyze chapters seven and eight of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates Have you met Granny Z from Tristan Strong? Be sure to check out #Olympiantober2021 for some amazing artwork! The Storm Runner series by J.C. Cervantes is now in paperback. Daniel José Older wrote a Star Wars story called Trail of Shadows. Sarwat Chadda finished writing Rise of the Chaos Goddess! Rick has a new update from his blog on October 24, 2021! Don't forget about the October 25 media tour! Aditi Brennan Kapil is co-writing Daughter of the Deep with Rick. They're currently looking for a screenwriter to go over the Kane Chronicles script. Rick and Co. visited ILM's “Volume” stage. Filming MIGHT begin in June 2022 if we get a greenlight by Jan. 2022. They're filming in Vancouver. There are a lot of trees there. We can't wait to see what the creatures will look like! Daughter of the Deep This episode is as spoiler-free as possible, but you've been warned! What's Daughter of the Deep about, exactly? Let's talk about the Houses and which one didn't feel quite right at first. Which house did they THINK they would be? Karen and Kristen take the Daughter of the Deep house quiz. Now it's time to talk about some of the characters. Ana Dakkar was an incredible main character. Karen has one tiny criticism, but she feels better now that she's talked it out. Ester is one of the best characters in the book, hands down. And don't forget little Top! (Is he based on someone we know?) Nelinha is a BABE, and she's such a cool and supportive friend. Gem was not at all what he seemed at first. Animal sidekicks for the win! It's hard not to talk about them, but we don't want to ruin some of the surprises. Karen thinks this book was pretty violent at times, but Kristen has a good counterargument. The diversity of characters was amazing, and it's going to look so good on screen. The language usage in this book was incredible, especially because Rick could write in Italian and Irish. Roshani Chokshi served as a sensitivity reader, and her enthusiasm was palpable. How did Rick do when it came to writing a character so unlike himself? Jules Verne's books exist in the world of Daughter of the Deep and that's kinda trippy. At the end of the day, what is this book about? Is there any chance for a Daughter of the Deep sequel? Chapter Reviews This week, Karen and Kristen discuss The Lightning Thief chapters 7 and 8. What would it be like to have your dad at camp ALL THE TIME? Also, Mr. D is a far cry from Dumbledore (but maybe that's a good thing). Kristen is very passionate about her theory regarding the Naiads at the bottom of the lake. So, Luke hates prophecies, huh? Annabeth has the BEST battle plans. Capture the flag seems fun but also very, very dangerous. Did Clarisse learn NOTHING? Is Poseidon just being a drama king? Zeus gets off way too easily. Who else is a demigod besides Houdini? Karen cried. Don't forget about the heckpuppy. (Please let us know who the artist is!) Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 5, which will go more in-depth about the Nico di Angelo standalone novel. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz do a take two on this episode, updating you on the latest news (including that big Nico di Angelo reveal), discuss Rick Riordan Presents and all the amazing series and authors that go along with it, and analyze chapters five and six of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates Karen sort of maybe kind of possibly lost the first version of this episode. The Tristan Strong Keeps Punching paperback is available now! BE WARNED: Due to COVID-related printing delays, you'll want to order your books for the holidays ASAP. Daughter of the Deep‘s U.S. release date is Oct. 26. Please don't share any spoilers! Subjectify will have a spoiler-free review up on that date. Have you met King Cotton yet? All the Cursed Carnival authors are now all NYT bestsellers! We attended the Daughter of the Deep virtual event. Have YOU read Mysterious Island? Robert Ballard is SO. COOL. And definitely a son of Poseidon Octopuses are a little creepy. Cool. But creepy. Daughter of the Deep has been optioned for a Disney+ feature film! *Insert firework sounds* We'll probably get more background information from the Percy Jackson show than we got from the books. We're gonna keep talking about Teen Wolf. Sorry not sorry. We're still trying to be patient about casting. The Percy Jackson world lends itself to animation, and we stand by that. But The Kane Chronicles is definitely a live-action film. Yes, we heard about the Nico di Angelo news. We know a little bit about the process behind this co-writing venture. Mark Oshiro seems super cool. The year 2023 is going to be JAM-PACKED. Rick is working on something related to Irish mythology, but we don't have much information yet. Rick Riordan Presents Did you notice Karen got a new mic!? Rick Riordan Presents is a beast of an imprint, and we love it so much. #NotAPhase Let's jump into the books from this imprint that Karen HAS read. The Pandava Quintet by Roshani Chokshi is definitely a favorite. Have you listened to Prophecy Radio episode 2, where we talk about Cursed Carnival? Paola Santiago gets to explore such a spooky and cool world. Beware cliffhangers! Graci Kim is cool and she loves food and Karen loves food and you should read The Last Fallen Star. Witches! Magic! Baked goods! Dragon Pearl is getting a sequel! Karen got an ARC of Tiger Honor and did a little dance. Kristen explains what the heck an ARC is. We have a soft spot for fox spirits. Karen has read The Storm Runner and totally meant to keep reading the series, but life got in the way. This series is also getting a spinoff duology! Zane's destiny is kind of a buzzkill. It pains Karen every. single. day. that she hasn't finished the Sal and Gabi series. Sometimes staying up to date on all these books is hard. P.S. Let us know how you want us to handle talking about the individual series in the future! Tristan Strong by Kwame Mbalia has super powerful titles and awesome covers! Long live Gum Baby! Rebecca Roanhorse's standalone Race to the Sun might be a good one to start with. It discusses some really topical issues and would be important for kids to read. We're obsessed with the title of Rise of the Chaos Goddess. Sarwat Chadda seems like a hilarious guy. Which one will Kristen read first!? The premise for Pahua and the Soul Stealer sounds so cool. Kristen has heard of the Hmong people before thanks to the Olympics! Foreshadowing: We mention our cat. Please make Karen's dreams come true. Let's talk about the RRP books that aren't out yet! In Serwa Boatang's Guide to Vampire Hunting, pronunciation of Serwa's name is literally a plot point. Not the fireflies! It's giving us very much Teen Wolf vibes. Very much Buffy. Daniel Jose Older sounds like he's lived such an interesting life. Finally a young adult novel!! *whispers diabolically* Enemies to lovers! We just want magic to be real. The Whimsies sounds so fun and mischievous. So many of these books are set in NYC. Don't forget the Moko Magic! Chapter Reviews This week we're discussing chapters 5 and 6 of The Lightning Thief. Karen was not expecting to have so many feelings about Mr. D. The nectar sounds amazing and terrible at the same time. Chapter 5 blows this whole world wide open. More Annabeth, please! Percy is so dramatic sometimes. Kristen is getting Big Brother vibes from chapter 6. Finally, Camp Half-Blood in the flesh. Who DOESN'T like to show off in the bathroom once in a while? Chiron is giving us Dumbledore vibes, and we don't love it. Did Chiron know Percy was Poseidon's son? We now know Grover's official age! Percy has so much left to learn. A surprise visitor drops by! Technically, Chiron didn't lie about the attic. Karen loves the explanation of monster archetypes. We got our first listener feedback! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 4, which will include a spoiler-free review of Daughter of the Deep in more detail. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz come together to update you on the latest Rick Riordan news (including some new Daughter of the Deep information), discuss the Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities anthology, talk about the Rick Riordan Presents imprint and all its authors, and analyze chapters three and four of The Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates There's SO MUCH news! The U.S. Daughter of the Deep release date has changed. This means Prophecy Radio episode 3 will cover Rick Riordan Presents instead of our DotD review! Please, no spoilers. Check out the new cover reveals for The Last Fallen Moon, Paola Santiago and the Sanctuary of Shadows, and the Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky graphic novel. City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda is getting a sequel! Tower of Nero is now in paperback! Daughter of the Deep and Cursed Carnival are number one on Amazon! Be sure to check out the profile on Thandiwe from Tristan Strong. Carlos Hernandez did an awesome interview with Nerd Daily. Ashlee Latimer has been doing Rick's social media for a whole year! Karen watched the Cursed Carnival live video and has some fun facts from the event! Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities Who wrote Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities? Some of these stories are a bit hefty! Read Karen's full Cursed Carnival review. Welcome to the Multiverse Mansion! Do the Rick Riordan Presents books exist in the Percy Jackson universe? Karen is still gunning for a crossover series from Rick. Kristen has no prior knowledge of any of the RRP stories. Mythology overload! What's up with this whole Gum Baby thing? Kristen had a little bit of an easier time with Rebecca Roanhorse's story. Sawat's story was full of sarcasm and dry wit. What's not to love? J.C. Cervantes' story really hits you with the mythology super fast! Now it's Karen's turn! She's read the books from the authors of the stories covered here. Read “Calamity Juice” first! Suffice it to say there are some Doctor Strange implications here. Not to play favorites, but Aru Shah is really awesome. Yoon Ha Lee's story was exciting because we're gonna get another book in this series. We find out why Kristen has trust issues. “The Initiation” has a lot of positive, subtle, natural representation. How could you not love Bruto!? Graci Kim, please give us enchanted baked goods. Last but not least, let's talk about Rick Riodan's new story. Will “My Life as a Child Outlaw” be related to anything else? Is this kid-friendly? Do we like the main character? There's a spinoff here that we'd love to read. Learning how to pronounce all the words was really fun! Chapter Reviews It's time to talk about The Lightning Thief chapters 3 and 4. We are now a Grover appreciation podcast. Favorite quotes and moments for chapter 3! Long live blue foods! Gabe is the worst. We're getting some Hagrid vibes here. Grover has no pants. Prophetic dreams are so fun to analyze. Prophecy Count: 1 On to chapter 4. How could you resist reading a book with chapter titles like this?? There's a reason why we made a Percy Jackson podcast. Kristen stole Karen's favorite moment, but it's okay, she found another one. We're SO CLOSE to Camp Half-Blood. Sally Jackson spinoff??? Percy must be just a little overwhelmed. Rick Riordan really is a phenomenal writer. We're having so much fun, and we hope you are, too! Please reach out to us if you have any questions or comments.
