Is Sarah trying to talk Susie into going back on the Challenge? What in the Freaky Friday is going on here? We discuss the man who had an unusual reaction to magic mushrooms that got him arrested for the attempted murder of 80 people. We also learn that an arrest was made in the freak death of a hockey player on the ice. One thing we're all against is forced entertainment, so no singing on planes, please. Sarah almost got into fisticuffs at a comedy show, and we are here for it. Susie has had it with the viral story of the Thanksgiving texters who defied racial stereotypes and formed an unlikely friendship. We hear why some older comedians are realizing that they owe their careers to their moms. Susie said the Robbie Williams documentary made her realize how unnatural fame is. We celebrate the unsung hero of Thanksgiving (mushroom soup) and Susie loses it over Sarah's "rich people" stuffing. Plus, we find out how ancient Egyptians were working smarter not harder when they made the Sphinxes.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Prophecy Radio episode #93 discusses City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda ahead of the sequel's release, Fury of the Dragon Goddess before catching you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including what sort of Percy Jackson and the Olympians content we got from San Diego Comic-Con 2023. This week, we're also talking about The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 17, in which the Kanes end up in Paris and run into an old friend. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:32) We're kicking off this week's news and updated by talking about SDCC. We had some boots on the ground at the convention and got a peek at what the campers were handing out. Next up, we talk in-depth about the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians character posters. Oh yeah, and there was even a flash mob! Don't forget that Fury of the Dragon Goddess comes out on August 1! Books of Wonder is hosting a virtual tour, and it's gonna be awesome. Read Riordan also posted an article about Lugal, the god of insanity. On June 27, Rick wrote a blog post talking about the Chalice of the Gods book tour. We go through all of the tour stops, plus the Boston Book Festival happening in October. Can Rick talk about the show on tour? We also think he'll be talking about his next project. Oh, and Karen will be at another stop! We also discuss whether we'll stop our The Red Pyramid discussion to talk about Chalice of the Gods. Don't forget to check out this Bookseller interview. City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda (00:23:38) Talking about this book has been a long time coming, and we're so glad to finally discuss it on the podcast! What's this book about? We talk about our overall feelings for the book and the writing. It's wild to think this was written before COVID. But don't worry, this book won't remind you too much of the pandemic. It's well worth reading the Foreword, if only to see what it was like to have Rick as a teacher. This book teaches us a lot about racism, being a hero, dealing with grief, and fighting for your home. It seems only right to kick off the character section by talking about Sikander Aziz. All work and no play makes Sik a tired boy. There's so much to love about Sik, but especially his compassion for other people. We draw some parallels between Sik and Samirah/Magnus Chase. Daoud seems only skin-deep at first glance, but we both loved him from the beginning. We also loved Belet, who has a killer roundhouse kick. She's so intense, but her and Sik balance each other out perfectly. SO. MANY. CATS. Kasusu is an amazing sword, and it reminds us a lot of another magical weapon from one of Rick's books. What's it like being both the goddess of love AND war? Ishtar is both amazing and terrifying. And then there's Nergal. Sure, he's the antagonist in this book, but he's also a necessary balance to the circle of life. The spoiler section starts at 01:04:05. If you're used to handling New Yorkers in the morning, you can definitely take on a pack of demons. SURPRISE, Sikander is immortal. We're a little smitten with Gilgamesh, not gonna lie. How do you accidentally end up in the afterlife? By taking the wrong train, of course. The scenes between Sik and Mo were incredible but also heartbreaking. THE BAGHDAD SAUCE. It wasn't easy to get the flower that grants immortality, but they did it. We learn something amazing about Mo and Daoud. Nergal is defeated in the most spectacular way. The end of the book gives us some interesting final moments between Sik and Daoud, his family, and even Belet. We're so happy City of the Plague God gets a sequel in Fury of the Dragon Goddess. It's fun to read the author's note, and Sarwat has some wonderful things to tell us about this book and about Rick Riordan. Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:35:18) This week, we're discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 17! Carter becomes a chicken again, and we talk about what this dream could mean. Carter gets in trouble with Zia, but it informs us a lot about her AND about him. Gods, her story is tragic, and now we're sad. Did someone steal Zia's memories? It's nice that Carter still remembers his mom. Are Carter and Zia going on a date!? Okay, it's time to leave and go to…Paris!? Thank the gods for Bast. Feedback (01:54:08) We got some wonderful mentions on Threads, and several people remind us how much they miss our old podcast, Book Hype. Did you know you can leave reviews for podcasts on Audible!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 94, in which we'll discuss Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda, before jumping into an interview with the man himself! Join me as I visit Luxor, Egypt. It is here that there is the largest temple complex in the world called Karnak. Karnak is dedicated to the Gods Amen and Mut and is known as the Temple of Purity. I explore two distinct areas of Karnak; The Sacred Lake and Ptah Chapel. Entering Ptah chapel are the seven heavenly gates that lead to a chamber where there is a very life-like statute of Sekhmet, the Lion-headed Warrior Goddess of healing. After exploring Karnak, I follow a 2 mile 'Avenue of Sphinxes' that leads from Karnak to Luxor. By the time we arrived at Luxor, it was nighttime. Seeing Luxor at night is really the best way to view it because the temple is set up with thousands of lights and since it is almost all open-air, seeing it in the dark is quite riveting. There is an Egyptian Ballroom that is designed after a temple for Ramses II at Karnak while the mezzanine Ladies Lounge features a replica of the throne chair of King Tut and makeup tables that feature tiny Sphinxes. The theater opened on December 25, 1929, just two months after the stock market crash. Originally build for the shriners, when the project went over budget, they leased the building to William Fox, a movie mogul who was building theaters around the country at the time. The theatre closed December, 1932, 125 weeks after it opened due to the Shriners defaulting on the mortgage and Fox going bankrupt. It was purchased by Paramount Pictures and Lucas & Jenkins, a Georgia company that owned a hundred theatres. In the 1940's the Fox because one of the most popular locations, with the Egyptian room drawing big bands and country and western swing bands of the era. It was notable for being the only club in Atlanta at the time that would allow both black and white patrons. Though still segregated, with a seperate entrance that still remains today at the back of the theatre for historical purposes. The Fox would fully integrate in 1962 In the 70's there was a decline in the theatre attendance, and was almost sold to AT&T with plans to tear it down and put a parking deck in its place, but was ultimately subverted by a group and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 1974. Celebrities that assisted saving the Fox include Liberace and Lynyrd Skynyrd (recording their first live album there and debuting guitarist Ed King's replacement, Steve Gaines, to the world). The U.S. Department of the Interior subsequently named the Fox a National Historic Landmark on May 26, 1976, citing its architectural uniqueness. Currently, the Fox is the only remaining movie palace in Atlanta, being run by the non-profit group, Atlanta Landmarks, Inc. An estimated 750,000 people visit the Fox every year. The venue was the site of Prince's final performance, held one week before his death on April 21, 2016. Notable acts who have played the Fox are Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Pearl Jam, the Allman Brothers, Ray Charles, James Brown, B-52s, A fun bit of trivia... When the shriners built the theatre, they built a 3,640 sq/ft office space in the theatre that was converted into an apartment that Joe Patten, the technical director from 1974 to 2004, occupied with a rent free lease for life. Patten died in 2016. Since then, the space has been unoccupied, but there is a passageway leads from the bedroom to a former spotlight platform at the top of the auditorium. Thoughts and impressions of the Fox theatre? Would you visit again? Special thanks to Megan George and Aly Grubb for the media tickets they gave us, they were fantastic seats.  Letterkenny Live Produced by New Metric media Staring:Jared KeesoNathan DalesK. Trevor WilsonMichelle MylettMark ForwardTyler JohnstonDylan PlayfairAndrew HerrEvan Stern Letterkenny live was started back in 2018, with only Jared Keeso, Nathan Dales, K. Trevor Wilson, and Mark Forward. Michelle Mylett joined in 2019, and Johnston, Playfair, Herr and Stern joining 2020. Though, the 2020 tour was, of course, postponed indefinitely in March. The dates were not announced to be rescheduled on July 19, 2021. Based on the show of the same name, the stage performance consists of some old, reworked, and new sketches with the cast. Including a set of stand up by Mark Forward and K. Trevor Wilson... and as themselves, not in costume. Which is funny because they reference the actors may resemble the characters. Letterkenny, the tv show, debuted on Crave tv in canada in Feburary 2015, which was based on the YouTube channel Keeso developed called Letterkenny Problems. It arrived in the US in July 2018 on Hulu who now owns exclusive distribution rights in the US. Its been nominated and won numerous Canadian screen awards, including best comedy series, best directing for Jacob Tierney (who directs all the episodes of Letterkenny), Best Lead Actor for Jared Keeso, even technical awards like best editing and best photography for the Sleepover episode. Back to Letterkenny live, Mark Forward, as Coach, welcomed everyone to the show and then informed us that due to an injury, Taylor Johnston who plays Stewart will not be performing that night... Which prompts some boos, and I yelled that it's fucking embarrassing... Which Coach agreed with. Roald then comes on stage and addresses the crowd, being weird and funny, then the hicks start coming on stage. Staring with Squirrely Dan, followed by Katy, then Dary, finally Wayne enters to thunderous applause. They do some back and forth, and crowd interaction with How're ya now? The crowd yells back, Good'n you?! It was fun. They exit the stage and Reily and Jonesy come on and do a bit talking about hockey, referencing the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team, when we hear Shoresy start chirping them from the toilet as he did in the show... But Shorseys chips also work in local attractions and themes, like coke and hot chicken. This goes for a bit, as usual, but its very engaging and works well. I feel there were more sketches, just a little cross over stuff. Roald then introduces Mark Forward to do a small set of stand up. His humor is very misdirectional, like when he walks on stage, he says things like, "yes, thank you, I'm very good." His set was funny, but I honestly don't remember much from it, but he ended it was a joke/song that he admitted before he started that it was "stupid" Xavier McCutchins, who named bears until the end. After Mark finished, another hick skit ened with Coach telling the hicks people want to see the classics. They started updating the crowd on what everyone else in Letterkenny is upto, also giving the crowd a sneak peek to season 11, and showing a cold open to an episode. They moved to an intermission, during which we were able to move everyone from our original seats to about 7 rows back, right in the center. It was awesome. Going into the second half, they continue giving humorous updates to other characters in letterkenny, as well as showing a preview for Shoresy, and a blooper reel for S10. Followed by K. Trevor Wilson coming on and doing a stand up set. His standup is totally different from Mark Forward, and Squirrely Dans character. His long form, informal storytelling type of jokes were a change of pace. We got another skit of Reilly and Jonesy being chirped by Shoresy, again throwing in references to Atlanta like the Varsity and chili hotdogs. And coach drunkenly talking about barb. The final skit brought back one of the best bits from the show, when the whole cast comes on stage making porn sounds, yes yes yes yes yesing and "aw fuck, aw fuck." The lights go out, the cast had a group hug, as they did their curtain call, they introduced themselves and each said something they loved about Atlanta. Two final bows, and they exit stage right. Lights up, and the show is over. Thoughts on the show? Pate has been up to no good to obtain a single Golden Dragon so that he can make Rosey "his" (blech, I just threw up a little in my mouth), committing a crime that has his future looking pretty murky. She then fired additional rounds while standing in the hallway.” The Outlook reported last month about Jones affiliation with Bigfoot Research as the southeast regional coordinator. In a video of Jones recorded by The Outlook, Jones said she was helping conduct a search for Sasquatch in a portion of the Talladega National Forest. She stated she was in the military and law enforcement for 15 years. Jones also told The Outlook she had discovered adult male and female Sasquatch in the area along with juveniles and that she left food weekly for the creatures. Jones was searching for others across the Southeast who have credible sightings of Sasquatch. Jones has been charged with attempted murder, a Class A felony; attempted first-degree domestic violence, a Class B felony and first-degree criminal trespassing, a Class A misdemeanor. According to the Shelby County Jail website Jones has a $81,000 bond available to her. The tragic real-life story of the Poltergeist cast Link: https://www.looper.com/224331/the-tragic-real-life-story-of-the-poltergeist-cast/?utm_campaign=clip Dominique Dunne - Dana Freeling Perhaps one of the most grisly and tragic deaths was that of 22-year-old actress Dominique Dunne, who played the eldest sister in the first film, Dana Freeling. Her character was mentioned in Poltergeist II as being off to college, but the reality was, any ideas screenwriters might have had for her character in the sequel had to be scrapped entirely due to Dunne's untimely death just months after the original movie was released. On the evening of October 30, 1982, Dunne was brutally strangled by an aggravated ex-boyfriend. The assailant, identified as sous chef John Sweeney, showed up at her West Hollywood home in hopes of repairing their relationship and moving back in with her. An argument erupted on Dunne's driveway, where the deadly attack took place. When police arrived at the scene, Sweeney was quoted as saying "I've killed my girlfriend!" At the time, Dunne was still alive; she was rushed to Cedar's-Sinai Medical Center, where she remained in a coma for five days and never regained consciousness. On November 4, 1982, just three weeks before what would have been her 23rd birthday, she was removed from life support and pronounced dead. Julian Beck - Kane, the malevolent preacher in the 1986 movie Poltergeist II Unlike Dominique Dunne's shocking murder, Beck passed away after a long battle with stomach cancer, something he had been diagnosed with in 1983. So while his death is certainly unfortunate, it also definitely wasn't out of left field. Beck was dying of stomach cancer during the production and the entire crew was well aware of his diagnosis. Some believe it even influenced his chilling final performance in a film. Heather O'Rourke - Carol Ann The most well-known death that sparked and fuels the "Poltergeist curse" fire to this day was the shocking loss of Heather O' Rourke, who played Carol Ann — the young, angelic face of the entire franchise. During production of Poltergeist III in 1987, O'Rourke was undergoing treatment for Crohn's disease, which would turn out to be a misdiagnosis. Fast forward to January of 1988, when O'Rourke became severely ill and her health started deteriorating at an alarming rate. On February 1, 1988, she was rushed to the hospital, where she ultimately died due to septic shock caused by undetected intestinal blockage. This blockage ruptured and the toxins released in her body proved to be too much. During an operation the 12-year-old O'Rourke was undergoing the same day of her death, it was also revealed that she did not have Crohn's disease, but an acute bowel obstruction due to a congenital stenosis — something that could've been surgically corrected had it been detected sooner. Released in June 1988, the film marked O'Rourke's final feature, as she died four months before its release at the age of 12. Her death resulted in marketing complications for the film's studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who did not want to exploit the tragedy. If there is a Poltergeist curse, what caused it? One widely-discussed theory is the fact that real skeletons were used by the effects crew in the first two movies, most notably in the muddy swimming pool scene from the original with Diane Freeling, played by JoBeth Williams. Desecration of human remains plays a big role in the first film as the probable cause of the Freelings' pesky poltergeist problem. The dentist was said to have been murdered under mysterious circumstances around 1933. His body, shot multiple times, was found near the Sphinxes that guard the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Pasadena, according to news reports published at that time. His death remains to be a mystery even today. National Ghost Hunting Day: https://www.pasadenanow.com/weekendr/explore-the-spooky-spots-in-pasadena-on-national-ghost-hunting-day/ For centuries, seeking out mysteries, exploring the unknown, and satisfying mystical curiosities have been part of our human code. This sentiment has led to a growing American phenomenon … Ghost Hunting. Also known as paranormal investigating, ghost hunting embraces history while breaking open the supernatural and seeking to solve the mystery of the unknown. Established in July 2016, National Ghost Hunting Day™ recognizes and celebrates the novice, curious and expert execution of ghost hunting methods. As an official listing on the National Day Calendar, it is held on the last Saturday of each September. This date was chosen by design, commencing the start of each new Halloween season. Its noble intention is to globally promote the most haunted properties in the world while recognizing the work of paranormal investigators dedicated to these iconic locations!
