Escuchar audio
In 1908, a girl was brutally murdered in a small town in upstate New York. The town was seemingly idyllic, but beneath the surface, it was crawling with prostitution, orgies, deceit, and corruption. It was fueled by a political machine so powerful it could cover up not just one but multiple murders. The truth behind the murder of Hazel Drew was meant to remain unsolvable. Just like the television show it inspired over 80 years later. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including graphic depictions of violence. Welcome to B The Way Forward Interludes - a series of conversations that don't necessarily fit in our regular season, but are just too good to not share. This week, a very special episode for Women's History Month. Telle Whitney was already a trailblazing woman in the field of semiconductors when she moved to Silicon Valley in the 1980s. Anita Borg had already made a name for herself in systems. The two met at a party and became fast friends. Among all the things they bonded over was, of course, their shared experiences as women in tech. And the ways they both tried to deal with the glaring disparity between men and women in the industry. But Anita and Telle weren't content to just commiserate. They were determined to do something about it. Out of that determination and that friendship, the Grace Hopper Celebration and the Institute for Women and Technology - which became AnitaB.org - were born. Anita Borg and Tell Whitney saw a need and decided to do something about it - and the tech space would never be the same. Telle - Co-Founder of AnitaB.org and Brenda's predecessor as President and CEO - pulls back the curtain on the early days of AnitaB.org, the secret origin of Anita's pioneering networking group Systers, and what it was like at the very first GHC in 1994. Plus, Telle helps us get to know who Anita Borg was in the ways only a close friend can. For from of Telle and her work check her out... On LinkedIn - /telle-whitney On X - @TelleWhitney --- At our heart, AnitaB.org is a connector: we connect women in tech to the organizations, opportunities, and tools they need to advance, thrive, and transform the future of technology. We convene transformative events, lead essential discussions, produce groundbreaking research and white papers, and support the tech ecosystem to shape the future for women in tech. --- Connect with AnitaB.org Instagram - @anitab_org Facebook - /anitab.0rg LinkedIn - /anitab-org On the web - anitab.org --- Our guests contribute to this podcast in their personal capacity. Episode 126. Joining us from England is former soldier, writer, director and producer, Tom Petch. Last time Tom came on to talk about this subject we went off-topic so many times we never really talked about the SAS. This time we stay on target. Did you know both the Germans and British were taking large amounts of amphetamines in WW2? He got into the movie business after serving in the British Army, spending time in the Special Forces. Tom has written a book called 'Speed. Aggression. Surprise: The Untold Secret Origins of the SAS'. He went deep into the archives to research the real story how the SAS was formed. Hello Leaguers! We have begun our journey with Justice League the animated series and we are so excited. It is a great time for Flash and xforce11 to rewatch it and it is Harely's first watch. Secret Origins does not give us secret origins of our heroes, at least not all of them. We have heroes all over the globe, but they very much stay in their own lanes. The alien invasion has caused trouble. But J'onn J'onzz the Martin Manhunter reaches out and with Superman's help draws the heroes together. The aliens are shapeshifters and are crippling earth's defenses and early warning devices. They are formable foes. Our team comes together and then pair off to try to take down the alien's ships. It looks like Batman is dead. Superman and Hawkgirl are captured. Then the rest of the team is captured. The big boss comes down to finish them off, but Batman suddenly reappears to save the day with the help of J'onn who has cloaked him. In the end, Batman through, Wayne Enterprises, creates The Watchtower out in space. A place for them to come together and to watch out for threats from space and on the earth. And a League of Heroes is formed... This week, we continue our unit on The Silmarillion and discuss the Ainulindalë, aesthetics and philosophy, the subcreative process and the Secret Origins of Melkor.
This episode was inspired by a bottle by Victor Ramos, sourced from his tasting room in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca, labeled “Mensoncle de Arroqueno.” It's the first time I've seen that spelling, but it refers to the heart of the agave — like mezontle. mesonte, and Mezonte. (Hi, Pedro!)
Show notes by Joe Peluso Keith and Joe are back with special guest Dylan for the second part of his "Secret Origin". And this time around they are treated to a master class on Manga! Once again Dylan informs and entertains, with youthful enthusiasm and insight, as he educates and elucidates the merits of the medium's differences and similarities with "western" comics. From the not for the faint-of-heart "Berserk" to the moreapproachable "Naruto", your two hosts get a "Shonen Jump" sized tour of the world of Manga. Keith and Joe ask questions about themes, packaging, influences, availability and vision concerning this form of graphic storytelling that is growing exponentially here in the US. And like hall-of-famer Derek Jeter, Dylan fields their questions with skill and grace. And stick around for the end as the two" old guy"s (You need to know dendrochronology to guess Joe's age.) make some non-Manga recommendations to Dylan. It's a fun-filled hour of Eastern and Western comics talk that we think you will thoroughly enjoy!

ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. This episode includes Adventures of Superman #426, Alpha Flight #45, Amazing Spider-Man #286-287, Betty's Diary #6, Captain America #327-328, Classic X-Men #7, Cracked Magazine #226, D.P. 7 #5, Daredevil #241, The Demon #3, Fallen Angels #1, G.I. Or to put it another way:"Second star to the right and straight on till morning".

Why is my chair so squeaky? Is Derek burping? The only person who might know is The Watcher, who is introduced in this issue of Fantastic Four. A truly jam-packed bit of storytelling, this issue has dead cities on the Moon, a commie villain, a trio of super-apes, the winning of the space race and more. It's the kind of comic book fun that could only happen in the 60s. In the intro we chat a bit about robot vacuums and a mysterious picture of a pixelated man at the Fantastic Four wrap party. Plus: James Gunn answers a question about the Superman trailer. And I introduce Derek to the world of the Costco Guys. If you don't care about that, skip to 32:49. Next week: we start watching Creature Commandos, the first glimpse at the new DCU! Join us, won't you?

In 1974, a pioneer of the SAS and master of military deception, Dudley Clarke, passed away. His death went almost entirely unnoticed by the British public, despite the fact that he carried out some of the most dramatic deception campaigns of World War Two. He waged a covert war of trickery and misdirection across Europe, which ended up getting him arrested by Spanish authorities while dressed as a woman. He also helped to found one of the world's preeminent special forces; the Special Air Service, or the SAS. His contribution is often overlooked, but without it, the SAS may well have never existed. So who was Dudley Clarke? What were some of the most audacious acts of subterfuge he carried out? And why is he not better known? Dan is joined by former SAS Troop Commander and author of Speed, Aggression, Surprise: The Secret Origins of the SAS, Tom Petch, to answer these questions and more.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore.Enjoy unlimited access to award-winning original documentaries that are released weekly and AD-FREE podcasts. Dimitri and Khalid record what is probably the last SJ episode before their assassinations by apoplectic Simpsons reply guys lashing out in the throes of total ego death. Topics include: the dominance of “Gen X irony” in 1990s pop culture, the rise of contextual/information-based toy culture, Pynchon's cameos, reflections on Bartmania, the modern tendency to view the Simpsons as both profound and deeply left-wing, “the purpose of a Simpsons is what it does”, the Trump trial self-immolator's anti-Simpsons manifesto, DSA Lisa teaching us to perpetuate official LIES… The Simpsons as reflection “of the cynicism at the heart of the neoliberal economy”, FOX's deliberate “selling” of Gen X, Douglas Coupland's generation-defining book, the inversion of words like “stupid” and “bad”, the centrality of the hot couch and “ironic consumption”, “the Simpsons is to Fox what Bart Simpson is to Principal Skinner”, similarities with the fourth wall-breaking WWF Attitude Era, the 1993 paper “Homer Simpson's Eyes and the Culture of Late Nostalgia”, Time vs. “Megatrends”, Bill Cosby's “ontological run-in with Bart” and his defeat by the “superior intelligence of the ‘toon”… The secret etymology of the “Bad Boy” and precursors to the Bart Simpson archetype in Gilded Age America - specifically the creepy neotenous “Yellow Kid” comic strip, as well as the wildly successful “Peck's Bad Boy” series by Wisconsin Governor George Wilbur Peck… Bart failing to embody the Nietzschean übermensch while inoculating you to the nihilism of the neoliberal 90s, The Simpsons as information conversion spectacle, Matt Groening's revolting foot massage on the Lolita Express, the inexplicable number of Harvard mathematics Ph.Ds on the Simpsons writing staff, and why all “floating timeline” adult-oriented ‘toons are structurally conservative and inexorably sus.
