Today I welcome back to the program Al Fadi and Amy McClintock, with the Strategic Resource Group, an organization that funds projects to reach unreached people groups in the Middle East and North Africa, the so-called MENA region of the world. Both Amy and Al have been on the program before to discuss a bible translation project for Hejazi speaking people. This is an Arabic language spoken by more than 11 million people. More than three years ago, I started reporting on a new initiative by the Strategic Resource Group that – if successful – could have a dramatic impact on the way we do Bible translation. They are using a so-called Translation Service Provider – an organization that normally translates contracts, treaties, movie scripts, books, and all manner of other material – to translate the Bible. I wrote my first article about this process in August of 2021. But one aspect of this project that is different from those undertaken by traditional Bible translation organizations is the remarkable degree of transparency SRG has shown to me in the process. Since this project began, I have been checking in with them every six months to get updates, and to hear lessons learned. And that's what we are doing today. The very fact that Al and Amy and SRG are allowing me to have these regular check-ins is dramatically different from the way the Bible translation industry normally operates. It's an industry cloaked in secrecy and layers of bureaucracy. In fact, for the past four years or so, I've written about 50 articles on the industry and its practices, and I'll have links to some of those articles in today's show notes. I encourage you to check them out: https://ministrywatch.com/bible-translations/

Stop & Shop said it will close 32 underperforming grocery stores in the Northeast U.S. by the end of the year. The chain, which is owned by the Dutch supermarket company Ahold Delhaize, said it will close 10 stores in New Jersey, eight stores in Massachusetts, seven stores in New York, five stores in Connecticut and two stores in Rhode Island. The company said employees at affected stores would be offered other jobs within the company. Asked by The Associated Press how many people are employed at the 32 stores, Stop & Shop wouldn't say. Stop & Shop, which got its start in 1914 in Somerville, Massachusetts, operates around 400 grocery stores and has 60,000 employees. In an interview with The Associated Press, Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said the closures are a difficult but necessary step to stabilize the business. “These stores are not making a profit,” he said. “They take away from the whole organization. We need to focus on the parts that we need to invest in and want to invest in.” Reid said Stop & Shop will continue to build new stores and remodel existing ones. The brand, which has remodeled 190 stores since 2018, will also invest in lower prices and promotions at its remaining stores, he said. Stop & Shop will continue to have buying power even with fewer stores because of its parent company, according to Reid. Ahold Delhaize operates more than 7,700 grocery stores worldwide, including the Food Lion and Giant brands in the U.S. Burt Flickinger, a longtime retail consultant and owner of Strategic Resource Group, said many of Stop & Shop's problems were self-inflicted. The brand closed fresh meat and seafood counters in some stores, for example, which cut down on the amount customers spent in those stores. Stop & Shop is also getting squeezed by big rivals like Walmart and Costco, and discount chains like Aldi and Lidl. “Wherever a Target, a Walmart, a Costco or a BJ's has been built, a Stop & Shop is in jeopardy,” Flickinger said. “While they have a plan going forward, I'm not sure the plan's going to be fully competitive given the intensifying level of competition.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.
Grocery stores are a big part of our lives, and many of us feel a real bond and a sense of loyalty to the stores where we buy our food. The merger of Mariano's parent company, Kroger, and Jewel Osco's parent company, Albertsons, has raised many concerns and questions. Paul Schultheis, the Founder and a Managing Partner at Strategic Resource Group for 28 years, shares three great tests for all leaders: they must cast vision, they must seek partnerships, and they must have followers. Volunteers are a key to the most successful Apartment Life programs. Matt from Kent, WA shares the fundamentals of the “why”, “when”, and “who” of utilizing the power of volunteers for events. No matter the size of the community you do not need to serve alone. Coordinators can multiply their effectiveness by inviting others to join them.

Tune in to hear Head of School, Dr. Mark Carleton, chat with First Presbyterian Church Senior Pastor, Rev. Jim Birchfield, in a new episode which is now live and available for download on our People of PS Podcast. A graduate of Michigan State University, Dr. Jim Birchfield was a senior executive with a magazine publishing company when he became a Christian and sensed a calling to go full-time into Christian ministry. Accordingly, Jim resigned from his lucrative career in advertising and marketing and entered Fuller Seminary where he earned his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry. In his early years of Christian service, Jim worked as a director of high school ministry, director of missions, and director of single adult ministry, before moving into the role of associate pastor for young adults, singles, missions, and discipleship, and finally executive pastor. Jim served in two churches in California before moving to Houston to lead First Presbyterian Church in 2009. Jim is a voracious reader, who tries to stay current on Christian theology and its practical applications to his ministry. He is active in encouraging local and global ministries in addition to serving on the board of The Nehemiah Center, Main Street Ministries and Strategic Resource Group.
As part of my growth as a Bible translation worker, I want to listen to a wide variety of people and different strategies, and not just to those who are within the echo chamber of people who think like me and agree with me. This interview with Jane Schoen of SRG raises some big questions that have been debated for years about whether BT should be done by believers or unbelievers. The method she'll describe for us is still essentially in a proof of concept phase, and it will be interesting to see how everything plays out ten to twenty years down the road. There's no doubt it's a bit controversial, but it's worth listening to and considering. Jane has a broad range of experience, and currently serves as the director of the unreached people groups fund for an organization called SRG, the Strategic Resource Group, which funds projects to reach unreached people groups in the Middle East and North Africa. workingfortheword.com | my books | twitter | music | Hebrew | academic articles | facebook | contact | download all episodes for offline

Today I have on the program Jane Schoen. Jane is the director of Strategic Initiatives for the Strategic Resource Group, an organization that funds projects to reach unreached people groups in the Middle East and North Africa, the so-called MENA region of the world. Strategic Resource Group is doing something that – if successful – could have a dramatic impact on the way we do Bible translation. They are using a so-called Translation Service Provider – an organization that normally translates contracts, treaties, movie scripts, books, and all manner of other material – to translate the Bible. The company it is using is called Lingua Linx. I wrote an article about this process back in August of last year, and today I check in with Jane, who is leading this project, to see how things are going. You can read more about this initiative, and all of our coverage of the Bible Translation Industry, by going to MinistryWatch.com and typing “Bible Translation” into the search engine. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Ben Warwick . We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, and Casey Sudduth. I'm Warren Smith, and – until next time – May God bless you.

Black Friday has been important for the retail industry for generations. Crouch II discusses how his organization provides resources and boosts the morale of American armed forces members.
