The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. Helping you plan and implement strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. On this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, we sit down with Ajay James, a Retired Navy SEAL Senior Chief, and a man who has lived multiple lives across different professions. His journey is one of relentless pursuit—of challenge, of purpose, and of transformation. From his roots in Trinidad to navigating life in the U.S., joining the military, and eventually becoming a special operations warrior, Ajay's story is packed with insights for military veterans, first responders, and anyone facing a major career change.Ajay didn't start out with a clear path toward the military. Growing up in a strict household with a father who was a police officer and engineer, discipline was ingrained in him early. However, academics never felt like the right fit, and his journey was anything but conventional. Before enlisting, he worked in fields like executive protection, trained as a Muay Thai fighter, and even modeled professionally. But deep inside, he knew he wanted something greater—a challenge that pushed him beyond his limits. That challenge came in the form of the Navy SEAL Teams. Despite enlisting at 33 years old, well past the typical age for special operations candidates, Ajay committed himself to the brutal training required to become an elite warrior. Through BUD/S, he was assigned to SEAL Team 5, serving in deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. He eventually achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. But after years of military transition, deployments, and combat, Ajay faced his toughest mission yet: life after service. Leaving the SEAL Teams wasn't just a career shift—it was an identity shift. Like many military veterans, he had to navigate the complexities of finding new purpose, building a civilian career, and adjusting to a world without the structured intensity of special operations.Today, Ajay has embraced veteran transition, helping others through mentorship, fitness, and leadership development. Whether working with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, or transitioning service members, he's proving that the mission doesn't end when the uniform comes off. His story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of transformation.CONNECT WITH THE PODCAST:IG: WEBSITE: LinkedIn:SIGN-UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER:QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:SPONSORS:Trident CoffeeGet 15% off your purchaseLink: https://tridentcoffee.comPromo Code: TDP15Human Performance TRTGet 10% off your purchaseWeb: https://hptrt.com/Promo Code: TDP

A Martial Arts Odyssey from Bruce Lee to Wing Chun Mastery In this captivating episode, Peter Mogridge talks to Andrew Staton at the Doncaster UK Martial Arts Show. Peter, a seasoned martial artist with decades of experience, shares his incredible journey from being inspired by Bruce Lee to becoming a Wing Chun master under Grandmaster Samuel Kwok. Peter's martial arts adventure began in the 1970s, driven by the Bruce Lee craze that swept the world. Despite starting with Shotokan Karate, he eventually found his true calling in Wing Chun. His path was far from straightforward, involving stints in Aikido, Thai Boxing, and Wadoryu Karate, among others. Peter's dedication and passion for martial arts led him to train with notable figures like Sean Vieira and Nathan Lewis, becoming part of the renowned Bristol Death Squad. One of the highlights of Peter's journey is his close relationship with Grandmaster Samuel Kwok. After facing challenges with a previous Wing Chun club, Peter found a mentor and friend in Samuel Kwok, achieving Sifu status and travelling the world to teach and promote Wing Chun. Peter's insights into the philosophy and practical applications of Wing Chun are profound, emphasising its potential for self-improvement, peace, and flexibility. Peter also discusses his involvement in combat survival training, highlighting the importance of situational awareness and risk assessment in today's world. He shares valuable advice on avoiding conflict and the realities of knife defence, stressing the importance of running away rather than engaging. Beyond martial arts, Peter is active in close protection work and is setting up a new school overseas to train high-risk environment close protection operators. He is also working on a charity initiative to support military veterans. An inspiring and insightful conversation with Peter Mogridge, a martial artist who embodies dedication, resilience, and the spirit of continuous learning. On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Anthea McCourtie about her career from full-time employment to finding her passion, to having a side hustle which eventually became her full time job as a nutritional therapist.KEY TAKEAWAYSAs a teenager I was into the dieting approach, I was very obsessed with calories and all the unhealthy attitudes that a lot of us had in the 90s. I became really interested in what food could do for us, so I did a BSc in nutritional therapy part time while I was working and finally qualified at the end of 2012. I was also doing martial arts about 14 hours a week until I had to have shoulder surgery which meant I had some free time, so I got a personal training qualification which bolted on to nutritional therapy.People are never just looking for help with their nutrition, there's factors of weight loss or fitness. Now I work with my one-to-one clients at their homes (for the initial consultation at least) so I can get a feel for how they're living and their lifestyle. If they do the transformation programmes with me, they'll be doing nutritional therapy as well as personal training and/or yoga. We work on lifestyle changes as well, it's more all-encompassing than when I first started.Becoming more of a personal brand, with You By Anthea, to incorporate the different things that I do gave me a lot more freedom because, at the end of the day, you're buying from the person. When I work with people one-to-one, they are buying into me. That allows me to put a lot more of myself into what I do than in my early days on Instagram, it was soulless and very factual. Now I post pictures of myself climbing and doing pole fitness, I don't teach those things but I feel like I can show it because I want to share what I'm about.Calorie counting is a massively flawed system, I don't use it. Calories are not the same across all foods. Half the time they're not measured correctly, especially when you've got food that's more than one ingredient, it's not possible. Calorie output is such a difficult thing to measure – even the machines at the gym or smart watches, it's wild guess work. But also, food is information: 100 Calories of almonds is going to have a completely different impact on my body than 100 calories of gummy bears! So much of it depends on our hormones, our sex hormone balance, sleep levels, cortisol levels, blood sugar levels and insulin response. The gut and the microbiome have a massive impact on how much energy is extracted from food. BEST MOMENTS‘I like to really immerse myself in things, I'm a bit of an all-or-nothing person.'‘I work a lot locally, but since the pandemic we've all figured out we can do more online than we realised before.'‘Having my name in the brand has given me a lot more scope to show myself.'‘My mission is all about empowering mainly women, though I do work with some men as well, to feel amazing about themselves, not just discovering their health, there's a massive mindset thing in there as well that will directly impact their health and their food choices.'ABOUT THE GUESTAnthea McCourtie: I am a registered Nutritional Therapist with a BSc in Nutritional Therapy from the Centre for Nutrition Education and Lifestyle Management (in partnership with Middlesex University).I am a Level 3 qualified Personal Trainer specialising in at-home and outdoor training using a range of equipment including kettlebells, suspension (TRX) equipment as well as Thai Boxing fitness.  I also have a Level 3 award in designing Pre and Post Natal Exercise Programmes and am a Master Kettlebell Instructor. I am a qualified yoga teacher, registered with Yoga Alliance Professionals and offer vinyasa, yin and ashtanga yoga classes as well as individual and partner yoga instruction.I am a full member of BANT (British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine), the CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council) and Personal Trainer.Website: https://youbyanthea.co.uk/ Instagram: @you.by.antheaPODCAST DESCRIPTIONThe Build Better Brands podcast is to inspire small business owners and help them realise that they don't have to be Nike to have a great brand, and the sooner they start to focus on making it better, the sooner they can improve their lives and the lives of others. On the show I'll be talking to business owners that have built brands from the ground up. From mild-mannered High School math teacher to UFC Hall of Famer. That's this week's Team Never Quit special guest, Rich Franklin. Rich and Marcus kick it around in an entertaining discussion about the transition from teaching high school math to UFC fighting on a world-class level. His childhood days of taking Karate lessons brought about an interest in Thai Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu, which further developed into a full-time MMA fighting career. Rich has also coached in The Ultimate Fighter, launched a clothing brand, a juice café, and is a prime example of one classy dude. Nice guys can finish first. In this episode you will hear: I didn't grow up being an amazing athlete. I'm not super explosive, but I can grind. Mathematics, like being a sniper, is a skill. You have to work at it. If you take the grind away from me, then what am I? This grind, this work ethic I have, is not just the way I work out; it's the way I approach everything in life. When you start worrying about things outside of your circle of control, it'll take you away from your goals. When you're fighting somebody on the street that's not trained, I feel like Neo in the Matrix. When they throw a punch, it's so slow to me. Q: What's your favorite cheat meal?  A: What's a cheat meal? I don't deal well with disrespect, inefficiency, or stupidity. I like being challenged. I've never used drugs in my life. I've never even had a sip of alcohol. Had my college professor not actually cared, I could've folded. He saved me. You never know when a small gesture helps somebody. I don't think I would be in this place in my life without God. He's really directed my path. When is the right time to turn your passion into a profession? In episode 8 of the B-side with James Barrow, in the house sessions, I speak to World Champion Muay Thai fighter, and award-winning graphic designer, Ognjen Topic from his home in Brooklyn New York.Ognjen graduated from William Paterson University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He worked as a graphic designer from 2005 while fighting part-time, before quitting in 2013 to pursue his first passion, the brutally effective martial art of Muay Thai – and build a career as a full-time professional fighter.Known throughout the world as one of the best Muay Thai practitioners ever to come out of the United States, he holds several world titles and is one of a very small, elite group of foreign fighters to compete at the sport's highest levels. We discuss his fight career, his approach to both fighting and design, and the similarities between them, along with how he's maintaining his training regime in lockdown.Ognjen is incredibly dedicated, disciplined, and attacks everything he does with 100% commitment; and doesn't let life's setbacks phase him too much either.I really enjoyed our chat. He's a fantastic fighter, an excellent designer, and a really nice guy too.To follow Ognjen's fight career visit topicfight.com and check out his awesome creative work at topiccreative.com© Copyright The B-side with James Barrow 2020. One of the oft-repeated maxims in the martial arts is "emptying the cup" - if a new student can't put aside their pre-existing concepts, there will be no room for something new to think about. This idea provides the entry-point for our conversation this week, with some gems from our guest - Master Thai Boxing Instructor Jamie Crowder -  about the right way to learn martial arts as a beginner.  (And he has the experience to know: Master Crowder has been a martial arts practitioner for nearly 30 years, has taught students all around the world and is largely considered one of the finest Thai Boxing instructors in New York.)  Learn more about us at the Martial Arts Mind blog and Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
