This week Sam Goldman (@SamBGoldman) and Coco Das (@Coco_Das) have a wide ranging conversation with Dr. Clarence Lusane and Sunsara Taylor over what it will take to stop fascism in the United States. We discuss the 2024 elections in the context of the prospect of civil war, the genocide in Gaza and the uprising to stop it, the threat of today's wars spiraling out of control, the nature of the fascist threat, and the possibility of wrenching a better future out of this moment. Dr. Clarence Lusane is a political science professor and interim political science department chair at Howard University, and independent expert to the European Commission Against Racism and Intolerance. Started in 1887 by three well-known convicts, The Prison Mirror is often considered the best prison newspaper in the United States. But it is just one of many. In the 1980s, Robert Taliaferro was a writer and editor for The Mirror, as it was called in those days. Shannon Ross is a writer who started The Community in 2014 when he was in prison. The newsletter, which he still edits today, reaches half of Wisconsin's prison population. With hosts Adam Carr and Dasha Kelly Hamilton, Robert and Shannon come together to talk shop. We hear from them about why their work centers human-interest stories from people who are incarcerated and what we can learn from those who have an inside perspective. Find episode extras, resources, and more information about prison newspapers and our guests on our website.Voices in this episode:Shannon Ross is the founder and Executive Director of The Community and the Correcting the Narrative Campaign, which uses story-telling to promote acceptance of people with criminal records. Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite holodeck adventures in the Star Trek universe! Nathan and Eppy join the crew of Deep Space 9 for some thrilling spy action in S4E9 Our Man Bashir. Doctor Bashir is enjoying his new holo-adventure as a Bond-esque superspy when Garak crashes the party. Unfortunately, a transporter accident puts the patterns of the bridge crew into the story, and suddenly Bashir and Garak have to contend with the possibility of their actions having real-life consequences. An homage to James Bond, of course, this episode features a refreshing twist on the "stuck on the holodeck" trope while also grounding the romp with nods to long-running DS9 storylines. Happy April, everyone! This is our sixth look at a Star Trek holodeck episode that follows on the themes of our first love, The Rockford FIles. Hope you enjoy it! This week, political scientist Dr. Clarence Lusane discusses his book Twenty Dollars and Change: Harriet Tubman and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice and Democracy. He is interviewed by journalist Arionne Nettles. The following conversation originally took place February 23, 2023 and was recorded live via Zoom. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME More about Twenty Dollars and Change: Twenty Dollars and Change places Harriet Tubman's life and legacy in a long tradition of resistance, illuminating the ongoing struggle to realize a democracy in which her emancipatory vision prevails. America is in the throes of a historic reckoning with racism, with the battle for control over official narratives at ground zero. Across the country, politicians, city councils, and school boards are engaged in a highly polarized debate about whose accomplishments should be recognized, and whose point of view should be included in the telling of America's history. In Twenty Dollars and Change, political scientist Clarence Lusane, author of the acclaimed The Black History of the White House, writes from a basic premise: Racist historical narratives and pervasive social inequities are inextricably linked--changing one can transform the other. Taking up the debate over the future of the twenty-dollar bill, Lusane uses the question of Harriet Tubman vs. Andrew Jackson as a lens through which to view the current state of our nation's ongoing reckoning with the legacies of slavery and foundational white supremacy. He places the struggle to confront unjust social conditions in direct connection with the push to transform our public symbols, making it plain that any choice of whose life deserves to be remembered and honored is a direct reflection of whose basic rights are deemed worthy of protection, and whose are not.

Damn! Late with an episode AGAIN! Hi, friend. Yes, It's me, Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly-co-host for Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. And double damn if I'm not dropping this Episode 324 a day late and a dollar short. To be honest, me and your co-host Tyson Saner are WAY more than a dollar short. Just a reminder that we're basically producing this show for the love of the Art that is Soundcasting. We still have no real sponsors, just that freeloading Henderson's Pants outfit. Which means we're putting our time with no recompense, and I'm shelling out dough-dee-oh-dough out of my pocket for the production costs. That's 11+ years of taking on the chin for this medium! We used to have a Donate button but I'm not sure what happened to it. We are technically Amazon Associates but I don't know where those links that brought in our pittance went, either. Maybe we should do the Patreon thing? I don't know. You guys just want to Venmo us some money? Hey. THAT could work. Let's give it a try. Open up your Venmo app and send along what you want. A buck? FIVE bucks? A ten-spot? TWENTY Dollars?! Just Venmo it me – my handle is @Hershco. That's the @ sign and H-E-R-S-H-C-O. Shoot along a little message and we'll give you muchos gracias on the show! Has any soundcast even attempted this before? Let's make history!!! Speaking of history, last week in this very same feed you could catch the aforementioned Tyson Saner holding court for Epi323, and he had a cavalcade of comedy soundcast clippage for you. Well, three clips. Is that enough to, technically, be a cavalcade? I'm not sure. Let's look it up… Hmm. “Cavalcade. Noun. Definition 1: A procession of riders or ships. Definition 2: A dramatic sequence or procession: SERIES.” So there. Last week's show was definitely a cavalcade. Way to go, Tyson! You can still catch that show, “The Autumn Triple Play”, which included snippets from On The Rocks: Where Celebrities & Cocktails Mix, Gutting the Sacred Cow, and Chatabix. The episode still resides on Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, Amazon Music, iHeart Radio, Audible.com, Soundcloud, Podchaser, Podbay, and wherever finer soundcasts are streamed and/or download. That includes our own homesite, SuccotashShow.com, which contains the entire treasure trove of installments dating back to 2011. For this week's late-to-the-party-pal mess, which I'm calling “Debate, Argument, Brits & Smut”, you're in for some clips from If I Were You, The Legal Geeks, Off Menu, and Pornomedy. Henderson's Pants is once again riding our coattails with a freebie spot for their classic BauTrau Pants – classic because the references in the commercial are so damn old. CLIPS If I Were YouOur first clip comes from a show that has just passed the 560 episode mark! It's If I Were You, from HeadGum, and featuring hosts Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld. Both these guys are all over HeadGum because they've been there since it started. This show, If I Were You, drops every Monday and features the host-ages offering advice in realms that they both are and are not qualified to speak on. They invite listeners to send in their own “sticky situations” as they put, and they will try to help find a solution. Our clip comes from their milestone Epi560, entitled Mile High Club, and their listener query gets them talking about UFOs and ghosts. The Legal GeeksThis next clip is from not only a show I mentioned I was going to be on, namely The Legal Geeks, but it's from the show I WAS on and, in fact, features me along with show host Joshua Gilliland and some other attorneys. He co-hosts the show with Jessica Mederson but she was traveling the week I was asked to be an “expert witness” along with a bunch of other legal eagles, including Gregory Pang and a cast of their regulars. The show's entitled “Review of The She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law – Episode 5” and, because my day job finds me in the world of branding, trademarks, and other such intellectual property, or “IP”, Josh invited me along to ring on some of the trademark issues that the Jessica Walters character (played by Tatiana Maslany) has to tangle with in that episode. Namely, She-Hulk gets sued for trademark infringement over the use of the She-Hulk name by one of her enemies. Backstory on The Legal Geeks soundcast: These real lawyers, headed up by Josh and Jessica, sound off on legal issues faced by fictional characters – everything from the MCU to the Star Wars Universe. Not just on the soundcast, but they show up to places like ComicCon in San Diego and run mock trials based on situations that crop up in these TV shows, movies, comic books, and so forth. Definitely check ‘em out! Off MenuThis next soundcast is where the “Brits” part of this week's title comes from. It's Off Menu, featuring a pair of British comedians, Ed Gamble and James Acaster. Each episode, they invite a guest into what they term their “magical restaurant” to choose their favorite starter (that's an appetizer to us Yanks), main course, side dish, dessert, and drink. It's all just a glorious excuse to deep dive into heady – and sometimes silly – convo with their guests. A recent episode featured the fantastic, amazing, and England's national treasure Richard E. Grant. This clip goes form the silly to the sublime, as Richard slides into how his late wife's last wish fueled his recently released memoir, A Pocketful of Happiness. PornomedyLast show off the bench today is only so because of alphabetization. It's a new soundcast, just a few episodes in, entitled Pornomedy. It's hosted by a good friend of Succotash, Monica Hamburg, who has not only had a couple of soundcasts over the past bunch of years that we've been on, but was our special guest co-host WAY back on Episode 64 in July of 2013, almost 10 years ago. She sent in this clip of Pornomedy, along with a note from which I quote the following: “Hi Marc: I hope you are doing well! So... I started a new podcast recently. "Pornomedy" which explores the weird world of free porn sites: Absurd porn comments (as though any aren't!), terrible titles, baffling tags - and more. This time, hilarious Baltimore comedian Mike Moran joins me. We speak of "The Chair" (i.e. It-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named) - as well as a porn commenter with maximum game, the right time to rent a truck for your porn film - and much more! This is only the 3rd episode of this new podcast (though it's on the feed with all the other shows I've done) but I like it. I hope you will too! (Of course, as always, no pressure if it's not right for the show ,etc.) Not right for the show – pfft! Oh, Monica, you DO go on! Okay, friend. That's about enough of that. And by “that” I mean this Episode 324 of Succotash. If you want more, there are always the archives OR pour some fresh Succotash into your ears next week when Tyson Saner brings you episode 325, which is sure to delight. I'm out of here but not before reminding you that if you're even wandering down a dark, lonely street in the middle of the night, and a shimmering figure emerges from the darkness and floats a few inches off the payment towards you to ask, “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite holodeck adventures in the Star Trek universe! Nathan and Eppy go back to the Ancient West in TNG S6E8: A Fistful of Datas. The Enterprise has some well-deserved downtime, and Worf can't invent enough work to keep him from joining his son Alexander in the Ancient West town of Deadwood. Elsewhere, a test of Data's interface with the ship crosses some wires, and suddenly the villains of the Western adventure... are all Data. Sure, it's a silly episode, but it's also charming in its enthusiastic homage to Western films, and we had a really fun time talking about it! Happy April, everyone! For many people alarmed at the very visible anti-Black racism at the outset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine two weeks ago, it's important to understand more about the history of Afro Ukrainians and Africans in Ukraine. This conversation between Dr. Clarence Lusane and Nicole Lee sheds some light. We'll learn that it is not a new history. Dr. Lusane, who has traveled and taught in Ukraine and all over the world, shared that after Ghana became independent from British colonial rule in 1957, and in 1960 when 17 other African countries gained their independence from colonial rule, thousands of students arrived in both Russia and Ukraine to study from countries all over Africa, including South Africa, Morocco and Tanzania. Thousands. African students over the years have been drawn to Ukraine for studies including in STEM and medicine because it was relatively welcoming, inexpensive and easy to study there. In 2014, after Russia invaded Crimea, pro-Russian, fascist, nationalistic militias rose up in eastern Ukraine, taking over the Donetsk and Luhansk republics. It was here in the east that African students were kidnapped and violently abused by these pro-right insurgents. Now, in addition to these Africans having arrived to study 60-65 years ago, there are second and third generation Afro-Ukrainians in Ukraine, as well as other diasporic Africans. When Putin refers to neo-Nazism in Ukraine he is, not surprisingly, twisting facts and history. As is true most everywhere in the world, there are neo-Nazis in Ukraine, even serving in the Ukrainian government. Despite that, neo-Nazism does not drive Ukrainian public policy. This conversation gets to the important nuance missed in reporting and social media. There is an important challenge toward the end responding to the question “What is the way forward for progressives?” We hope you'll listen in. About Dr. Clarence Lusane: Dr. Clarence Lusane is a full Professor and former Chairman of Howard University's Department of Political Science. He is an author, activist, scholar, lecturer, and journalist. He has been in the fight for national and international human rights and justice for well over 40 years. He is a pioneer in anti-racism politics. He has written about and been active in U.S. foreign policy, democracy building, and social justice issues such as education, criminal justice, and drug policy. His research focuses on the intersection of race and politics in the US and globally ranging from human rights and social equity to social movements and public policy. As a scholar, researcher, policy-advocate, and activist, he has traveled to over 70 nations. He has lectured on U.S. race relations and human rights in Brazil, Colombia, China, Cuba, Germany, Guyana, Guadeloupe, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Korea, Pakistan, Panama, Rwanda, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine among others. He has taught and been on the faculty at Medgar Evers College, Columbia University and American University, and been a visiting professor and lecturer in the UK, Ukraine, France, Russia, South Korea, New Zealand and Japan. In addition to his forthcoming book,Twenty Dollars and Change: Harriet Tubman vs. Andrew Jackson, and the Future of American Democracy, he is also the author of The Black History of the White House, Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice: Foreign Policy, Race, and the New American Century; Hitler's Black Victims: The Experiences of Afro-Germans, Africans, Afro-Europeans and African Americans During the Nazi Era; Race in the Global Era: African Americans at the Millennium; and Pipe Dream Blues: Racism and the War on Drugs among others.

Lori wanted Salmon tonight for dinner, so I went grocery shopping earlier this morning. I DO NOT EAT SALMON! If you do, if you can, cool, but it is just too oily a fish taste for my pallet! I usually get myself shrimp and scallops. After today, no more scallops! They have price inflated to TWENTY DOLLARS for a fresh batch of 12 in a container! Last time I paid just under TEN BUCKS for the same little carton! WOW! Doubled the price in a month! Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite fictional characters in the Star Trek universe! Nathan and Eppy discuss the adventures of Captain Proton in Voyager S5E12 Bride of Chaotica! Tom Paris and Harry Kim just want to have a nice time playing out the latest chapter of the Captain Proton holonovel, but the ship runs afoul of photonic beings that think the black-and-white pulp is real. Of course, the only way to solve this mess is for Captain Janeway to take on the role of Arachnia in order to bring the vile Dr. Chaotica down before the program causes real destruction to the photonic visitors. Everyone in this one is clearly having a blast, and we really enjoyed talking about it! Happy April, everyone! Vic Fontaine's lounge is suddenly taken over by a hidden variable in his always-on program, the bridge crew has to pull together to help out their holographic buddy. I hate it when people feel the need to approach you so they can comment on or question something about an article of clothing you’re wearing. Unless they give you cash after they do. It still sucks, but it helps ease the frustration. Also, I win a battle but not the war in this week’s reading.

Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite fictional characters in the Star Trek: TNG universe! Nathan and Eppy discuss the second appearance of holographic Prof. Moriarty in S6E12 Ship in a Bottle. Data and Geordie are just trying to enjoy some simple Sherlock Holmes programs on the holodeck, but there's some kind of fluctuation - and when Reg Barkley takes a look, it allows Moriarty to escape the hell of being trapped in system memory. He quickly launches a plan to con the access codes to the Enterprise out of Captain Picard, bringing us into a fun con-counter-con story. Happy April, everyone! Luke and Jay spend this episode digging into the peculiar American institution of the civil jury: recruiting your fellow citizens to decide disputes over everything from a cow to a global corporation. The civil jury grows in response to concerns about courts of equity: In revolutionary America (and in England), parties could choose whether to have their cases decided according to law or according to a separate equitable judicial system. Americans aren't willing to let the equity system continue without juries, so we wind up with the Seventh Amendment. Yet this raises a question: When does the common law begin or end? As it turns out, the founding generation simply asserts that the English common law applies up to revolution and then lets things run after that. However, always skeptical of the citizenry, the states resist implementing the civil jury, and despite the 14th Amendment, the civil jury has never been incorporated against the states. The guys dig deeply into the ideology and the empirical evidence underpinning hostility to the civil jury, but ultimately side with the civil jury as a virtuous institution reflective of the Founders' devotion to citizen power.

Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite fictional characters in the Star Trek: TNG universe! Nathan and Eppy discuss the character of Dixon Hill as introduced in S1E11 The Big Goodbye. When Captain Picard decides to destress by bringing up his favorite noir detective program on the newly upgraded holodeck, it all seems like fun and games - until a remote probe sends things haywire and the fictional and real dangers facing the Enterprise start to converge. This is a well-constructed episode with some poignant moments among all the scenery chewing. (Happy April, everyone!) Apologies for the audio issues in this recording - but, while this episode started as a "prank" we really did enjoy discussing this episode, and pulled some real lessons out of in our second half as well. A Golden Girls episode in which Dorothy's horse racing addiction returns gives us a chance to feature the life and career of the one-and-only Beatrice Arthur. From her upbringing in Maryland to the discovery of her gift for comedy, from her two hit shows to her spotty movie career, from her formidable perfectionism to her charitable works, she was a complex person and an artist the likes of which we won't see again. We'll also finally look at Terry Hughes, the director of over 100 Golden Girls episodes who helped make the show what it is. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
