Trash Free Trails are an important part of improving the environments in which we ride, and just as importantly, helping mountain biking be seen as a positive addition to the outdoors communities to which we belong. In addition to that they have some incredible projects that touch other important areas too. The EWS in Tweed Valley was a Trash Free Trails Approved event so while I was there, I took the opportunity to sit down for a catch up with Chloe Parker and Rich Breeden to find out what Trash Free have been up to over the past year and what awesome stuff is still to come. Martin Whiteley is someone who likes to work behind the scenes, however, many of you will know his name. From the mid-80s onwards, Martin has been involved with the growth of mountain biking, and through his time as CEO of Australian Cycling, working at the UCI and running some of the biggest downhill race teams in history, Martin has played a role in shaping our sport into what it is today. With all this history, it's hard to pick and choose what to cover, so this episode is pretty long and I've split it into two parts. Part one covers Martin's background and his time at the UCI. We hear about his work with Global Racing, G-Cross Honda, Trek World Racing and the YT Mob, and get his thoughts on talent development. Part two will be dropping tomorrow, where we'll talk about Red Bull, the Discovery takeover, athlete management and plenty more. For now, here's part one. Rab Wardell is a talented multi-discipline mountain biker who came up through the ranks of cross country racing to reach World Cup level. Along the way, there have been numerous ups and downs with overtraining and bouts of depression, that have led Rab to question himself and to step away from racing. We sat down for a chat at the Tweed Valley EWS where Rab was racing the insanely tough ebike event. Rab's open and honest approach, to what has been a challenging career so far, was refreshing and shows just how hard it can be to make it in our sport. It also shows that you can come back from low points in your life and Rab offers some insight into how he did that. Rab also share's some wisdom on over-training and how to fuel events that I hope you'll find really useful. So sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Rab Wardell. Matt and Andrea start the show with talk about trainer failures and wins with their Wahoo Kickr. Andrea has heard from a lot of Australians about KFC. Kenny broke his Surron, and Andrea has a pet yard deer that she won't be eating any time soon. Matt demoed a Spot Ryve 115, too. Listener questions: Where does the crew want to vacation? What forks have bushing play? Are volume spacers necessary? Why won't Kenny try knobbier tires? What do we think about Chris King stuff? Classified Rear Hubs: Discuss. Is pedal kickback a problem with high engagement hubs? How do we carry tools and things when we ride? KENNY HAS A FUMPA
Brian will be the first to admit, his new bike trainer setup was absolutely a pandemic purchase; but he's hoping that these will be items that he will use for many years to come!

Welcome to Episode 42 of the BikeShop BF (boyfriend) Podcast! In this episode, I delve into a review of the Wahoo Kickr Climb indoor trainer companion unit to the Wahoo Kickr lineup, with some thoughts as to "who this is for?" / The shop is in a 'seasonal transition' or better known as 'shoulder'-season as things begin to wind down for the Autumnal part of the retail year. So what's a fella to do? One word, "revenge!"/ Apart of the downtime portion of the year beginning to kick in, it is also a time of year for full-on shenanigans/ introduction of a new segment "Here's a thought!" about 'brand neutral' contact points? Does it matter to you?/ We finish this podcast with a mega-two-wheeled race week in #innsbrucktirol2018 and hopefully you noticed a different 'feel' to the sound of the podcast, let me know what you think? I continue the IRONMAN© Chattanooga 70.3 series with a friend I met on course prior to the start of the race. He talks about first how he is just truly grateful to even compete after a very interesting day in 2013 at IRONMAN© Cozumel. After that race, his entire perspective on racing and training morphed into a more humble and safety oriented way of doing things. He talks about his training going into the race with the help of his coach. Bret mentions how he is a member of BASE Performance and uses their products to train and race with. He will be recovering shortly and then ramping back up for IRONMAN© Louisville later this year in October. -Enjoy the show. In today's show Anthony and Aaron look back on Greg Van Avermaet's win in Hell of the North - Paris Roubaix. They talk live with Commonwealth Games Champion, Allan Davis. Allan reflects on Matt Hayman's Roubaix win in 2016, talks about Eddie Dunbar's win at the weekend in Tour of Flanders and tells us how to maximise your chances of becoming a pro cyclist. The lads also chat Peter Sagan's disappointing classics campaign. Did Sagan's results match his form? We also get through questions in the #aska1 section. 1. What's the best cycling book we've ever read? 2. What's a better product Wahoo Kickr or Wattbike? 3. Zwift, Sufferfest or Trainer Road? In tech news the lads look at a potential solution to the disc brake problem in professional cycling. T Red have developed a new carbon fiber disc brake cover which could gives us the the protection from the spinning blades without compromising on the stopping power of the braking system. Founded in 2013 by former Irish pro-cyclists Anthony Walsh and Aaron Buggle, A1 Coaching is an internationally recognised coaching company focused on improving performances of cyclists and triathletes. Shane, Nathan and Simon are back together for the first time in a couple of episodes to discuss all matters Zwift. The boys kick off with a discussion on how “refuseniks” now seem to be flocking into Zwift; catch up on the latest Zwift on iOS chatter and summarise how things have been going in Australia as the end of the indoor season nears. There’s a short feature comparing the noise emitted by the new Wahoo KICKR compared to the older version and a discussion on whether noise could be the new battleground in the fiercely-competitive Smart Trainer market. After hearing from Zwifter Peter Maloney about how he’d like to find other Zwifters riding on with multiple sclerosis by changing his name to indicate he has the condition, Simon, Shane and Nathan go on to discuss the tendency for people to change their real names in the game, wondering whether anonymity is a good thing or not. One of the KISS race series organisers Glen Knight is on the Zwiftcast to discuss the upcoming Tacx World Championships and Simon, Shane and Nathan discuss which nation may be favourite to take the title. Experienced Zwifter Antony Henson tests out two of the top of the range trainers, to help Zwifters who may be in the market for a Smart Trainer this season to make a decision. Is the Tacx Neo or the Wahoo KICKR the best buy? And veteran indoor rider Colin Peerman gives his verdict on the value of the best Smart Trainers – compared to the many other trainers he’s owned. Simon, Shane and Nathan round off this edition with a lively discussion on how race starts can best be regulated in Zwift.
Catherine Juon only recently started doing triathlons, but she's already completed her first half at 70.3 Muncie. As an entrepreneur and active mother, Catherine believes triathlon has given her great perspective and many lessons. Her #1 regret is that she didn't start them earlier! Tune in to hear how why Catherine now owns a FatTire Bike and jumps into trail half marathons. She also shares some of her lessons learned as a beginner, which are great! Mentioned In This Episode RAGBRAI Zwift and Wahoo Kickr combination…..group rides. I’m chatting with Chris Parker, the founder of the UK Zwifters group, about the latest on the FB groups, including the Watopia extension and swearing in-game. CEO Eric Min tells us what plans Zwift has to clean up profane text messages. Zwift staffer Steve Beckett reveals – a little – about some Zwift news due to be revealed in full at the Tour Down Under. New Zwifter Marcus Neal has a great story to tell – uplifting and positive – about how Zwift and cycling have changed his life. In a two part interview with Steve Beckett, offers some fascinating glimpses of what’s likely to be in the Events Module and Steve is forthright about what constitutes good group riding. We also discuss the soon-to-come Mountain Route and talk a little about the “Zwift vision”. The Tacx Neo and the Wahoo Kickr, top of the list of most desirable trainers, go head-to-head in a Zwiftcast test and review segment. And we meet the Voice of Zwift, ace racing commentator Nathan Guerra.
Support the Podcast by doing your shopping on Amazon.com this holiday season!Gift Ideas for Beginner Triathletes: New goggles - Nothing worse than cheap goggles that leak. It's a low cost way to make a big impact on your triathlete. Dave likes the TYR Special Ops 2.0 Transition Goggles http://amzn.to/1l0H17y because they are photochomatic so you only need one pair for indoor/hazy day or outdoor/sunny day. They're only $23.27 a pair right now on Amazon. A good Bike tool - Trust us... they need one. I like the Crank Brothers Multi Bicycle Tool (17-Function). It's 27.99 on Amazon (http://amzn.to/1IsSCRJ) and its small enough to fit in the saddle bag, a jersey pocket or even in the bento box. Bike Trainer - It's the winter and even down in Texas we spend a lot of time on the trainer. CycleOps Mag+ Trainer w/Adjuster would be what I would get if I were buying now. It's on amazon for $175.99. http://amzn.to/1l0GXF2 Gift Ideas for experienced Triathletes: Book - How Bad Do You Want It?: Mastering the Psychology of Mind over Muscle by Matt Fitzgerald (http://amzn.to/1l0IRp7). Almost every athlete I talk to wants to know how to get better with their mental game. Matt's book does that. It's around $15 on Amazon. Coaching - That's right... pop for their coach. If they haven't had one, give them a month or two of coaching to get them started. It should cost between $150 and $500 dependent on the coach and the services they include. Wahoo Kickr Bike Trainer - This is a computer or smartphone/tablet controlled resistance trainer (http://www.wahoofitness.com/devices/wahoo-kickr-powertrainer.html). This will take your loved one's training to another level. Add a ZWIFT (http://zwift.com/) account and you turn training into a competitive video game. Kickrs are available at your best local bike shop, like Tri Shop and retail for about $1,200. Randy’s Top Holiday Weekend Deals TomTom Multisport - $99.00 33% off (http://amzn.to/1PXiTQ7). If you don’t have a GPS watch and you are on a budget, this is a no brainer. This model was my first multisport watch and it packs a lot of features-even at the retail price- for the money. It doesn’t support power meters but has an easy interface and at $99 this is less expensive than some stand alone heart rate monitors and run-only GPS watches. Note that it doesn’t come with a heart rate strap or monitor but see below Jarv Bluetooth Smart HR Monitor - $30 (http://amzn.to/1jw6XGG) This low cost Bluetooth smart HR monitor will work with your Tomtom devices, iPhones and Androids, and a multitude of other devices. I haven’t personally tested this device but at $30 and buying through amazon with their liberal return policy, you probably can’t go wrong here if you are looking for a low cost GPS solution. Garmin Heart Rate Run $40 which is 60% off (http://amzn.to/1jw6ZOK). If you need a replacement for your Garmin devices, I’ve never seen the Garmin HR Run this cheap. Fenix 3 $100 off Watch and Watch Bundles (http://amzn.to/1PXiPzJ). The latest release of the Fenix 3 includes almost all of the 920’s multisport features and includes a ton of features that any outdoorsman will find useful. Garmin Vivofit GPS Smartwatch $169/199 32% off (http://amzn.to/1PXiM6T). This very capable activity and GPS device will cover most needs with the exception of a full blown multisport mode. If you’ve already got an Ant + HR monitor then you don’t need to buy the bundle. Withings Smart Scales $69/$99 Normally $99/$159 (http://amzn.to/1PXiNHY) Randy pulled the trigger on the WS-50 Scale on Friday. Right now it looks like the WS-50 scales are sold out because Randy can only find them for $149. He paid $99. However, the WS-30 is still available at $69 which is the lowest these scales have ever been. Both scales will sync with Training Peaks, MyFitnessPal, and a cornucopia of other apps. Connects through your wireless home network. Wahoo 20% off any 1 item with coupon code TURKEY: Note, not valid on any trainers, ELEMNT, or RFLKT. Available on Wahoo’s site. Ends Sunday, Nov 29th. Although this doesn’t cover trainers, it will cover the Tickr which is probably the most versatile HR monitor on the market.
