The NeoLiberal Round
Overcoming Addiction: African Spirituality and Agency

The NeoLiberal Round

Duron Zuri joins me on the Show to share his short story about how he beat his addiction. It is a story of letting go and letting God he said, tapping into his African Spirituality and developing a consciousness that helped to build his"agency". What is "Agency"? According to Prof. Mazama, Africologists and Chair of the Africology Department at #templeuniversity stated in a Lecture that, agency is the ability to act in one behalf, to move in a way that improves self or for self-improvement. Many struggle to act in ways that help themselves due to a lack of agency. This Agency is what Afrocentricity promotes to challenge the perceptions about people in Africa who lack agency to act in ways that Africans and people have always worked for one's betterment. Faith helps to facilitate this agency, not a Christian one or a Jewish one, but one that speaks to a people's culture and center that revolutionizes consciousness. #africology then becomes an essential aspect of helping to reduce recidivism since it facilitates the development of agency and a change in perception and consciousness, a necessary step towards sobriety and recovery. Good Morning it's Saturday July 31st, and this is The Wenatchee World's newest podcast, Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.    Today - A collection of Wenatchee-area residents is in the early stages of forming an art alliance. They want to be a support system for artists in the community and a resource to connect residents with artists.   Before we jump in, we're excited to let you know that Wenatchee Wine & Food Fest is back this year on August 28th at the Town Toyota Center! Ticket holders will get a chance to sample small pours of amazing local wines, local ciders and beers… and of course, enjoy tasty bites from area restaurants and caterers.   Make sure to get tickets in advance! We'll see you there!   -   Now our feature story...   A collection of Wenatchee-area residents is in the early stages of forming an art alliance. They want to be a support system for artists in the community and a resource to connect residents with artists.   Kmbris Bond, the chairperson of the group explained - looking at other cities and towns that have kind of an art hub, those centers really help people stay connected to each other. And though Wenatchee has so many rich arts available, Bond said we really don't have that connective center.   An art alliance that previously operated in Wenatchee folded decades ago, and Bond said several other groups have tried and failed to revive it. But members are confident that the time is right.   A seven-member steering team consisting of local artists, educators and activists are surveying residents to see what they're looking for.    While they don't have any financial resources yet, the group did just receive a grant through the Community Foundation for a strategic planner.    The grant didn't include money, though the group is optimistic about receiving grant money in the future.   Scott Bailey, a committee member and the director of Wenatchee Valley College's Art Program, said this group will eventually need to hire someone to run it full time.    The previous efforts to establish an art alliance were on a volunteer basis, which isn't necessarily sustainable in the long term.   For now, there's no timetable to be fully operational. Several steps will need to be taken before the alliance actually becomes a reality.   In addition to talking to a strategic planner, the group is trying to form partnerships in the region. They'll also need to be either an established nonprofit or fiscally sponsored by one.   And finally, several members said for the group to be functional long term, they'll also need to seek out other grant funding opportunities.   And as I mentioned, the group is also surveying Wenatchee residents, to see what the size and scope of the alliance should be.    More than 80 people have filled out the survey so far.   Bond says people seem passionate about this.    By establishing a support network, the group would hopefully help inspire more art in the community while also motivating artists to stay in Wenatchee.   To read more on this story visit us at wenatcheeworld.com   Also,    The state Redistricting Commission is holding an online public outreach from 1 to 3 p.m. today. It's for residents of the 8th and 10th Congressional Districts.   Washington congressional districts are redrawn every 10 years in consensus with the release of new census data.   Now, District 8 is a mix of suburban and rural areas, including East Wenatchee, Wenatchee, the Cascade Mountains and parts of King and Pierce counties. And Democrat Kim Schrier currently represents the district.    The meeting is part of the commission's efforts to better understand communities that have common interests as they weigh redistricting. It'll be streamed online through TVW's website, tvw.org, in English and Spanish.    Afterwards, the full meeting with ASL interpretation will be available on the Washington State Redistricting Commission YouTube channel.   Before we continue, a special thanks to our friends and sponsors at Confluence Health. The team at Confluence Health is grateful for the trust the community puts in them every single day. They are diligently working to improve the health and quality of life for our friends and neighbors. They are Grateful | They are Confluence Health.  Learn more by visiting them at ConfluenceHealth.com   Next,    Voters who live in the public hospital district served by Three Rivers Hospital are being asked for a one-year special levy that will raise $840,000.   The ballot measure, if approved on August 3rd, will cost property owners 33 cents per $1,000 of assessed value. It would be collected in 2022.    The hospital district, which includes areas of Douglas and Okanogan counties, provides service from Mazama to Monse to Mansfield.    Money raised from the special levy will be used to pay for healthcare services and facility expansion, maintenance and development.   Services include an emergency room, physician clinic and acute care hospital.   In order for this to be approved, it requires a 60% yes vote.    Ballots are due Tuesday.    Before we go, some local history,  Wenatchee Valley History is brought to you by NABUR [this is pronounced just like neighbor] – your trusted neighborhood community. William Guymer was born at Jamestown, North Dakota, in 1925. After graduating from Jamestown High, Bill entered the US Navy in March of 1943 during World War II. After basic training, Guymer became a Gunnery Mate and was assigned to the USS Mazama. The Mazama was a large Navy ammunition ship that served in the Pacific. Navy ammunition ships were named after volcanoes -- mountains that could explode. Ammunition ships could do the same. The Mazama was named after Mount Mazama, a collapsed volcano in the Cascade Range in Oregon.

What does it mean to be 'authentic'?No, serious question here. What does it mean?To some, being 'authentic' is the mirage we create for superficial consumption. You know the ones, where everything seems to just be going right for them. Shoot, social media has all but incentivized it but deep down you know that something about it is just...'off'.For Bud Torcom, being authentic means just being himself. It's getting past the fear of judgement to a place where you can explore parts of yourself you didn't know. And sometimes? Hey everyone! Super excited about today's guest on the podcast. It is the one and only Founder & President of Deschutes Brewery Gary Fish. This guy started the craft brewing scene in Bend back in 1986. And he's built the empire that we all know as Deschutes Brewery. With epic beers like Black Butte Porter and Fresh Squeezed IPA the list goes on and on. Actually their brewery is just on the other side of our studio right here. So I was just like, why don't we get Gary on? We get into some really awesome educational stuff on how to build a business from the ground up. Going into how he was looking to have just a successful pub. But guess what? It wasn't successful. But the beer was. So he pivoted, and BOOM! Now we have Deschutes. Get into a lot of stuff on how he ticks. I hope you're able to pick up some of this stuff and apply it in your own business leader enterprises. Brought to you by Mazama media! Experiencing Crater Lake in Oregon: Podcast Show Notes   Welcome to Experiences you should Have. Your how-to guide for amazing experiences. Today we are journeying to a very special place called Crater Lake.     My First Visit to Crater Lake I live in Bend, Oregon, which is in central Oregon and I have made an annual trip to Crater Lake the last 9 years. The first time I went to Crater Lake, I had my friend Ben drive, so I could be the one looking out the window, plus he had seen it before.   It took about 2 hours to get there from Bend (99 miles) and after we checked into the gate (and paid our $10), we drove a little further and then we stopped at a lookout at the top of the hill. I got out of the car and there in front of me was the deepest most amazing blue I have ever seen in my entire life.   The vastness of Crater Lake and the deep blue I saw in front of me took my breath away. The wind started to pick up and then a chipmunk appeared below my feet and started to scurry around looking for food. But that moment, being in front of this deep blue caldera, changed me. It made me appreciate Oregon in a new way.   You may or may not know what a Caldera is, but a caldera is a crater left behind after a volcanic eruption. Water filled this giant caldera after Mt. Mazama erupted in 2290 BC. When I stood at the top of Crater Lake and scanned across and looked at the perimeter and realized the power and intense eruption that must have happened.   What Caused Crater Lake?   A giant, earth-shattering eruption of Mt. Mazama created what know as Crater Lake today. The eruption happened 7,700 years ago and it began from a single vent on the northeast side of Mt. Mazama. When the eruption hit, it was a true eruption that you might think of in your head. Ash and pumice burst into the air, reaching as high as 30 miles above the ground. Mazama ash has been found in Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah, and even in multiple Canadian provinces (Wikipedia).   Why Should You Visit Crater Lake?   There’s something about looking at the deep blue water of Crater Lake (which is the deepest lake in the United States and 9th deepest in the world), that makes you realize how powerful nature is, and calming at the same time. Here this beautiful tranquil deep blue lake with a depth of 594 ft came from a mighty eruption more than 7,000 years ago. To stand there at the edge of the Caldera brings a new perspective on life and the power of mother nature.     When is the best time to go to Crater Lake? The lake is open year-round, however not all the entrances are open year-round and you can only drive completely around the lake starting around early July through September and sometimes early October. I would recommend visiting Crater Lake in mid to late July because fire season starts in Oregon in mid to late August and goes through September. You can check the latest road and entrance conditions here.   You will want to plan your trip on a sunny day and on a day where the clouds are higher than the top of Crater Lake. We’ve gone to Crater Lake where clouds have covered the entire Caldera and had to wait more than a day for the clouds to clear (check out the video below). Crater Lake is around 6,000-foot elevation, so you want the clouds to be higher than 6,000 feet, so plan accordingly.   Can you Camp at Crater Lake? Yes and no. There are campgrounds near Crater Lake, but there are no campsites that have a view of Crater Lake. Even if you have an RV, you can not park it overnight around the lake. Mazama and Lost Creek are the two nearby campsites and both open late June or early July and are open through September (sometimes early October).   Mazama campsite can fit RV’s up to 50’, while the Lost Creek campsite if for tents only. You can reserve these Mazama and Lost Creek campsites online.   Can you spend the night on the edge of Crater L...

Mazama Village Campground in Crater Lake National Park puts you close to the natural beauty of Crater Lake National Park. Oregon's only national park is home to the nation's deepest lake. This phenomenon was created when the volcano Mount Mazama collapsed over 7000 years ago. A massive caldera was left behind, creating Crater Lake. The waters of this generous basin are known for their incredible purity and color. The surrounding natural setting is equally as stunning. Theresa suggests maybe its less about ability and more about personality. What’s worse, stunting our children's development or having to accept they may be totally different than you? Both seem like a reason to hide in the bathroom. Plus Biz gets thumb tacky, Theresa takes cover and we talk to Temple University professor and mother Dr. Ama Mazama about the growing trend and reasoning behind home schooling for African American children. Check out Dr. Mazama in The Atlantic piece by Jessica Huseman that brought her to our attention and pick up her book The Afrocentric Paradigm to learn more about her field of study. Ama Mazama is a professor of African American studies at Temple University, a homeschooling mom, and author of the recently published a book African Americans and Homeschooling: Motivations, Challenges, and Opportunities. Today we will hear why she believes homeschooling is the best educational option for African American children.  I asked Ama about her decision to educate her own children at home, and why she felt the local public schools were not a viable option for her family.  We also talked about Ms Mazama's survey of African American homeschoolers, and about how schools perpetuate the oppressive status quo. Finally, Ama offers words of encouragement to families considering this option. Welcome to The Unschooling Life Podcast.   .
