It is a truth universally acknowledged that as a society we want successful, profitable companies because, as Jan Eeckhout says in The Profit Paradox: How Thriving Firms Threaten the Future of Work (Princeton UP, 2021), “we tend to accept that when firms do well, the economy does well”, even when that's not true. The rising tide, in some cases, does not lift all boats. Even when a few strong players have outsized gains, the rest of the market can suffer. These trends have a ripple effect over time that effectively separate economic winners, who keep an increasingly large share of benefits, from economic losers who struggle to compete, let alone maintain the standard of living achieved by their parents. In this book, Jan Eeckhout documents how a small number of large firms have been able to gain tremendous market power through a variety of mechanisms such as price manipulation, outsourcing, and leveraging new technical innovations. None of these are inherently wrong, but when used by powerful companies to reduce or eliminate potential competition, they lead to inefficient markets that weaken society. It is a case of excessive success, as companies narrowly focus on defending and increasing their profits without significant consideration for the externalities or unintended consequences of these market failures. Eeckhout presents an optimistic outlook of how we can retain the extensive advantages of economic growth while reversing some of these more dangerous trends. His recommendations for the future include leveraging what we've learned from prior generations who faced similar challenges, and building on the incredible technical innovations that have characterized the last few decades, including recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence.
Dominique talks about her recent The Most episode with Colin H. van Eeckhout of AMENRA. Together with Immi, she then discusses Tremaine Emory boldly releasing the Arthur Jafa collab that was previously shelved by Supreme through his own Denim Tears label. The duo also toasts to the Nike x Patta Running Team launch, marvel at its Dover Street Market installation and D's new Friends & Family status. Even after 25 years of being part of venue-scorching post metal phenom AMENRA, arguably one of the best live bands in the world, Colin H. van Eeckhout isn't planning on ending his quest towards fully embodying his highest self. The artist opens up about the enduring imprint of being a 20 year-old watching your father take his final breath and how that shaped everything after. He then delves into some of AMENRA's distinctive performance rituals and gives a couple of hard-learned strategies for keeping a touring 5-piece headstrong band together and thriving. Colin also shares his thoughts after making his stellar acting debut in the movie 'Skunk' (still in theatres) before discussing his upcoming solo album 'KALVARIE' - making its debut on Relapse Records soon.

In which we discuss Acts 10:25-11:18 as part of the developing distinction between Judaism and Christianity- namely from the inclusion of the righteous gentile Cornelius and his household into The Way. IMAGE: Gerbrand van den Eeckhout - Vision of Cornelius the Centurion, 1664. Oil on canvas. Created in Amsterdam, Netherlands, this piece is housed in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. Via Wikipedia: A dramatic play of light and shadow can add an emotional charge to the depiction of an event. This was the great lesson that Eeckhout absorbed from his teacher Rembrandt van Rijn in the late 1630s and was still using in 1664, when he signed and dated this painting. This is especially effective for representing contact between the human and the divine-here, the appearance of an angel to the Roman centurion Cornelius (Acts of the Apostles). The angel tells him to seek out St. Peter, who will then preach to him about Christ. Eeckhout also adopted Rembrandt's use of details to engage the viewer, such as the centurion's gestures of submission to greater authority-arms crossed on the chest and his officer's ceremonial war axe laid on the ground. The cistern at the left foreshadows Cornelius's baptism by St. Peter.

In this episode of the Ownership Economy, we connect with Professor Jan Eeckhout, a macroeconomist and labor economist and a Professor of Economics at the University of Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. Professor Eeckhout is the author of The Profit Paradox, which explores the secular trend since the 1980s in a consolidation of corporate power in the United States, its impact on labor and market competition, and the implications for modern democracies.

Amenra is an incredible band from Belgium that has been playing music for more than two decades now. As we celebrate episode #100, we get a lovely story about how the already iconic 'Silver Needle/Golden Nail' song, the opener for Amenra's 'Mass IIII' (2008) album, got its title. Neurosis and a couple of very different drinks are involved. And whaddya know, turns out that there is joy and jokes and friendship behind the gloomy hellscapes that are Amenra songs, too.

Stop reading. Start listening.
The share of national income going to workers has been trending downwards over time in many advanced economies, including in Europe. We discuss to what extent this development is really there in European data and what economic mechanism can account for it. We draw on insights provided by the following articles: Gutierrez & Piton, "Revisiting the Global Decline in the (Non-Housing) Share of Income", AER Insights, 2021, https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257/aeri.20190285 Kehrig & Vincent, "The Micro-Level Anatomy of the Labor Share Decline", Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2021, https://doi.org/10.1093/qje/qjab002 DeLocker and Eeckhout, "Global Market Power", working paper, 2020, https://crei.cat/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/GLOBAL.pdf
In this episode we sit down with the one and only Jim Eeckhout. As usual, Jim has tons of tales to share and this one is chalk full of adventure bowhunting at its finest!
In this episode, Prof. Jan Eeckhout of the University of Barcelona Pompeu Fabra, speaks about his most recent book: "The Profit Paradox - How Thriving Firms Threaten the Future of Work."
This weekend we catch up with our buddy Jim Eeckhout of Michigan. Jim is a great guy, great bowhunter, and great ambassador for traditional bowhunting. We discuss a wide range of topics from retaining new bowhunters, challenge vs reward, good old sweat equity, and of course bowhunting! Jim shares all about his most recent trip to Prince of Wales for coastal bruins, so there is plenty of action in this one!
The Profit Paradox describes how a handful of companies have reaped most of the rewards of technological advancements—acquiring rivals, securing huge profits, and creating brutally unequal outcomes for workers. The consequences are immense, from unnecessarily high prices, to fewer startups that can compete, to rising inequality and stagnating wages. Jan Eeckhout also offers concrete solutions about how to fix the problem and restore a healthy economy.

Global sales of counterfeits are growing at a furious 15 percent each year and have reached over US $1.82 trillion in 2020. This represents 3.3 percent of global trade (according to the OECD8), with e-commerce making up more than a quarter of that, according to the Global Brand Counterfeiting Report. The rise of digital channels facilitating the sale and purchase of consumer goods has indeed fueled a rapid increase in the trade of counterfeit products around the world. No retail products seem to be spared: from cosmetics to electronics, clothing and accessories, automotive parts, and even pandemic-related medical supplies. While we usually discuss the issue of counterfeiting in the context of large international groups, often in the luxury sector, with extensive brand portfolios, in practice, smaller brands may also be the targets and victims of this crime – with very high costs, too, for their business in the short and long run. What are the risks – for the revenue, the business, the brand – associated with counterfeiting as it relates to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)? What can be done, realistically, to prevent fakes and to remove them after they appear on the market? What about e-commerce platforms: is counterfeiting a necessary evil? Our guest is an expert in brand protection and practical anti-counterfeiting strategies especially as they apply to SMEs. Philippe Van Eekhout, a lawyer, is the CEO of ContrAtak, where he develops and implements impactful strategies to overcome counterfeiting- related issues, with a focus on serving SMEs. Prior to founding ContrAtak 15 years ago, he worked for LVMH Fashion Group as its Asia-Pacific anti-counterfeiting coordinator, and for the French company BIC as IP manager. Every two weeks, on Tuesday, Brand & New gives the floor to inspiring individuals, with a 360-degree vision, to help brand owners, intellectual property lawyers, and marketing and finance professionals (and beyond!) stay curious and agile in an ever-evolving business environment. Belgian Hardcore represent! I have Colin H. van Eeckhout from Amenra (who are much more than a hardcore band mind you) on the podcast today to talk about so many things including the longevity of the band (over 20 years!), transitioning into being a "full time" band and of course, the Belgian hardcore scene and him getting into heavy music. I just got into the band and feel dumb for not checking them out sooner, but I am glad I did. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com
Key Insights:There are a great many reasons to fear that the rise of industrial and post-industrial economic concentration is doing serious harm to the market economy’s (limited) ability to function as an efficiency-promoting societal calculating mechanism.None of these have yet been nailed down. But the neo-Brandeisians will have their chance because of the striking misbehavior of the tech platforms, which have thought too much about how to glue their users’ eyeballs to the screen so they can be sold ads and too little about how to make users and others happy and comfortable with their business models. That is, the neo-Brandeisians will have their chance to the extent that they are not blocked by justices who know little of the law and less of economics.Hexapodia!References:Autor, Dorn, Katz, Patterson, & Van Reenen (2017): Concentrating on the Fall of the Labor Share Autor, Dorn, Katz, Patterson, & Van Reenen (2017): The Fall of the Labor Share & the Rise of Superstar Firms Azar, Marinescu & Steinbaum (2017): Labor Market Concentration Berger, Herkenhoff, & Mongey (2019): Labor Market Power Blonigen & Pierce (2016): Evidence for the Effects of Mergers on Market Power & Efficiency De Loecker, Eeckhout, and Mongey (2021): Quantifying Market Power & Business Dynamism in the Macroeconomy De Loecker, Eeckhout, & Unger (2019): The Rise of Market Power & the Macroeconomic Implications Gutierrez & Philippon (2016): Investment-less Growth: An Empirical Investigation Noah Smith (2021): The Economists' Revolt &, of course:Vernor Vinge: A Fire Upon the Deep (Remember: You can subscribe to this… weblog-like newsletter… here: There’s a free email list.

In April this year some of the best European football clubs announced their plans to create a "Super League". Plans which were crushed unanimously by both players and fans alike only a couple of days later. In this episode we talk to Jan Eeckhout, Professor of Economics, about the Super League from an Economics perspective. We discuss which economic considerations may have influenced the idea to create a Super League, how the League could have impacted market power, and how these effects translate more generally to labour markets with dominant players like Amazon. Jan Eeckhout is Professor of Economics at UPF Barcelona with a research focus on labour markets and author of the book "The Profit Paradox. How Thriving Firms Threaten the Future of Work" (theprofitparadox.com).

This week we sit down to chat with our old buddy Jim Eeckhout. Jim is the exactly the kind of guy we had in mind when we launched the podcast! He's down to earth, humble, and an absolute killer with a stickbow. Jim has had some pretty incredible adventure and he does it the way it should be done, for the love bowhunting. Jim's long track record of successful bow hunts speaks for itself and it was a pleasure, as always, to sit down and chat with him!
The practice of having your food prepared by strangers in a public place goes back millennia but what makes a restaurant different from the many other dining options is that you can choose from a list of dishes, you can eat at a time of your rather than the cook's choosing and are usually served by a professional waiter in pleasant surroundings. There were fully-fledged restaurants in 12th-century China catering to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Six centuries later, the first European restaurants in Paris advertised themselves as places that offered good health, rather than just good food. The fashion for French-style dining quickly spread to other countries but it took over a century for the waiters, waitresses and kitchen staff – the very people who are crucial to the success of any restaurant - to be given half-decent working conditions and a modicum of recognition. Bridget Kendall discusses the development of the restaurant with historians Rebecca L. Spang, Patricia Van den Eeckhout, Luke Barr, Nawal Nasrallah and Christian de Pee. Rob and Ethan are joined by our good friends Bryan and Jim to discuss their plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the famed 1959 hunt on The Little Delta. Well documented by Fred and Glenn, this extraordinary undertaking takes us back to a time when modern archery was in its infancy, The Pope and Young Club was just an idea, and these two men were moving them both forward. In remembrance of this hunt Bryan and Jim are collecting all the era correct Bear Archery tackle and clothing they can find and plan to use it on their annual Alaskan Moose hunt. You see, these two are already highly successful bowhunters who already use new as well as vintage Bear Archery equipment. So please join us as they discuss the support and encouragement they have enjoyed from the traditional archery community and hear their hunt plans. I had the pleasure of meeting with Colin van Eeckhout, vocalist of Amenra, during their stop in Brooklyn on their current tour with Yob and Voivod. It was a beautiful afternoon, the sun was out and there was a hint of spring, so we decided to escape the dark confines of the venue to chat outside. It seemed like a great idea at the time, since Yob was bringing the thunder during their sound check, but for better or worse, you get an “authentic” New York experience with the sounds of the city mixing in with out conversation which covered a broad array of topics from ritual, the peaks and valleys of a 20 year music career and the roots of his own brand of spirituality.Intro: “Plus Pres de Toi"Outro: “Diaken” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
For the 9th episode of "Digital Explained to my Mom", I met Nicolas van Eeckhout, an entrepreneur passionate about Blockchain and how it could change the way we engage with each other. I met Nicolas via my brother Fouad (hi bro'!). Nicolas has a great passion for digital, technology and networking. Besides being the co-founder of Cogarius, he is the co-founder of the Meetup Blockchain-Ethereum group in Brussels.
For more than 70 years Michigan has been producing a large number of adventurous bowhunters and Jim Eeckhout is falls squarely in that category. Toting a Bear Takedown and wood arrows tipped with Bear Razorheads he has been successful with modern bowhuntings original gear. Mountain Goat, Black Bear, Whitetail, Turkey, Antelope...... Among most all the Western States, Alaska is often his destination and like Fred Bear it always ends up an adventure such as a Bear at 9 feet. I don't think we even scratched the surface. #Beararchery #Ihuntclose #pursueadventure Thanks to our sponsors; Selway Archery Zipper Bows Professional Bowhunters Society
Markups measure how much higher prices of output goods are relative to their marginal production costs. In other words, they measure the margin of revenue over variable costs. Recent literature, starting with De Loecker and Eeckhout (2018), reports that markups have substantially increased since 1980. At this event we will review the available empirical evidence on markups and investigate the implications for market concentration, market power, productivity, and economic growth. Speakers: Jan De Loecker, Professor, KU Leuven and Research Professor, Research Council (FWO) Chair: Georgios Petropoulos, Research Fellow, Bruegel Chiara Criscuolo, Head of Division, Productivity and Business Dynamics, OECD Fabien Curto Millet, Director of economics, Google Jeffrey Franks, Director, IMF Europe Office Reinhilde Veugelers, Senior Fellow, Bruegel

This week on the podcast we talk to Colin H. van Eeckhout of the blackgaze / ritual metal band Amenra! We chatted about the Church of Ra collective, writing a WWI memorial set for a special performance which included a bell tower, and evolving their music together without changing heart. Amenra has a number of great albums. The most recent, Mass VI, can be found on their Bandcamp. The best place to check out Talking to Ghosts is on our official website.

My guest today is Karl Smith, he is the director of economic research at the Niskanen center. Our topic for today will be market power. Karl has written a series of posts on the Niskanen center blog discussing markups and market power. The debate was sparked by a paper by Loecker and Eeckhout that claimed that average markups in the American economy had risen from 18 percent in 1980 to 67 percent today. There are many different interpretations one might have for this data. What Karl points out is that these markups have mainly risen among smaller firms. Wal-Mart has very low markups, but niche specialty firms such as the local vegan café have relatively high markups. This makes sense in the context of monopolistic competition, where consumers pay a small premium in return for greater product differentiation. Noah Smith had this response to Karl's article: "Robin Hanson and Karl Smith both have posts responding to De Loecker and Eeckhout’s paper and attacking the Market Power Story. Both give reasons why they think rising markups indicate monopolistic competition, rather than entry barriers. But both seem to forget that monopolistic competition causes deadweight loss. Just because it has the word 'competition' in it does NOT mean that monopolistic competition is efficient. It is not." As Tyler Cowen points out, this is not necessarily the case. What is inefficient in a partial equilibrium model may not be inefficient in a general equilibrium model.
