Caring For Young Widows In Nigeria - Diane Kalu

Grief Out Loud

In 2015, Diane Kalu was living in Nigeria with her husband and their three young children. One day, about eight weeks after the birth of their third child, Diane's husband went to work and never returned. A few days later she got the news that he dad died. She was suddenly a widow, responsible for raising three children under the age of five, in a country with several widowhood customs and traditions that are harmful to women. Thankfully, Diane had her mother to help her survive those early days of widowhood. Then, about five years after her husband's death, Diane's mother also died. Through both of these losses, Diane discovered a lot about herself, including a passion for helping others. That led her to start the WiCare Lekota Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting widows in Nigeria through social, emotional, financial, and educational support programs.  We discuss: Grieving for her mother Telling her children their grandmother died How her mother supported her after her husband died Grief brain fog and how Diane recovered her memory with singing & sticky notes Widowhood customs & traditions that are harmful for women The ways Diane broke with community expectations for widows Pity vs. compassion The mindset that helped Diane survive What Diane's husband would think of who she is now Starting the WiCare Lekota Foundation to support other widows WiCare on Facebook

Following a trail of back-to-back hits and raw, defiant anthems, Lone Kodiak drops their latest single, "Werewolf Girl," serving as both a capstone to an already remarkable year and an omen of what's to come. No better evidence of that can be found in the fact that the band enjoyed yet another premiere yesterday, this time with Vents Magazine. Known for their propulsive innovation and artful musings, the East LA quartet continues their ascent into the echelons of alternative rock. Emerging from the depths of a transformative creative process that birthed hits like "Corner Booth" and "Let's Hear It For The Kid," Lone Kodiak taps into a new level of musical maturation. Leaning into their proven versatility—inspired by iconic bands such as The Cure, Hum, and The Smashing Pumpkins—the group yet again redefines the auditory experience. If David Lynch ever wanted a soundtrack for the Twilight Zone of his dreams, "Werewolf Girl" would undoubtedly be his first choice. With a vibe that pays homage to b-movie horror and camp, the track unfolds like a rip-roaring cinematic escapade—fasten your seatbelt; it's a wild ride. It's as if Lone Kodiak decided to transmute every pulpy corner of pop culture into a kaleidoscope of brilliant melodies and choruses. The song is a synthesis of delirious fun and thoughtful reflection. In a surprising twist, the bridge offers a pause in the mayhem—a nuanced, emotional interlude that amplifies the band's signature aesthetic, akin to the sweeping grandeur of Band of Horses or Muse. But this is not a band to let you drift off into sonic nirvana. They pull you back down to earth with the gritty, grounding influences of Deftones and Young Widows, culminating in a haunting denouement that all but begs you to join in its moonlit lament. he release of "Werewolf Girl" is not just another single but a momentous step in Lone Kodiak's burgeoning legacy. Recorded at Big Bad Sound in Los Angeles, and produced by Kyle Mangels, the single captures the raw, elemental spirit that has propelled them onto the watchlist of anyone who knows anything about the future of rock. Join Lone Kodiak as they take a monumental stride into a future teeming with promise and sonic exploration. Stay tuned for more electrifying releases and upcoming projects that promise to set the alternative rock world ablaze. photo credit: Sarah Lee SOCIALS: facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lonekodiakbandInsta: https://www.instagram.com/lonekodiak/Youtubes: https://www.youtube.com/c/LONEKODIAKSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4fh2BIKYPFvXFsQLhaeVJp This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop Go get the 1 hour mini Documentary on Lowest of the Low's Classic Album Shakespeare my Butt at https://thelowdoc.gumroad.com/l/SMB

A few weeks from now, the new record by Jaye Jayle will hit the (digital) shelves and we were quite taken with it, because it fits like a glove to what we like. No, this is not Avantgarde Death Black Gothic Post-Drum'n'Bass, this is music without real borders, but for everyone who loves music for the soul. This is music in the vein of Edwards, Cohen, Johnson. Music that speaks directly to your core and that has the potential of becoming a cult classic - so you join before the hype sets in. Enjoy our interview with Evan Patterson and the many things he tells us about the record, its process and much more. Evan is surely not anybody in our little global scene as many of his bands have become well-known: The National Acrobat, Breather Resist, Black Cross, Black Widows, Young Widows and for a few years he's writing and publishing music as Jaye Jayle. What that name means is also explained in our interview, as well as why the new music has such a hopeful, wonderful, soulful sound in all its splendour and what Ben Chisholm has to do with it. Enjoy!

The pandemic offered Evan Patterson an opportunity he hadn't had in years; to take some time off from touring with his earth-shaking band Young Widows, his solo outfit Jaye Jayle and with his ex-wife's band Emma Ruth Rundle after he played 210 dates in 2019. The breather has given him perspective on making music and why he does it. It also gave him time to refine his artistic and screen printing skills again, and a chance to try his hand at carpentry, which turns out he's also got game at. With new music from Young Widows currently percolating, Evan is optimistic and prolific in this Louisivlle springtime, and now he's even looking forward to touring again in the very near future.

Poet, artist, and Daughters vocalist Alexis Marshall has announced his solo debut LP HOUSE OF LULL. HOUSE OF WHEN for July 23rd via Sargent House and along with it the first song and video for “Hounds In The Abyss”. Directed by Jeremy W., Marshall notes of the video's concept “The long stare into the room of self—the universe's middle distance—the many hidden doors we locate, the many rooms we find. Populated not only by whom else we are, but by places, we have been. The places we are. We don't always pull away from the hot stove.”' Produced by Seth Manchester the album is crafted around moments of spontaneity and sonic detritus. For the album, Marshall brought together an impressive group of collaborators to execute his vision, a vision that for the first time was under his full creative direction. Jon Syverson (Daughters), Kristin Hayter (Lingua Ignota), Evan Patterson (Jaye Jayle, Young Widows) joined Marshall in Pawtucket, Rhode Island at Machines with Magnets studio with no material. The strategy was to embrace new sounds, employ the element of chance, and capture the creative process in a song format. The genesis of a song could be anything—a fragmented piano line, a drum pattern—but the impetus was often a non-musical sound. Marshall sourced a lot of his textural contributions from a hardware store all contributing to a proto-industrial rattle-and-rumble reminiscent of early Einstürzende Neubaten. The resulting material stands to be the boldest and exciting work of his career. Moment of Meditation: Young Widows to Marry (1 Timothy 5:11-12)

As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. (1 Timothy 5:11-12) Young Widows to Marry True widows who had no one to care for them were registered with the congregation for help. Younger widows have a greater desire to remarry. Part of that registration was a vow of celibacy for the rest of their lives. What twenty-something or thirty-something widow is going to make such a vow? To completely write off any chance of finding love and remarrying? This is the pledge or vow that Paul cautions Timothy not to allow them to make. St. Paul continues, "I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander" (1 Timothy 5:14). Paul also says, "If they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion" (1 Corinthians 7:9). Burning with passion gives Satan the perfect opportunity for slander. Younger widows need not have this burden placed on them. So Paul tells Timothy to allow them to remarry. No judgment will befall them because they are keeping themselves pure in regards to their passion. Amen.

Show Notes: Ursula's review of Guest House for Young Widows, a book about women who joined ISIS, appeared in the last issue of The Point magazine. It references a few other books, such as Dunya Mikhail's  The Beekeeper of Sinjar (which gathers the testimonies of Yazidi women enslaved by ISIS) and David Thomson's The Returned, about French jihadis. Ursula's review of the Moroccan-French author Leila Slimani's latest novel, Le Pays des Autres, will be out soon in the New York Review of books. Slimani's The Perfect Nanny was an international best-seller; her new book is part of a planned historical trilogy set in Morocco. Adel Kamel's long-forgotten, now-remembered classic Malim al-Akbar recently appeared in English as The Magnificent Conman of Cairo. A special section on ArabLit marks the launch. Mahfouz talks briefly about the Harafish, his circle of literary friends, in Naguib Mahfouz at Sidi Gaber: Reflections of a Nobel Laureate, 1994-2001, from conversations with Mohamed Salmawy. Join us as Kim Vesey shares her story with us! Kim has been a Hospice Nurse for over 35 years and has been caring for dying patients about 13 of those years.  At the young age of 45, Kim became a widow with two children that were still in their teenage years.  Kim shares her journey of finding comfort in the arms of our Father in Heaven & how she now still leads a Young Widows support group. Kim then shares the heartbreaking story of losing her 29 year old daughter to complications from an asthma attack, leaving behind her 3 year old Warren.  God used Kim in a mighty way! Not only to help her grieve, but to help her grandson! He is now using Kim to help children all across the world!  Kim is a published author of the Children's book, “What Cloud Is My Mommy In?” This book is designed to help kids process emotions and to help them grieve in a healthy way.  Kim has also packed this book full of amazing resources for the adults helping the child dealing with loss.  Due to popular demand, this book is now the first of the series!  Thank you for sharing your story Kim of how God is present-even in the darkest times. Sometimes we are in so much pain, we can't even form thoughts or words to pray.....but know God is there.
