Hosted on Acast.

We answer some of our voluminous viewer mail this week, as listener Rob Hawksford joins for an intriguing look back at Portland, Oregon's pro soccer scene in the 1990s - when summertime indoor clubs known as the Pride (Continental Indoor Soccer League, 1993-97) and the Pythons (Premier Soccer Alliance, 1998 & World Indoor Soccer League, 1999) kept the sport alive after the collapse of the iconic outdoor NASL/WSA Timbers in 1990. Starting out as a game-day volunteer for the Pride during the CISL's inaugural 1993 season, Hawksford quickly found himself on the payroll in subsequent summers doing a variety of front office jobs - including General Manager, where he helped the club change venues (from Portland's aging Memorial Stadium to the state-of-the-art Rose Garden in 1996), leagues (bolting with three other teams to form the PSA in 1998), and nicknames (Pythons). In between, of course, a myriad of memories from one of the most interesting professional circuits in all of North American soccer - and a curious, but oft-forgotten footnote in Portland's long and storied "Soccer City USA" history.

The difference between feedback and validation. Regarding feedback: Don't be nice. Be honest. Our messaging is never done. You never “get it.” It's never right on spot. Our message is meant to evolve. It evolves as we do as humans and business owners. Trust in the feedback can lead to collaboration. We were never taught how to receive feedback. Recorded February 11, 2022, my conversation on this topic with Sarah Fejfar has been sitting in the can until a time when I was moved by timing to release it. That time is now. Topics How attending one event changed the trajectory of Sarah's life and caused her to dive deep into personal development and entrepreneurship so she could lead by example amongst her family and friends. How scaling a business with events allows women to step into a bigger leadership role within their communities How events deepen the intimacy you have with your community and can help you reach more dream clients, build loyalty, make easier high-ticket sales Make sure you stay to the end and consider taking Sarah's “Friendly Friday Reminder Challenge.” Sarah's Friendly Friday Reminder This weekend be intentional with your community and/or with your family and friends just like you would in an event setting. Visit WhatHasMyAttention.com Visit Misty LoveYourLifeWithMisty.com Welcome to What Has My Attention. This is John Biethan. In my conversation with Misty Giordano, after talking about Toyota 4Runners and SUVs, I asked Misty “What has your attention?” Her response? Uncertainty and loud noises. Highly sensitive people, which make up about 20% of our population. With a corporate background in HR, she saw that HR professionals were presenting to their employees' fluffy baseline programs and not a more robust well-being strategy wanted and needed by today's workforce. So she created “Love Your Life with Misty” as a consultant for those companies. She is the author of “The Self-Care Survival Guide for Employees.” Misty Giordano is the owner of Love Your Life, LLC, author of The Self-Care Survival Guide for Employees, and creatrix of The How to Human Experience offering speaking engagements, organizational wellbeing consulting and workshops, individual coaching and group programming centered around reconnecting to your human spirit via creating more room for joy and play. While she loves helping everyone, she especially loves being a mentor for women who feel lost in a life they created around what they felt was expected of them, but not what they actually wanted - leaving them feeling burnt out, stressed out, developing mysterious physical illnesses, their mental health suffering and leaving joy, play and fun as a foreign language. Instead of living life, they're managing it day in and day out. Sound like anyone you know? A former HR Manager, Misty has a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University and her holistic health coaching certificate from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, along with the completion of many holistic courses, workshops and intensives along the way. With a self-proclaimed Doctorate in Life, Misty gathers tools and resources that have helped her in years past to heal through life circumstances such as corporate burnout, autoimmune disease and remission, caregiving burnout, divorce and total life transformation to light a path forward for her clients and workshop participants. More than a coach, Misty illuminates an array of options and resources to guide her clients on their next steps in their own healing journey. A never-ending student of life herself, she is always learning, growing, and diving into the next breadcrumbs along her path. Misty proudly lives a digital nomadic lifestyle, and in her spare time, you can find her on any number of exploration adventures with her dog Mugsy in their home city of Chicago, checking out new landscapes, partaking in some kind of experiential travel experience, curled up with a good book or diving into an inspiration-led art project. Misty is also a board member for She's Rising, an organization that provides high school students with a broad perspective of the types of jobs available to them. I first had Shannon Dalton Giordano from Serendipity Social Media on episode 21titled “Your Tone of Voice.” This episode with her was recorded in August 2021 and is titled “Being Brave on Social Media” where Shannon gives humane tips on how to use social media to authentically interact and drive engagement on your social media channels. For this episode when I asked her what she'd like to talk about, she said, “Let's talk a bit about visibility hangovers. I am happy to share what I'm hearing most from clients - how to show up authentically, how to be brave, and how to not feel terrible if you don't receive good engagement (aka visibility hangover).” This is a refreshing approach that I really appreciate, and what makes Shannon a Women in Strong Leadership, and who can show you HOW to create a Social Media Strategy that works! I knew this wasn't the life I wanted. I loved the idea of building things for people. I always have. The engineer in me wanted to use products to make people's lives better. However, I found myself at companies like DoubleClick, Google, DialogTech. All focused on advertising and helping marketers, which wasn't quite hitting my desire to make the lives of people better. I found myself as the VP of Product Management and failing to get pregnant. I was more miserable and overwhelmed than I had ever been before, even when my health was at its worst in my 20s. I knew something had to change. I knew it was time to follow my heart and go after my dream of being a life and leadership coach. During one of the women groups at my company, the speaker we brought in kept mentioning her coach. I took it as a sign that I needed to make the step to get into coaching. And so, I started my journey to becoming a life and leadership coach and changing my life in the process. People now comment on how much more relaxed I am and happy I look. I've found things that I had lost over the years. A renewed connection to the universe and spirit. A renewed appreciation and love of my body. And so much more!” ~ Jamie Martin Contact Jamie Martin Life and Leadership Coach Jamie's website: https://jamiemartincoaching.com/ WHAT has YOUR attention? Come and meet Professor Ulrik Wisloff from Norway. If you have ever wanted to lower your risk form the number one casue of sickness and death amongst adults all over the world, then you must tune in to this episode. Short bio for Professor Wisloff.Ulrik Wisløff is a researcher, a professor and an entrepreneur in the field of exercise physiology, and the Head of the Cardiac Exercise Research Group (55 employees) (ntnu.edu/cerg) at the Dept. of Circulation and Medical Imaging, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and he is also a Honorary Professor at University of Queensland Australia. He was appointed professor in 2008 and quickly built up an international, transdisciplinary and competitive group, as documented by >280 peer-reviewed publications and ~72 000 citations. According to Google Scholar, he figures among the world’s 4 most cited scientists in the broad field of “exercise” and the most cited Exercise Physiologist worldwide. Many of his publications demonstrate his group’s capacity to translate basic experimental research into clinical use in a short timeframe. He has served as PI of several successful national and international collaborations, demonstrating scientific leadership. This led to creation of a calculator to estimate fitness and so predict death in the general population. The calculator is free and available on the web and all app stores. To date 9.5 million users have used the fitness calculator; they also agreed to share their data in research. The American Heart Association now advocates the use of our fitness calculator in clinical practice (Circulation, 2016). Wisløff is also the inventor of the Personalized Activity Intelligence (PAI); a metric that calculates how much physical activity a person needs to be protected against life-style related disease and premature death. The PAI app is free and available in all app stores. Wisløff’s group has translated basic experimental evidence into clinical trials (and patient benefit) within a remarkably short timeframe, with research spanning from molecules to society, and back again. His record of accomplishment demonstrates leadership, capability and innovation required to perform ground-breaking research. Wisløff is also a committed mentor who actively supports next-generation scientists, and have personally supervised 22 postdoctoral fellows and 38 PhD students, who have gone on to have successful careers in both industry and academia. In February 2020 professor Ulrik Wisloffis was awarded the Norwegian Health Assocation's (Nasjonalforeningen for folkehelsen's) Heart Research Award. The price was handed over by the King of Norway.

The study published in Science in 2005, with commentary in Nature Medicine, was ranked as one of the most important papers in the metabolism field at the time. They subsequently showed that high-intensity exercise training was safe and lead to superior improvements in aerobic capacity (Fitness) and cardiac function in heart failure patients (Circulation, 2007).
