Send us a textFor Devin Pancake, trail running represents much more than a post-collegiate athletic pursuit—it's a thoughtful 30-year journey he's just beginning. Fresh off his win at the Antelope Island Buffalo Run 25K and his selection for the 2025 Trail Team Elite, Devin brings refreshing perspective to a sport that often celebrates immediate success. The conversation traces Devin's path from running a 4:00 mile at Utah State University to discovering trail running through iconic films like "Where Dreams Go to Die" and "Found on 49." Unlike many collegiate runners who turn to trails after burnout, Devin maintained a healthy relationship with running throughout college, crediting his coach for emphasizing sustainable development over grinding for immediate results.Devin shares the surreal experience of racing alongside Western States champion Adam Peterman in his first ultramarathon, chatting with the elite runner for miles while pushing his own limits. This story perfectly captures his approach to trail running—competitive but joyful, serious about performance but equally focused on connection and experience. His willingness to return to Speed Goat 50K after a self-described "humbling" first attempt demonstrates his commitment to learning and growth. What makes Devin's perspective particularly valuable is his balanced enthusiasm for everything from fast 25Ks to potential 100-milers and FKT attempts. Supported by the Trail Team Elite and coached by long-trail master Joe McConaughey through the All-In Collective, he's developing the skills to pursue both competitive excellence and soul-enriching adventures. His inspiration comes from thoughtful pioneers like Courtney Dauwalter and Jared Campbell, reflecting his own view of running as "a form of long-life meditation."Follow Devin's journey on Instagram @devinpancake as he tackles upcoming challenges including the Desert Rats 21K, Speed Goat 50K, and potentially Sunapee Scramble Mountain Classic while preparing for his Uinta Highline Trail FKT attempt. His story reminds us that the most fulfilling path in trail running might be one that balances serious competition with genuine appreciation for the mountains and community.
I'm recording live (well, semi-live) while running through mossy, Jurassic Park-like trails outside Portland. Just minutes in, I round a corner and meet a man with a blood-covered hand telling me someone stabbed his dog with a switchblade. So naturally... I kept running.Support our sponsors, janji.com, garagegrowngear.com, and Csinstant.coffeeIn this chaotic on-foot monologue, I dive into the Gorge Waterfalls 100K, which just happened to be the USA Trail Team selection race for the Mountain Ultra Trail World Championships. I talk through the carnage (the race kind), recap the course records smashed by Adam Peterman, Shea Aquilano, and others, and reflect on how trail running might be entering a new competitive era. Then, I join up with Derek Lytle post-race to break it all down: the athletes, the coverage, the waterfalls, and the fact that every race we've filmed has somehow produced course records. Coincidence? Probably. But we're claiming it anyway.Also... there's a very old cat named Blackberry.Chapters00:00 A Run Through the Unexpected03:03 Trail Running Championships and Team USA05:50 Gorge Waterfalls Race Recap09:01 Record-Breaking Performances11:56 Looking Ahead: Future Races and CompetitionsSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comKeywordstrail running, Gorge Waterfalls, USA Trail Team, championships, record-breaking, running safety, outdoor adventures, race recap, competitive running, athlete insights

It's the 200th episode, and we brought so much gratitude to the party! The main topic was reflecting on 5 ways our approach to endurance training/coaching has changed, based on new research and real-world experience. The topics buffet is packed with goodness: extreme-carb fueling during hard efforts, heavier strength work (in moderation), less need for high mileage (but more cross-training), increased steady running, and more double workouts/big threshold sessions. Even more important than the exact changes is the "why" that motivates them, combining research and theory, mixed with a heaping helping of feedback from listeners. It's so much fun to learn from some of the smartest people in endurance sports! And this episode wouldn't be a true celebration unless we filled it up with tons of topics. Other topics: how to improve post-race recovery, why the time after big efforts is a major opportunity for growth (or regression), Allie Ostrander's inspiring journey, the World Cross-Country Championships, giving notice to the achievements of others, how 200 episodes of the podcast has given us more courage, road shoes in trail races, the return of Adam Peterman, a new review study on caffeine, why character matters, why progressive overload is overrated, a listener question on leaving your job, and hot takes. Adam Peterman is the 2022 World Trail Running Champion. Peterman ran cross country and track at the University of Colorado and has won every ultra he's started. His wins include Canyons 100K in April (course record), Chuckanut 50K (course record), JFK 50, and Speedgoat 50K. But most recently, he won his 100-mile debut in stunning fashion at Western States.
This week's guest is Adam Peterman, one of the best ultra marathoners in the country this year whose star is on the rise. Adam comes on fresh off a victory at the 80km trail World Championships and a breakout year that included wins at the Western States 100-mile race, the Canyons 100k, and last fall's JFK 50-miler. Before Adam was a big name at the long distances, he was a steeplechaser at the University of Colorado, where he met his partner, fellow Hoka trail runner Erin Clark. We talked about Adam's journey to the ultra, his training setup in Mizzoula, MT, his plans to run a fast marathon, and much more as we dove into the fascinating world of ultra running. He's definitely going to be someone to watch for fans of the long distances in years to come, and this episode was a great look into one of the sport's newest stars. Without further ado, enjoy the episode! On moving to trails from DI track and field: “After college, I was really burnt out and didn't know if I wanted to race anymore. But moving back to Montana and being able to climb peaks, go mountain biking, and be around a strong group of trail runners got me excited about running again.” On being compared to Jim Walmsley: “A lot of the races [Jim] has chosen to do are the ones that I'm excited about. I look at his times at Western States or in the 100k, and it's insane, but I want to see if I can do it too.” On the growth of trail running: “It's a really exciting time to be a trail runner. Trail is so dynamic and unpredictable; it's fun to tune in and follow. You might have someone who's leading be throwing up 10 miles later – and even come back to win. It's going to continue to grow a lot, and live streaming is going to propel the sport to the next level of popularity.”
We got to have a joyous, wide-ranging interview with the athlete who has quietly had one of the greatest running seasons ever, Adam Peterman! He is so kind, funny, and gracious, and we can't wait for you to get to know him in a deeper way during this episode. Adam's last year of racing has been mind-blowing, with wins at the JFK 50 Miler, Chuckanut 50k, Canyons 100k, Western States 100, and the World Championships. We discuss the training and long-term trajectory that led to his legendary speed and endurance! That means a deep dive into everything from weekly mileage to workouts to strength to training block structure. But our favorite parts of the episode involved his answers to probing questions about kindness, image, and pursuing potential in an uncertain world. Adam is a stellar human whose journey is just getting started. This is the inspirational story of how a Peterman became a PeterGOD! Adam Peterman is the 2022 Western States Champion on the men's side. This was actually his debut 100 mile race! This hasn't happened since the 1980s. Adam Peterman took the ultra running world by storm when he became the new champion of the legendary Western States 100 race this past June, adding to his already impressive resume in the running world. Having won every single ultra he's participated in, HOKA athlete Adam Peterman has solidified himself as one of the best athletes in the ultra running sport to date. Not only did he win Western States (which was his first 100 miler ever to make things even more impressive), he also won the Canyons 100k, the JFK 50 miler, and the Speedgoat 50k by breaking Jim Walmsley's seemingly unreachable course record. All back-to-back-to-back. The dude is on such a hot streak! In this episode, I joined Adam in his hometown of Missolua, Montana where he recapped his entire Western States experience, along with his biggest takeaways of what led to his success during his epic win. Adam covers it all in this episode: from incredible race stories at Western, to training tips and strategies, to mindset and the mental game; it's all in this episode. And it's definitely my favorite episode that we've done to date. This is also Adam's second appearance on the Everyday Ultra podcast - so if you're interested in learning more about his background and training philosophy, feel free to tune in to the episode we did with him earlier in the year! Huge thank you to Adam Peterman for making this interview happen! He is one of the kindest dudes I've met in the ultra community and such an awesome friend. Lindsay Dakota is a Co-Founder of Naked Sports Innovations. You're probably familiar with their running bands, but maybe not as familiar with their running vests or their new trail racing shoe. Maybe you also also noticed athletes like Adam Peterman and Camille Herron crossing the finish line of this year's Western States 100 using their gear. Regardless, if you're a long-time listener of Singletrack, you know our first love on this show is chatting with the entrepreneurs building on top of and around the world of trail and ultra running and we return to those roots in this episode.Lindsay and I talk about what it's like running a gear company in our sport, the opportunities he saw to innovate on existing trail running gear, the outside influences he brings to our world, general commentary on building and marketing a vision from 0 to 1, and all sorts of stuff around Naked's current and future lines of products. We took some hardcore grass naps before talking about 13 things we learned at the Western States 100 Miler! That includes the booming media coverage, Adam Peterman becoming a PeterGOD, theories for why the times are so fast, and much more. Plus we do some deeper dives into the exciting world of mid-event cooling techniques (and how we think that will drive performance changes even in temperate races), how speed is so important for long races, the exciting and evolving landscape of running, and the less exciting prospect of 12-inch probes. It'll make sense soon. For a weekly bonus episode, make sure you're subscribed to our Patreon. We love you all! WOOHOO! One of the toughest accomplishments to achieve in ultrarunning is securing a Golden Ticket spot to Western States 100 by placing in the top 2 of the Canyons 100K race. And today's guest recently accomplished that feat, even though the race was only his first 100K ever! Adam Peterman is a HOKA athlete who has been taking the ultrarunning world by storm over the last few years in his early career. He won the JFK 50 miler in 2021, nearly breaking a seemingly unreachable course record. And in this year, he took first place at the Canyons 100K race to secure his spot at Western States 100, where he will no doubt be a top contender to look out for in an already stacked field. And in this episode, we dive into Adam's approach to training and preparation for big races, how he tackles negative thoughts during the middle of a race or on training runs, and what he's focusing on going into Western States 100. Erin and Adam sat down with co-hosts Jessica and Greg for a post race interview after Canyons 100k presented by UTMB after we had spoken to them right before the race live at the Auburn Aid Station.
