Julio Caezar is back with a set that starts hot and slowly opens up. Episode 136 leans into Latin house and Afro grooves early, then eases into deeper, melodic moments as the hour unfolds. It's confident, emotional, and a little vulnerable in the best way. This one isn't just about keeping the energy up, it's about letting the music say what doesn't always come out in words. Alaina Morgan's Atlantic Crescent: Building Geographies of Black and Muslim Liberation in the African Diaspora (UNC Press, 2025) introduces the conceptual framework of the “Atlantic Crescent” to capture the overlapping encounters between Black, Afro-Caribbean, and South Asian Muslims in the United States and the Caribbean. Using rich archival material, such as the Nation of Islam's Muhammad Speaks, we learn about 20th century Black Muslim movements such as the Moorish Science Temple and the Nation of Islam as they encounter and engage with South Asian Muslim communities, like the Ahmadiyya movement in the US, as their discourses of global anti-imperial and decolonial struggles shaped or overlapped with each other. The second half of the book takes us to Bermuda to trace the translation of these Black Muslim liberation movements into the Caribbean. By focusing on the flow and encounters of these overlapping diasporas, we learn how anti-imperial and ant-colonial discourses were inhabited by varied South Asian, Black, and Afro-Caribbean diasporic communities, and how organizing, be it around labour and education, framed Islam through Black and Afro-diasporic liberatory registers. Morgan's sharp analysis of these rich diasporic flows charts new imagined geographies of freedom struggles and resistance. This study will be of interest to scholars who think and write on Islam in the global west and the Caribbean, diaspora studies, anti-colonial and anti-imperial Muslim organizing and much more. On today's show, host Dana Pellebon is joined by Dr. Jonathan Mathias Lassiter, author of the new book, How I Know White People are Crazy and Other Stories: Notes from a Frustrated Black Psychologist. Dr. Lassiter works in private psychotherapy practice and provides culturally relevant care for marginalized professionals. He is part of the mere 1% of Black male psychologists in the country. His memoir makes the case for better cultural representation in the therapy field and defines the theory of the “whiteness mindset.”  Dr. Lassiter says that he's always been curious about why people do the things they do, and this led him to pursue a career in education followed by a psychotherapy practice. He describes his upbringing and the isolation and microaggressions he experienced in his graduate studies and clinical settings. He noticed that though the clinics he worked in were serving Black and Latinx clients, the vast majority of the therapists were white. And while working in the VA hospital in Indianapolis, he was the only Black male therapist. At that time, he read Toni Morrison's Playing in the Dark: Whiteness in the Literary Imagination and went on to write a corollary essay, “Whiteness in the Psychological Imagination,” that became the seed of his current book.  In How I Know White People are Crazy and Other Stories, Dr. Lassiter uses diagnostic criteria to define “the whiteness mindset” as a way of thinking and being that values materialism, competition, and individualism, which all promote oppression. It's a “distress producing phenomena” that hurts everyone and is making white people sick, he says. They also discuss other concepts in psychology, like “post traumatic slave syndrome” and “black fatigue,” and how Christianity becomes a weapon, especially when it comes to sexuality. Dr. Lassiter says he wants marginalized people, the global majority, to understand that they're not the problem. His future work will focus on the Afro-centric and Indigenous psychologies as pathways to better, more healthy futures. Dr. Jonathan Mathias Lassiter is a licensed clinical psychologist in New York City specializing in culturally informed mental health care for Black, POC, and LGBTQ+ individuals and couples. With a passion to use his Ph.D.for the culture, he serves as a therapist, scientist, educator, author, mental health columnist, on-air mental health expert, and international public speaker. Dr. Lassiter has appeared in such outlets as NBC, PBS, Forbes, Huff Post, Radio NewZealand, SiriusXM, iHeart Radio, and more. Follow Dr. Lassiter on all social media platforms at @lassiterhealth. Directed by Mukendi, the official music video on @MahmudBinAsrafVEVO has rapidly amassed over 800,000–1 million views, with strong engagement including thousands of likes and heartfelt comments praising its soul-stirring impact that "hits the soul and the body."The track exploded organically, trending #1 in Morocco, #4 in UAE and Italy, and charting in 17+ countries on YouTube for intense short runs. Boosted by TikTok, Shorts, and third-party remixes reaching millions, it resonates deeply in North Africa, the Middle East, and African diaspora communities amid the 2026 Afrobeat/Afro Soul wave.Despite no mainstream Western chart entries or certifications, Mahmud bin Asraf's version demonstrates massive cultural resonance over commercial metrics, positioning him as a rising niche talent with breakout potential in MENA and African markets.Analytic Dreamz breaks down the song's origins, viral trajectory, regional dominance, audience reactions, and why this reimagining is captivating global listeners in this in-depth segment.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Send us a textWhat if jazz didn't just borrow from culture but stood inside it, breathing in real stories and rhythms from across the Sahara? We sit down with The Salako—musician, festival founder, and fearless improviser—to map the living space between Yoruba folk, Afro jazz, and the kind of stage magic that turns a crowd into an instrument. We talk about identity and clarity—why he embraced “The Salako” to guide listeners to the right artist—and then get into the core of his craft. He shares how Bobby McFerrin's approach unlocked a mindset of freedom: starting from a spark, building songs with the room, and letting rhythm, audience voices, and raw texture find their form. That same spirit led him to create the Abuja International Afro Jazz Festival, a truly global platform where artists bring their culture into jazz, not the other way around. From South African mentors to Norwegian partners and a Senegalese groove, the festival gives Abuja a front-row seat to the world's musical dialects. We challenge assumptions about attention spans and “easy music,” and discuss why depth still wins when presented with honesty. The Salako writes long-form pieces, then crafts radio edits for entry points, trusting listeners to seek the full journey. That faith pays off: Gen Z showed up and stayed to the last note at the most recent festival. He also teases Pirates of the Sahara, dropping alongside his April tour, with themes that look beyond love to real issues—discipline, social strain, traffic impatience—carried by bold meters, brass, and storytelling arcs. A highlight, Dagunro, reframes a Yoruba warning tale as a cinematic, 7/8 surge that feels both ancient and new.Underneath it all sits a generous belief: everyone is musical. The Salako loves turning audiences into choirs because creativity isn't a niche—it's human. If you're curious about African jazz, cultural storytelling, improvisation, and how legacy-minded work can still thrill a modern crowd, this conversation is your map. Listen, subscribe, and share with a friend who needs a fresh spark in their playlist. The Afro is one of the most iconic hairstyles of the last century. And one of its main ingredients was a hair product – Afro Sheen. But Afro Sheen did so much more than make Black afros shine. It was the money behind the television show Soul Train, it helped fuel the civil rights movement – all because of an entrepreneur named George Johnson. For decades, Joan and George Johnson owned and ran Johnson Products Company, a Black hair care company out of Chicago. Their intimate understanding of what Black people wanted and needed – for their hair and for their lives –  helped grow the Black middle class and became an engine for Black culture and power. They helped turn the Black haircare industry into what is now a multi-billion-dollar industry. But although they helped create this industry, they no longer have a part in it. Today on the show – the story of the rise and fall of Johnson Products. We're gonna tell you this story in three hairstyles. The conk, the afro… and the jheri curl. Related episodes:This Ad's For You'Soul Train' and the business of Black joyFashion Fair's makeoverPre-order the Planet Money book and get a free gift. / Subscribe to Planet Money+Listen free: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, the NPR app or anywhere you get podcasts.Facebook / Instagram / TikTok / Our weekly Newsletter. This episode of Planet Money was hosted by Sonari Glinton and Erika Beras.

If overwhelm has become your constant companion - the thing you wake up with, carry through your day, and fall asleep thinking about - your well-being is trying to tell you something. In this episode, we're unpacking why happiness can feel so far away when stress keeps running the show, and how you can manage what's on your plate without sacrificing yourself in the process. If you're longing to feel happier, love yourself more deeply, and finally declutter the parts of your life that feel too heavy, you are absolutely in the right place! My guest, author and Afro-minimalist Christine Platt (Less Is Liberation: Finding Freedom From a Life of Overwhelm), shares how her “normal” busy life quietly turned into a health crisis, and how she began seeing overwhelm as her body's way of saying, Hey, one of your wells is empty. We talk about the five foundations of wellness (your “personal wells”), the emotional labor and mental load so many women carry, and how learning to declutter your stuff, your schedule, and your beliefs can help you manage stress more wisely and reconnect with a sense of happiness in your daily life. We also get into the messy real-world pieces: overwhelm by circumstance (divorce, money, kids, career), people-pleasing, the guilt around saying no, and why so many of us overbuy and hang onto clutter “just in case.” As you listen, notice: Which of your wells has been running low? What are you still trying to prove by doing so much? And what would “less” need to look like for your life to feel more like your life again? Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Constant Overwhelm and Stress: What Your Body Is Trying to Tell You 03:03 Chronic Overwhelm and Hypertension: When Stress Becomes a Health Crisis 05:51 Five Foundations of Wellness: The “Personal Wells” Framework 09:45 Emotional Labor and Mental Load: Why Women Feel So Overwhelmed 12:30 Minimalism as Liberation: Living With Less to Reduce Overwhelm 16:06 Time Scarcity and Productivity: Limiting Beliefs That Keep You Overwhelmed 18:29 Messengers and Limiting Beliefs: Redefining “Selfish” Self-Care 25:32 Overwhelmed by Circumstance: Divorce, Scarcity, and Minimalism by Necessity 32:26 Psychology of Ownership: Why We Overbuy, Hoard, and Accumulate Clutter 42:51 Inner Work Before Decluttering: Healing People-Pleasing and Attachment to Stuff 48:47 Filling Your Wells: Daily Practices for Sustainable Wellness and Well-Being If you're living in that constant state of overwhelm, please know you don't have to sort this out on your own. At Growing Self, you can talk with someone about what's really happening - the stress, the burnout, the clutter on the outside and the inside - and get matched with a therapist or coach who truly understands what you're carrying. Schedule a consultation today! You deserve a life that feels lighter and more intentional, where you can manage stress wisely, feel happier in your day-to-day reality, and genuinely love yourself in how you care for your time, your space, and your emotional well-being.

An Afro-futurist universe with funk and lots of theater (and a big nod to Prince), a potent, political gut punch from a beloved actor and comedian, era-defining protest anthems and more.  Note: This is a recurring series in celebration of All Songs Considered's 25th anniversary. A shorter version of this episode ran earlier in the year.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
