In this episode, I explore the Buddhist teaching of aimlessness, one of the Three Doors of Liberation, through personal reflection and the lens of my son's journey into adulthood. What if life doesn't need a fixed purpose to be meaningful? Drawing on insights from Buddhism, Alan Watts, and everyday life—including paragliding, parenting, and playing music—I consider what it means to live fully when we stop racing toward a destination. Aimlessness isn't about giving up; it's about letting go of the pressure to always be somewhere else, and discovering the joy of being right here, right now. Life, like dancing or listening to music, might not be about getting to the end—it might just be about the experience itself. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Next Reel by The Next Reel Film Podcasts

“I don't have anything. Never did have anything. Never will have anything.”The Tale of Barbara Loden's Unsung MasterpieceIn the late 1960s, actress Barbara Loden came across a newspaper article about a woman on trial for bank robbery who thanked the judge for her sentence. Perplexed by what could drive a woman to such a point, Loden crafted a story that would become her sole feature film, Wanda. Despite being married to acclaimed director Elia Kazan, Loden struggled to get the film made, eventually scraping together a meager budget and shooting on 16mm. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the One-and-Done series with a conversation about Wanda.A Portrait of Aimlessness and Apathy in Rural AmericaOn the surface, Wanda may seem like a bleak and meandering character study, but it's precisely those qualities that make it such a fascinating film. We dive into Loden's raw, cinema verité-style approach to storytelling, which eschews traditional Hollywood structure in favor of a more naturalistic portrayal of its titular character's directionless existence. From her passive acceptance of a divorce that leaves her children in the care of their father to her listless drift into a life of crime with a small-time thief, Wanda's journey is one of quiet desperation and longing for purpose.Throughout our discussion, we grapple with the film's deliberate pacing, sparse cinematography, and lack of a traditional character arc. While Pete finds the film's unrelenting bleakness and Wanda's apparent lack of agency challenging, Andy argues that the film's power lies in its unflinching portrayal of a marginalized woman's experience.Wanda may not be an easy watch, but it remains a powerful and uncompromising portrait of a woman adrift in a world that offers her little in the way of hope or purpose. Barbara Loden's singular vision and commitment to telling an untold story make this a film that demands to be seen and discussed. Despite our differing reactions to the film, we both agree that Wanda is a work of undeniable importance and a testament to Loden's talent as a filmmaker. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Hey Friend!   It's back-to-school season, which means whether we have kids or not, our attention turns to children. Sadly, we look around our culture and see throngs of kids who aren't flourishing, they're floundering.  Anxiety. Depression. Loneliness. Aimlessness.    We don't want the children we know to struggle like this.    So, what can we do?    How can we help the kids we know (our kids and other kids, too!) become healthy, happy, caring, Christ-like adults?    The answer (or at least a good part of the answer) is found in one simple verse that describes Jesus' own growth as a child.    On today's episode I discuss how healthy human beings grow in four key areas, just like Jesus did: “And Jesus grew in wisdom, stature, favor with God, and favor with man.” (Luke 2:52)    Join me as we explore how to be intentional in helping kids develop mentally, physically, spiritually, and socially.    Whether you're a parent, grandparent, teacher, or simply someone who loves kids, you'll find valuable takeaways to help you navigate the complexities of today's world with intentionality and faith.   Don't miss a single episode. Julie reflects on the profound impact of death, grief, and the loss of purpose. Drawing from personal experiences, particularly the death of their mother in 2018, she shares her journey of navigating grief and the subsequent loss of direction, paying particular attention to the importance of discussing death and the inevitability of losing loved ones, urging listeners to consider their purpose beyond familial connections.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Death and grief are inevitable parts of life, and it is important to acknowledge and talk about them. We the need to have conversations about death and prepare ourselves for the loss of loved ones. Having a sense of purpose is crucial for navigating through grief and difficult times. There is value to be found in finding a purpose that is greater than oneself and provides a sense of direction and meaning. Aimlessness and anxiety are interconnected. When one is aimless and unsure of which direction to go, it creates inner anxiety. This anxiety can lead to feelings of depression, stress, and a lack of positive emotions. Having a goal or purpose produces positive emotions and rewards. When one has a clear goal and takes steps towards achieving it, the brain releases dopamine, which creates positive emotions and strengthens the neural circuits associated with motivation and progress. BEST MOMENTS "Grief is a thing that we suffer from. Grief is an emotion. It will affect all of us very differently, of course it will, because we are all unique beings."  "So what happened? The relationship broke down. So not only did I lose mum, I also lost the purpose that I had with my partner. So all of a sudden, I had no future."  "Your brain is set up to produce positive emotion. And if you're aimless and you haven't got the goal, what are you going to reward yourself with? So the emotion of positivity decreases because you've got no goal."  "Find a purpose that is greater than yourself. It is greater than the person you are. It is greater than your partner, greater than your child, greater than your parent. Find a purpose that is bigger than all of those things combined." Express to yourself why this is important Time for you to get out and start exploring Try stuff Volunteer Work on your 4 pillars News 6 weeks till episode 200 Monday Hour One Coaching On Air relaxedmale.com/coachingtryouts @podbeancom In this episode, we delve into the topic of aimlessness and explore ways to overcome it. Our goal is to assist men in letting go of the "nice guy" mentality and living life on their own terms. We start by highlighting the importance of having a sense of purpose and how challenging it can be to navigate through daily life without direction. To emphasize this point, we share a humorous anecdote about a quintessential dad, reminding us to embrace who we are and find humor in life's moments. Returning to our main topic of aimlessness, we delve into the concept and its negative consequences. While some may view aimlessness as liberating, it often leads to inefficiency and a lack of accomplishment. We discuss Parkinson's Law, which states that without specific goals and timeframes, projects tend to take longer than necessary to complete. Reflecting on personal experiences, we acknowledge how aimlessness can result in wasted time and a lack of fulfillment. This realization leads us to encourage listeners to discover their purpose and direction in life, thereby avoiding the aimless drift. We believe that finding one's purpose earlier in life, particularly between the ages of 25 and 30, allows for greater personal growth and success. Our own purpose is to help individuals overcome victim mentality and live with intention. Specifically, we aim to assist men in embracing their role and responsibilities in society. To break free from aimlessness, we pose the question of how to find one's rudder and take control of life's direction. We stress the significance of having a sense of purpose and the gradual acceptance of traditional gender roles as society recognizes the value they bring. We discuss the challenges faced by both stay-at-home parents and individuals working long hours and neglecting other aspects of their lives. Stressing the importance of being intentional and present, we offer advice on dating properly and finding fulfillment in spending time with children. We also touch on the cycle of aimlessness and how to escape it by exploring interests and setting daily and long-term goals. We encourage individuals to work on all four pillars of The Relaxed Male - mind , body , soul , and community - through activities like reading, exercising, trying new things, and volunteering. Experimentation is key, as it allows us to discover new passions and keep life exciting. While it's fine to make mistakes along the way, these experiences become stories that attract others to us. Ultimately, our soul shines when we do what we're meant to do, and we need to demonstrate our purpose rather than simply talk about it. To maintain focus and inspiration, it's essential to understand the "why" behind our goals and purpose. This understanding will motivate us and surpass the drive for pleasure, avoidance of pain, and efficiency. Without a clear "why," we may become lost in trivial matters. We encourage listeners to find their "why," set short goals aligned with their objectives, and explore and volunteer to truly discover themselves. Finally, we mention that we have six more episodes until episode 200 and share exciting news about offering coaching sessions exclusively for men. Interested individuals can sign up on relaxmail.com/coachingtryouts to receive guidance and support in overcoming barriers and obstacles in their lives. We clarify that this is coaching rather than therapy and that we're here to assist with issues such as divorce, motivation, and more. Concluding the episode, we mention a podcast platform called podbean.com that we've been enjoying and encourage listeners to share the episode with others who may benefit from it. In the Tao Te Ching and the Zhuangzi there is no consideration of goals, but rather a focus on aimlessness as a method for creating healthy and sane individuals. Having goals, according to Taoism, is a blind alley that can lead to all sorts of psychological problems and social unrest. In this episode of Ask Jason, I will answer a question about whether or not a goal oriented focus can fit into the art of wu-wei (effortless living/non-doing/non-interference) and whether or not we should have a goal or goals in life and on the spiritual path. Not only did he lack an intimate relationship with his dad because of it, but Paul was driven to drink and do drugs himself as a young kid. He became a rebel amongst his friends and seemed to cause damage wherever he went. When he moved away to Houston, he heard the gospel several times, but it didnt land on him. He met and married Paula and they moved home where they took care of his parents in their final years. The loss of Pauls mom and dad began a chain of losses that took a toll on their marriage. They had a baby to try and save things, but Paul couldnt get over his drug use. After an invitation to attend church with a colleague, Paul heard the gospel and was saved. His wife soon followed. He went onto become a pastor and missionary.

Aim is intimately connected to meaning. Too often we feel our lives are aimless. The Christian, however, can connect to a transcendent aim. Paul teaches us in 2 Corinthians 5:9 that in all things we ought to aim to please Jesus. We please God as we are conformed to the image of Christ, to enjoy God, love others, and subdue sin.Let this message help set the course for a new year and a new decade!

It should be read to firstly identify what is driving your own behaviour, secondly to allow you to start to make some positive changes to your behaviour, then thirdly to begin to recognise what other people are doing and why they might be doing it.   In this episode, we're covering four of the laws:  - Chapter 6: Elevate Your Perspective (The Law of Shortsightedness)  - Chapter 8: Change Your Circumstances by Changing Your Attitude (The Law of Self-Sabotage)  - Chapter 2: Transform Self-Love into Empathy (The Law of Narcissism)  - Chapter 13: Advance with a Sense of Purpose (The Law of Aimlessness)   Get your 7 day free trial with Blinkist: Www.blinkist.com/whatyouwilllearn   Check out top 50: www.whatyouwilllearn.com Grab a copy of the book here: https://www.bookdepository.com/Laws-Human-Nature-Robert-Greene/9781781259191/?a_aid=adamsbooks

Robert Greene is back after a six-year hiatus with his latest book, The Laws of Human Nature. This is Greene's sixth bestseller, two of which I've reviewed here on the blog before. Both The 48 Laws of Power and Mastery should be on your reading list if you haven't read them. Greene hasn't disappointed this time around either. The Laws of Human Nature is the best book I read in 2018 and one of the best books I've read ever. The book is a perennial seller and in typical Greene style it contains social psychological lessons from human history you can use as a point of reference time and again. According to Greene, The Laws of Human Nature was around five years in the making. Although this could be him giving a nod to Law 16 in The 48 Laws of Power to "use absence to increase respect and honour." That said, with 624 pages, the book is dense and his most comprehensive one to date. Compared with Mastery (352 pages) and The 48 Laws (480 pages), both of which are not pamphlets themselves, The Laws of Human Nature is a long read. If you're interested in social psychology and understanding how thoughts and emotions control human behaviour you'll find it fascinating. Kudos to Greene on how much extensive and thorough research has gone into writing the book. I read the entire thing once and have gone back to re-read a few chapters again. I also bought the audiobook version to listen while I'm on the move. The Laws of Human Nature is one of those books you have to read multiple times to get a comprehensive understanding of all the laws included in it. What are Greene's Laws of Human nature, exactly? The Laws of Human Nature are the collection of forces that make us think, act and react the way we do. These forces include the particular wiring of our brains, the configuration of our nervous system, the way we process our emotions and moods, and the impact our upbringing and the groups we associate with have on us. All of which have developed and emerged over the course of the five million years in the evolution of our species. Our concept of free will is a myth and often what we say is not what we mean. The book goes well beyond the surface level of appearances and into deep psychological territory. Greene draws on the vast literature of psychology from the last 100 years from the likes of Freud, Yung, Klein, Kahneman, Nietzsche, Aronson and many others. He ties these psychological concepts in with historical figures and events including the likes of Coco Chanel, Lyndon Johnson, Napoleon, Martin Luther King Jr and many others. Greene has identified 18 laws of human nature, all of which are categorised into an individual chapter. He makes the point upfront that once you have an understanding of the laws of human nature you can address them dispassionately. Indeed, the first chapter is The Law of Irrationality with the key takeaway message being to understand how to be rational so it's to your advantage. Greene says by distancing yourself when someone acts against you, the situation can be examined without emotion to determine the deep unconscious motive behind it. As Schopenhauer who is quoted in the book noted. "If you come across any special trait of meanness or stupidity, you must be careful not to let it annoy or distress you but to look upon it merely as an addition to your knowledge. A new fact to be considered in studying the character of humanity. Your attitude towards it will be that of the mineralogist who stumbles across a very characteristic specimen of a mineral." Arthur Schopenhauer There are 18 chapters in total, each one outlining an individual law of human nature to help you become aware of each one in both yourself and in others. Greene's 18 laws of human nature are: IrrationalityNarcissismRoleplayingCompulsive behaviourCovetousness Shortsightedness Defensiveness Self-sabotage RepressionEnvy Grandiosity Gender rigidity Aimlessness ...

This week, take a peek at a man who had everything a person could want, and couldn't help but throw it away as aggressively as humanly possible. He went from being a first round NFL draft pick, and playing in a super bowl, to being a target of a major FBI drug probe, wandering the streets, setting fires, stealing from his own mother to buy crack, robbing stores that wouldn't even hire him to work the cash register, and generally being an untrustworthy menace to society. It's a winding ride through the downfall of a person with all the unfulfilled potential in the world, and ending in one of the saddest outcomes we've covered. Give your all while you can. "I want to know that on my last day when they lay me down in my grave, I am not taking my best work to the grave with me."-Todd Henry The Cheat Sheet: The best possible education experience you can have. (10:30) Should anyone go to college? (20:50) The key to overcoming America's economic malaise revealed. (27:00) Why it's never too late to enter the marketplace. (29:50) What's one of the biggest issues people have, according to Todd? (32:10) The most valuable land in the world is where? (37:30) And so much more... If you chose to live today by the motto "die empty" what would you do differently? What projects would you start, what relationships would you enrich and which would you let go of? These two words became the motto for this episode's guest few years ago and they had such an impact that he decided to write a book on the topic. Todd Henry, author of Die Empty, joins us to talk about the value of going to college or not going, the deadly sins of mediocrity, how to avoid becoming mediocre or get yourself out of that rut if you're already in it...and so much more on the 331st episode of The Art of Charm. More About This Show: Todd Henry is the best-selling author behind such notable books as The Accidental Creative and Die Empty. He's also the man behind The Accidental Creative podcast and a consultant who helps companies create more effectively. He calls himself "an arms dealer for the creative revolution"! His "arms dealings" originally stem from the assistance he offered his friends, they were people who worked in large companies but often struggled with how to create effectively in their jobs. He called them Accidental Creatives because they didn't see themselves as creative types but they were still working their way through the creative process. The name stuck and later became the title of his first book. But Todd was most strongly influenced by two words he later stumbled upon, die empty. He felt these words had meaning not just for him, but for everyone. They were the keys to living a full, rich life and shaking off the dulling effects of mediocrity. He published a book called Die Empty and talks at length in this episode about how to do so. He discusses the 7 deadly sins of mediocrity in that book and in this episode we hone in on the first: aimlessness. He says mediocrity is combined from two other root words: medius and ocris. Medius meaning middle and ocris meaning rugged mountain; mediocre means to stop halfway up the rugged mountain. Many people do this by becoming comfortable where they are and never moving beyond that position, never challenging themselves further. Aimlessness is one of the reasons, one of the deadly sins that causes this. Aimlessness happens when someone loses sight of their true passion and connection to their passion project, they get stuck as a result. Todd says we can avoid this the same way he does: by following EMPTY which stands for Ethic Mission People Tasks You. Here's a breakdown of what each of those words in empty stand for: Ethic means asking yourself how do I engage in work every day? What do I bring to my work on a daily basis? Mission means applying your productive passion and understanding the thing you're really trying to do. It's the ultimate outcome you're committed to. People relates to the people in your life you have to interact with. how can you build relationships into your life that are stimulating, challenging and cause me to see the world in new ways? Tasks are the tasks if you accomplish them this week they would make it successful in your mind. You represents yourself and how you care for yourself. What self-care do you make a priority in your life? And are you developing discipline for intentional growth for yourself? And finally Todd gives us some specific ways we can implement his advice immediately. The first thing he suggests is to form of circle of 5-7 people you meet with once a month. The goal of your group is to get together and talk about work you're doing, your aspirations, what you're planning to do. Todd offers more actionable advice along with his thoughts on the pros and cons of college, how he's educating his children and tons more! It was a pleasure to have Todd on the show, I want to thank him for joining us and to thank you for being here too. Enjoy the episode and we'll see you next time. THANKS TODD! October 16, 2013. 111-minute dharma talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh from Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, California during the 2013 Nourishing Great Togetherness teaching tour. This is the fourth and final dharma talk for the 6-day retreat with the theme Finding Our True Home. A lesson for the children for when they return to school and how to deal with aggression without being angry or violent. If we do that, then we win. After about 10-minutes we continue with just the adults. We begin with a few unanswered questions from the previous session of questions and answers: I can be mindful of my breath when I sitting or walking but how do I keep mindful of my breath when speaking? Political discourse is deeply toxic and intolerant; how do we consume without the negativity? How can we still be engaged? Please talk to us about grief.  What can you share with teachers and youth so they can walk away and take care of their fears and stress? Can there be peace without war? The topic of our talk today is birth and death. These two happen at the same time; even a scientist can see this through the continuous birth and death of the cells of our body. Where there is death, there is birth. In our tradition, we speak of two kinds of truth: conventional truth and ultimate truth. The Five Mindfulness Trainings represent the path of transformation and healing. A path of happiness. The Noble Path has eight elements. The first is Right View. It is the insight that transcends all discrimination. If you think war and peace as two deprecate entities, that is not right view. There is Interbeing. There are four pairs of opposites that can represent all kinds of opposites. Birth and death Being and nonbeing Coming and going Sameness and otherness Right view transcends all these opposites. From there, you can practice Right Thinking, Right Speech, Right Action, Right livelihood, Right Diligence, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration. We continue now with the exercises of mindful breathing where we left off in a prior dharma talk. With the ninth through twelfth exercise, we come to the realm of the mind. The last four (13-16) are about the objects of mind with impermanence, non-craving, nirvana, and letting go. We resume the teaching on the four pairs of opposites fooled by the Three Doors of Liberation. Emptiness. Signlessness. Aimlessness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1hQ2d_RcHM&feature=share

May 26, 2013. 86-minute dharma talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh from Hong Kong. The sangha is on the spring Asian Tour and this talk is given in English with consecutive translation into Chinese. The theme of the retreat is Happiness is the Way. How do we connect with the Buddha? How do we bow to the Buddha? Emptiness. Right View is the ultimate aim of practice. To gain insight into Interbeing and emptiness. What is emptiness? How does this help us remove anger and discrimination? Concentration allows us to discover this insight. These three practices (samadhi) to Right View are available in all Buddhist traditions. Emptiness. Signlessness. Aimlessness. These are the Three Doors of Liberation. Mindfulness. Concentration. Insight. A good practitioner can generate these three kinds of energy. If we practice, we can produce Right Thinking and the Noble Eightfold Path. We are free of the notions of being and non-being. We hear the story of Anapindika when he was dying and how Sariputra helped him understand no birth and no death. http://youtu.be/qXObHuighQ8

October 25, 2012. 105-minute dharma talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh from Lower Hamlet at Plum Village. The sangha is enjoying the Autumn Retreat and this is a Day of Mindfulness. Last week we learned about the Four Kinds of Nutriments and having to do with the Fifth Mindfulness Training. Power. Some people think if they have power, they will be happy. It takes a great deal of understanding. The mind of love; of enlightenment. Bodhicitta. This comes from the practice of mindfulness and concentration. Understanding your own suffering helps you understand the suffering of others around you. I'm the family and in the nation. Love and understanding. Understanding is the foundation of love. The mind left uncultivated will bring lots of suffering. We need a spiritual dimension in our daily life. This is our practice. Bodhicitta is a tremendous source of energy. Mental formations. There are mental formations that make us suffer, but they can be transformed. Samadhi. Maintaining awareness. Meditation on impermance. We have to keep this alive in us. Treasure the moments we have. August 16, 2012. 91-minute dharma talk given in English, with consecutive translation into Dutch (though the Dutch is muted in this recording), with Thich Nhat Hanh. This is the fifth (and final) Dharma talk offered by Thay in the Dutch Retreat on the theme Body and Mind Are One at the European Institute of Applied Buddhism in Waldbröl, Germany. Mindfulness is always mindfulness of something. An object. The first object of mindfulness is our body. Our body includes our in-breath and out-breath. There is a sutra on the contemplation of the body. The second object of our mindfulness is our feelings. Pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral feelings. The third object is our mind. It is comprised of mental formations. The fourth is the objects of our mind. After a brief review of the first 8 exercises on the Full Awareness of Mindful Breathing, Thay moves ahead with the remaining exercises. Also, a teaching on impermanence, non-self, and Interbeing. Contemplating a cloud. The three concentrations. Emptiness. Aimlessness. Signlessness. Also known as the Three Doors of Liberation. Dwelling happily in the present moment.

Dear Virtual Study Group We apologize for the delay in posting.  We are only able to upload 250 MB a month so when we exceed our limit we have to wait a bit.  We hope you will understand as the podcast is run on donations and volunteer time. Here is Verse 9: Emptiness, signlessness, and aimlessness liberate me from suffering, so that in my daily practice I am not caught in mere intellectual understanding. Our Sister reminds us that we can learn to let go, that we already have everything we need inside of us.  We can stop running, stop aiming, and make use of what we already have. A good reflection is to look at our life right now and find out what is making us feel not free.   This beautiful sharing is closed with the deep insight, "Thank you for allowing myself to see myself more."  Enjoy

You are a column of wax. Your purpose began as a spark, a flicker easily ignored. But you didn't ignore it. You turned to face it and your head caught fire. Grace Hansen admonishes, “Don't be afraid your life will end; be afraid it will never begin.” In other words, be afraid you will never catch fire. Lethargy. Apathy. Malaise. Aimlessness. Depression: Five different words for the absence of a flame. What is it that burns in your soul and shines through your eyes? Did you know that humans would rather be angry than bored? Anger is an ugly flame, but it feels better than no flame at all. This is why people who have no creative vision spend so much time being angry. Anger gives them purpose. Try not to walk in their shadow. Jorge Luis Borges, consumed by the tiger of time, is gone. But when he walked among us he looked directly into the lens of life's camera and said, “Time is the substance of which I am made. Time is a river that sweeps me along, but I am the river; it is a tiger that tears me apart, but I am the tiger; it is a fire that consumes me, but I am the fire. The world, unfortunately, is real; I, unfortunately, am Borges.” Time is the fire, the animator of us all. You step into it at birth. You step out of it at death and grow cold, a column of wax once more. Your candle is spent. What did it light? You've heard me say it many times… I repeat it again today, not because I can think of nothing else to say, but because it's vitally important to your happiness: “Lives, like money, are spent. What are you buying with yours?” Roy H. Williams
