Watch the best scene reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_gq-ueaUbU When the paths of the 11th Pennsylvania Civil War regiment and an American Staffordshire Terrier pup intertwine, the men of the 11th's lives are changed in ways they never could've predicted. Get to know the writer: What is your screenplay about? It is about a dog named Sallie who is the mascot of the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment of the Civil War. We follow her throughout the entire war and see the war through her eyes as she forms bonds and relationships with the men of the 11th. It is also based on a true story. What genres does your screenplay fall under? Drama, family and history. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie? This screenplay should be made into a film because it shows war from a unique perspective that not many others see very often, the point of view from a dog. It also demonstrates why dogs are man's best friend, how they are willing to be there for us during our darkest moments. He has been called a dog whisperer. The familiar adage, dogs are a man's best friend, rings true for over half a million households across the United States. According to the Forbes Advisor, 66% of Americans own pets, totaling nearly 89.6 million homes. Of that 89.6 million, 65.1 million are dog owners. (Information based on Pet Ownership Statistics 2024) The numbers mentioned are based on registered ownership of dogs; however, they don't account for the countless number of people who have picked up strays or acquired a dog from a friend of a friend. Needless to say, owning a dog is a part of American culture, but what's not typical is finding legitimate breeders who take pride in ensuring the animals they breed are worthy of their bloodline. Keith Siler is anything but typical. Keith is a breeder of the Italian Cane Corso. “The Cane Corso is a large breed originally called Italian Mastiffs. They are a beautiful breed and intelligent protectors,” Keith explains. The Cane Corso's lineage goes back to ancient Roman times, and the breed's name roughly translates from the Latin as ‘bodyguard-dog.' Keith shares he was initially attracted to the Corso because of their beauty and their complex reputation. According to the American Kennel Club, the Cane Corso is smart, trainable, and of noble bearing. They also identify the breed as being assertive, confident, and fearless protectors. Throughout Keith's life, he has always loved dogs. “As a kid, I always loved animals. It didn't matter if it was a stray mutt or not. I just loved dogs,” Keith explained. “When I was eleven, my mom bought me a pit bull terrier as a pet, and I've had a heart for the breed ever since.” Keith would begin his breeding journey with the American Pit Bull Terrier and shared that, like the Corse breed, American Pit Bulls are often misunderstood. “Pit Bulls are no more dangerous than any other breed. They require love like all dogs, but most importantly, you have to know how to train the animal.” In his late teens or early twenties, Keith started to study breeding, and he wanted to become an advocate for the pit bull terrier. “My goal wasn't just to breed the dog but to help save the bloodline. I believed that with proper breeding, I could create a stronger breed of the terrier and help change its reputation,” he shares. The American Pit Bull Terrier was categorized as a fighting dog breed in 19th-century England for just that purpose. The American Kennel Club doesn't recognize it as a distinct breed, but its cousin, the American Staffordshire Terrier, is. The love of the breed and seeing American Pit Bulls flourish is what has kept Keith going for almost thirty years. During this period, he was faced with the challenge of helping the American Pit Bull Terrier escape its image as a savage fighter. “As a kid, I didn't know what I had. It was a pet, a friend, and a companion to me. It wasn't until I became an adult that I learned what the Pit Bull breed was created for and why people wanted them. I felt like they were given a label because of how people chose to train and use them, not for what they were. For me, they were affectionate, protective, friendly, and playful, and I believed they could gain a different reputation with proper breeding. Yet, no matter what I did. I couldn't seem to move the needle,” he says. Breeding and boarding animals is an expensive business that can yield big dividends. Still, buyers didn't want to invest in the quality that Keith had poured his soul into. “The biggest issue I came across was that people wanted quality but didn't want to pay for it. I had a good reputation, but because I was from the area, people assumed my dogs were subpar,” Keith explained. “In truth, I was able to achieve my goal of creating a stronger bloodline with the American Pit Bull Terrier, but no one was willing to pay for the quality of the animal.” A period of rest would settle upon Keith, and he took a ten-year break from the breeding business. As fate would have it, his love for dogs brought him back. “I was disappointed that in all that time, I hadn't succeeded in helping change people's perspective of the Pit Bull. I had to realize that I was only one person. I could only do so much.” Keith shared. “I wanted to give breeding another try because I loved what I did.” This time, he ensured everything would be in place to make his breeding business successful, which involved finding the right dog. The time arrived when Keith was ready to resume breeding. He had a specific breed in mind. After investing so much into breeding the American Pit Bull and not getting a satisfying return on his investment, his focus changed to another breed of dog. “This time, I had done my research and set my sights on the Presa Canario,” he says. The Perro de Presa Canario is described as a strong-willed, confident, yet calm breed. It has an excellent reputation for being obedient and docile but suspicious of strangers. Keith says their nature offers a commercial appeal the average dog lover wants. Amazingly, in his effort to procure the Presa Canario, he was redirected when a friend introduced him to the Cane Corso. “I had a lead on a Presa Canario, but it fell through,” Keith explained, “Then, one of my friends, Allen Holmes, called me and enlightened me about the Cane Corso breed. He owned two of them, and he sent me a video, and I was sold.” Because of the strength and dominance the Cane Corso is born with, potential breeders are encouraged to do their homework. According to the American Kennel Club, at almost 28 inches tall and sometimes weighing more than one hundred pounds, the Corso, with their large heads and rippling muscles, project an imposing and intimidating image. The animal is said to look and think the way a bodyguard would. The breed is intelligent, loyal, and eager to please, yet it can be willful and leave the owner wondering who is the master. For this reason, it's recommended that breeders and owners understand that it is essential to establish dominance early with regular training. “I was told that if I was serious about breeding these dogs, I needed to do about two years of research and preparation,” Keith says. After completing his research, Keith knew he had found his breed. In 2020, he launched his new breeding business, Siler's Cane Corso's, and hasn't looked back. Again, Keith loves all dogs, regardless of breed, and his love for the Corso is authentically genuine. He says, “Despite their reputation for being strong-willed and sensitive, these animals are so majestic and intelligent that training them is easy. I now have eight in my kennel, and people are amazed at how well-behaved they are.” Keith is taking steps to build the reputation needed to be seen as a serious contender in the Corso community. “I have secured my breeder's license and Kennel number. I have also entered several dog shows to get our name out there. My ultimate goal is to make breeding the Corso my only source of income. That's just how much I love working with these dogs,” Keith shares. He also plans to help potential owners by educating them about the importance of continuing and maintaining the lifelong training the Corso requires. “Right now, I breed them, but I plan to expand my Kennel's services and assist people with training.” As a breeder, Keith must possess a great amount of attention to detail. “Because this breed is so exclusive, sometimes the cost for purchase can be prohibitive. So, I am careful about who I sell the dogs to. I need them to understand the investment they are making when they purchase one of my Cane Corsos,” he says. As Keith continues to build the Siler Cane Corso brand, he is concerned about how his efforts will benefit the Cane Corso breed's longevity. “Just like the American Pit Bull, I want to bring more awareness to the Cane Corso breed. I want to be intentional about breeding and create something that will continue its bloodline,” he says. These are the true words of a breeder and natural lover of all dogs. Responsibly Developing New Breeds… What Does That Look Like? The facts are that all but a very, very limited handful of our breeds today have been created by mankind for some purpose. Companionship is a purpose. I would like to introduce you to the Toy Fox Terrier, for example. As society moves away from agrarian and hunter gatherer lives, companion breeds and even new companion breeds are more in demand than ever. Society changes. And I think that when we talk about purebred dogs being living history, in some cases that history is still being made and there are different needs in today's society than there were 100 or 200 years ago. [caption id="attachment_12482" align="alignleft" width="321"] DASH DNJ HOP UWP URO1 EGRCH SB Knightfall SPOT[/caption] Join me for a conversation with Nikki Holcomb about the American Bully. Recognized by the United Kennel Club in 2013, Holcomb is leading the push to responsibly develop this companion breed with health testing, temperament testing, breeding goals, a breed standard and more. “The American Bully is a companion breed,” Holcomb said. “A lot of people, when they see them, will immediately question that. They're like, ‘Are you sure these are dogs in the companion group?' Even when we're at dog shows, we're standing ringside and they're like, ‘Are you sure at the right ring?' And I'm like, ‘I'm absolutely positive.' It's surprising to people, I think, to see a big bulky dog beside a little bichon or a little toy poodle or whatnot, and they're like, well, we just really don't understand. And that's valid. There are people out there that want to have a bigger dog, a little bit bigger than medium size, that can do all of the really fun sports, but they really don't want a working dog. Or maybe they don't want the attitude of a terrier, or they don't want to deal with the baying of a scent hound or the quirks that come with the sight hound. You know, whatever it may be. But they want to sport dog. Or they want a dog that can go on three-mile hikes with them or go swimming at the lake and they're like, well, do I get a small dog or do I just go with some of the things I don't enjoy as much and I think American Bullies do fill that space really well. “They're very easy to train. They're incredibly handler oriented. They're absolutely in love with their people, to the point where they've never met a stranger. Protective is definitely not on their list. A lot of people will see them. They're like, oh, they're guardians. They're 100% not guardians. They're not going to protect you. That burglar coming in the house is their best friend. They're super outgoing, they're fun loving and they love to try everything you know, anything you could do. They're excited to do it.” “The official listing of founding breeds for the American Bully are the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pitbull Terrier, Old English Bulldog and English bulldog. [caption id="attachment_12480" align="alignleft" width="307"] Health testing for the American Bully. Infographic by Anissa Shotbolt.[/caption] “I think they really took traits from each of these breeds and really focused on making a dog that could be calm enough and low drive enough to be with a young family, with young kids, or even a first time pet owner.

That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership
We have the amazing privilege to have Chris Marohn on this episode where he shares a valuable story from early in his career to remind us to surround ourselves with smart people who are willing to disagree with us. Chris illustrates the value of meeting people where they are while taking the time to communicate to people that they are important and that their voices are heard. He advocates for mental health awareness and reminds us that there is a lot of work trauma in many of our past experiences. He shares that we aren't the person that can reach everyone, but we can show them enough love to get them moving in a positive direction. We don't have to do things the way they have always been done and we need to work harder to recognize our own implicit biases. Many don't want to face or even overcome their biases because it would force them to change or leave their comfort zone. We can lead others even those we don't have authority over by showing interest in them and by asking for their sincere help because people want to feel needed and connected and that is why we need to take the time to get to know them and pay attention to the members on our teams so we can help offer them right opportunities to grow at the most opportune time. Chris started his career in politics. He was encouraged by all those around him to get involved and make the changes he wanted to see in the world. During his high school and undergraduate years, he worked with various political and policy organizations to help farmworkers in the Sacramento Valley. He continued his passion for elimination of bias and anti-racism during his time working at various levels of political campaigning and government. He has served in posts from Washington DC to local city government in the pursuit of equity under the law. Currently, Chris is working with The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law as the Director of Employer Relations in the Office of Career and Employment Services. Previously, he was the Director of the Continuing Legal Education program at ASU Law. In his current role, Chris, is responsible for Diversity Summer Clerkship hiring and advising. He meets with students of diverse backgrounds encouraging and mentoring them into achieving their legal career goals, while trying to diversify the legal profession. Chris has recently been tasked with overseeing the pipeline to law school program with Phoenix Unified School District, with the focus of helping underserved communities get the tools needed to be successful in law school. Chris graduated in 2012 from Monterey College of Law in Monterey, California. During this time we worked full time, campaigned for members of congress and local office, was president of the Student Bar Association and local chapter of Delta Theta Phi. Chris and his wife, Megan, have been married for ten years and are passionate about advocacy in ending Breed Specific Legislation, as they have a loving American Staffordshire Terrier, and coaching Special Olympics Baseball. Bryant Mortimer is a licensed Realtor with BPG Residential, apart of Keller Williams Capital Properties. As a native Washingtonian, Bryant always had a genuine interest in and appreciation for the neighborhoods that make up the Greater Washington Metropolitan Region. From Ivy City to Petworth, Navy Yard to The Palisades, Clarendon to Del Ray, each has its own unique aesthetic. Following graduation from Roanoke College Bryant returned to The District, and moved into a three bedroom row home just off of Anna Cooper Circle in Le Droit Park. Living in this historic neighborhood, founded in the late 19th century with 64 original homes all unique in design, is what triggered his interest in a future in real estate. One thing led to another and life took him down a different path, but after a number of years in a corporate software sales role he decided to transition away from what he likes to call a "sell umm and forget umm" type of transaction to something that is based more on relationship building, trust, and professionalism. When he is not walking neighborhoods with clients, or holding open houses, you can find him playing softball, advocating for the American Red Cross, taking in a Capitals or Nationals game, barbecuing with family and friends, or taking Millie, his American Staffordshire Terrier, out to West Virginia for a weekend in the woods. www.bpgreal.com
Happy Howlidays! This week we cover a very special topic to Kipp's heart, the complicated history of Pitbulls. This episode is a little sadder and darker, but gives us an interesting look into these sweet bowling balls of love. Merry Pitmas to all and to all Pitbulls no more fights! My best friend was born to kill. It was not her choice, and perhaps not her fault. But she has a history of violence that would make a serial killer squirm. There was the time she ripped open someone's head and left their ear hanging from a string of skin. Or the time that she grabbed her victim's throat so tightly that the screams went silent. It was like someone hit the mute button on a horror movie. But perhaps the worst incident occurred in my own home. I came back to my apartment one day to blood on the kitchen floor. I heard whimpering from the bedroom.“What hell is going on!”I rushed in and saw my best friend's sister on the ground, with her face sliced half open. I rushed her to the hospital where her cheek was surgically rebuilt. The perpetrator showed no remorse for the attack. You might be wondering why I am friends with someone like this. The easiest answer is that my best friend is a dog — to be precise, an American Staffordshire Terrier rescued from a dog fighting circle — and so are her victims. But the easiest answer is often not the best one. And here is the right answer: Lisa is my best friend because she taught me what it means to love.Read Wayne's other writings here (Substack)Music by Moby: Everything That Rises

Quand on dit American Staffordshire Terrier, certains vont automatiquement penser chien méchant, chien féroce, chien dangereux…. Here's what we covered on the episode: How Mychelle and I met on one of my webinars last year and how she was the first to apply to my Mastermind Mychelle shares how she first got started in working for nonprofits on the administrative side while working with some clients on the side and eventually moved to association management The story of how Mychelle and her team were laid off because the people who ran the association were looking to do a different model How Mychelle had been going to school on the side studying web and has been doing websites on the side since the Internet first became accessible When Mychelle got laid off she took her severance pay and went back to school, finished up a coding bootcamp program and went from there Mychelle shares that after she got laid off, people she had met along the way through the association contacted her to do part time work After doing so much part time work Mychelle realized she could do this full time instead of always looking for a job Mychelle shares that she does a lot of WordPress but can do pretty much any platform and works with a lot of small businesses, start-ups, nonprofits and associations What sets Mychelle apart is that she has a wide background in content writing and social media and creates a personalized service to each of her clients The services Mychelle offers includes, website design/redesign, WordPress sites, SEO, Google Analytics, content writing and website audits Mychelle also shares that she doesn't have set prices for any of her services because she feels that everything she does for clients is different highly personalized How Mychelle gets her business from a small community of animal behavior professionals because she used to be a dog trainer, from networking locally and doing some advertisements How to network and become connected by joining BNI (Business Networking International) if there is a chapter near you, using Meetup.com and search for groups that have to do with your niche, small businesses or entrepreneurs, and then use Facebook to become part of small business groups in your area How networking might be difficult for you but you should do it anyways and go in with topics you can talk about to make it a little easier, and how you should have an elevator speech prepared Mychelle explains what website accessibility is and how it comes from the ADA (Americans Disabilities Act) How most people follow WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) How you should put yourself in the shoes of someone with a disability and try to navigate your website and see how accessible it is Main issues you want to look for include contrast colors for people who have a visual disability and making sure your site is properly set up to work with a screen reader for people who are blind How you should make sure your site is accessible by keyboard only for people who have physical disabilities and cannot use a mouse or touch screens Why you should make sure your videos have captions and an audio file to go with for those who are deaf or those who may have a visual disability Other things to look out for are making sure your site doesn't lack header tags, which the screen reader looks for, making sure your site doesn't just use PDFs because they generally aren't accessible Offer a link to skip navigation so they can get through the site quicker and making sure you use proper anchor tags for links that are descriptive and underlining your links Mychelle shares that if you have a page that times out after a certain amount of time you want to provide a static version because people with a visual or learning disability won't be able to get through it as quickly How if you have an autoplay video or audio on your site making sure you allow them to stop, pause it or slow it down because they might not be able to process it as quickly How providing an email or phone number people can contact if they get stuck is useful that way they can ask questions and get help Mychelle shares that there are free website checkers that will tell you how accessible to your website is and tell you where there are issues How including an Accessibility Policy can show that you are making an effort and will continue to is better than not including one and potentially be targeted for a lawsuit Links mentioned: Mychelle's website Mychelle's Accessibility Tips BNI (Business Networking International) Meetup.com Like what you heard?
DISCLAIMER: This episode features dogs who decided to bark loudly. Please be cautious when listening with headphones. We thought it would be fun to feature both dogs this episode. Talk about how much joy they bring us, how we'll live longer with them. What we got was a couple hours of barking, pooping, and begging for edamame.

Take Me Home - Pet Adoption and Animal Rescue - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)
Susan Daffron talks to Chase Inman and Nicole Cook from the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA in Southwest Virginia about two dogs who are available for adoption. Tattoo is a male neutered American Staffordshire Terrier mix with huge soulful brown eyes and a pretty reddish brown coat. He has a very round face, so he might have some bulldog in there somewhere too. Tattoos best canine buddy at the SPCA is another AmStaff mix named Elvira, who has a fawn-colored coat and white markings. These two wonderful dogs would fit in well in just about any home. The volunteer dog walkers all love these two friendly dogs -- fans and supporters range from elementary school age to retirees. Both Tattoo and Elvira are about two years old. The SPCA doesn't know too much about their history because they came into the SPCA from other facilities after being picked up as strays. If you're looking for all around great dogs who walk beautifully on leash, you won't find a nicer pair of dogs than Tattoo and Elvira! Susan Daffron talks to Cynthia Farrell from Pet Haven in Minnesota about a dog named Bishop who is available for adoption. Bishop is one of those "Heinz 57" dogs who looks like he has some American Staffordshire Terrier in him, but also probably a mix of other breeds too. He is a dark blonde with a cute white stripe on his note and light tummy. Bishop is around a year old now and has been in Pet Haven's foster care program since June of 2008. When he was just 4 months old, he was rescued with a number of other dogs from a hoarding situation. Since he's been in foster care, Bishop has been through two obedience classes and the transformation in his behavior has been amazing. Bishop is a total people lover, and loves to be the center of attention. Because he's young and still a bit of a puppy, Bishop is an exuberant boy who likes nothing better than chasing tennis balls and playing. Ideally, Bishop is looking for a home where he can receive a lot of attention from an owner who wants a great canine buddy to hang out with. Although Bishop is crate trained and used to being left alone for up to a full work day, he would appreciate lunch-time outings. Bishop would also benefit from an owner who is willing to continue his obedience training. Another training class will help Bishop bond with his new family. Won't you take a leap of faith and see how perfectly wonderful Bishop might be for you? Susan Daffron talks to Samantha Westbrook from the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter about an American Staffordshire Terrier named Bear. This dog came in as a stray and has been at the shelter since August. He's a pretty boy with a brindle coat and a happy-go-lucky smile. Even though he's been at the shelter for a while, he hasn't lost one bit of his good humor and gets along great with other dogs and people. Bear also just graduated on November 21 from obedience class. The West LA Animal Shelter works with the k9 Connection program, which pairs at-risk teens with dogs that are available for adoption. The kids train homeless shelter dogs in basic obedience and help the dogs develop the skills to become more adoptable You can even see Bear's graduation photo on the Program Participant page -- check out "Bear 2" at the top of the (he's Bear 2, since another dog named Bear was in the program). Now that Bear has completed his training, he's more than ready for the next phase of his life to begin. If you're looking for a sweet, loving dog that's already had basic obedience training, check out Bear.
