Dr. Jonathan Gingrich is a professor of engineering at Dordt College in Iowa. A trained chemical and environmental engineer, he started teaching transportation engineering due to staffing shortages. Unsatisfied with the standard materials required for the class, he incorporated the book "Confessions of a Recovering Engineer" by Chuck Marohn into his curriculum and had his class conduct a Crash Analysis Studio. In this episode of The Bottom-Up Revolution, Dr. Gingrich shares how his unusual background helped him see past engineering codes and look for a better way to design streets. He explains the logistics of incorporating crash analysis and safe street design into the classroom, as well as the benefits it had for his students. This is a repost of Episode 51, shared again in April 2023 due to the importance and timeliness of the topics in this discussion. Kelly and Felix join to talk about their new book Racing Toward Zero – The Untold Story of Driving Green. Kelly Senecal is a co-founder and owner of Convergent Science. Felix Leach is an Associate Professor of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, a post held jointly with that of Fellow and Tutor in Engineering Science at Keble College Order the book now: https://www.sae.org/publications/books/content/r-501/ About Racing Toward Zero: In Racing Toward Zero, the authors explore the issues inherent in developing sustainable transportation. They review the types of propulsion systems and vehicle options, discuss low-carbon fuels and alternative energy sources, and examine the role of regulation in curbing emissions. All technologies have an impact on the environment, from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and hybrids—there is no silver bullet. The battery electric vehicle may seem the obvious path to a sustainable, carbon-free transportation future, but it's not the only, nor necessarily the best, path forward. The vast majority of vehicles today use the internal combustion engine (ICE), and this is unlikely to change anytime soon. Improving the ICE and its fuels—entering a new ICE age—must be a main route on the road to zero emissions. How do we go green? The future requires a balanced approach to transportation. It's not a matter of choosing between combustion or electrification; it's combustion and electrification. As the authors say, “The future is eclectic.” By harnessing the best qualities of both technologies, we will be in the best position to address our transportation future as quickly as possible. Kelly's bio: Linkedin page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/senecal/ Kelly Senecal is a co-founder and owner of Convergent Science. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a co-founder and director of the Computational Chemistry Consortium (C3), and an associate editor of the journal Transportation Engineering. Kelly is a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), a member of the executive committee of the ASME ICE Division, a member of the board of advisors for the Central States Section of the Combustion Institute, and the 2019 recipient of the ASME Internal Combustion Engine Award. Kelly has long been an advocate of creating cleaner combustion engines, with particular focus on CFD and HPC to enable faster design. Starting with his TEDx talk in late 2016, he has been promoting a diverse mix of propulsion system technologies through invited talks, articles, and social media. Kelly is co-author of the new book “Racing toward zero: the untold story of driving green,” available in May from SAE. School of Engineering, University of Birmingham - UK I have often said that the lure of flying is the lure of beauty. - Amelia Earhart  In this week's podcast, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Professor Naira Hovakimyan joins me to discuss how the development of the new Center for Autonomous Vehicles in Air Transportation Engineering (AVIATE) at UIUC will help charter a course for flying taxis! We investigate Hovakimyan's L1 adaptive flight control system and the role it will play in the development of this kind of autonomous aircraft. We also chat about the different technologies developed by team members at UIUC in association with this project and how various universities and companies including Georgia Tech, MIT, Boeing, Kitty Hawk and Google Wing are coming together to make flying taxis a reality. Keeping with our high flying theme this week, I also check out the details of a new air utility vehicle called the Speeder 2 unveiled by Mayman Aerospace at the recent Draper Venture Network CEO Summit in California.

Show notes: linkedin.com/in/brandonbartneck/racingtowardzero About Racing Toward Zero: In Racing Toward Zero, the authors explore the issues inherent in developing sustainable transportation. The battery electric vehicle may seem the obvious path to a sustainable, carbon-free transportation future, but it’s not the only, nor necessarily the best, path forward. The vast majority of vehicles today use the internal combustion engine (ICE), and this is unlikely to change anytime soon. Improving the ICE and its fuels—entering a new ICE age—must be a main route on the road to zero emissions. How do we go green? The future requires a balanced approach to transportation. It’s not a matter of choosing between combustion or electrification; it’s combustion and electrification. As the authors say, “The future is eclectic.” By harnessing the best qualities of both technologies, we will be in the best position to address our transportation future as quickly as possible. For the loyal CEA audience out there that listened to a previous episode on the best resources for the AM portion of the PE exam, the School of PE is already a well-known and innovative player in the exam preparation material industry. With its recently released breadth review guide, it brought a modern feel to the industry by not only providing a different printing style but also an integrated use of technology to enhance the learning experience. Today, Isaac sits down to talk to the man in charge of all this. Vinod Dega is a civil engineer and School of PE's president who came from India to the US to get his Master's in Transportation Engineering at the Ohio State University. His passion for teaching and helping others made him notice that many people would struggle in their preparation for the FE and PE exams - what started out as him personally teaching colleagues, has now become a key company in the exam preparation industry today, with 7 books published, lots of question banks developed, and a lot of students enrolled in their courses. Vinod and Isaac discuss the process for developing the PE manuals and review guides, the decision to include AR features in the books, and how the ever-changing NCEES spec may affect the School of PE's materials. In addition, Vinod mentions the importance of getting a professional license no matter how long we've been out of school, as well as the best advice he's ever received in his life and who gave it to him. Kenyona Pierre is currently a Sustainability Consultant with Energy Cost Solutions Group, LLC (ECSG,LLC). She is still involved with the USGBC Florida Chapter, GBES' Green Building Matters Community, and Habitat for Humanity Young Professionals. Her goal and passion for green buildings and sustainability remain the same.   Kenyona Pierre - Early Career Kenyona is a native to Miami, Florida.  She was introduced to engineering in high school and at that time wanted to be an architect.  She was open minded about it and decided she would do both. So Kenyona pursued architectural engineering at Tennessee State and then upon graduation she got a job as an engineering intern and was in their sustainable group.  Kenyona went on and did post graduate coursework in Transportation Engineering at the University of Alabama and then earned her MBA from Florida Institute of Technology. “What I got out of it is the best of both worlds.  It was one of those niches and engineering that really don't get much, it just doesn't get as much accolades as it should.  It's basically engineering the systems of a building that are just, engineering the systems or to all the systems. We focused on the structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, acoustics even go into the facade of the building as well as the construction management portion of it.” - Kenyona Pierre   Career Highlights Kenyona is currently working on a lot of sustainability documentation.  It's not all strictly towards LEED but she is learning the background about how you become building certified.  Kenyona spent a lot of time advocating for the movement and learning about green buildings and sustainability. “It is completely different once you actually get into the trenches and start, you know, documentation and trying to go through the actual process of certifying the buildings. And so it's a lot of project management.  I'm learning to utilize the skills that I obtained in my MBA program. And so a lot of the projects that I've been working on is, it's a mix.” - Kenyona Pierre   Proudest Accomplishments Some accomplishments that Kenyona is proud of is the completion of her EcoDistricts AP credential last summer. She has been part of the inaugural cohort for the AIA Miami Christopher Kelly Leadership Development Program.  Kenyona will be wrapping up this program soon and is looking forward to utilizing the skills set developed from her time participating in the program.   Book Recommendations Atomic Habits by James Clear Matilda by Roald Dahl The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish Tune into this podcast to listen to the rest of Kenyona Pierre's journey in this podcast hosted by Charlie.   Connect with Kenyona Pierre: LinkedIn E-mail   Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES: Charlie on LinkedIn Green Building Educational Services GBES on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn Like on Facebook Google+ GBES Pinterest Pins GBES on Instagram   GBES is excited our membership community is growing.  Consider joining our membership community as members are given access to some of the guests on the podcasts that you can ask project questions. Cities are the engines of economic growth because they provide opportunities for enhanced productivity. They provide opportunities for productive spatial arrangements, often involving “clustering” and “agglomerating.” But these widely cited descriptors are seldom defined. This research uses business location data for Los Angeles County to test various associated questions. (1) To what extent do technological links explain spatial clustering? (2) How does this vary by industry? (3) Are the smallest firms attracted to the densest areas because they are most dependent on information developed by others? (4) How does this vary by industry? This research investigates these questions at the sub-metropolitan (traffic analysis zone) level. STEMxm Episode 3 -  Interview with Jessica Rodriguez-Gomez, Transportation (Civil) Engineer (Fair warning - there's some dogs barking in the background at one point in this episode) Jessica's Bio Jessica Rodriguez-Gomez graduated from the University of Texas El Paso where she earned a BS in Civil Engineering in 1985 and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (with a focus on Transportation) in 1991. In 1985, she was the only female graduate in her class major.  Jessica has over 30 years of experience in transportation, primarily with roadway design. Jessica started her career working for TXDOT, where she worked as the only female engineer in the district for years. She currently works as a Senior Project Manager for Freese and Nichols, Inc. The Episode Something I want to highlight here is what Jessica described about her background at the beginning of the podcast. Neither of her parents went to college. She has an older sibling who went to college ahead of her, but he studied music. The reason Jessica went into engineering as a major is because her guidance counselor pointed out her strengths in mathematics and science and therefore, suggested Engineering as an option to her. This is incredibly poignant. Guidance Counselors, Teachers, and Parents can have a huge influence on a young person's path. Also, for any young person reading this, I want to remind you that you have it in you. You can accomplish academically what you set your mind to. Another important highlight from this episode - Finding out what you don't want to do is just as important as finding out what you want to do. Jessica highlighted this with respect to earning a Masters degree - better to learn through some work experience before finding a specialty area that you earn a focused, research degree in. Towards the middle of the episode, Jessica described her perspective on the difference between working for government and working for a consulting firm. For a little more insight into this you can also check out the short video I made about job options in Engineering here.  Things Jessica said to try and learn (or classes to take) while you're still in school: Business Basics How and engineering budget is put together How to put together a construction schedule Classes on Project or Construction Management At a consulting internship - ask to listen in on marketing calls/meetings You can also learn more about the sub disciplines of Civil Engineering (like Transportation) careers by visiting the Occupational Outlook Handbook.   STEMxm is available on iTunes & Stitcher:

Urban bicyclists’ uptake of traffic-related air pollution is still not well quantified, due to a lack of direct measurements of uptake and a lack of analysis of the variation in uptake. This paper describes and establishes the feasibility of a novel method for measuring bicyclists’ uptake of volatile organic compounds (VOC) by sampling breath concentrations. Early results from the data set demonstrate the ability of the proposed method to generate findings for transportation analysis, with statistically significant exposure and uptake differences from bicycling on arterial versus bikeway facilities for several traffic-related VOC. These results provide the first empirical evidence that the usage of bikeways (or greenways) by bicyclists within an urban environment can significantly reduce uptake of dangerous traffic-related gas pollutants. Dynamic concentration and respiration data reveal unfavorable correlations from a health impacts perspective, where bicyclists’ respiration and travel time are greater at higher-concentration locations on already high-concentration roadways (arterials). Alex Bigazzi is a Ph.D. candidate in Transportation Engineering at PSU, where he is also teaching a class on transportation emissions modeling. His dissertation investigates how urban bicyclists' uptake of air pollution while riding is affected by the transportation system. Alex's dissertation committee is chaired by Miguel Figliozzi, with members Jim Pankow, Robert Bertini, and Jennifer Dill.
