Happy Monday, Christmas Fanatics! And Happy February! We are one month closer to the most wonderful time of the year! This week, Julia and Anthony - sans Thom due to life! - gather to discuss the 2024 comedy film, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever", which is based on the famous children's book of the same name by Barbara Robinson. In many ways, it's similar to Hulu's 2024 offering, "Nutcrackers", but does the more family friendly story with more overt religious undertones work better for the elves than Ben Stiller's morose comedy? You'll just have to tune in to find out! But one thing's for sure: this is one festive episode that will definitely give you those warm Christmas fuzzies on this cold, February, Monday morning. So settle back, relax, and enjoy! As always, thanks for your love and support, y'all!
On this episode of the daily with Syl Stein, I am talking about the best selling book by the late author Barbara Robinson, the best Christmas pageant ever which was published in 1972. It also had a TV movie back in 1983 and now it has become a motion picture directed by the amazing Dallas Jenkins of the chosen. I am talking all about this book and the books by Barbara Robinson. I hope you will check it out happy 2025.

We kick-off this year's 12 Days of Christmas series by catching-up on a new release! Rachel joins us to discuss The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, based on the beloved book from the 1970s. You can click on the link to listen.
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy We pride ourselves on staying on the cutting edge of Christmas movies, especially those made for Christians by Christians. That's why we were excited to visit our local theater to see the new, widely-released Dallas Jenkins film based on the popular children's novel of the same name. Originally authored by Barbara Robinson in 1972, THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER tells the story of the Herdman family, affectionately dubbed “the worst kids in the world”. The Herdmans effectively run their small town of Emmanuel because no one can control their bad behavior. The town always had a sanctuary away from the mischief in church, but this seal was broken when the Herdman kids discovered the free snacks offered and insisted on participating in the yearly Christmas pageant. A cherished town tradition in Emmanuel, the Herdmans risk destroying the Christmas Pageant through their destructive irreverence, but instead their sincere, outsider curiosity about Christianity ends up winning over the hearts and minds of the rest of the congregation, creating a special memory of THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER. Director Dallas Jenkins (son of Jerry B. Jenkins, co-author of the original LEFT BEHIND book series) was apparently so passionate about bringing THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER to life on film that he set a daily reminder in his phone to pray for acquiring the rights to the story. It's a shame that this passion didn't manifest in the final project, which is styled so blandly and portrayed so literally to the text that the story comes across as cruel and inhumane toward the Herdmans instead of whimsical. In this special episode, Jen and Amy get a visit from a Hollywood darling we've loved in countless films and shows like The Descendants, Archer, 27 Dresses, Arrested Development and 13 Going on 30 to talk about her newest project based on the beloved children's book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! Actress Judy Greer talks about what it's like to collaborate on such a treasured holiday story that she somehow missed out on as a kid but was lucky enough to discover when she was cast for the role. She sets the scene for what it was like to film the movie last fall in wintry Winnipeg with a cast full of kids on set and also takes a moment to share some highlights from earlier in her career. Also in this episode: Amy and Jen talk about their mixed feelings toward pageants and public performances. As you might guess, one of them loves them, one hates them. In our GenXcellence segment, Jen and Amy recount their first movie-without-parents experiences. And we Rant or Rave about decorating the house at Christmastime. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “I directed so many programs with my sisters and my girl cousins, and my parents were very, very mediocre audience members. If you're going to have four kids, guess what you get to do? You're going to sit on the brown corduroy couch and watch our shitty programs. That's part of the deal. We practiced for six hours. I had choreography. At one point, I gave Lindsay an umbrella that she had to open at just the right lyric in the song and the bitch could not do it and it was so upsetting.” – Jen Hatmaker “I think what's so beautiful about this story is that it's about unity, and compassion, and empathy. And it's about being welcoming.” – Judy Greer Resources Mentioned in This Episode: 48 Hours movie (1982) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083511/ Film Rating Guide - https://www.motionpictures.org/film-ratings/ Top Gun movie (1986) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092099/ The Shining movie (1980) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081505/ Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - https://drafthouse.com/austin 37th Street Austin Light Display - https://www.instagram.com/37thstreetlights/ Arrested Development - https://www.netflix.com/title/70140358 13 Going on 30 movie (2004) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337563/ The Descendants movie (2011) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1033575/ I Don't Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star by Judy Greer - https://amzn.to/4hiDC0y The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: A Christmas Holiday Book for Kids by Barbara Robinson - https://amzn.to/3YzrNfh The Best Christmas Pageant Ever movie (2024) - https://bestchristmaspageantever.movie/ Archer - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1486217/ Citizen Ruth movie (1996) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115906/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 Dallas Jenkins - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0420817/?ref_=tt_ov_dr_1 Pete Holmes - https://peteholmes.com/ Guest's Links: Judy's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/missjudygreer Judy's Twitter - https://x.com/missjudygreer Judy's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/OfficialJudyGreer/ Movie Links: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/bestchristmaspageantevermovie/ The Best Christmas Pageant Ever's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/BestChristmasPageantEverMovie The Best Christmas Pageant Ever's Twitter - https://x.com/BCPEMovie Connect with Jen! It might seem odd to consider that "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" is kind of an anomaly among Christmas movies: It's set in modern day, but actually focuses on the real meaning of Christmas--you know, the religious meaning. Perhaps you remember reading the book when you were a kid. Maybe you've seen the stage production that's made the rounds over the years. Or maybe you even watched the 1980's TV movie. But now there is a new feature-length version coming to theaters on November 8th. In this Movie Show Digital Extra, producers Chet Thomas and Darin McDaniel join Andy Farnsworth to talk about the movie, the 20+ year journey to get it made, the desire and efforts to make sure it stayed fully true to the source material, how they got "The Chosen's" Dallas Jenkins to direct, how they cast the young Herdmans, and why this particular story has resonated with so many people over the decades. Today's reading is Luke 2:1-14 (or any of the Gospels!). Stori and Rayah talk about Christmas in a more general way - their personal christmas histories, The War on Christmas™, capitalism, and traditions. Stori reads an excerpt from “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” by Barbara Robinson. They ask us to think about what the phrase “Jesus is the reason for the season” means and consider whether the way we celebrate Christmas reflects the life and love of Jesus Christ. Not to shame, but to breathe life and creativity into a season in which many of us feel pressured to celebrate a certain way. We all need a king who is truly for us. Not just when we are strong or good, but when we are weak and anything but good. Not just when we know where we are going, but when we have lost our way. We need a king who is truly there for us, who will not abandon us, even when we ignore him, doubt him, blame him or turn our backs on him. The good news is that we have a kind like that! A king that knows our human vulnerability, sees us as precious, and is with us now and forever.Sermon Notes: https://www.bible.com/events/48991413Prayer Requests: https://ccefc.ccbchurch.com/goto/forms/2509/responses/new22.12.04
