Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), and A Bay of Blood (1971) There are films by certain directors that are truly iconic—classics of the genre we sometimes assume everyone has already seen. But it's easy to forget that, right now, there are fans just beginning their journey into horror. Whether due to age or a newfound curiosity, they're taking their first steps into the genre. For those unfamiliar with him, we'd like to introduce one of horror's true maestros: Mario Bava. And for those already acquainted with his work, maybe it's time for a revisit—to once again be stunned by what he brings to the screen. If it's been a few years, you may find yourself seeing things in a whole new way. That's one of the beautiful things about cinema. The three films we've chosen highlight important parts of Bava's career and show how his work helped shape entire subgenres—from gothic horror to giallo to the slasher film. Whether you're discovering him for the first time or coming back for a fresh look, these films are a perfect place to begin. One quick correction: Edgar Wallace was a British writer, not American. Films mentioned in this episode: Baron Blood (1972), A Bay of Blood (1971), Black Sabbath (1963), Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), Caltiki the Immortal Monster (1959), The Church (1989), Creature with the Blue Hand (1967), Curse of the Crying Woman (1963), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Danger: Diabolik (1968), The Day the Sky Exploded (1958), Death Walks at Midnight (1972), Death Walks in High Heels (1971), Deep Red (1975), The Demon (1982), Demons (1985), Django Kill…If You Live, Shoot! (1967), Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs (1966), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932), Erik the Conqueror (1961), Eyeball (1975), The Four of the Apocalypse (1975), Frankenstein '80 (1972), Frankenstein Island (1981), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th (1981), The Giant of Marathon (1959), The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963), The Great Silence (1968), Hatchet for a Honeymoon (1970), Hercules in the Haunted World (1961), Horror of Dracula (1958), Inferno (1980), I Vampiri (1957), Knives of the Avenger (1966), Long Hair of Death (1964), Night Child (1975), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Planet of the Vampires (1965), Psycho (1960), She (1965), Shock (1977), Suspiria (1977), Thunderball (1965), The Toolbox Murders (1978), Torso (1973), The Whip and the Body (1963), Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972)

Hey everybody! It's week three of my Halloween Mario Bava coverage! My buddy Jeremiah is here with me (we typically cover Phantom Stranger, and other wacky oddities), and we dive headfirst into the madness of this porto-slasher film! It's a bit of an odd one in my humble opinion, but also very fascinating. An interesting cast that we talk about as well as the differences between Bava's previous films and this one. This was a first watch for JJG, and I love it when a guest is coming in raw, whether it's a movie or a comic. So, grab your plane ticket, and lets head to Eastern Europe! As usual, if you'd like to ;eave any feedback for the show, you can do so through email at Magazinesandmonsters@gmail.com or to me on Twitter @Billyd_licious or on the show's FB page (I'm also on BlueSky @docstrange@bsky.social)! Does this attempt to bring the traditional gothic horror into the modern day with gialli elements work, or was Bava barking up the wrong tree here? Were Elke Sommer's vocal cords the same after this one? How did this film help inspire a popular urban legend/internet hoax? Step into our audio torture dungeon and find out. You’ve heard of fantasy football, right?Today, we option our favorite comic book stories and turn them into television shows and feature films.OK, let us explain. Back around 2008, Hollywood was optioning comic book IPs left and right. The success of shows like 'Smallville' and 'The Walking Dead' to movies like '300' and the 'X-Men' franchise had the suits champing at the bit for ripe comic properties. Out of that era, we got some good stuff (A History of Violence, Ghost World, RED) along with a few stinkers (The Spirit, Painkiller Jane, the Blade TV show). So for sh*ts and giggles, the three of us each pick a story, cast it with actors, hire creative departments, and produce it into a film or television show.So imagine a world with an 'Uncanny X-Men' movie starring Rutger Hauer as Magneto and Grace Jones as Storm? Or an 'Invaders' TV show featuring William Zabka as the original Human Torch and Ralph Fiennes as Baron Blood? Or an adaptation of 'Sandman Mystery Theatre' starring James McAvoy as Wesley Dodds and Emilia Clarke as Dian Belmont? We GO there. *And hey, be sure to check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for original concept art created exclusively for this episode by Dwight and Adrian!*  As always, thanks for listening to Sidebar Forever. Just in time for All Hollows eve. And I mean “just”. So what comic character do you think of when you think of Halloween? Captain America right? No? Well no worries, it happens to be a Vampire story in a Captain America comic. A Roger Stern/John Byrne Captain America comic story. But there is so much more: The Invaders. A Dirty Harry scene that will make you feel lucky. Flashbacks of great villains; Asbestos Lady anyone? Vampire dental plan discussions. Wait, did we really talk about that? 3rd Degree Byrne is proud to cover Captain America 253-254. We did lift up the cover in time to read it though. Tim Elliott, Brian Hughes, David Thompson, John Hijatt and Kirk Greenfield all gather one last time before Halloween to go over these books and discuss the finer points of the differences between the printings in a comic vs the Omnibus, trade paperback or digital copy. So pull up your candy haul for the night, turn off the light and listen as 3rd Degree Byrne covers Captain America 253-254.Feedback for this show can be sent to: gottagetbyrned@gmail.com3rd Degree Byrne is proud to be part of the TwoTrueFreaks Internet Radio Network http://twotruefreaks.com/main.php Two True Freaks! is a proud member of BOTH the Comics Podcast Network(http://www.comicspodcasts.com/) and the League of Comic Book Podcasts(http://www.comicbooknoise.com/league/)!! For 1972's Baron Blood, director Mario Bava brought together the talents of some of the era's greatest genre stars and designers.  German actress Elke Sommer played the female lead and would do so again in Bava's Lisa and the Devil.  Future Oscar winner Carlo Rambaldi provided the gory make-up.  Bava fave Stelvio Cipriani composed the sometimes jaunty, sometimes dramatic music.  And American Joseph Cotten stepped in when Vincent Price turned down the pivotal role of Alfred Becker.  Dan and Vicky discuss the 1972 campy Italian horror film along with lots of recently seen like Hamilton on Disney+; docs I'll Be Gone in the Dark and Scream, Queen; films Eurovision Song Contest, Blow Up, The Yakuza, The Alphabet Murders, Come to Daddy and The Hunt.   Listen to Hot Date 109: Baron Blood and leave us some feedback.  Check out www.hotdatepod.com.

Giant-Sized Finale! In their last, harrowing trip into the House of Franklin-Stein (for this year anyway), Chris and Cindy discuss 1943's The Return of the Vampire starring Bela Lugosi as a vampire that is NOT Dracula. Seriously, he's not. We mean it! In war-torn London, vampire Armand Tesla rises from his tomb to exact his revenge on those who vanquished him. Along the way we meet his werewolf minion, and even more unbelievable for a 1940s horror film, a strong female protagonist! How does this Columbia release stack up to the fabled Universal Monster series? The answer may surprise you!   Then, the Super Mates end the comic portions of the series in style, by taking a fond look at Captain America # 253 and 254 by Roger Stern, John Byrne, and Joe Rubenstein! The Star-Spangled Avenger answers the call of a friend and need…his old Invaders teammate, Union Jack! The aged hero is convinced a series of grisly murders are the work of his vampiric brother, Baron Blood! What follows is a timeless classic, with one of the most shocking endings of the Bronze Age of comics!   Listen on!   Rob Kelly and Chris discuss Spidey vs. the Man-Wolf and Dracula over at the Power Records Podcast! http://firestormfan.com/audio/Power%20Records%20Podcast%20Episode%2011.mp3   Rob and Chris attend the Mad Monster Party over at the Film and Water Podcast: http://firestormfan.com/audio/Film%20and%20Water%20Podcast%20Episode%2011.mp3     Let us know what you think!
