Not sure how to start talking to your kids about money? One mom shares how she's teaching her teens about budgets, investing, giving, and more! Guiding Your Teens with Finances One of parenthood's joys (and responsibilities) is guiding your kids and teens into adulthood. We all want them to live happy and meaningful lives.  That's a huge goal to work towards, and it takes all 18 years (and then some!) to build them up.  One essential skill set they need to get a handle on is their finances. We know money isn't the goal, but it is a handy tool to help them take care of their bills, save up for big goals, and yes, have a bit of fun.  The huge question, however, is where do we start? How do we teach our kids, especially teens, about finances? How do we show them the ropes of budgeting, investing, and giving? How can we help them feel comfortable with handling finances and make wise choices?  This is why I'm glad Aja, creator of Principles of Increase and author of How to Talk Money With Our Daughters. She's also a mom of two teens.  In this episode, we get into: When to begin those conversations and ways you can make them meaningful and interesting Introducing teens to investing whether it's funds or real estate Involving them with the finances so they'll be prepared and confident with their skills Let's get started!  Resources to Teach Your Kids about Money If you're looking for ideas and resources to prepare your kids to be money-savvy, here are some to check out! Kids and Money: How to Teach Them About Bank and Investing Accounts

Want to help your kids get comfortable and confident with managing their money? Today we'll talk about giving them a head start by opening up bank and investing accounts with them! Helping Your Teen Open a Bank Account and Invest Do you remember your first bank account? I think I was in 6th grade and there was a program with a local bank where they would come in every two weeks or so and open up a school branch in the library.  Different grades were assigned a time slot and if your parents had opened an account for you, you could go in to deposit, withdraw, or just check the balance.  It was super basic, but let me tell you, everyone was excited. Why? Because it was their money.  Later when I started working, my mom and I went to her credit union – she's a teacher – and I opened my checking account.  Each paycheck, I set aside something for savings, something for my checking, and kept the rest for fun.  These early lessons didn't involve a ton of money or anything complicated, but they gave me confidence when it came to finances.  Earlier this year we had an episode about essential financial lessons to pass on to your kids.  This time I want to move a bit forward from those initial conversations to giving them tools to practice their financial skills such as having a bank and investing account.  Today we'll dive into how to help your kids become financially savvy. In this episode, we'll dive into: Why your kid should have a bank account and when to get them started Three types of accounts you can use to help your kid get started with investing Essential investment lessons to pass on Hope you enjoy it! Today we'll look at how you can teach your kids to be financially savvy!  Teaching Your Kids About Money One of our responsibilities as parents is to teach our kids essential skills they need and finances is part of that.  Good or bad, if you look at how you handle finances, you'll probably see the impact your own parents had on you.  Our example is a crucial part of teaching them, but we also need to consider those conversations we have with our kids.  What lessons are passing on to them? How can we guide them to not just be financially savvy, but also thoughtful with how they use their money?  It's something we talk about from time to time. Our two daughters are now ten and seven. They've had their allowance for a few years and overall they're getting the hang of it.  Now we're trying to figure out how to approach other financial topics like budgets and investing in a way that's engaging to them.  Thankfully there's some really good resources out there that can make those conversations easier.  In this episode, we'll get into: Creating a flexible game plan of topics and when you want to introduce them to your kids Discuss some of the big questions parents have about allowances How to introduce them to the family budget There's a lot to cover, so let's get started!  Resources to Teach Your Kids about Money If you're looking for ideas and resources to prepare your kids to be money-savvy, here are some to check out!  Best Budget and Money Apps: Personal Capital, Tiller, Mint Grab Your Copy: Jumpstart Your Marriage and Your Money How to Teach Your Kids About Money (w/o Being Boring!) Being Boring, a single by Pet Shop Boys is 30 years old today (12 November 2020). It's one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite pop groups and as such I felt I needed to mark the occasion. This podcast complements a Pop Art feature I wrote for Classic Pop magazine about the photography of The Douglas Brothers published in March 2018. The Douglas Brothers photography was used on the cover designs for the single, with graphic design by regular Pet Shop Boys creative collaborator, Mark Farrow. Neil Tennant has spoken in detail about what Being Boring is about and this is included in the podcast, but to quote from his book, One hundred lyrics and a poem: "An autobiographical elegy for my best friend from Newcastle whom I'd known since we were teenagers; he died in 1989 aged only thirty-four... The title was inspired by a Japanese review  which said we were 'being boring'. I liked the bouncy rhythm of this phrase and confronting the criticism  of our famously deadpan presentation. The teenage party referred to in the first verse was in July 1974 (actually, I had just ceased being a teenager) and the invitation quoted Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of Scott Fitzgerald, from an article, 'Eulogy on the Flapper', published in Metropolitan magazine in 1922: 'She was never bored mainly because she was never boring.' In the second verse I leave Newcastle on the train to study in London wearing platform shoes (it was 1972) and assuming I would never move back. In the third verse I am a Pet Shop Boy recording in Munich, while back in London my friend has died and other friends are ill."

What have I done to deserve this? What are we going to do about the rich? I don’t know what you want but I can’t give it to you – musings we should all be considering, or Pet Shop Boys song titles? Both! We’re well into Cycle 4, and for a supposed queer music podcast we took our sweet time getting to this iconic duo. Nevertheless, here we are with the PSBs, an act who have shaped many of the artists we know and love, queer or not, and continue to pump out their own unique brand of pop to this today. This episode, we catch them still cruising through their ‘Imperial Phase’ with their 1990 masterpiece, Behaviour. Released after three consecutive commercial successes, Behaviour was their first chart blip but has stood the test of time as Pet Shop Boy excellence – glorious pop medleys paired alongside vivid storytelling, laced with biting wit. We continue to record remotely, separated by 600 kilometres no less, so bear with us on any technical bumps, but otherwise, we hope you enjoy. Richard Coles and Aasmah Mir are joined by the British crime writer Martina Cole, known to her fans as the Queen of Crime, with twenty-four novels to her name, fifteen of which have been No.1 bestsellers and translated into twenty-nine languages. Thomas Harding ran a local newspaper in West Virginia before returning to the UK to research his family history, which in one direction took him to his uncle Hanns, a Nazi hunter who tracked down the Auschwitz commandant, Rudolf Hoess. Now he has turned his attention to the other half of his family, who created the famous Lyons Corner Houses. Emily Chung co-founded, with her sister Amy, the pop-up Rangoon Sisters Burmese Supper Club between their shifts as doctors in the NHS. Justin Hawkins was a jingle writer and jobbing musician before forming rock band The Darkness. They had chart success with hits including I Believe in a Thing Called Love and Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End) before the band disbanded in 2006. Five years later they reunited and have just released a new album Easter is Cancelled. Author and LGBT activist Armistead Maupin shares his Inheritance Tracks - Every Time We Say Goodbye by Cole Porter and sung by Ella Fitzgerald and Being Boring by Pet Shop Boys. He was stirring up something magical in the kitchen while I queued up a mega-mix of PSB tracks I'd crafted back in 2007. The beats and melodies filled the room, serving as a reminder of the duo's indelible mark on synth-pop, new wave, and dance music across generations. Let's be honest; blending songs from different decades, each with its own BPM and style, is no easy feat. But that's what makes Pet Shop Boys unique—their ability to transcend time and genre. Crafting this mega-mix was akin to maneuvering through a musical obstacle course, which is why I leaned on 'Hot Tracks' and 'Razormaid' mixes to give the set a more club-friendly vibe. As we sat back and savored our dinner and drinks, the track "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)" filled the room, a poignant reminder of the band's early dalliances with ironic social commentary. Next up was "Love Comes Quickly," a dance mix capturing the ephemeral nature of affection. Then, "West End Girls," a Sasha remix offering, took us back to the heart of 1980s London. The set continued to evolve with one of my favorite songs from their catalog like "Being Boring," paying homage to times gone by, and "Go West," which carried the unmistakable echoes of a world moving towards new beginnings. Then again, it was more of patronage to the gay mecca Key West in South Florida or even San Francisco — take your pick. The Pet Shop Boys—Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe—formed in London in 1981. They burst onto the scene with their debut album "Please" and never looked back. Over the years, their lyrical genius and pioneering electronic beats have resonated with diverse audiences, earning them Brit Awards, a devoted fan base, and even a place in theatrical productions. I'm sure everyone has their stories about where they were, what they were doing or even their first gay kiss while listening to PSB.  I'm not sure where I read this, but several years ago I came across an article about ten ways to tell if your boyfriend is gay.  One of the things on the list is if his CD collection had Madonna's “Immaculate Collection”, Erasure's “Pop! 20 Hits” or “Discography: The Complete Singles Collection” by the dynamic duo. So whether you're listening to "Paninaro '95" for its haunting beats or "New York City Boy" for its disco-fueled tempo, each song offers a window into the rich tapestry of human emotion. The genius of the Pet Shop Boys lies not just in their ability to craft hits, but in their knack for capturing the zeitgeist,
