Dr Cath Bishop talks in this latest CAL Podcast episode about mastery mindset and letting go of fixed short-term goals. A former international rower, diplomat and now leadership consultant Cath is used to high-performance environments and uses these experiences to provide her view on leadership, purpose and how to define one's role in the team. As an Olympic silver medallist, it is interesting to hear Cath's openness to talk about feelings of failure in sport and the mindset shift that allowed her to go on to achieve her goals. Cath discusses the importance of not always focusing on finite goals, instead encouraging us to look at what we have learned from the process and how to link that learning into the next mission or goal. She emphasises how vital it is to give individuals the space, resources and education to nurture talent, in order to maximise their potential within high performing teams. A great interview with someone who has experienced high-performance culture in many different environments focusing on the importance of leadership and how we can cultivate a new attitude to the meaning of success.

Podcast Episode 139 Greg Wamhoff's not worried about his next sale because his residential construction business in Tomball, Texas, has a self-sustaining sales engine: their finished work. Nine of every ten clients come referred to his company, Wamhoff Design|Build. In this episode of “The Building Code,” Zach and Charley learn how Greg turned a telephone and the leads on a dry erase board into an outfit finishing 50 custom homes a year. Referrals power Greg's business, and he's sharing his keys to setting up tomorrow's deal on today's job site. WHAT HAS BEING A REFERRAL-BASED BUSINESS LOOKED LIKE AT YOUR COMPANY? “Until a year or two ago, we didn't put any effort on social marketing or social media. And to that point, we have never done paid marketing. We never did it. And I think if you're doing business right, especially in a growing market like Texas, you shouldn't have to. Right? But I would say our referral hovers right around 90% plus or minus. Really rare we get a project that comes from another source like social media or some other avenue where somebody sees us. I joked forever in our company, we didn't even put signs out when we were doing projects. If somebody wants me, they're going to go knock on that guy's door and say, ‘Hey, you're doing a project. Who's doing it?' Right? So, brand awareness is, I guess, for some companies it's important. Ours is more relational capital. Relationships are what's important for us.” WHAT'S THE BEST ADVICE YOU RECEIVED ON BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS? “An early mentor of mine one time said to me that if you just hired great people, your business will take care of itself. And I truly believe that today still. It's really about the people. Over time, as we kind of started putting a few people together to build the company, it centered around that same feeling I had the first time, which is I love our customers. I care about our customers, and we want to do a great job for them. And I think that was evident through some of the first relationships and employees we had, just shared that common thread. And that's what really motivated us and drove us into this business LINKS AND MORE Related content: Read more about Wamhoff Design|Build's success here, and don't forget to check out the tree farmer Greg mentioned. Face it, if you could have great conversations with your spouse you might not be facing divorce or separation. So often, by the time that couples reach the point of divorce, they have long since stopped communicating effectively and often have actually established toxic patterns in how they speak to each other that are ultimately self-defeating. Button pushing, blaming and other communication rabbit holes sabotage the ability to have successful conversations. My guest this week, Liz Becker is, among her many skills, an expert communications coach as well as a noted divorce professional, so she knows just how important it is to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with your spouse during, and after, the divorce process. This is an opportunity to change those negative patterns and habits and start to have conversations together that move you forward into a new future. Liz will walk you through the 5 essential tips for setting yourself up for a successful conversation, during your divorce and in your life! More About Liz Becker: Liz Becker is the President and Co-founder of the National Association of Divorce Professionals and Creator of the CDS™ Program. Liz is also a Licensed NLP Master Practitioner, Communications Skills Coach & Trainer, and has more than a decade experience in working with both divorcing clients and the professionals who serve them. Having worked in the divorce industry for many years, she has a keen sense in detecting specific issues that create obstacles for all parties involved in the process. Whether she was conducting NLP certification trainings, co-parenting workshops, or speaking at conferences, Liz has always found great reward in educating people how to communicate more effectively and achieve positive change in their lives, both personally and professionally. What are our teams working on? What features are coming up and how will they benefit our users? What data and research are being collected behind the scenes? Tune in as we take a look inside Buildertrend. What happened inside Buildertrend in 2021? ***Trigger Warning: This episode contains graphic discussion about sex crimes against children and we use appropriate anatomical terms and language throughout the episode. *** Sadly, in the world we live in today, talking with your kids about sex and how babies are made isn't the most difficult conversation you need to have with them. With the reality of sex crimes against children, and in a world where there are untold predators that prey on the most vulnerable, parents must also warn and prepare their children for potential dangers that can lurk most anywhere. This week's guest, veteran sex crimes prosecutor, Stacey Honowitz, has had a front row seat for decades and has worked tirelessly to convict those who violate our children. She has literally seen it all, including that fact that many parents don't have those difficult talks with their kids about the dangers that lurk out there. She knows how necessary it is to talk with your kids about this and she wants you to know as well. In fact, she has coined the term "parental malpractice" for the failure to prepare your kids for the potential situation where someone touches them improperly or worse. Stacey shares some true crime details in this episode, as well as specifics on what you need to tell your kids. She is also the author of three books, The Bully at School is Really Uncool, Genius With a Penis, Don't Touch and My Privates are Private, all designed to help you have those necessary conversations with your children. Don't commit parental malpractice. Listen to this episode and help your kids stay safe! SPECIAL BOOK GIVEAWAY! We are giving away one copy of each of Stacey's three books this week. If you would like to be a winner, simply share the BOOK GIVEAWAY post on Instagram to your Stories (you can find it on the @susanguthrie, @divorceandbeyond or @staceybhonowitz accounts) AND tag all three accounts! When your closet is full, it's a challenge to find anything and overwhelming to think about clearing it out. When your mind is full with an idea or belief it's hard to see any other way to be or any other path that can be taken. That's a painful place to be and a place we often put ourselves in when we believe there's only one way for an experience to go. It's where we get stuck when we believe life isn't happening in the right way or the fairway. And it's why you need to stop yourself sometimes and create enough space to stop creating more suffering than you need to endure.
Construction's never been easy. But in 2022, the job duties have expanded well-beyond building. On this episode of “The Building Code,” Zach and Charley preview an insightful panel at next week's International Builders' Show with industry pros Joe Christensen of Cardinal Crest Homes and Katie Kath of Jkath Design Build + Reinvent. Joe and Katie each share how they define the modern-day builder, the subject of an IBS 2022 panel they're leading along with Buildertrend CEO Dan Houghton and Nick Schiffer of NS Builders Feb. 8 in Orlando, Florida. Plus, listen in to hear about Katie's first IBS experience and about a surprise Joe found during a client walkthrough that tested his resolve. WHAT DEFINES THE MODERN-DAY BUILDER? Katie: “In terms of what is a modern-day builder for me, that goes back to our brand. So for me, I feel like I am my client. Nine out of 10 clients are me in the sense of sort of demographic, where we are in our life. We have kids, we like to cook. We want an open floor plan. How many people have the ability and the want to take down these major projects, which is such a huge disruption in life? But it's really no different than when you go to get a cup of coffee. They want the same thing from their build team. They want convenience. They want communication. They want a brand, period. So how are we creating a brand?” WHAT MAKES THE MODERN-DAY BUILDER DIFFERENT FROM THE TRADITIONAL BUILDER? Joe: “I always think is like it's our jobs in this industry to be the professionals. It's our job to, to, to steady the waters because people don't know like it's a messy process…It's a messy business. And I think the modern-day builder, the mountain that we have to climb is how do we make it a customer service-orientated business —not get railroaded by the clients, I'm not saying that. I'm just saying, ‘How do we calm the waters, be process systemized so it can be a fun experience at the end?'” LINKS AND MORE Related content: Attending IBS 2022? Meet Veronica. Welp, it's happened. We're flummoxed. Veronica has made us believers in the one-sheet strategic plan. Seriously! Hectic building conditions in 2021 forced builders to rewrite their plans on the fly as they adapted to historic materials scarcity and labor shortages. So how should they prepare for profit and growth in 2022 and beyond? In this episode of “The Building Code,” Zach and Charley learn the best construction goal-setting strategies from Doug Howard of Remodelers Advantage. Doug shares how remodelers and home builders can approach scaling and the ways construction software like Buildertrend can bring goals into reach. HOW WILL THE TURBULENT MARKET AFFECT MY ABILITY TO REACH MY GOALS? “What I really try to do is get folks to think about growth in terms of a five-year plan. I always want to know where people want to be five years out. Even though people say, ‘Well, how can you do that in the crazy world we live in,' I will tell you the people that had five-year plans as they were going through COVID, they at least knew how far off track they were. It was a really good rudder to bring them back in line.” HOW CAN FOCUSING ON QUARTERLY METRICS HELP BUILDERS REACH THEIR FIVE-YEAR GOALS? “We can look at what's going to drive production capacity. ‘Hey, we need another small job,' or ‘we're going to be finishing a big job – we need another one to start in May.' It really translates all these numbers into something actionable, but the really cool thing about it is when someone grows at that pace, and each of those quarters has an escalation, when they get to the fourth quarter, all they really need to do is maintain that level for the next year and they're going to go up in revenue again. They're doing it in a very controlled and a very profitable way, as opposed to, ‘We've sold a bunch, let's go build a bunch. Let's go sell a bunch more – let's try to fit it in.'" Fresh off her visits with Good Morning America and The Today Show (among others), America's Favorite Dating Expert, Bela Gandhi, stops in to chat with Susan Guthrie about the very human drama of falling in love with the wrong person and how we can "fix our picker" to find a lasting love. We have talked about the fact that Peak Dating Season is ongoing in January each year but for many people all that dating leads to making poor choices in partners, sometimes over and over again. In fact, although we may think that we would select better spouses after going through a divorce, in reality, with each subsequent marriage, the chances of divorce greatly increase. The numbers break down like this: 41% of first marriages end in divorce. 60% of second marriages end in divorce. 73% of third marriages end in divorce. So why do we continue to make poor choices in mates and much more importantly, HOW DO WE FIX OUR PICKER? Bela Gandhi, the Founder of Smart Dating Academy knows and she shares it ALL. The red flags vs. the green flags and why we ignore them both. The fact that we are hard-wired for the hormone rush but that oxytocin glow can derail our real desires, and bottom line, how to identify the elevator people in your life so that you can find the right one for your love life! It's all here and trust us, when you are done listening to this episode, you WILL be psychotically optimistic about your chances of find real and lasting love too! If you haven't got a New Year's resolution to work on yet - I've got one for you - it's tackling clutter! This episode begins with some thoughts about what clutter does to your mental health and how you can fix it. http://www.timetoorganize.com/wp-content/uploads/realsimple-article.pdf There is something called “lifestyle medicine.” It is the idea that what you eat, how you exercise and generally how you live your life will affect your health - for better or worse. That likely comes as no surprise to you, but you probably think the effects are minimal. And you would be wrong. For decades Dr. Dean Ornish has been researching lifestyle medicine and found that small changes in how you live ( actually just 4 changes) can have a huge impact on your health and longevity and even reverse chronic illness. The research is impressive, and the results are compelling. Listen as he discusses how you can make these changes and quickly see real improvement. Dr. Ornish is author of the book UnDo It! : How Simple Lifestyle Changes Can Reverse Most Chronic Diseases (https://amzn.to/3qYaSB7). Numbers are sometimes hard to grasp. For instance, 1 million seconds equals 12 days. So how long is 1 billion seconds? You will have to listen to this episode to find out but I bet your guess is way off! Since we use numbers every single day, it just might help to find ways to better understand and explain them as well as make them memorable. Joining me with some great insight into this is Chip Health. Chip teaches at Stanford, has authored several books and his latest is Making Numbers Count (https://amzn.to/3t3AMpG). Listen as chip makes numbers come alive! Just about every food has an expiration date or “sell by” date or “best if used by” date on it. But in some cases they can be very misleading. A lot of foods will last a long time past the “sell by” date. You may be throwing away food that is perfectly fine. Listen and I will give you foods you can likely hang on to a little longer. https://www.webmd.com/diet/features/do-food-expiration-dates-matter#1 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Construction software has helped thousands of builders optimize their operations, and it's also powering life-changing charity right in Buildertrend's backyard. On 2022's first episode of “The Building Code,” Lynette Farhart of Project Houseworks tells Zach and Charley all about the Omaha nonprofit's mission to help seniors with free home repairs. Lynette describes how the Buildertrend helped them better serve seniors and the benefits of the Estimate and Time Clock features for her team's fundraising. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOUR TEAM NEEDED PROJECT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE? “We were serving more, and the projects were getting really big. We're trying to manage all of this on Word documents and spreadsheets. And I think it was pivotal when someone accidentally messed up one of our spreadsheets and saved it. And all of our data was completely messed up. And it was like, "Okay, we can't do that anymore." Because I think what's important to know is that our funding comes a lot from grants, and we have deliverables on those grants. And so, if we told a donor through the grant process that we're going to serve X amount of people, we've got to report that we did that work. So trying to manage our data with spreadsheets just didn't make sense for us anymore” HOW ELSE DOES BUILDERTREND HELP YOU WIN OVER DONORS? “Some of our grants are reimbursable, which means we have to do all of the work, and then we ask for funding. So we have really accurate reports to submit. And that just earns the trust of our donors knowing that we're keeping such good records on everything that we do.” LINKS AND MORE Related content: Read more about their Buildertrend story here. In this episode, Top Family Law Attorney, Susan Guthrie speaks with friend and host of The Divorce Survival Guide Podcast, Kate Anthony about the right way to tell your spouse that you have decided to divorce. It is January 3rd, 2022, the first Monday in the New Year and that means that it is D-Day (Divorce Day) the day that more people reach out to divorce attorneys and other divorce professionals than any other day of the year. This kicks off what we in the industry call Divorce Month (January) and Divorce Season (January - March) because traditionally, this is when people, those who have been considering divorce for a long time or those who make a quick decision, find themselves pulling the trigger and moving forward. The decision to divorce is hard, and can take a long time, but the next step, telling your spouse, is one of the most critical steps in the process and it is imperative to do it right! Kate Anthony, Susan's guru on all things communication, joins her for this episode to help you plan that conversation so that you start things off the best way possible. Trust us, this is truly one of the most important conversations that you will ever have and it pays to put time and effort into doing it the best way possible so that you can, as Kate says in the episode, put your head on the pillow that night knowing you did your best. They say that you should start as you mean to go and that is never more true than when starting a divorce. How you tell your spouse, will set the stage for how your divorce will unfold and in many ways, how you will continue into your BEYOND so take the time and do it right! *********************************************** About this week's special guest: KATE ANTHONY: Kate Anthony is the host of the critically acclaimed podcast The Divorce Survival Guide Podcast and the creator of the groundbreaking online coaching program, Should I Stay or Should I Go? which helps women make the most difficult decision of their lives using coaching tools, relationship education, geeky neuroscience, community support, and deep self-work. Kate empowers women to find their strength, passion, and confidence even in the most disempowering of circumstances and helps them move forward with concrete plans set on a solid foundation, putting their children at the center (not in the middle) of all their decisions. In addition to her online programs, Kate works privately with clients all over the world. Kate lives in Los Angeles with her teenage son (whom she lovingly co-parents with her ex-husband), their two dogs, and a handful of fish. Why I Don't Think You Have Imposter Syndrome Stop saying you have imposter syndrome. To which you might say, “But Amy...I do have imposter syndrome. I can't get past this notion of ‘Who am I to start a business' or ‘Who am I to teach on my topic?'” Boy, do I hear you. I've been there a thousand times. But I also want to challenge you on how that mindset is most likely working against you...and I'm doing just that on this episode. In this episode, I want to talk to you about rethinking what you've always labeled as imposter syndrome. I want to lean into what might actually be a strength underneath all that fretting. And I want to challenge you in an area that you're probably selling yourself short. My friend, borrow as much courage as you need from me -- and this episode -- to put imposter syndrome to bed for good in your life and step fully into what you've always been called to accomplish in this world. I believe in you with my whole heart! Here's a glance at this episode... Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts "I love Amy and Online Marketing Made Easy."
