Walter Riley first got involved with political organizing when he was a 12-year-old boy protesting against Jim Crow-era segregation laws in North Carolina. Since then, he hosted an event with Malcolm X, managed a campaign for the Black Panther Party, helped lead the struggle for ethnic studies, and participated in countless political actions. His new book, “Civil Rights and Structural Attacks,” co-authored with Jesse Strauss, shares lessons from a lifetime of movement-building. The book, which features a foreword from Walter's son, the revolutionary rapper and director Boots Riley, looks back at the anti-apartheid movement, the Oscar Grant uprising, and many other rebellious moments to analyze the victories and shortcomings of these struggles. In this episode, which was recorded in front of a live audience at Local Economy in Oakland, Walter also discusses strategies for overcoming sectarianism and the legacies of local political figures including Jerry Brown, Ron Dellums, and Jean Quan. In which Kid 1 joins me in reviewing I LOVE BOOSTERS (2026), an  absurdist crime comedy from writer/director Boots Riley.  A struggling aspiring designer named Corvette (Keke Palmer) leads a crew of shoplifters known as "The Velvet Gang" who steal high-end fashion to redistribute it to their community at a discount.  Their radical "fashion-forward philanthropy" escalates into a surreal, high-stakes conflict when Corvette decides to target the haughty billionaire fashion mogul Christie Smith (Demi Moore) after discovering the designer has stolen one of her personal creations.  As their quest for justice descends into chaos involving bizarre technology and a battle against corporate exploitation, the group must navigate a rapidly unraveling reality to challenge the systemic inequality of the fashion industry.  The film clocks in at 1 h 53 m, is rated R and is currently in theaters - go check it out.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.#ILoveBoosters #BootsRiley #KekePalmer #Corvette #NaomiAckie #Sade #TaylourPaige #Mariah #PoppyLiu #Jianhu #EizaGonzález #Violeta #DemiMoore #ChristieSmith #RachelWalters #Stevie #DonCheadle #DrJack #LaKeithStanfield #PinkyRingGuy #AlanZ #LiPan #WillPoulter #Grayson Adventure #Comedy #Crime #Drama #SciFi #Thriller #NewRelease #InTheaters  #FridayFamilyFilmNightOpening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library

Fugitives are on the run—not free yet, they are running and running hard…running toward freedom. Refugees have escaped war or catastrophic climate collapse or extreme social disintegration, and forced to flee their homes, compelled to confront a fresh landscape, they invent new ways of living, learning, loving, and being—on the run. Walter Riley is a long-distance runner—he's been in the mix and on the move for eight decades. A refugee from the Jim Crow South where as a teenager he was a renowned organizer and activist, and at 19 moderated a conversation with Malcolm X in Durham, NC, Walter Riley is a civil rights attorney in Oakland, California, winner of the National Lawyers Guild's Champion of Justice Award, and a founder of Haiti Emergency Relief (visit Episode #38 where Walter is in conversation about Haiti with our Beloved late comrade Malik Alim). Walter Riley is a fugitive from our soul-crushing racial capitalist system, and a powerful revolutionary thinker and strategist. His son Boots Riley says that his dad teaches us that “we must participate, we must engage, we must seek to change the world.” In motion and in action we will develop our thinking and figure out with more clarity “how to fight, how to live, how to love…” Arm-in-arm, shoulder-to-shoulder, heart-to-heart, Walter Riley returns to “Under the Tree” for a discussion of movement-building in this political moment as well as his new book (with Jesse Strauss and a Foreword by Boots), Civil Rights and Structural Attacks.

On a new episode of The Rolling Stone interview, writer CT Jones sits down with I Love Boosters star Keke Palmer as the actress retraces her history from child-star to two-time Emmy Award winning actress and discusses her dreams about a legacy that doesn't let pressure and stress get the best of her. At 32 years old, Palmer has spent more years as her family's main breadwinner than not, after breaking out in Hollywood at 11-years-old with her lead role in the inspirational Spelling Bee film Akeelah and the Bee. Now, she holds a variety of titles all at the same time, singer, host, actress, and most importantly, single mother to her three-year-old son Leodis. Her latest film is Boots Riley's I Love Booster, a radical, anticapitalist film about a down-on-her-luck fashion designer who “boosts” clothes from retailers with the help of her stylishly dressed entourage, the Velvet Gang. Palmer discusses how the themes of labor, creativity, and power show up on screen and in her own life — and how she's redefining what success can look like. Learn more about your ad choices. On this week's episode, Nathan, Chris, and Gita bid farewell to the Aftermath Twitch channel—at least, in terms of using it to record the podcast—and turn their sights toward a pre-recorded, more-thoroughly-edited future (coming soon!). We also discuss Valve's decision to massively increase the Steam Deck's price thanks to “global logistical challenges” (read: AI and an incredibly stupid war) and how what seems to be the end of affordable consumer hardware might impact the games industry five or ten years down the line. Then we talk about the latest Boots Riley movie, I Love Boosters, and how intensely good it is by virtue of embracing a singular vision—the kind film industry outsiders rarely get the opportunity to put on screen these days. After that, we dive into the weeds of what it means to play and enjoy a game—in this case, Zero Parades: For Dead Spies—despite thorny origins. Lastly, Gita and Nathan debate the merits of two popular bands, Paramore and Sleep Token, even though both of their opinions are wrong.Credits- Hosts: Chris Person, Gita Jackson, and Luke Plunkett- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. A group of shoplifters (Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, Naomi Ackie) take aim at a ruthless fashion maven (Oscar-nominee Demi Moore) by stealing her clothes and reselling them at a lower price, partially out of revenge for her stealing several of their fashion designs.  This is the latest opus from writer/director Boots Riley (Sorry To Bother You) and that overall description doesn't really do it justice to the many crazy turns which this sci-fi/corporate satire takes.  The stacked cast also includes Lakeith Stanfield, Eiza Gonzalez, Poppy Liu, Will Poulter, and Don Cheadle.  Get ready for a wild, genre-defying ride!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us Fan MailSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Moving far beyond the typical heist tropes, the movie focuses on a crew of boosters targeting the ultra-luxury fashion industry — transforming a criminal enterprise into a dangerous game of survival and status. We're breaking down the film's visual language and how it uses a neon-soaked palette to mirror the glossy world its characters are trying to infiltrate. We also explore the underlying themes of class anxiety and corporate greed, tracking how Riley's storytelling here draws a direct line back to his early musical days with The Coup. Join us as we dissect the performances, the music, and the sharp cultural critique that makes this one of the most refreshing thrillers we've seen in a minute.

It's a long holiday weekend, so an extra-long episode of our Breakfast Al Day podcast seems fitting. Here's what we reviewed as we head into Memorial Day: I LOVE BOOSTERS. Boots Riley is back with another maximalist, absurdist comedy. He follows up 2018's "Sorry to Bother You" with the story of a group of women who steal designer clothes and sell them at discount prices. Starring Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, Naomi Ackie and Demi Moore. In theaters. TUNER. The best new movie of the week. Oscar-winning documentarian Daniel Roher ("Navalny") makes his narrative feature debut with the story of a New York piano tuner (Leo Woodall) who uses his super-sensitive hearing to work as a safecracker on the side. Co-starring Dustin Hoffman and Havana Rose Liu. In limited release now, opening nationwide May 29. IS GOD IS. We got a ton of requests to catch up with this stylish Southern thriller from last week, and we're so glad we did. Writer-director Aleshea Harris adapts her stage play about twins who go on a cross-country road trip of revenge against their father, who tried to kill their mother. Kara Young and Mallori Johnson are both tremendous. This is a must-see. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! We're back with lots to discuss, including "The Mandalorian and Grogu," "The Boys" series finale, the last Stephen Colbert show, Tom Hardy getting fired from "MobLand," the Cannes Film Festival and more. Boots Riley's new film is called ‘I Love Boosters,' and it stars Keke Palmer as the leader of a crew of women shoplifters in the Bay Area who steal from luxury stores and sell the goods cheap to people who can't afford retail. 20 years before the movie, Riley wrote a song by the same name with his hip-hop group The Coup. The song is a love letter to shoplifters, or boosters, as they're called.
