In 2026, Boots Riley has returned to the big screen with his wild new crime comedy I Love Boosters. The movie follows a group of professional shoplifters who are targeting a fashion mogul. The film stars Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, Poppy Liu, Eiza Gonzalez, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter, Don Cheadle, and Demi Moore. It's a chaotic capitalist critique that left us with much to discuss!

In the early phases working the hour on his national tour, The Darkest Hour was well received by countless audience members who told Nato after shows that they were feeling hopeful for the first time since Trump's inauguration. Said Nato, "there is comedy of escapism, but this is whatever is the opposite of that." Nato starred along with W. Kamau Bell and Janine Brito in the streaming series Laughter Against the Machine on Means.tv, the first worker-owned post-capitalist streaming platform. Walter Riley first got involved with political organizing when he was a 12-year-old boy protesting against Jim Crow-era segregation laws in North Carolina. Since then, he hosted an event with Malcolm X, managed a campaign for the Black Panther Party, helped lead the struggle for ethnic studies, and participated in countless political actions. His new book, “Civil Rights and Structural Attacks,” co-authored with Jesse Strauss, shares lessons from a lifetime of movement-building. The book, which features a foreword from Walter's son, the revolutionary rapper and director Boots Riley, looks back at the anti-apartheid movement, the Oscar Grant uprising, and many other rebellious moments to analyze the victories and shortcomings of these struggles. In this episode, which was recorded in front of a live audience at Local Economy in Oakland, Walter also discusses strategies for overcoming sectarianism and the legacies of local political figures including Jerry Brown, Ron Dellums, and Jean Quan. A refugee from the Jim Crow South where as a teenager he was a renowned organizer and activist, and at 19 moderated a conversation with Malcolm X in Durham, NC, Walter Riley is a civil rights attorney in Oakland, California, winner of the National Lawyers Guild's Champion of Justice Award, and a founder of Haiti Emergency Relief (visit Episode #38 where Walter is in conversation about Haiti with our Beloved late comrade Malik Alim). Walter Riley is a fugitive from our soul-crushing racial capitalist system, and a powerful revolutionary thinker and strategist. Boots Riley's new film is called ‘I Love Boosters,' and it stars Keke Palmer as the leader of a crew of women shoplifters in the Bay Area who steal from luxury stores and sell the goods cheap to people who can't afford retail. 20 years before the movie, Riley wrote a song by the same name with his hip-hop group The Coup. The song is a love letter to shoplifters, or boosters, as they're called. Riley talks with Tonya Mosley about why his music, shows, and films -- including the 2018 movie ‘Sorry To Bother You' -- continue to explore the contradictions that capitalism produces.
