In this ClimateGenn episode I am speaking with Professor Raymond Pierrehumbert, who is the Halley Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford about solar geoengineering. He and Professor Michael E. Mann from Pennsylvania University coauthored an article in The Guardian on the 12th March 2025 titled:‘The UK's gamble on solar geoengineering is like using aspirin for cancer'."We shouldn't be actively creating harm. And the first line of defence is to actually not at least have governments and philanthropy funding these outdoor experimentations."Professor PierrehumbertHere we delve deeper into Ray's overt objections to the UK's Advanced Research & Invention Agency (ARIA). ARIA is the UK's version of the mysterious US Defence Advanced Projects Agency (DARPA). ARIA has recently allocated £45mn British Pounds to fund solar geoengineering projects including outdoor experiments.
Sometimes, the best investment ideas are the ones that either no one thinks of or the herd has left for dead. Two years ago, Australian property trusts finished the year down 20% as the fastest interest rate hiking cycle in 40 years left a scarring impact on valuations. But if you were, to paraphrase Warren Buffett, being greedy and buying up REITs in 2023 when others were fearful, you would have finished up with the second best-performing asset class in the following year. Or, consider Chinese equities, cellar-dwellers in 2021, 2022, and 2023. But as of the end of Q3 2024, they actually top the BlackRock asset class quilt. In other words, being courageous (given the right research, attractive fundamentals, and some luck) can sometimes net you the biggest returns. And of course, who could forget some of the bravest calls in all of investment folklore. Once upon a time, short US housing was a massive bet. But Michael Burry and Steve Eisman are now famous for it. Or buying British Pounds and converting them to German Deutsche Marks was a very brave way to short the British economy. But thanks to his research and his guts, George Soros made a $2 billion profit and earned the moniker "the man who broke the Bank of England." With this spirit in mind, we've asked 10 young-gun stock pickers to tell us about a contrarian investment they are backing in 2025. The stocks they mention span the full length of the consumer - from long-forgotten retailers to luxury brands known the world over. Other honourable mentions include growth stocks which may have been forgotten about in this AI-induced rally and four names linked to the commodities trade, which must say something about where fundies are finding the most value right now. To find out what the stocks are, watch the video, listen to the podcast, or read our edited transcript at this website.
The Incognito Art Show is a unique annual art show that is open to all artists. Incognito means that artists names are kept secret until after their artwork has been sold. This means that the majority of people purchase art based on what they like rather than the name and reputation of the artist. All profits are donated to organisations helping artists with disabilities, and all artworks are priced at $100 Australian Dollars (about $66 US Dollars, €61 Euros, £52 British Pounds, respectively, in May 2024). https://www.incognitoartshow.com

The taxidermist is talking with an unnamed acquaintance about the price of birds when he tells the story of a bird auction on an East India Company ship en route from India to London. Sir Mohini Padishah, a wealthy native Indian, is aboard the vessel. An unnamed caretaker, was on deck with five ostriches when one of the birds swallowed the diamond from Padishah's turban. The bird becomes mixed with the others during the resulting confusion. Word of the incident sweeps the vessel as Padishah demands the return of the diamond. He swore he would retrieve the diamond, but would not buy the birds. He demands his rights as a British Subject and plans to appeal to the British House of Lords. The passengers debate the legalities of the situation. As no barrister is aboard, much of the discussions are speculation. Padishah demands the ostriches from the caretaker who refuses because he does not own the birds. Following a stopover in Aden, Padishah offers to buy all five birds. The caretaker refuses, but tells Padishah that another passenger, Potter, made a similar offer. While in Aden, Potter wired the birds owners in London, made the offer and his answer would be waiting in Suez. He intends to kill the birds to find the diamond. Padisha raged over this and the taxidermist cursed himself for not having thought of it.The birds' owner accepted Potter's offer and Padishah wept over the sale. Potter offered to sell the birds to Padishah for more than twice the amount he paid. When Padishah balked, Potter sells the birds at auction on the ship. Interest in the auction flared when a Jewish diamond merchant assessed the diamond at three to four thousand British Pounds. After the first bird sold was slaughtered upon the deck, Potter forbid their slaughter until landfall in London. The price for each subsequent bird grew netting Potter more than one thousand Pounds. Padishah provided each new owner with his address and begged the men to mail the diamond once they found it. They rebuffed him and went their own ways.A week later, the taxidermist sees Padishah and Potter together in London. Padishah was an eminent Hindu, the diamond was indeed real, but the taxidermist doubts the bird swallowed the diamond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hmphaudiobooks/support

Rob Carver returns after his extended holiday and kicks off by taking a nostalgic look back to 1985 as the British Pounds this week hit the lowest level since that year, to reflect on how markets tend to go in cycles. We also address dynamic optimisation, whether it contributes to make more markets "tradable" and the use of "non-tradable" markets, how Rob uses correlation and clustering for his classification approach and his strategy allocating to Trend Following. Additionally, we discuss techniques for Trend Following on single stocks and determining distances in a continuous MA crossover system, strategies to increase the capacity of a Trend Following program and running multiple different systems together, and much more. ---- ---- Follow Niels on https://twitter.com/toptraderslive (Twitter), https://www.linkedin.com/in/nielskaastruplarsen (LinkedIn), https://www.youtube.com/user/toptraderslive (YouTube) or via the https://www.toptradersunplugged.com/ (TTU website). Look at what is setting up near the 52-week highs list: consumer staples like General Mills (GIS), Dollar General (DG), Post Holdings (POST), Campbel Soup (CPB); auto parts chain Autozone (AZO); online education Stride (LRN); health insurance Humana (HUM); big pharma Merk (MRK) and Eli Lilly (LLY), etc. These are not the type of stocks that lead at the beginning of a sustainable bull run. Biotech is another group showing relative strength over the last few weeks. XBI topped in February of 2021 and it fell 65% in the following 15 months. You have to go all the way to 2000-2002 to see so much destruction in so little time in a sector. The most recent drop overshadows even the Great Recession of 2007-2008. Over the past few weeks, XBI went up above its 20 and 50 dma and successfully bounced off them. It’s a bear market rally but those can be furious.Chinese stocks have been in the doghouse for a long time. The Chinese Tech ETF – KWEB topped in February of 2021 and then it fell 80% in the following 13 months. KWEB seemed to have bottomed in March of 2022 (as of right now) and since then it has made several higher lows, slowly establishing itself above its rising 20 and 50-day moving averages. KWEB is still below its 200-day moving average and the recent push higher can be considered just a bear market rally. And yet, quite a few Chinese ADRs have been acting constructively as of late: breaking out, bouncing off their rising 20-day moving averages. In the meantime, Micron missed earnings and gave a huge cut in guidance bringing down the entire semiconductor index with it. SMH closed at new 52-week lows on Friday – another sign that the market is currently more worried about a recession than inflation and supply chain constraints. The market is not always correct but it’s rarely a good idea to argue with it.MACRO: charts curtesy of all star chartsThe Euro represents almost 60% of the US Dollar Index. So if the Euro is collapsing to new 20-year lows relative to Dollars, that Index is going higher. And this is not a situation where it's just the Euro weakness that's driving things. Both Japanese Yen and British Pounds continue to remain weak.I think it will be very difficult for investors to make money from the long side of stocks or crypto this summer if the US Dollar is breaking out to new highs.A weak Euro breaking down here isn't helping the case for a bottom in stocks.A move lower in Euro would most likely mean a strong leg lower for stocks and crypto. If you're a stock market investor, either in the U.S. or around the world, I think what's happening in the US Dollar needs to be front and center.I say this because during this entire consolidation since 2016, we've seen a very strong negative correlation with stocks.Look at that first Dollar peak in late 2016 - stocks ripped from there. Then look at the next peak in 2020 - stocks ripped from there again. But during this period, when the Dollar wasn't weak, and was strong, like the past year or so, stocks have been under pressure. So I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think we're going to need to see a weak Dollar if we stand to make any sort of real money from the long side this summer. If this is a real breakout in the US Dollar and it's about to make a run towards 120, I don't believe stocks will do well in that environment.Correlations are constantly changing. And this one just might soon. But it hasn't.So we're watching the Dollar here for color on the next direction for stocks.💸Reformed Millennials - Post of The WeekThis article from Untying The Gordian Knot should help those trying to figure out where we are in the economic cycle and when might be a good time to start entering semis.“Dr. Copper has the moniker of the global economy's health as the essential metal used in almost every fixed asset investment (FAI) and manufacturing. It remains vital, although I think Nickel is now equally important in our modern-day lives as it is used in alloying, coatings, and batteries. Iron ore is significant for China's FAI and much more critical than copper in its growth.US Tech sector is 9.3% of the economy and ~ 27-28% of the S&P 500. If one sector is economically essential and broader stock market returns, it is the technology and, more specifically, the Semiconductor sub-sector.Semis has the advantage of having economic data tied to it as well as stocks and indices. What happens in Semis happens in the economy and translates to stock performance almost immediately.”🇨🇦 Important Canadian News From the Week 🇨🇦Canadian HELOC rules set to change. The change will make it so that once the loan's value exceeds 65 per cent of the home, the loan "will operate more like a traditional mortgage where the borrower makes principal and interest payments until the [loan gets back below] 65 per cent," an official told CBC News at a technical briefing. The new rules won't be in force until late 2023, but OSFI says that as things stand now, data from the Bank of Canada suggests there's $200 billion worth of HELOC that is currently outside of that 65 per cent threshold. That's out of $1.8 trillion of total housing debt.🐦 Twitter Thread of The Week 🐦My notes from the thread:Gary Gensler steadfast in opposition to certain policy decisions that Bitcoin enthusiasts have been pushing for. Steve has tried four different business banking apps in the last few years trying to find the best for all the requirements of the small business. In this episode he explains which one comes out in front and why. KEY TAKEAWAYS The business banking world for small businesses can often be archaic, clunky and backward in its approach and operation. HSBC are difficult to get an account with, it can take three months to get one. Metro required visits to the actual bank to set up and Tide was a difficult process to complete. Revolut was by far the simplest to apply for. One of the key functionalities you require as a small business is the ability to authorise other people to operate the account. HSBC allows for this but is not ideal. Tide does not even allow for this. Metro facility is long, archaic and difficult and expensive. Revolut was extraordinarily easy. Revolut allows for multiple currencies to be managed by giving you the ability to open multiple accounts under the one app. Their charges are less and their exchange rates are better. Authorisation is achieved by using biometrics within the Revolut app which speeds things up tremendously and allows for app integration. Revolut offers ‘one off' payment cards. You can create cards which you can send to staff with authorisation for one fixed payment. BEST MOMENTS ‘And without a doubt, the winner out of those four, I'm not going to hold you in suspense for the entire of this episode for you to find out what this is, the winner without a shadow of a doubt is Revolut.' ‘They (HSBC) shut down entirely over the COVID period, you could not even apply for an account. It took me three months to open an account.' ‘Its pretty painless. Its not as quick as it could be but its actually not too bad. I did that remotely, I live in Sweden and my member of staff lived in the UK.' ‘Ive got a US dollars account, I've got a Euro account, Ive got a British Pounds account.' If a person finds himself in great need of funds and he doesn't know how to obtain them, he never needs to do anything that potentially may violate halacha to get them. Hashem owns all the money in the world, and He can give it to us in the simplest and easiest ways possible. Very often, we are just being tested and we have to know we have the ability to persevere. When we do our part properly, then Hashem does His. A man named Tzvi from Modi'in Ilit who works with ba'alei teshuva , bringing them closer to Hashem, told a story which took place with one of the boys that he learned with. This boy pushed himself to learn, slowly, until eventually he registered for an all day yeshiva. He slowly developed his stamina to sit through three full sedarim . One day, his father told him that he had to go to work on Shabbat to make ends meet. He had an opportunity to earn an extra 3,000 shekel per month by working a few hours each Shabbat. The boy told his father not to do it. He said he would go to work instead to get him that 3,000 shekel. The boy asked his Rabbi if he should leave yeshiva to go work to save his father from going on Shabbat. They asked the question to a Gadol who said, “Absolutely.” After this boy struggled so mightily to learn Torah, he now had to give it up to go to work. But he didn't ask any questions, all he wanted to do was the will of Hashem. He got a job in a men's retail clothing store and he continued dressing there as he did in yeshiva. One evening, someone approached him, seeing that he was a yeshiva boy, and said, “Tell me young man, why is such a sweet, gentle boy like you sitting here instead of learning in yeshiva.” The boy told him the story. The man then said to him, “I am going to give you 30,000 shekel as a loan. If you ever get the money to pay me back, then do so. But if you don't, then it's a gift. Please, go back to your yeshiva now.” This boy was being tested and he passed. Once he no longer needed that test, Hashem sent him the money in the simplest way. Hashem has many messengers and an infinite number of ways of sending people money. Rabbi Elimelech Biderman told a story about a Rabbi who lives in London. Before Pesach this year, the Rabbi realized one day that he misplaced 1200 British Pounds, which is equivalent to about $1500. He needed that money for his Pesach expenses as well as the rent for his apartment. At first he panicked, but then his emunah kicked in. He turned to Hashem like a son to a father, asking his daddy for help in obtaining the money he needed so badly. Astonishingly, a minute later, a gentile came over to him and said, “Rabbi, please read this paper.” The Rabbi looked at it and saw a pasuk from the Navi which read ‘הביאו את כל המעשר...אמר ה' – it was about giving ma'aser and Hashem promising blessing as a result. The Rabbi looked at this pasuk and was perplexed why this goy was showing it to him. The man then said he wanted to give a tithe to Hashem. He took out an envelope from his pocket filled with cash and handed it to the Rabbi. He said, “You are a representative of G-d. You could do whatever you want with this money, it's a gift to Hashem.” The Rabbi counted it and it came out to 1340 Pounds. He gave ma'aser from that money and was left with 1206 Pounds, exactly what he needed. He knew Hashem had many ways of helping, but this way he never imagined. He was deciding whether or not he should publicize this story. Over Pesach, he asked Hashem to guide him. Then he randomly opened his haggadah to a page with a Zohar on it, describing how beautiful it is to publicize the miracles of Hashem and praise Him for it. That's when he told the story. Hashem has infinite ways of helping us. We have to do our job properly and let Him do His.

An English Listening Lesson About The Cost Of Things In The UK ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-mp3-4/ So there are many things we all spend our money on regardless of where you live in the world. But the cost of those things varies hugely. Today we have an Adept English listening lesson which talks about what things in the UK cost. Things like a beer, or some minced beef, things you probably buy where you live and can compare the costs. Obviously there are some currency conversions that need to convert our prices in British Pounds to your own currency. For the major currencies like the Euro you get about 1.1 Euros for a Pound, for the US dollar you get 1.38 Dollars for a Pound and around 103 Indian Rupees for a Pound. I used the Xe currency converter, you can find your own currency if you would like here The median annual pay for full-time employees was £31,461 in the UK in 2020. In London you will probably pay £1,200 a month on average just on a mortgage for a property. A mortgage is the loan you might take out with a bank to slowly pay, usually over 20+ years, for your property. The average mortgage payment in the UK is £723. You know you're getting old when the candles cost more than the cake. ⭐ Bob Hope, Comedian Petrol in the UK is £1.33 for a liter, and diesel is £1.35 a liter. A typical car in the UK has a 60 liter tank so just filling up your car will cost around £70-80. I found this English listening podcast quite interesting to research and pull together. Amelia Hursham is in a difficult spot. She is about to graduate with her undergraduate degree in Marine Biology; however, she will be completing her last semester during COVID...from home, as she is mandated to do online virtual learning. It's not ideal, but we are in a pandemic and it is better to be safe. Unfortunately, Amelia will miss out on networking with the faculty and other students; she had a class trip/field course in Mexico canceled, and she cannot work on an oyster project in the field like she has been doing for the past 2 years. Amelia wants to maximize her Marine Biology work experience as she prepares for her career, but she feels like she needs something that will provide her with the Networking opportunity and work experience that will solidify her experience. In comes Operation Wallacea, a science trip that will provide her with the experience she needs. Only one slight problem, the cost is 5,000 British Pounds and out of her budget. She is not going to let that stop her from attaining her dream. Amelia is going to fundraise for the money which will not only help her pay for the cost of the course but also provide her with the experience in fundraising that could help her in the next job opportunity that comes her way. And she is going to raise it by running a Marathon (26.2 miles)!!! You can help Amelia achieve her dream by donating to her Go Fund Me campaign. If you are not in the position to donate yourself, then feel free to share this with some people who might. If you visit a different country you might need to get some of the local currency. You might get Ringgit in Malaysia, Pesos in Mexico, Kip in Laos, or Tala in Samoa. However, there is one country where you have to be careful what currency you get because there are different notes produced in different parts of the country, and the different notes aren’t accepted everywhere in the country. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. WHAT EVS CAN WE EXPECT FROM STELLANTIS "By overwhelming margins, shareholders of both Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot parent Group PSA Monday morning approved a $58 billion merger creating the world's fourth-largest automaker, Stellantis." says NBC News: "Officials have suggested the merger will yield billions of dollars in annual savings while helping Stellantis accelerate development of the electric and autonomous vehicles expected to transform the auto industry over the coming decade. The new automaker will be under pressure to ramp up spending on both autonomous and electrified vehicles over the coming years. On the battery-car side, Stellantis will have to catch up with key competitors taking the lead in the race to bring electric vehicles to market." https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/peugeot-shareholders-vote-merge-fiat-chrysler-creating-world-s-fourth-n1252712 NISSAN TO BUILD ITS NEW EV IN JAPAN AND NOT THE UK "The Japanese paper Nikkei reported that the new Nissan Ariya will be built in Japan rather than at Nissan’s UK factory in Sunderland. According to the paper, Nissan considered Sunderland but Brexit worries led the manufacturer to decide in favour of exporting the Ariya from Japan." says Next Green Car: " The UK plant that makes the Leaf and Qashqai has, at times, built more than 500,000 units a year, though that dropped to 350,000 in 2019. About 80% of those models are exported. The Ariya is the first EV from Nissan since the Leaf debuted a decade ago. The model will be sold in phases next year in Japan, Western markets, and China. Ariyas bound for Europe and the US will be made at Nissan's assembly plant in Japan's Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9055/nissan-to-build-its-new-ev-in-japan-and-not-the-uk/ NIO TEASES ITS FLAGSHIP SEDAN "NIO announced that during its annual NIO Day event, on January 09, 2021, it will unveil an all-new flagship sedan - actually the first sedan in NIO's lineup." reports InsideEVs: "If it will be similar to the good-looking NIO ET Preview concept from 2019 and we are extremely eager to see it. The Chinese manufacturer said that the car will be equipped with the latest autonomous driving technologies and a 150 kWh battery pack! This is basically the biggest battery in a passenger car ever (assuming series production models). We guess that range should exceed 600-800 km (370-500 miles), assuming energy consumption of: respectively 250wh & 200wh / km" https://insideevs.com/news/464111/nio-teases-flagship-sedan-150-kwh-battery/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles FOXCONN SEALS MANUFACTURING DEAL WITH CHINESE EV STARTUP BYTON "Apple Inc. supplier Foxconn Technology Group signed a strategic cooperation deal with embattled Chinese electric-vehicle startup Byton Ltd. in a transaction that could mark a large bet by the iPhone assembler on the car-making business." reports Bloomberg: "Foxconn will supply Byton with its advanced manufacturing technology, operation management expertise and supply chain resources. . The companies aim to start mass production of the Byton M-Byte by the first quarter of 2022, according to a statement Monday. Foxconn is the single most important production partner for Apple, which is reportedly considering developing a self-driving car of its own. Foxconn is also seeking to diversify a business that depends on the U.S. smartphone giant for half its revenue." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-04/foxconn-in-talks-with-chinese-ev-startup-byton-for-funding WORKHORSE GOT A LARGE ELECTRIC-VEHICLE ORDER Workhorse secured an order from Pride Group Enterprises for 6,320 C-Series all-electric vans. Workhorse’s C-Series vehicles are commercial delivery vans." reports Barrons: "Pride Group appears to be a privately held logistics company operating in the U.S. and Canada, offering services such as truck rental and trucking services. The company wasn’t immediately available to comment on the size of its operations, but Pride lists 260 trucks in its logistics group. the news release says the order is “subject to various production and delivery conditions.” That could mean that delivery is predicated on Pride Group’s own demand for delivery vehicles, itself driven by demand from Pride’s customers." https://www.barrons.com/articles/workhorse-just-got-a-new-electric-vehicle-order-what-it-means-for-the-stock-51609788398 TESLA CARS TO BE APPROVED FOR SALE IN ISRAEL "Tesla cars are about to be approved for use in Israel. The Transportation Ministry is set to approve the entrance of the US electric carmaker within the next day or so, a ministry spokesman said Monday." according to The Jerusalem Post: "Tesla was originally slated to launch its commercial operations in Israel in January and was set to open a pop-up store in Tel Aviv’s Ramat Aviv Mall. However, the launch was delayed by regulatory hurdles. Details about the company’s operations in Israel will be revealed once the approval is finalized." https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/tesla-cars-to-be-approved-for-sale-in-israel-654215 FIRST LOOK AT TESLA MODEL Y’S HEPA FILTER "It appears that the Tesla Model Y’s HEPA filter is quite sizable, and it is also designed in such a way that replacing it would not be a complicated affair. This was hinted at in an image recently shared by a Tesla enthusiast from China, who was fortunate enough to take a photo of the all-electric crossover’s HEPA filter. " says Sion at Teslarati: " the Model Y’s HEPA filter is installed just behind the all-electric crossover’s frunk. This would likely make the vehicle easier to service compared to its larger sibling, the Model X, which requires some disassembly of the frunk area when its HEPA filter is replaced. Members of the Tesla community have observed that the Model Y’s HEPA filter is quite large and close to the size of the filter found in the Model X, a vehicle that is significantly larger. The size of the component itself also highlights Elon Musk’s previous statements about the Model 3 not having enough space for a hospital-grade HEPA filter such as those found in the Model S and Model X. The company hopes to change that by introducing the production version of its 2017 E-Motion concept" says Jalopnik: "MG has been working on an ambitious growth strategy recently, which aims to get the company up to a million unit sales in 2024. The new electric sports car doesn’t have a name yet, but it will be a two-door 2+2 layout sports coupe. There’s no getting around that the concept looks very Jaguar F-Type in shape, perhaps with a little bit of Aston DBS for flavor. Initial reports regarding the car seem to indicate that MG is looking to launch the sports car for an incredibly reasonable 30,000 British Pounds. At current exchange rates, that’s about $40,000." Autoblog points out the scale from MG will come from the cheap end of the market though: "Storming into the electric sports car segment might elevate MG's image, but it won't significantly increase the firm's annual sales. It's building its volume goals on an electric, city-friendly hatchback that will be positioned in the same segment as the Honda E and the Mini Cooper SE, according to a separate Autocar report. Also due out in 2021, the city car will be about as big as the 3, MG's current entry-level model, and it will be considerably cheaper than its main rivals. Value, not performance, is the born-again brand's biggest selling point in 2021" https://jalopnik.com/mg-plans-electric-sports-car-with-300-miles-of-range-fo-1845988501 https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/04/mg-electric-sports-car-emotion/ DEALERS FACE CHOICE: INVEST FOR EVS OR GET BENCHED "The electric revolution disrupting an auto industry set in its ways for more than a century is pushing dealerships to make a choice: invest in the future or sit on the sidelines." says Detroit News: "GMC told dealers they didn't have to transition to stay open. But if they want to sell the Hummer EV coming late this year, they must agree to invest in charging stations, training and tools needed to work on and sell electric vehicles. To sell Ford Motor Co.'s Mustang Mach-E, dealers have to be EV-certified with expanded charging abilities, increased service capabilities and more personnel training. Ford has 3,000 dealers and 2,100 have signed up for the certification." https://eu.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/2021/01/04/car-dealers-must-invest-in-selling-electric-vehicles/4025584001/ 25 CHANGES THAT TESLA MADE TO THE MODEL 3 WITH THE 2021 REFRESH @1:32 New Aero Wheels & Cover @2:50 Chrome Delete @3:15 Smaller Frunk @3:35 Hood Easier To Close @4:12 Double Pane Glass On Front Windows @5:23 New Trunk Gasket @5:53 Automatic Opening & Closing Trunk @7:27 New Headlights @8:02 Trunk Opens 3” Less Than Before @8:46 Center Console Redesign @9:13 Wireless Charging Pads @9:21 Accent Stitching On Console Trim @9:38 Armrest Tray No Longer Included @9:56 USB-C Ports Replace USB-A In Center Console @10:34 Formatted USB Drive Included & Mounted In Glove Box @11:27 USB-C Ports replace USB-A In Rear Seating area @11:35 Metal Scroll Wheel On Steering Wheel @11:59 Graphite Colored Paint Used On Power Seat Controls @12:12 Magnetic Sun Visor Clips @12:32 New Graphic On Door Release Buttons @13:12 Heated Steering Wheel @13:54 Heat Pump System @15:25 Improved Battery Cells / More Capacity @16:25 Increased Range @17:21 Improved Efficiency QUESTION OF THE WEEK EV tech is on a rip, but is the constant improvement around an EV a possible reason NOT to buy one? In June 1993, 16-year old Christina Menzies was out and about like a typical teenager. Earlier in the day she attended a fair on Gutersloh RAF, Germany. Later in the evening, she ended the night at Club 47 – a club located on the base. But this was the last time she was seen alive. Christina’s remains were later found 10 km from the base. A British soldier was arrested and tried for her murder, but what happened at the Royal Armed Forces Court-Martial shocked the Menzies family. Dig in with Margot as she discusses the unsolved murder case of Christina Menzies, in an attempt that someone may be able to come forward with information and bring closure to the Menzies family. -----Crime Stoppers UK is on the case. This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, we welcome photographer/clothing designer/DJ/party promoter Ciesay from Places + Faces to the Upper West Side! Fresh off the stage from Places + Faces' first Boiler Room concert in NYC, where Cam'Ron, Jim Jones, Amine, Valee, Sahbabii and many more performed, Ciesay discusses growing up between South London, England and Gambia, the son of an importer/exporter father and a mother who worked for the United Nations, what popular culture he picked up vs. missed out on, the bootleg merch he wore as a child, how stamped-up his passport became at an early age, and the racism he encountered both abroad and at home. Ciesay dives into his first trip alone, to New York City, after an invite from a distant relative came through Facebook, how he used his time in New York to immerse himself in the burgeoning hip-hop scene of the 2010s alongside A$AP Mob, Travis Scott, Big Sean and Drake, the methods he'd use to sneak into concerts, how he made his name as a photographer, and all the terrible filters he used on early Instagram. We get into singular moments in his photography with DMX, Kanye, Tyler the Creator and Bryson Tiller, how he made sweatshirts with his last 300 British Pounds, his friends moshed in them, and he had to take it as a loss, borrowed money from friends, and built a brand that was so dope soon enough Wiz Khalifa was rocking it on his birthday. We talk about how Places + Faces developed their business, their ethos, and how they chose what lanes to occupy, what brands they collaborate with, learning how to be patient with how partnerships and products develop, and how they're organically creating tangible moments for a new generation across lots of mediums. All that, plus where Ciesay has gotten the most lost in the world, why P+F still feels like a London brand while selling all over the world, whether we will all in fact #ComeToBrazil, what the real national anthem of Gambia is, and so much more! In episode 3 we look at the Italian Renaissance variant Rinascimento. What's great about it, what's bad about it, and how based on recent Forum talk it can be improved. Then its onto a game inside a game (how very enigmatic), with the variant Bourse. Venue: Regatta Hotel, Brisbane Drinks of choice:Kaner - Dogbolter Dark Ale Reserve, Matilda Bay Brewing, AustraliaAmby - Punter's Corner Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coonawarra, South AustraliaThe guys discuss their history with the Regatta Hotel, with Amby once working in the drive-through bottleshop that no longer exists and Kaner regularly playing Backgammon there (who knew he played something other than Diplomacy!) The Italian Renaissance variant - Rinascimento Kaner and Amby both love this variant created by Emmanuele Ravaioli (Tadar es Darden). Here's what they have to say about this fun filled jaunt through the Italian countryside:Kaner talks about how Emmanuele got him into variant creation in the early days of vDiplomacy. Kaner discusses how he talked to Shep and Butterhead when they were playing games of Chaos and Octopus about the idea of combining the two together. After posting their thoughts in the forum Tadar offered to give him a hand, creating Kaner's first variant Chaoctopi. Kaner briefly talks about how this variant played on the Classic map works and the rule changes it spawned for many other variants.Amby brings us back to Rinascimento, talking about how he loves the look of the map and its historical setting. Kaner enjoys some of the weird rules such as Benevento's army not being able to move, the French and Turkish players starting with units but no SC's. Amby joins in with how access across the spine of Italy is often limited by mountain passes. And the guys forget to totally mention that to win not only do you need to reach 33 SC's but one of them must by the capital Rome. Nice work there.Kaner talks about how in his experience the Papal States get sandwiched, and why his favourite country to play is Geneva with its options on land and sea and how you can work with the nearby city-state players, middle and larger powers. Amby reflects on his one-time surprising win as Turkey.Rinascimento is often recognised as one of the most unbalanced maps with mega players Venice, Naples and the Papal States, mid-size players Milan, Savoy and Firenze and micro players Sienna, Pisa, Ferrara, Turkey and France. It means smaller players really need to work hard in negotiating and working with other players to survive.Kaner reminds Amby how the points scoring system for Rinascimento is different to most other games to help make things fair eg a small player who survives can get a better share of the pot than a large player who scrapes home with the SCs they began with. How whoever draws the Papal States can never help themselves, behaving like the Pope. The guys discuss recent discussions in the vDiplomacy forum about creating variations to the Rinascimento variant. Decima Legio has created a number of images showing how this could work. The three ideas that seem to be getting traction are:Combining lesser states into more powerful states to balance things (although not historically accurate)Breaking up some of the bigger states and introducing other players such as the Barbary pirates, the Spanish, etc.Creating a chaos style version with everyone only having a single SC.Amby shares ancient discussions with Emmanuele on why France was included on the current map.Of course, for any changes to happen the new development site mentioned by Captainmeme in the last episode needs to get up and running first.Amby wraps it up with an entertaining twist on the colour scheme of the "Rinascimento" logo in the top right of the map, and shout outs to TheatreVarus' forum thread to start the conversation on improving it, Gopher27's take on diplomacy vs tactics and great suggestions from ScubaSteve, Hirnsaege, Ruffhaus and Ingebot.A variant inside a variant - Bourse Diplomacy Next after topping up drinks, we jump into Bourse - a game that can be played just by the players on the map, or them and anyone wanting to play via the forum, or even people just in the forum:Invented by Don Miller in the seventies, it essentially has two simultaneous games running: one on the map, the other offboard .In the offboard game every player starts with 1000 units of currency for each of the countries on the map. So if the Bourse was being played on the Classic board each player would start with 1000 French Francs, 1000 British Pounds, 1000 German Marks, etc. At the start of the game every currency is worth the same as every other unit (all equal to $1). From there you can buy and sell currency units. You can never sell more than 500 units of any one currency each turn, but you can buy as much as you want. Obviously you need to create a cash reserve through selling currency to then buy more units of another (or multiple currencies). Each sale of 100 units of a currency depreciates the value of that currency by 1 cent eg in the first turn if there's a net over all sell off of 500 pounds (France, Germany and Austria sell 500 pounds each [-$1500], Turkey and Russia buy 500 pounds each [+$1000] and Britain and Italy don't buy/sell pounds at all, the over all effect is a sell off of 500 pounds), the pound's value is reduced the following turn by 5 cents, down to $0.95.The same works in reverse in appreciating currency value.Changes to unit values are based on buy/sell orders in sets of 100 eg an overall net purchase of 300 Francs would appreciate that currency next turn by 3 cents to $1.03. But if the overall purchase was 299 Francs it would only increase in value by 2 cents.Critically when buying/selling you're not only betting on the currency, but on the currency's longevity on the board eg if Italy is eliminated and you hold 2000 Lira, their value drops to nothing ($0).This tends to see people investing in countries who are doing well on the board. But Kaner explains on top of what decisions you're making, everyone else is assessing the situation. He gives the example of Russia doing very well and as a result people buying up Roubles, while at the same time Germany is getting hammered by France people will be inclined to sell the Mark. This understandably drives up the value of the Rouble while the Mark's value drops substantially.Amby builds on this idea by adding a degree of deception. France in the above set of circumstances may decide to privately make peace with Germany and put in buy orders for Marks. This way France picks up the Mark at a bargain basement price, while taking the bet that making peace with Germany will see it recover and survive to the end of the game for a great return on its currency value.Kaner explains that in the original Bourse, players of the Bourse don't play on the board. That way the shenanigans above don't happen. But with so many map variants at vDiplomacy with lots of players, Bourse is usually played with just the onboard players. The example the guys talk about is the game Boursed 901 played on the Known World map.At the end of the game, every 100 units of currency you own is multiplied by the number of supply centres that country has. Then you add these figures up and whoever has the highest figure wins. Kaner is reminded how he in fact won Boursed 901 in the currency part of the game and second on the board.Kaner also clears up Amby's question on whether a player eliminated on the board can continue playing in the currency game; they can... and can go on to win that aspect of the game.Amby talks about his gameplay in Boursed 901, trying to manipulating currencies but finding that other players - particularly Kaner - were one step ahead and manipulated currencies better. Amby explains how a strategy of spreading your portfolio risk generally won't get you ahead in the game.Kaner flags how he's so jeered up about Bourse that he'll propose a new game on the vDip forum. The more players interested the bigger the map will be played.Amby and Kaner also discuss how many games are too many games to be committed to.Amby gives a shout out to G-Man who experienced all sorts of technical problems trying to comment on the Known World 901 game discussed in Episode 1. The guys reflect on how their enthusiasm and passion is making the podcast happen, despite their piss poor technical skills. Finally the guys discuss how feedback to date on recording in a pub has been surprisingly positive... listeners feel like they're catching up with mates over a few drinks. So I guess we'll keep our alcohol and bar themed tour for each episode! If you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see covered in an upcoming podcast, or something you'd like to see regularly covered, please contact us or leave your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks to Dan Philip for his rockin' intro to the Diplomacy Games podcast.
Jason Burack of Wall St for Main St interviewed returning guest, former Wall St bond trader, gold fund manager, paid newsletter writer http://www.investmentresearchdynamics.com and the co-host of the Shadow of Truth podcast, Dave Kranzler. Dave writes the Short Seller's Journal paid newsletter and also a paid newsletter with gold and silver juniors. Jason and Dave have an hour+ long discussion covering many topics including: 1) Hillary Clinton's hypocrisy/corruption and her latest speech in Omaha where she promises to increase taxes heavily on the US middle class (with the audience cheering it!) https://www.conservativeoutfitters.com... Jason then asks Dave about the global economy. Jason asks Dave why is the Bank of England suddenly doing a massive new liquidity/QE injection of $100 billion British Pounds immediately for UK banks and then promised to buy $70 billion per month in bonds? Jason and Dave discuss what will stop these suicidal central bankers from continuing to inject trillions in new liquidity into the global economy per year. To wrap up the interview/discussion, Jason asks Dave about shorting stocks and also about the bull market restart in gold, silver and precious metal companies. Dave also shares his experiences using Bitgold/Gold Money.
