We talk about going back to work, lunch breaks, and the impact of COVID-19 on daily routines. We talk about why people need a break from work and why there seems to be less enjoyment of work. We also talk about the importance of mental health breaks, and the value of social interaction in the workplace. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Dec 8th Publish Date: Dec 7th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Friday, December 8th, and Happy heavenly Birthday to Sammy Davis Jr. ***12.08.23 - BIRTHDAY - SAMMY DAVIS JR*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Cobb Fire Rescues Two People from Burning Home in Kennesaw ‘A Total Failure': Lawyers Blast Cobb Superior Court Clerk for Backlog Cobb Unemployment Goes Up Slightly but Still Trails Behind State and Atlanta All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: ESOG STORY 1: Cobb Fire Rescues Two People from Burning Home in Kennesaw Cobb County firefighters successfully rescued two individuals from a house fire on North Hampton Drive. The rescue team found and removed a person from the smoke-filled home, providing immediate medical care in the front yard. The patient was then transferred to a local hospital. Another patient was treated on the scene, and both were reported to be in stable condition. Unfortunately, several cats and dogs perished in the fire, while others survived or remained unaccounted for. The cause of the blaze was not disclosed by Cobb Fire and Emergency Services. STORY 2: ‘A Total Failure': Lawyers Blast Cobb Superior Court Clerk for Backlog The Cobb County Superior Court Clerk's office, led by Connie Taylor, is facing backlash as it is nearly three months behind in filing online court records. Local lawyers are expressing frustration, calling the delays unprecedented for a usually efficient court system. The backlog is causing problems for individuals relying on the online records system for case updates. A Facebook post by Cobb Superior Court Judge Rob Leonard urged those with urgent filings to send them directly to his office. Taylor, who faced controversy last year for profiting off passport fees, has not responded to requests for comment. The backlog affects both civil and criminal cases, impacting due process and causing collateral consequences. Lawyers blame the office's leadership for the issues. STORY 3: Cobb Unemployment Goes Up Slightly but Still Trails Behind Georgia, Atlanta In October 2023, Cobb County, Marietta, and Smyrna maintained lower unemployment rates than the Atlanta or Georgia averages, but the pure number of unemployed individuals increased. Cobb County's unemployment rate was 3.1%, unchanged from the previous month but up from 2.6% a year earlier. The Atlanta area reported a 3.4% unemployment rate in October 2023, higher than the 2.9% in October the previous year. In Marietta, the unemployment rate was 3.2%, slightly up from 3.0% in September 2023. Smyrna also had a 3.2% unemployment rate in October 2023. All three areas had rates lower than the state average of 3.4%. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: CUofGA – CHRISTMAS PIEDMONT STORY 4: North Georgia Counties Declared Disaster Areas Due to Drought Farm producers in several north Georgia counties, including Bartow, Cherokee, and Forsyth, can seek emergency disaster relief following the U.S. Department of Agriculture's designation of 12 counties as natural disaster areas due to severe drought conditions. Emergency loans, available through the Farm Service Agency, can be applied for in these counties, with relief coverage extending to contiguous counties such as Cobb. The loans, capped at $500,000, enable producers to address actual production losses and essential living expenses. The region faces extreme drought conditions, prompting the relief efforts. Rainfall forecasts bring hope, with a 90% chance of rain anticipated over the weekend. Despite recent rains, the area still struggles with a persistent drought situation. For relief applications, visit farmers.gov. STORY 5: Credit Union of Georgia Raises Over $7,500 for The Salvation Army Credit Union of Georgia employees volunteered to ring the bell for The Salvation Army at Kroger in Kennesaw for a week, raising over $3,500. The credit union added $4,000, bringing the total funds raised to over $7,500. The Salvation Army utilizes these funds to address poverty, addiction, and homelessness, benefitting communities by providing help, hope, and healing to those in need. The money is reinvested in the local community where it is received. For more information, visit www.CUofGA.org or www.salvationarmyusa.org. We'll be back in a moment Break: INGLES 10 – DRAKE STORY 6: Powder Springs' Parks Department Earns Agency of the Year Honor The Powder Springs' Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department was honored as the 2023 Agency of the Year (Population under 20,000) at the Georgia Recreation and Park Association Awards Banquet. With six employees managing 47 acres of park space and cultural facilities, the department organizes various events catering to all ages. Notable programs include the Bringing The Sea to the Springs seafood festival, the Sounds of the Springs summer concert series, and the Family to Park Day summer movie series. The department's achievements, such as the opening of the Skate Park and recognition for the seafood festival, contribute to its positive community impact. Plans for 2024 include continuing these events and introducing Brown Bag Lunch midday concerts in April. STORY 7: Aetna Invests Over $510,000 to Address Food and Housing Insecurity Across Georgia Aetna Better Health of Georgia, a CVS Health company, has allocated over $510,000 in community investments to 17 local organizations in Georgia. These funds will support critical food and housing services for individuals facing food insecurity and homelessness. Beneficiaries include Sweetwater Mission Inc. in Austell, YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta Inc. in Cobb County, and The Salvation Army in Marietta. The investments aim to combat food insecurity, promote health literacy among youth and families, and address homelessness and housing insecurity.
Louise Bernice Halfe, whose Cree name is Sky Dancer, is married with two adult children and three grandsons. Raised on the Saddle Lake Reserve in Alberta, she attended Blue Quills Residential School before earning a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Regina. She completed two years of Nechi Training in St. Albert’s Nechi Institute: Centre of Indigenous Learning, where she has also facilitated the program. Halfe has been awarded honorary degrees from Wilfred Laurier University, the University of Saskatchewan, and Mount Royal University. As well as serving as Saskatchewan’s Poet Laureate for two years, she’s been a keynote speaker at numerous conferences. In this podcast, Halfe reads to us from her four books, Bear Bones and Feathers, Blue Marrow, The Crooked Good, and Burning In This Midnight Dream. All have received numerous accolades and awards, and will be reprinted next year by Brick Books and Kegedonce Press. A collection of selected poems, Sôhkêyihta (which means “have courage” or “be strong”), was published by Wilfred Laurier in 2018, and an eagerly awaited new collection, awâsis -- kinky and dishevelled will be released on April 1st, 2021, by Brick Books. Halfe’s poetry earned her a Lifetime Achievement Award from the League of Canadian Poets, and last year, she received the 2020 Cheryl and Henry Kloppenburg Award for Literary Excellence. The jury of the Latner Writers’ Trust Poetry Prize describe her literary impact in the following way: “Halfe’s poetics refuse the hierarchies of colonial literary critique, instead affirming the equality of the contemporary, the ancestral, and the mythological; holding a multiplicity of cosmologies and quotidian realities as relevant and urgent…” Thus, they go on, “Her work cannot be assimilated in the canon of contemporary Canadian literature; instead, it must be ingested, transforming our collective literature on a cellular level, reimagining our identities, languages, and memories as denizens of Turtle Island.”
Shannon Webb-Campbell is a mixed Indigenous (Mi’kmaq) settler poet, writer, and critic. Her books include: Still No Word (Breakwater 2015), the recipient of Eagle Canada’s Out in Print Award, I Am A Body of Land (Book*hug 2019), and Lunar Tides (forthcoming with Book*hug in 2022). Shannon holds a MFA in Creative Writing from University of British Columbia, and a MA in English Literature at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, and is a doctoral student at the University of New Brunswick in the Department of English. She is the editor of Visual Arts News Magazine. Committed to reparation, self-education, and healing, Webb-Campbell writes out of a deep sense of responsibility to Indigenous communities. Her collection I am a Body of Land, is, as Carol Rose Daniels puts it, “forces readers out of polite conversation and into a realm where despair and hard truths are being told, being heard and finding the emotional strength to learn from it, find our way out and embrace our beauty as Indigenous women.” In Susan Musgrave’s words, this is “Poetry awake with the winds from the Four Directions, poetry that crosses borders, margins, treaties, yellow tape warning: Police Line. Do Not Cross. Poetry whose traditional territory, through colonization, has become trauma and shame. Unceded poetry. Read. Respect. Weep.” In this podcast, which includes readings from her forthcoming collection, Lunar Tides, Webb-Campbell’s poems range across theory, the legacies of colonialism, kinship, and Indigenous resurgence. Her words follow the rhythms of the body, the water, the cycles of the moon, and long and deep familial relationships amid the profound grief of losing her mother. You can hear, too, her eloquent review of her recommended pandemic reading: Shalan Joudry’s Waking Ground.
J.R. Carpenter is a UK-based artist, writer, performer, and researcher working across performance, print, and digital media. Born in Nova Scotia, she lived in Montreal for many years before emigrating to the United Kingdom in 2009. Her pioneering web-based works have been presented in museums, galleries, and festivals around the world. She is a winner of the CBC Quebec Writing Competition, the QWF Carte Blanche Quebec Award, Expozine Alternative Press Award, the Dot Award for Digital Literature, and the New Media Writing Prize. Her debut poetry collection, An Ocean of Static, was highly commended for the Forward Prizes 2018. Her latest collection, This is a Picture of Wind, is based on a web-app by the same name and was included in The Guardian’s “Best poetry books of 2020.” She is a Fellow of the Eccles Centre For North American Studies at the British Library and the Moore Institute at NUI Galway. She delivered this podcast reading for the CLC as the 2020-21 Writer-in-Residence at University of Alberta.

For so many of us 2020 will be the most remarkable and memorable year in business - yet maybe for all the wrong reasons…. Less customer contacts leading to loss of revenue Overwhelmed contact centres with too many employees falling ill with stress Huge efforts made to enable the workforce to work from home - yet the inital enthusiasm has worn off - so what now? Furloughed employees as long as possible - but then having to make them redundant, as funds are running out Quality of work deteriorating Impatient customers You name it - and it's quite easy to just hope that 2021 will be different. There are still two months left - so in today's episode I'm sharing how you can make a difference in your customer service centre - and how you can set yourself up for success in 2021! 1. Leading People One of the simplest ways of engaging with your now remote teams is to invite them to virtual “brown bag lunches”! Remember, when you were in the office, you took the time to walk the call floor regularly, you sat with your advisors, you could hear what was going on first hand. Now this has all changed. And whilst a majority of Working From Home Advisors state that they loved to see their leaders in a jumper instead of a suit, loved to hear their dog barking or a child dashing in and out of the office, they miss the leadership of their line manager - and more importantly of their executive team! Play a game when you are with them! Just to break the ice! I recently attended a virtual conference and we played a wikipedia game! Given a starting point - who ever arrived at the final destination without leaving Wikipedia had won! Here is how it works: Open the Wikipedia homepage: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (remember to stipulate the language you wish to use)Start with a key word such as: Black RavenKey this initial word or word combination into the search bar on the top right hand corner. Now - as everyone is on the start page for the game give them the end work - for example Elizabeth The Second. The aim is to get to “Elizabeth The Second” only using links within the articles you are looking at! To prove that the winner didn't cheat you will have to ask the candiate to back space from Elizabeth 2nd to Black Raven and verify that only Wikipedia pages have been used. It's fun and lightens the mood! If you are hiring for peak or because you realise your team needs more people to cope with the workload - there is so much talent in the market place just now - you can choose. That's a great place to be in, but also for all the job-seekers a very stressful place! Please be considerate. Communication is key! It breaks my heart to hear and read stories where people have applied for jobs, and not even got an acknowledgement that their application had been received. Or they went for a screening interview (not uncommon, in fact quite best practice, I don't want to waste your time, nor do I want to waste my time) - but never got any feedback! It is reasonable and best practice to be in touch with your candidates within 24 to 48 hours. Also - if you do hire - be clear on the budget. In essence, if you have a salary budget in mind - advertise this clearly, don't make false promises! Right now you, the recruiting manager, holds all the power. Integrity is the word. Download our free Recruitment and Onboarding Checklist. The link is below. 2. Improve Process In a recent conversation with my hairdresser, we discussed the New Normal. Besides the fact that the current working circumstances are here to stay for the foreseeable future, Gary made a very interesting point. He said: “I don't understand what the fuss is, about the New Normal. We have always focused on excellent customer service and high employee engagement. So for me it's just MORE of normal than normal.” We offer more training, we offer more service, we just offer more of everything than we did before. This allows us to claim excellence. And it pays off. Frances Hunter Hairdressing is a Finalist in the British Hairdressing Awards 2020! One of the main complaints I get when speaking to frontline managers is that they do not have the tools or knowledge to perform their roles effectively and efficiently! That's an interesting thought, considering that globally in 2020 there was a budget for Learning & Development of 370 Billion Dollars. A massive amount! The average spend per employee for learning and development this year is $1299 in the US but only in the UK 30% of all firms only spend an average of £400 per employee on L&D. Given that that the current situation is new to everyone, this is a concerningly low number! Even more concerning given the fact that 43% of the firms surveyed said their L&D budget is not to be increased in the next 12 months, 19% even say - it will decrease. So - how does this sit with the work your team is asked to perform? And how does this sit with the customer experience your firm is asked to provide? In order to finish the year strong - give your management team (especially team managers and operations managers) the tools to effectively work with their workforce. And help them to be leaders and managers (which is not the same!) Another process you definitely want to improve is your operational handbook - the manual your team should have had at the start of the pandemic. There is an entire episode dedicated to this topic on our website, rutzconsulting.com. Just search for; Episode 28 - How to design and produce an Operational Manual. You can download a Blueprint I am using in my own business and have used as a framework in so many contact centres! Now is the time to document your workflows, your processes, your contacts. You will find the link in the show notes. 3. Amplify Profit You are most likely in the process to finalise your budget for 2021 and get it signed off. This can be so stressful, I know! Depending on the business model you are running, you have so many moving parts. The more complex your contact centre set up is, the more complex most likely your budget is too. You probably often wish - you, as the finance director - had more direct input from your operational team. And you ops team probably wishes they were consulted when a budget is created! In episode 31 “Finances made Human” - Andi Lonen explains in layman's terms how you can ensure that your budgeting process becomes easier, more realistic and subsequently much closer to reality, hence easier to manage. The link to this episode is below. Financial Performance is not just about the money coming in though! It is equally about the money going out! In our industry, the evolving door is one of the biggest costs. Yet one that is totally in your control! Absence and attrition can kill an operation! Just imagine - the cost to recruit, the cost to train, the cost of overtime to meet your service levels, the cost of absence due to stress, etc. etc. When I work with frontline operational managers I often notice that they have no idea what this figure actually looks like. If your team leader doesn't know the absence percentage or the attrition percentage of his team and how this translates into actual cost in pounds or dollars, then you must correct this. In the LEAP Academy we dedicate a full module to this topic! Actions you can take today: Schedule a Brown Bag Lunch for 45 minutes with up to 10 members of your frontline teams! Enroll your Operational Leaders in a skills development course. Of course we would love to give you a capability briefing of the LEAP academy. There are so many other courses out there. Just do it! Revisit your hiring process. Ensure you provide feedback Write this OPS Manual! You know it's well overdue! If any of the topics resonate with you and you might find yourself in a position where in the next 3 to 6 months one of them might cause you a challenge, please do reach out to me and my team. We would love to talk to you in the next 30 days and evaluate how we are able to help! You can find us on rutz consulting.com or talk to me directly via linkedIn messenger. As I am recording this, I want to share with you that rutz consulting has been accepted in the Programme for Growth with Business Women Scotland! I'm delighted to be spending a couple of days in the company of other, women lead, Scottish businesses. Learning together, sharing experiences and expertise. Of course my experience will turn into a podcast towards the end of this year. https://rutzconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/LEAP-Recruitment-and-OnboardingCheckListV1.pdfLEAP Academy: https://leapacademyinternational.com/ Podcast Episode 28 - How to design an Operational Manual https://rutzconsulting.com/podcasts/episode-28-opex-with-marianne-rutz-how-to-design-and-produce-an-operational-manual-fit-for-purpose/ Podcast Episode 31- Finances Made Human https://rutzconsulting.com/podcasts/episode-31-opex-with-marianne-rutz-finances-made-human-with-andi-lonnen/ Rutz Consulting: https://rutzconsulting.com/Marianne Rutz on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marianne-rutz-351b0a5/ My Podcast is produced by: https://www.unavoided.com

Author and pacifist Sarah Sentilles believes humans can choose to create or to destroy: life, art, families, beauty -- it's all up to us. In Draw Your Weapons, Sentilles' fourth book, she offers visual imagery through the written word in a literary collage that inspires us to look deeper into our choices; to explore our ability both to create beauty and to wreak violence and destruction. Ten years in the making, Draw Your Weapons is a most unusual book of nonfiction, in which images of war, violence and torture vie with images of peace, ordinary life and art to help readers comprehend the magnitude and power of their choices. Listen here as Sarah explains the nature of literary collage, and why she chose this format for her book. She also shares the very personal and difficult journey she took in bringing this project to fruition. Don't miss the chance to explore this fascinating topic with her further, as Sarah presents her work at Eagle Harbor Books on Wednesday, August 9th at 12:30 as part of their Brown Bag Lunch series. Bring your lunch and the bookstore will provide drinks and snacks. Though not required, reservations are recommended so that space and drinks can be generously planned: Just call Eagle Harbor Books at 206-842-5332 to let them know you plan to attend. Our panel explored the mobile money space from all perspectives: community-level implementation, programs, technology and international policy.
