“Caretaker” 30th-anniversary reflections In pursuit of Maquis rebels, the starship Voyager is pulled across the galaxy and quickly becomes entangled in local affairs. Captain Kathryn Janeway and rebel leader Chakotay, whose ship was also snagged by the entity known as the Caretaker, join forces as they look for a way back to Federation space. But first they must rescue missing crew members with the help of an odd merchant and his girlfriend. Once everyone has been safely returned, Janeway is faced with a difficult decision: take her crew home and abandon a world in need or destroy the Caretaker and strand Voyager 70,000 light years from the Federation. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing bring back our dedicated Voyager podcast in honor of the 30th-anniversary and kick off a retrospective that will take you through all of the series, one episode at a time. fWotD Episode 2662: Kes (Star Trek) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 18 August 2024 is Kes (Star Trek).Kes is a fictional character played by Jennifer Lien on the American science fiction television show Star Trek: Voyager. The series follows the crew of the starship USS Voyager, stranded far from home and struggling to get back to Earth. Kes joins the crew in the pilot episode "Caretaker", opening an aeroponics garden and working as the medical assistant to the artificial intelligence known as the Doctor. She is a member of a telepathic alien species known as the Ocampa who have latent psychic abilities and a life span of only nine years. Her storylines focus on encouraging the Doctor to develop his humanity and dealing with her Talaxian boyfriend Neelix's jealousy. She also seeks to expand upon her mental capabilities, leaving in the fourth season after her powers threaten to destroy the ship. She reappears in a season six episode and features in Star Trek: Voyager novels and short stories. Voyager's creators Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and Jeri Taylor designed Kes to be a rapidly-aging character who would provide audiences with a different perspective on time. Although Kes is portrayed as fragile and innocent, she is also shown as having hidden strength and maturity. Voyager's producers reluctantly fired Lien after her personal issues affected her reliability on set. At the time, this was not openly discussed and her departure was attributed to other reasons; these ranged from Lien voluntarily leaving to pursue other roles to her being removed to make room for Jeri Ryan's introduction as Seven of Nine.Kes was a fan favorite character while Voyager was airing, although critics reacted more negatively, finding her boring and without a clear purpose. Lien was praised for her performance, which was highlighted in reviews of individual episodes. Kes's age was the subject of critical discussion, questioning if she was too young to be dating Neelix. Lien's removal from Voyager received mixed reviews from critics; some preferred the addition of Seven of Nine while others were disappointed by this casting change. Reviewers and fans disliked her return in the season six episode "Fury", which some media outlets called one of the worst moments in the Star Trek franchise. Academics have analyzed Kes's representation of femininity, her relationship with Captain Kathryn Janeway, and her mental abilities. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:37 UTC on Sunday, 18 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Kes (Star Trek) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Stephen.

Star Trek: Voyager, Series 3, Episode 26 / Series 4, Episode 1. First broadcast on Wednesday, 21 May 1997 and Wednesday, 3 September 1997. As Voyager approaches the end of its third year, it's time for its very own version of The Best of Both Worlds. And here it is, complete with a massive encounter with the Borg, clouds of débris, a terrifying new enemy, dissension among the commanding officers, and the unveiling of an entirely new kind of human—Borg hybrid. But because it's Voyager, there's also people doing things for no reason and a central conflict disposed of in an unsatisfying way. But (again) because it's Voyager, there's some great weird visuals, a cool new holodeck program, and yet another arresting performance from the Queen of Star Trek, Her Royal Highness, Captain Kathryn Janeway.

The QuackCast

Leaders are not born, they're created… literally in the case of fiction, created by creators of comics, books, movies, and other media! For this Quackcast I was inspired by two things: a video on Leader Characters by the satirical YouTube channel Terrible Writing Advice, and the Disney movie Lightyear, in which the lone wolf classical hero figure learns how to lead. Lots of traits are useful for leadership: Charisma, experience, age, rank, communication skill, empathy, compassion, dominance, and confidence among others, and different styles of leadership work better in different contexts. Take for example the military paradigm of the lieutenant and the sergeant - a lieutenant is typically the lowest ranking commissioned officer, they're a beginner. They're young and they're not experienced but they outrank enlisted men and non-commissioned officers who might have more experience than them. The sergeant is usually one of the highest ranking “non-commissioned officers”, they're usually older than the lieutenant, who outranks them, and they have a LOT more experience. This creates an interesting leadership dynamic- the lieutenant learns from the sergeant but they also lead in a different way from them. The sergeant is better at leading the soldiers and knowing what to do from a practical standpoint while the lieutenant is better at theory and interpreting with higher level orders, eg. “Our orders say we have to take that hill and meet up with the other squad near the river at this map reference, so I want to split the squad…” etc While sergeant will actually be able put all that into practice a lot better than the lieutenant could. - (Said by a non-military person, so this could be very wrong) Fiction is full of leaders, good and bad. Most Scifi tends to have a military influence so it all has a very familiar military hierarchical setup. Star Trek is especially known for its “good” leaders, who're inspiring, clever, brave, full of empathy, experienced, and wise. The perfect foil to them is Zapp Brannigan from Futurama who was specifically created to be the anti-Star Trek type leader with all the very worst traits that any leader could ever have. He's a horrible person, sacrifices troops meaninglessly, has a poor grasp of strategy, and takes advantage of his position for self-gratification and self-aggrandizement, all of which makes him beautifully entertaining as a character! He's one of my fave leaders in fiction, on a par with the 90s Star Trek leaders Jean-Luc Picard, Captain Benjamin Sisko , and Captain Kathryn Janeway. Leadership is a huge subject with lots of other aspects. Politics is a massive subsection in its own right! And we can't forget that it's the followers who actually give the leader power and if they choose to desert then that power can vanish… We cover all this and more in the Quackcast. Who're your fave fictional leaders and why? This week Gunwallace has given us a theme to The Waves Inside - Clear ocean. Orange blue pink. Liquid metal swells. Its crew complement is only 150. The ship itself is fast and powerful, and has the ability to land on a planet's surface. It is one of the most technologically advanced vessels in Starfleet, utilizing computer circuitry that incorporates synthetic neural tissue. Ironically, Janeway's inaugural mission aboard Voyager was to be her last in the Alpha quadrant. While attempting to capture the crew of a renegade Maquis vessel, both her ship and that of the Maquis were pulled into the distant Delta quadrant by powerful alien technology. Unfortunately, there would be no similar “express” route to take them home again. Stranded 70,000 light-years from Earth, Janeway has to convince the Maquis to join her Starfleet crew and serve together during the long voyage back to Federation space. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rich-temple/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rich-temple/support

Stick a cortical stimulator on that dying swan because it's time to dance the "Coda"!Jen Dallman of the Rosemary's Ladies podcast is back on the show this week to discuss an episode of Star Trek: Voyager that puts Captain Janeway's self-possession on trial. When a temporal anomaly causes her shuttle to crash, Kathryn Janeway is seemingly killed. When an apparition of her father appears to her in her seeming afterlife, she'll be forced to choose between letting go and the self-assuredness she's built her life and career on.Twenty-five years ago, Voyager's finale "Endgame" aired on UPN, leaving the show with an alleged mixed legacy. But with the advent of streaming services and social media, Voyager was introduced to a new generation of fans who have embraced the show's ambitious premise and memorable characters, chief among them Captain Kathryn Janeway, play to the hilt by actress Kate Mulgrew. On this episode, we talk about the barriers that Voyager broke as a Trek series, the hodgepodge of initial ideas that coalesced into "Coda", why Voyager continues to endure as a series and how the fans have kept it alive, Janeway as a leader and captain, the way the series reuses and improves existing Trek stories, and the guiding hand of veteran producer Jeri Taylor. We also discuss the series' fluctuating quality, forgetting about Kes, how much horror is *too much* horror, Ocampan back sack, demon delicatessen, improving CPR, euthanizing your captain, Happy Death Day, going all-in on Janeway, Voyager as the first "fan-fic" Trek series, starting the story in the middle, Kazon = Ferengi, #notallromulans, the Passion of the Janeway, pushups and prayer, a little New Mutants talk, a LOT of BSG talk, Jen gives thumbs down to all the 'ships, and Kal thinks Starfleet is a bunch of rubes!"Coda" is a classic Jacob's Ladder scenario!Follow Rosemary's Ladies on Twitter and listen to their show!https://twitter.com/LadiesRosemaryhttps://www.rosemarysladies.com/Learn the story behind your favorite Trek stories with Backtrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingCower in Hell with us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/UeytGNPBuy us a new shuttlecraft on Patreon and Ko-Fi!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodhttps://ko-fi.com/E1E01M2UASubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

Created by Gene RoddenberryOriginally pitched as “Wagon Train to the stars.”Each episode was meant to work on to levels, one of morality and one of suspenseful adventure stories. Trekkie or Trekker = Star Trek Fan Things to know:Enterprise is main ShipStarfleet is like united nations: Peaceful, Diplomatic, Explorers, multiple Alien RacesKlingons = bad, but not all the timeSymbol for Starfleet is the Starfleet Delta, it changes through out time. Many gadgets and inventions made their way to real life (iPads, Cellphones, wireless communicators, Alexa/Google home)Uniforms have a purpose, which shows ranks and which division you are withCaptains = Main Character Enterprise (22nd Century)•The Original Series (1966–1969) on CBS A bit more in the vein of “Wagon Train to the Stars”. Very Episodic Campy to a Fault at times o William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk o Leonard Nimoy as Spock o DeForest Kelley as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy o James Doohan as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott o Nichelle Nichols as Uhura o George Takei as Hikaru Sulu o Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov Still popular in syndication for nearly two decades Considered ground breaking for multi-racial cast Tackled some civil rights issues Popularized Fan conventions & Fan Fiction •The Animated Series (1973–1974) on CBS Reprised a majority of the Cast Not well received by Many Trek fans Considered non-Canon Movies 1-6 based on Original Cast Modern Series (23rd Century)• The Next Generation (1987–1994) on Independent channels Created because the Movies did so well, but Paying William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy would be costly, so new unknown cast = cheaper to produce Created to continue longevity of franchise. o Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard o Jonathan Frakes as Commander William Riker o Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi o Michael Dorn as Worf o Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher o LeVar Burton as chief engineer Geordi La Forge o Brent Spiner as Data o Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher Reintroduced Star Trek to Modern audience, popularized many races that would play rolls in later series Episodic in Nature, but many episode would have themes/character returning to reprise conflicts Popularized the Season Ending Cliffhanger Movies 7-10 Based off TNG Cast • Deep Space Nine (1993–1999) on Independent channels Created as Star Trek was BIG o Avery Brooks as Commander/Captain Benjamin Sisko o Nana Visitor as Major/Colonel Kira Nerys o René Auberjonois as Odo o Armin Shimerman as Quark as Bar o Alexander Siddig as Lieutenant Julian Bashir o Terry Farrell as Lieutenant/Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax o Nicole de Boer as Ezri Dax o Michael Dorn as Commander Worf as o Colm Meaney as Chief Miles O'Brien o Cirroc Lofton as Jake Sisko Episodes are more Serialized than Episodic Instead of a traveling ship, set in a stationary star base, allowing writers to create more compelling and dramatic character interactions/Interpersonal Conflics. Mix of Religious and Science conflicts Shows a full scale War from eyes of Starfleet No Movies were made • Voyager (1995–2001) on UPN Created with the intention of starting a new network/tv channel. At least they attempt to, as the wine takes effect. Eventually failing that, they just end up describing/hypothetically programming their perfect holograms. H.I.L.F.'s, you might call them. So listen in and prepare to be sham-rocked.

Where better to start than the beginning? This week, Jacqui and Jennifer take on the 2-part pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager, “Caretaker.” Nothing is sacred… not Captain Kathryn Janeway’s porn-tastic reveal… not Ensign Harry Kim’s lustrous hair… not even Lieutenant Tom Paris’s sweaty 90s bad boy chest.

Thrown Across the Cosmos This week Johnny and Brian welcome back the #CertifiedInfamous Reading list with the DC Comics Elseworlds masterpiece Kingdom Come, from Mark Waid and Alex Ross. Then they get down to Oregon Trail version Star Trek, with Star Trek: Voyager! #CertifiedInfamous Reading List Kingdom Come (1996) DC Comics Kingdom Come is a four-issue comic book mini-series published in 1996 by DC Comics under their Elseworlds imprint. It was written by Mark Waid and Alex Ross and painted in gouache by Ross, who also developed the concept from an original idea. This Elseworlds story is a deconstructionist tale set in a future that deals with a growing conflict between the visibly out-of-touch “traditional” superheroes, and a growing population of largely amoral and dangerously irresponsible new vigilantes, in many cases the offspring of the traditional heroes. Between these two groups is Batman and his assembled team, who attempt to contain the escalating disaster, foil the machinations of Lex Luthor, and prevent a world-ending superhuman war. Star Trek Voyager (1995) Synopsis Star Trek: Voyager (VOY) focuses on the 24th century adventures of Captain Kathryn Janeway aboard the U.S.S. Voyager. Smaller than either Kirk's or Picard's starships—its crew complement is only...

Five-episode Janeway Marathon. Longtime To The Journey listeners know that Char and Tristan love marathoning Voyager on a lazy Sunday afternoon. They have created marathons for all seven seasons in episodes past. Now they are tackling character-centric marathons. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan each make a list of five episodes they would marathon about Voyager's fearless leader, Captain Kathryn Janeway. She is intelligent, can be a complete badass when the time calls, and though she is compassionate, she does not suffer fools gladly. Once you have listened to Char and Tristan's picks for a Janeway marathon, chime in with your own on The Babel Conference on Facebook or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin). Janeway's Worst Command Decisions. With four pips comes enormous responsibility. This is an attribute that all of the captains in Star Trek, from James T. Kirk to Benjamin Sisko, have come to understand. The well-being of the crew and ship hangs in the balance with every decision made. Actions will affect not only the crew, but possibly impact entire civilizations—or in Captain Kathryn Janeway's case, an entire quadrant. Janeway faced this task without the help or, perhaps at times, the hindrance of Starfleet Command and the Federation. While she did perform well under pressure most of the time, she is human and therefore fallible. Did Captain Janeway accomplish the most favorable outcome for Voyager and her crew or was the Delta Quadrant truly her Kobayashi Maru? In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn and Tristan discuss which of Janeway's command decisions were amongst her worst or most questionable. Should she have booted Neelix from the ship at the end of "Caretaker?" Was giving the Hirogen holographic technology Janeway's only option for ending the conflict in "The Killing Game"? Listen on and find out what Char and Tristan think of these moments and more.

It's the premiere of a new series (and at the time, a new network). The starship Voyager, under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway is tasked with arresting a group of Maquis in the Badlands. A freak energy wave envelops the ship and finds herself 70,000 light years from home in the Delta Quadrant. How did they get here? And can whatever sent them here get them back?
