Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org From March 2026. Today's 2 topics: - In 1892 the world's largest telescope, the Lick Observatory's 36 inch refracting telescope made the news when E.E. Barnard discovered, Amalthea, the 5th moon of Jupiter. In 2025 this historic telescope made the news again when on Christmas morning winds of 114 mph blew off a 3 ton piece of the shutter on its dome. The adaptive optics research pioneered at Lick Observatory helped in the creation of the twin giant 10 meter telescopes that sit atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii.   - Astronomers using the 8.1 m Gemini South Telescope in Chile were excited by the fact that 467P (LINEAR-Grauer)'s Centaur like orbit had been changed as the nucleus emitted rocket like bursts of gases as it was warmed by the Sun. Inert inactive asteroids orbit the Sun following the law of gravity whereas active asteroids can emit little rocket like bursts of gas which can change their path about the Sun in interesting ways. It is important to study objects like 467P (LINEAR-Grauer) to make sure their path about the Sun doesn't change to make them a threat to our home planet.   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! In the spring of 1972, North Vietnam launched the massive Easter Offensive, a conventional invasion that nearly broke South Vietnam. The response: Operation Linebacker I—a sustained U.S. air campaign that reshaped the battlefield and helped halt the advance. Join the Veterans Breakfast Club (VBC) for a powerful live conversation on this pivotal moment in the Vietnam War. Our guest, Brian Harrison, served in Vietnam in 1972–1973 with the legendary 1st Cavalry Division's “Centaurs” (air cavalry)—flying in the thick of the fighting as U.S. airpower supported South Vietnamese forces on the ground. His firsthand perspective brings us closer to the reality of the Easter Offensive and the air war that followed. We'll explore what triggered the 1972 Easter Offensive and how Operation Linebacker I differed from earlier bombing campaigns like Rolling Thunder. We'll look at the role of air cavalry and helicopter operations in the fight, and what it felt like on the ground and in the air during one of the war's most intense phases. Finally, we'll consider why 1972 marked a turning point in U.S. strategy in Vietnam. #VietnamWar #LinebackerI #EasterOffensive #MilitaryHistory #AirWar #USAirForce #ArmyAviation #VietnamVeterans #VeteransStories #ColdWarHistory

Don has been a Bigfoot tracker for the past eight years and has worked with Jevning Research for three years alongside William Jevning. He has also witnessed a UFO and an extraterrestrial abduction. As a reservation investigator, his reports of a Lizard Man, Little People, and a Centaur would be deemed outrageous to most. He has also researched UFO bases, portals, the Rake, and underground tunnel systems believed to lead into Hollow Earth. Don feels that there is much more on the horizon waiting to be discovered. The Space Show Presents Jim Muncy, Sunday, 3-10-26Quick Summary:Our discussion focused on NASA's Artemis program changes and lunar development strategy, with Jim Muncy discussing NASA Administrator Jared's recent modifications to Artemis missions, including standardizing on the Centaur 5 upper stage and adding an Earth orbit rendezvous mission before lunar landing attempts. The discussion explored how these changes improve odds for a 2028 moon landing, with both HLS providers (SpaceX and Blue Origin) being encouraged to demonstrate their lander systems in Earth orbit by mid-2027. The conversation concluded with a debate about commercial lunar development, where Jim advocated for establishing a commercial lunar base from day one rather than creating a government-built facility, arguing that commercial solutions would drive more economic activity and scientific research on the moon than a government-only approach.Detailed Summary:Jim Muncy discussed NASA Administrator Jared's recent changes to the Artemis program, including the insertion of a lower orbit rendezvous mission, cancellation of the expiration upper stage and second mobile launch platform, and standardization on a commercial Centaur 5 upper stage. The changes aim to accelerate flight rates and challenge Boeing to demonstrate realistic production capabilities to support lunar base development. Jim noted that while SLS may not be the most affordable solution, the modifications have been generally well-received by the space community, with Gateway likely to be repurposed or replaced. Our guest discussed NASA's changes to the Artemis program, highlighting Jared's decision-making process and implementation of new strategies. The discussion covered the cancellation of SLS1D configuration in favor of SLS1A with a new upper stage, as well as plans to accelerate HLS contractors' development without government micromanagement. Jim noted that while SLS manufacturing could potentially be shut down after Artemis 3, the focus remains on achieving sustainable lunar missions rather than specific hardware elements. The group discussed the odds and timeline for a human moon landing in 2028 following recent changes to the Artemis program. Jim expressed optimism about achieving a lunar landing in 2028, citing the potential for one landing attempt with a human landing system (HLS) prototype in early 2028 and another in late 2028, contingent on accelerating the SLS core production rate to one per year. Our discussion highlighted that while SLS hardware is on track, the main bottleneck remains the development of HLS systems and spacesuits, with some participants noting that inserting an additional Artemis mission could both de-risk the process and help accelerate HLS development by setting shorter-term deadlines for the companies involved. Our discussed the importance of making the lunar base commercial from day one, emphasizing the need to avoid the mistakes made with the Space Shuttle and ISS programs. He proposed creating a “Port Authority for the Moon” that would oversee economic development and maximize user participation, rather than having a government-designed lunar base. James argued that infrastructure and services should be commercially provided, with NASA focusing on defining the actual value proposition for human presence on the moon rather than designing and managing infrastructure. The discussion also touched on the potential reuse of Gateway hardware for lunar surface operations and the need to demonstrate mission capabilities beyond just landing on the moon.Jim discussed the challenges of lunar habitation, arguing that commercial systems should be embraced for moon bases similar to those in low Earth orbit. Dallas mentioned reaching out to a former Boeing manager about providing a habitat for commercial use, though Boeing hasn't responded yet. James proposed having an authority act as a market maker to assess demand for lunar habitation capabilities based on input from all potential users. David raised concerns about different interests in lunar development, particularly the gap between academic/scientific and commercial interests, to which Jim responded that a commercial approach would likely lead to more human presence and capabilities on the moon than a government-only approach, citing the potential $50 billion in SpaceX investment capital becoming available later this year.Jim discussed the potential for scientists and entrepreneurs to coexist on the moon, arguing that there is no inherent conflict between science and commerce. He emphasized that growing the total resource base through private investment could benefit science budgets and suggested that scientists should be in charge of their own budgets rather than serving as a “fig leaf” for NASA's engineering programs. Joseph noted that infrastructure could facilitate science funding through grants, similar to other scientific enterprises. David reminded the audience that time was limited for additional questions or comments. We talked about the design of lunar modules, suggesting a collaborative process involving multiple companies and NASA to establish standardized features and potentially granting antitrust exemptions to facilitate industry cooperation. He mentioned that Blue Origin might develop a simplified version of their Blue Moon lander for earlier missions, with iterative improvements leading to more capable versions for lunar landings. James expressed that both SpaceX and Blue Origin have promising paths forward, with mid-2027 as a key milestone for low Earth orbit demonstrations, though he personally believed SpaceX might succeed first due to their earlier start. The discussion also touched on potential military involvement in lunar development and the possibility of commercial activities evolving into orbital data center manufacturing.Muncy discussed his vision for establishing a commercial lunar base where entrepreneurs could test and compete with Earth-launched technologies, particularly orbital data centers. He emphasized the importance of using lunar materials for manufacturing and expressed interest in partnerships between NASA and the nuclear power industry to develop lunar power capabilities. The group also discussed power generation options on the moon, including solar power and nuclear reactors using thorium, with Dallas noting that current power solutions would likely cost around triple digits per kilowatt hour.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223 (Not in service at this time)For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access. The Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. Astronomers using the 8.1 m Gemini South Telescope in Chile were excited by the fact that 467P (LINEAR-Grauer)'s Centaur like orbit had been changed as the nucleus emitted rocket like bursts of gases as it was warmed by the Sun.

For our first episode of the Three Ravens Bestiary for 2026, we're talking all about Centaurs and Pegasus! We begin in Dark Age Greece, way back before Homer, when horse-riding cavalry suddenly became a factor in human life. Representations in art leave us in no doubt - the combination of a horse with a man makes for a terrifying foe, though that's only the start of the story.Starting with Homer, developed by Hesiod, expanded upon by Pindar, then reinterpreted by Ovid, Centaurs graduate from fearful, lusty, xenophobic savages to become something else - a version of human beings, though unable to restrain their animalistic urges. From Cheiron, the wise and noble mentor to many an Ancient Greek hero, on through to C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling, we are left in a place where now we have to wonder what ought a Centaur be a symbol for, if anything at all? Then we switch our focus to the primal flying wonder-horse and father of horsekind, Pegasus, who is born out of his mother's neck, has a non-identical twin brother we don't talk about, and who perhaps got a bit carried away himself during escapades with Bellerophon, Prince of Corinth. As always, expect lots of nerdy references to dead people and things, a few digressions to talk about, for example, whether horses are innately shifty, and plenty more besides - so bring your Golden Bridle and let's giddyup!Speak to you again on Saturday for Eleanor's Local Legends interview about Glamorganshire with author, folklorist and storyteller Cath Little!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcastREGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURVisit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. For today's episode, we're venturing to the south of Wales to historic Glamorganshire. We talk about the county's very ancient life, including the discovery of the oldest bones in Western Europe, and its development into industrial glory, and later, industrial depression.Glamorganshire is a real treasure trove of folklore, from extremely stabby fairies to helpful ghosts and suspiciously nice snakes. We dabble in a bit of local love magic, and go hunting with Mallt y Nos and her pack of hellhounds.Trundling in our rickety mine cart down into the copper works of the past, we stop off for Eleanor's story, "A Peculiar Thirst," a tale of a trip which takes an unexpected turn.We hope that you enjoy the episode, and will speak to you again on Thursday with a brand new episode of the Three Ravens Bestiary all about Centaurs!Three Ravens is a Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on a historic county, exploring the heritage, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. The realm of the giant outer planets is like a transit station for some smaller bodies. They come from beyond the orbit of Neptune, the solar system’s most remote major planet. And like passengers at a hub airport, their destinations are all over the map. These objects are called centaurs. Like the half-human, half-horses of myth, they’re hybrids – they look like both asteroids and comets. Most of them are quiet chunks of rock and ice, like asteroids. But some have haloes or tails of gas, like comets. Centaurs orbit the Sun between Jupiter and Neptune. And their orbits cross those of at least one of the giant planets. They’re small and far away, so they’re hard to find. Even so, astronomers have discovered about a thousand of them. And there could be as many as a hundred thousand that are at least a kilometer across. Centaurs come from a belt of debris beyond Neptune. They’re nudged inward by Neptune’s gravity. None of them will spend more than a few million years in the realm of the giants, though. Instead, the gravity of the planets will give them a kick. Some will be booted out of the solar system. Others will be pushed into the inner solar system. And others will slam into a planet. The biggest centaur is Chariklo. It’s about 160 miles in diameter, and it has a couple of rings. The first centaur ever seen, Chiron, also has rings. And it’s growing new rings even now. More about that tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

The Dwarf Planets orbit beyond Neptune and Pluto in the Kuiper Belt. Like Pluto, Ixion orbits in a 2-3 resonance with the orbit of Neptune. However, Ixion's elliptical orbit cuts through the ecliptic path of the Sun, spending time mostly above in the ‘upperworld' of our consciousness. The Greek myth gets pretty heavy, but essentially it suggests that broken promises lead to retribution of being outcasted. Ixion squandered a 2nd chance and was then expelled. As the mythological father of the Centaurs, Ixion represents our raw nature. Chapter-by-Chapter continues with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 33: Fight and Flight. Our Time Turner segment takes us back to Episode 471 of MuggleCast, titled “Punk'd.” Does the Ministry really value Umbridge's life over Harry's, as she claims? Could Hermione have reasonably predicted to run into the Centaurs, and what was her plan exactly? Overall how brilliant is Hermione's attempt to be free of Umbridge? It works, doesn't it? Does Hermione's talk with Bane show us that she's prejudiced, when compared to her earlier comment on Firenze to Lavender and Parvati? Do we feel bad for Grawp? A number of threads can be connected between this moment in Book 5 and the end of Book 3. Micah and Laura find a few. Is it right for Harry to allow Ginny, Neville and Luna to tag along to London? Could he have stopped them? Who SHOULD Harry have taken with him to London instead? The hosts discuss. Our Lynx Line patrons answer the question, “Hermione obviously chose the wrong thing to say to the Centaurs explaining why they led Umbridge into the Forest. What should she have said instead? [Wrong answers only]” Quizzitch: Psychologically, human beings respond to threats in one of four ways, all starting with the letter F. TWO of them are “fight” and “flight,” what are the other two?
