Three Ravens Bestiary #21: Centaurs and Pegasus

The Three Ravens Podcast

For our first episode of the Three Ravens Bestiary for 2026, we're talking all about Centaurs and Pegasus! We begin in Dark Age Greece, way back before Homer, when horse-riding cavalry suddenly became a factor in human life. Representations in art leave us in no doubt - the combination of a horse with a man makes for a terrifying foe, though that's only the start of the story.Starting with Homer, developed by Hesiod, expanded upon by Pindar, then reinterpreted by Ovid, Centaurs graduate from fearful, lusty, xenophobic savages to become something else - a version of human beings, though unable to restrain their animalistic urges. From Cheiron, the wise and noble mentor to many an Ancient Greek hero, on through to C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling, we are left in a place where now we have to wonder what ought a Centaur be a symbol for, if anything at all? Then we switch our focus to the primal flying wonder-horse and father of horsekind, Pegasus, who is born out of his mother's neck, has a non-identical twin brother we don't talk about, and who perhaps got a bit carried away himself during escapades with Bellerophon, Prince of Corinth. As always, expect lots of nerdy references to dead people and things, a few digressions to talk about, for example, whether horses are innately shifty, and plenty more besides - so bring your Golden Bridle and let's giddyup!Speak to you again on Saturday for Eleanor's Local Legends interview about Glamorganshire with author, folklorist and storyteller Cath Little!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcastREGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURVisit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. For today's episode, we're venturing to the south of Wales to historic Glamorganshire. We talk about the county's very ancient life, including the discovery of the oldest bones in Western Europe, and its development into industrial glory, and later, industrial depression.Glamorganshire is a real treasure trove of folklore, from extremely stabby fairies to helpful ghosts and suspiciously nice snakes. We dabble in a bit of local love magic, and go hunting with Mallt y Nos and her pack of hellhounds.Trundling in our rickety mine cart down into the copper works of the past, we stop off for Eleanor's story, "A Peculiar Thirst," a tale of a trip which takes an unexpected turn.We hope that you enjoy the episode, and will speak to you again on Thursday with a brand new episode of the Three Ravens Bestiary all about Centaurs!Three Ravens is a Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on a historic county, exploring the heritage, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. The realm of the giant outer planets is like a transit station for some smaller bodies. They come from beyond the orbit of Neptune, the solar system’s most remote major planet. And like passengers at a hub airport, their destinations are all over the map. These objects are called centaurs. Like the half-human, half-horses of myth, they’re hybrids – they look like both asteroids and comets. Most of them are quiet chunks of rock and ice, like asteroids. But some have haloes or tails of gas, like comets. Centaurs orbit the Sun between Jupiter and Neptune. And their orbits cross those of at least one of the giant planets. They’re small and far away, so they’re hard to find. Even so, astronomers have discovered about a thousand of them. And there could be as many as a hundred thousand that are at least a kilometer across. Centaurs come from a belt of debris beyond Neptune. They’re nudged inward by Neptune’s gravity. None of them will spend more than a few million years in the realm of the giants, though. Instead, the gravity of the planets will give them a kick. Some will be booted out of the solar system. Others will be pushed into the inner solar system. And others will slam into a planet. The biggest centaur is Chariklo. It’s about 160 miles in diameter, and it has a couple of rings. The first centaur ever seen, Chiron, also has rings. And it’s growing new rings even now. More about that tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

Send us a text to let us know what you think of the show! In this free-form episode of We're Probably Not OK!, the conversation goes exactly where it wants to go—and nowhere it's supposed to. With no set topic and plenty of verbal jazz, we bounce between heavy thoughts, pop culture, and real-life crossroads, all under the watchful eyes of the ever-looming Big Brother AI Centaur Censors. We touch on the bleak state of America and what it feels like trying to stay mentally upright in uncertain times. From there, we shift gears into pop culture, sharing our thoughts on the Stranger Things series finale, the future of Marvel movies, and our reactions to Fantastic Four. The episode also gets personal. David talks about his family's experience visiting Buddhist monks during the Walk for Peace, Brandon opens up about some serious decisions he has looming ahead, and Ryan prepares himself to teach an online course to a group of learners who may not be the most tech-savvy—what could possibly go wrong? It's thoughtful, meandering, occasionally absurd, and very We're Probably Not OK!—so settle in, let the conversation wash over you, and remember: say the wrong thing, and the AI Centaur Censors might be listening. Watch the video version of this podcast and our video game goofs on YouTube @ We're Probably Not Okay!Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

The museum contains Michelangelo's two earliest known sculptures - “The Madonna of the Stairs” and “The Battle of the Centaurs,” his spectacular wooden model for the facade of San Lorenzo and the world's largest collection of Michelangelo drawings. There is also a group of paintings celebrating Michelangelo by important 17th-century artists including Artemisia Gentileschi.

Today's guest is Jim Neaves — a master bowyer with more than three decades of experience under his belt, despite being just shy of 50. Jim began his journey crafting selfbows, but eventually found his true calling in building beautifully designed, lightning-fast laminated recurves and longbows. From his shop in Montana, he runs Centaur Archery — a small, self-owned company built on his lifelong passion for archery and a commitment to one-on-one consultation with every customer. Chapter-by-Chapter continues with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 33: Fight and Flight. Our Time Turner segment takes us back to Episode 471 of MuggleCast, titled “Punk'd.” Does the Ministry really value Umbridge's life over Harry's, as she claims? Could Hermione have reasonably predicted to run into the Centaurs, and what was her plan exactly? Overall how brilliant is Hermione's attempt to be free of Umbridge? It works, doesn't it? Does Hermione's talk with Bane show us that she's prejudiced, when compared to her earlier comment on Firenze to Lavender and Parvati? Do we feel bad for Grawp? A number of threads can be connected between this moment in Book 5 and the end of Book 3. Micah and Laura find a few. Is it right for Harry to allow Ginny, Neville and Luna to tag along to London? Could he have stopped them? Who SHOULD Harry have taken with him to London instead? The hosts discuss. Our Lynx Line patrons answer the question, “Hermione obviously chose the wrong thing to say to the Centaurs explaining why they led Umbridge into the Forest. What should she have said instead? [Wrong answers only]” Quizzitch: Psychologically, human beings respond to threats in one of four ways, all starting with the letter F. TWO of them are “fight” and “flight,” what are the other two? Join Andrew, Eric, Laura and Micah for the next Book 5 chapter discussion. Chapter-by-Chapter continues with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 27: The Centaur and the Sneak. MuggleCast last discussed this chapter on Episode 464! What is the main force behind Hermione's comments to Lavender and Parvati? Is Firenze gearing the children up to prepare for war? What are the benefits of a non-human-centric approach to Divination? Firenze also ups Harry's cool factor considerably. Two members of the DA can now produce full Patronuses! We examine their meaning, including bringing back a revelation from Micah that's nearly 20 years old (our minds are still blown.) What's the deal with Dobby's loyalties? Why can Umbridge command him not to speak? We examine Draco's choice to apprehend Harry versus later choices he makes in the books. What is the timeline of events surrounding Umbrage, and “the sneak”'s confession? How does Fudge get to Hogwarts so quickly?! What makes Marietta cave? And why is it a million times better than in the movie? The Dumbledore Lie Count (tm) returns!!! Odds & Ends cover one of Harry's forgotten schoolbooks.
